Editorial

Grace Message Issue 36 will briefly wrap up what’s going on at Port

Moody Pacific Grace Church in 2011. Theme of this issue will be ‘Mandarin Ministry’ in Home Grace Home section.

By the time when Grace Message issue 36 is published, 2 members from the Mandarin Task Force – Rev. Owen Leung and brother Michael Chung have already left the church. I have the honour to serve God with them, it is sad to see their departure. They will be missed. Pray that God will continue to lead and hold the future of Rev. Leung and Carmen, as well as Mr. & Mrs Michael Chung.

Look back at what we the Literature Department did in 2011, we still cannot achieve our goal – provide updated news about the church to brothers and sisters. I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to everyone.

Brucko is an inspiring tale of a guy with a God-kindled passion. This passion started as a tiny flame when he was 16 years old, and grew into a blazing inferno that never burned out.

When Bruce Olson was fourteen years old, he came to Christ. Sure, he had heard all about Jesus at church and school, but those stories had always seemed distant. He never f o u n d a n y re l a t i o n s h i p o r closeness to Jesus, until that day when he suddenly understood. He spoke with Jesus, and became God’s child.

The years that followed were not easy. Bruce felt God pushing him towards a life as a missionary. One particular tribe interested him: the Motilone Tribe. This tribe in South America had a reputation for killing oil company workers who were interested in taking their land. There was only one problem. Ok, make that a lot of problems. First of all, his parents didn’t agree on his choice of career. They wanted him to become successful. But their definition of

success was through the eyes of the world. The path the Bruce chose for himself made him successful in the eyes of the Lord.

Second of all, he had no money, no knowledge of Spanish, and no contac ts i n South America. But he put all these troubles aside and left them for God to handle. And handle them He did. God sent Bruce some money in the form of a donation from Bruce’s best friend, Kent Langes. Kent was a leader of a church who had pledged to support him. When he got to South America, he picked up Spanish quite quickly, because he had a thing for languages. On the road from civilization to the Motilone Tribe, Bruce was met by many friends who helped him along.

When he finally established a peaceful relationship with the Mot i lones, who ca l led h im Brucko, he struggled to learn their language, culture and beliefs. He had seen other missionaries’ strategies in Venezuela, which was to ‘westernize’ the Indians. Bruce recognized the flaws in this

p l a n , a n d d e c i d e d t o t r y something new. He introduced everything new to the Motilones through people they trusted, like the witch doctor or the tribe leader. This would lead them to accept the new ways without question, instead of writing them off as ‘the white man’s way.’ This strategy led to the fastest example of development from a primitive tribe.

Bruce’s introduction of Jesus to the Motilones was very similar to the introduction of medicine and farms. He did not push western styles upon the Indians, but rather, used their own beliefs as a stepping stone. One of their myths told that one day God will come to them in the form of a banana stalk. On one occasion, Bruce saw that the kind of banana stalk the Motilones thought God would come in looked like a book. So he told the Motilones that the Bible was God’s banana stalk. Also, he knew that news wasn’t important in Motilone culture unless it was put through a formal ceremony. So he converted his pact brother, Bobarishora, into a

Christian, and let him use the traditions to bring the rest of the Motilones to Christ. At The Festival of Arrows, Bobarishora was challenged to a singing contest. He sang about Jesus, and soon almost every member of the Mot i lone t r ibe became followers of Christ. When Bruce had doubts about whether the Motilones had really accepted Jesus as their saviour, miracle after miracle told him that the Motilone’s newfound faith was genu ine . Bruce had fina l l y succeeded in his mission for God.

What struck me the most about Bruce’s life was his raw faith in the Lord. When he faced starvation, persecution, and even death, he put his trust completely and utterly upon God. This extreme faith and trust inspired me to become more like him. I know I will not have as strong faith in God as Bruce did, but his experience has compelled me to give my life to God and to live for him, no matter where He sends me.

Missionaries are not defined as those who follow God overseas. A missionary is merely someone who does God’s mission on earth. I have been told many inspiring stories of what missionaries have done in various countries. Indeed, the struggles that the people in developing countries go through put my petty problems into perspective. Yet, I have never felt God calling me to go to another country and be a missionary. Instead, I have always felt a calling to continue my education and become an actuary. I was conflicted as to how I can help with the seemingly overwhelming need overseas, yet still use the talents God has given me. I never understood how working 9 to 5 corresponded to God’s work in foreign countries, until I attended Urbana 2009 in St. Louis, a t r i enn i a l s t uden t m i ss ions conference held by InterVarsity Christian Fellowship.

A t U rbana , a f t e r be ing exposed to the horrible injustice of human trafficking, I felt a calling

to, not go, but give. I did not feel a call to get on the next flight to Cambodia, but a call to use the talents God has blessed me with t o h e l p t h e m i s s i o n fi e l d financially. Though I was unsure as to whether it really was God’s calling or did I just want to sit in my comfortable church pew once a week and give my required 10%. So I turned to God in prayer. Previously, I had been attending evangelism seminars because I wanted to become a more contagious Christ ian in my network of fr iends. Though informative, those seminars were not as interesting as I originally thought they would be. The next day, I decided to try something new, a seminar called “Radical Giving” by Tom Hsieh.

Tom Hsieh, a CEO of a telecommunications company who makes over $200,000 annually as of 2009, lives with his f a m i l y i n a c r i m e - fi l l e d neighborhood. They do not own their own house or their own car. Why? Tom Hsieh and his family live on less than $40,000 a year. If

13

my math is correct, this is definitely more than 10%. His family has committed to living on an income that is less than the average annual income level in the US. He shared his journey, his joys, his struggles, and his story. He did not teach us how to give or tell us that we have to give. He did not give us a list of steps to follow in order to become a “radical giver”. Yet, through his sharing, I experienced a peace and a joy in knowing that this is what God is calling me to do.

Afterwards, there were other people and experiences that helped me confirm God’s calling, but Tom Hsieh was the person God used to, symbolically, push

me in the water. Currently, I am supporting a few children through organizations like World Vision. Though my current commitment is n o t s i g n i fi c a n t , i t i s m y commitment until I enter the business world. I know Tom Hsieh is not a missionary in the most natural sense. He does not physically go overseas. He does not voluntarily live among the poorest of the world. However, he uses the talents God has blessed him with and supports the mission field financially. We cannot all be missionaries that step on a plane. Tom is a missionary that works behind the scenes, a missionary whose efforts lie under the tip of the iceberg.

After he came to know Jesus Christ as his Saviour, Hudson promised God that he would go anywhere for Him. Could it be that God would want him to go to China?

Yes, it was true. God wanted Hudson to go to China and preach about the Lord. So Hudson decided he would listen and started to prepare himself for his great adventure with God.

H u d s o n Ta y l o r w a s a missionary of China and he lived from May 21, 1832 to June 3, 1905. He was the founder of the China Inland Mission (now called t h e O v e r s e a s M i s s i o n a r y Fellowship).

Hudson’s motto was "MOVE MEN, THROUGH GOD, BY PRAYER ALONE." It meant that if Hudson needed help, he was going to pray and ask God to tell people to give him all he needed. Hudson worked hard to keep this motto all throughout his life.

One time, Hudson got so ill, from a deadly germ, that his doctor said, "You are going to die."

T h a t s h o c k e d H u d s o n . Instantly, he wondered to himself, "How can I go to China then?"

Hudson was dangerously ill for two long weeks. But God n e e d e d h i m , s o H u d s o n surprisingly got better. God even sent him enough money to go back home.

However, they were taken to the chief, a kind man. He let the missionaries go and gave them permission to give out their booklets.

That day made Hudson think of Paul way back in the bible times. He was threatened too, and put in prison because he talked about Jesus. Hudson felt like Paul that night and was even glad to be treated badly for Jesus.

It was hard work being a missionary. Soon, Hudson got so tired and sick that he went back to England.

Hudson knew that there ought to be many more missionaries. But how could he send them? What about the money? Who would look after them?

He prayed and asked God for 24 more people to help him. God answered Hudson and the China Inland Mission was created.

Near China were other places to go to and the missionaries

spread around the places. Now the name of the mission had to be changed for they were not only in China. The name is now Overseas Missionary Fellowship.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and lean not on your own

understanding. Proverbs 3:5

Amy Carmichael was born in Ireland. When she was a little girl, she saw a girl staring at the window where she was sitting. The girl was hungry and wanted to eat Amy Carmichael’s Cakes.

Amy had a deep concerns towards the little girl. She decided that she would build a safe and loving place for little girls who are poor when she grew up.

Many years later when Amy’s family moved to India, she continued to help the people there. Save saved a lot of Hindu girls from captivity. She also built a hospital so that she could care for all the orphans who came from the world.

I really like Any Carmichael, I want to be like her. Amy truly is a Christian ! I want to be kind. I want to tell children about Jesus and how they can be saved.

Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven,

for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you."

Matthew 5: 12

Today, a large percent of the world has access in reading God's Word, the Bible. Centuries ago, it was very difficult to read the Bible. In 1522, England's Bibles were only available in Hebrew and Greek. These were the first languages in which God's Word was written. Since most English citizens couldn't speak in Hebrews or Greek, they couldn't read the Bible.

A scholar, William Tyndale, was one of the people who could understand the Bible in both Hebrews and Greek. He grew happy as he learned God's Word. Other people spoke only English and no Bible has ever been translated into English. Tyndale thought that everyone should have a right to read the Bible, even kids. William began reading the Greek New Testament ,

translating each verse into English on a p i ece o f pape r. The translation of the first English Bible had started.

Tyndale decided to travel elsewhere to do his work. William and Will Roy, a friend, set off for Germany. He did his work, in a small room, translating the Bible every day. A printer willingly helped Tyndale print copies of the New Testament. Secretly, William sent them across the sea to England. Many villagers had Bibles brought into their house unknowingly, and were excited at the sight. Most people enjoyed having an English Bible. They read it to their children who shared it with all the people they knew. Soon enough, many people had been reading the Bible and, rea l i z ing that God is t ru ly wonderful and amazing.

King Henry VIII didn't want to see anyone with the books. Still, the people decide that it was important to share God's Word. So they read the Bible to their children. All these brave men and

women were soon caught and put into prison. Many suffered great deaths for reading and sharing the Bible.

Soon, soldiers went looking f o r t h e p e r s o n w h o w a s translating God's Word. Nobody knew who the translator was. William stayed hidden in Europe, continuing his translations. After a few days, he had finished most of the Old Testament.

Soldiers raided the print shop where the translations were printed out. Tyndale heard the news and quickly ran to a ship. William knew in his heart that the people needed to read God's Word. He believed that the words o f t he Lo rd we re easy to understand when one reads with an open heart.

On the ship, Tyndale had p l e n t y o f t i m e t o w o r k . Unfortunately, a storm came through and slashed at the ship

until it sank. God let William live and William soon started working again.

Soon, Tyndale was tricked and brought back to England. Soldiers put him in a dungeon for 16 months. Afterwards, they burned him at a stake. Before dying, William cried, "Lord, open the king of England's eyes!"

God soon answered William's prayer. 2 years later, King Henry VIII made a law that all Bibles should be available to all the people in England. I pray that our brothers and sisters will remain faithful as well as strong in God.

"Blessed are you when men hate you, and when they exclude you, and revile you, and cast out your

name as evil, for the Son of Man's sake. Rejoice in that day and leap

for joy! For indeed your reward is great in heaven, for in like manner their fathers did to the prophets."

A lot of us have dreamed about being a missionary overseas work ing amongst the poor indigenous population, teaching Sunday schools and converting people to Christ. The stories of Hudson Taylor, the Cambridge Seven, Amy Carmichael, John Elliot, on and on, may have fueled our “heavenly” imaginations of our youth. However, God has different plans in one’s lives, and soon enough, our “ideals” are diluted and mingled with the drudgeries of daily life. In this day of great efficiencies using mass media, we see mass conversions in televised evangelistic meetings. Biblical scholars and evangelists atta in ing celebr i ty status - achieving results and reaching out to people that few can dream of a century ago.

However, my thoughts have drifted back to a missionary over a century ago – or was this person really qualified to be called a missionary?

William (Bill) Whiting Borden was the heir to the enormous

Borden family dairy fortune in Chicago at the turn of the 20th century. He was converted to Christianity under the ministry of Dwight L. Moody. He was already a millionaire at the age of 16 when he graduated from high school in 1904. His graduation present from his parents was a trip around the world. However, his burden towards God’s unreached people grew stronger as he travelled through Asia, Middle East and Europe. His friends commented that he was “throwing himself away as a missionary” when his l e t t e r s a r r i ved home f rom overseas. In response, Borden wrote two words in the back of his Bible after he renounced his fortune in favor of missions: "no reserves".

Arriving at Yale as a freshman, his friends there noticed the difference in this new individual. One of them wrote, "He came to college far ahead spiritually, of any of us. He had already given his heart in full surrender to Christ and had really done it. We who were his classmates learned to

lean on him and find in him a strength that was solid as a rock, just because of this settled purpose and consecration." While immersed in the halls of the pinnacle of knowledge at Yale, Bill lamented that though people there may have high academic ideals, they have an empty humanistic philosophy, which led to moral weakness and sin-ruined lives.

Bil l wasted no time but started his morning prayer group with 3 other students. This soon became a movement and spread across the Ivy League campus. By the end of his first year, 150 freshmen were meeting weekly for Bible study and prayer. By the time Bill was a senior; one thousand of Yale’s 1300 students were meeting in such groups bringing many students to Christ, and many more to live a holy life. During his college years, Bill made one entry in his personal journal that defined what his classmates were seeing in him. That entry said simply: "Say 'no' to self and 'yes' to Jesus every time."

His outreach ministry went beyond the campus; he cared about the underprivileged people in the port of New Haven. He helped to start the Yale Hope Mission for their rehabilitation. One of his friends wrote that he "might often be found in the lower parts of the city at night, on the street, in a cheap lodging house or some restaurant to which he had taken a poor hungry fellow to feed him, seeking to lead men to Christ."

Bill’s missionary call narrowed to the Muslim population in Kansu, China. At a time when the whole world was open before him as he graduated from a renowned university, his missionary zeal never wavered. He turned down some high paying job offers because of his unique calling. After his father told him that he would never let him work in the company ever again, he wrote in his Bible two more words: "no retreats."

In order to fully prepare himself for his future role, Bill

decided to do graduate work at Princeton Seminary in New Jersey. When he is finished, he set sail for China on December 17, 1912. As he was hoping to work with Muslims, he stopped first in Egypt to study Arabic. However, not long after arriving in Cairo, Bill contracted spinal meningitis. Within a month on April 9, 1913, 25-year-old William Borden was dead. His grave is found in an unkept missionary cemetery near downtown Cairo, about 60 yards away from the grave of Oswald Chambers. One quote on the epitaph of his gravestone says: “Apart from faith in Christ there is no explanation for such a life”.

Borden bequeathed $1 million to the China Inland Mission and other Christian agencies. The Borden Memorial Hospital in Lanzhou China was named after him.

Perhaps you may not have heard about Bill Borden, or perhaps you are already very familiar with his story, it is hard to judge his success as a missionary.

Some may even question whether he would qualify to stand in the halls l ined with people l ike H u d s o n Ta y l o r o r D a v i d Livingstone.

There is no doubt in my mind that he represents one of my most impressive and admired persons in the history of the missions field even when he does not have a single convert from the Muslim people in Kangsu. He obeyed our Lord’s command in John 20:21. But our Lord has a much bigger plan for him, though it may not be as readily apparent to even us, Christians. Through the years, the story of Bill Borden have been told in churches and Sunday schools touching many lives, motivated many believers to renew their commitment to Christ, and many to rededicate their lives to one living solely for Christ.

Bill Borden had demonstrated the simplicity of faith, single mindedness of purpose and the willingness to give up a life of comfort and security to embark on the adventure that the Lord

has set before him. He was unwavered in his resolve to obey the Lord’s calling. He understood that our Lord calls us on His own terms, as He has said to the young ruler in Luke 18:18-23. In our daily walk of faith, there must not be even a smidge of disbelief, lack of trust or disobedience. God wants and demands our very all, and Bill Borden realize that f r o m a t e n d e r a g e – N O RESERVE!

He is also one that realizes what our Lord said in Luke 9:62 - “Jesus replied, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God." When his faith was put to the test when he graduated from an elite school with the prospect of the whole world dazzling in front of him, he unwaveringly wrote in his Bible, NO RETREAT!

After setting sail for his final destination, China, he realized that in order to learn more about the Muslim traditions, the Arabic language, he would have to stay

in Cairo while enduring the tropical climate, poor living and sanitary conditions. He promptly became sick soon after his arrival, and must have endured the delirious fevers, drenching sweats when he wrote in his Bible, for the last time, NO REGRETS!

He knows that whatever happens, the Lord that he trusts and loves so much will surely take good care of him.

…the world was not worthy of them…These were all commended

for their faith, yet none of them

received what had been promised, since God had planned something

better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect. Hebrews 11: 38-40

Daniel Leung (Titus)

Grace Diary

It is great joy to serve at the mission, no one has anything

to boast, everybody just try to do their part to participate. Everybody are always eager to help out, everybody reverence the pastors, and all the pastors are so humble. Everybody talk about the things of God, look for the divine rather than in carnal ways. Nobody would look at you oddly if you suddenly dance in the Spirit, nobody gonna mind you if you just sit and pray either. Nobody would judge you by anything because everyone knows everybody are just as bad, but yet would speak boldly in love by the Holy Spirit against wrong doings. How good can it get? The irony is that, among the filthiest place in town, among the most unlikely saints, I have found the most beautiful place, in this mission!

People there are living much tougher lives than me, I do not share their pain, though I understand. In human terms I am much blessed than they are, and sometimes I am ashamed to reveal how easy my life is compared to theirs. But it is when a man is crushed to the core, when all prides and egos are washed away, that its most beautiful essence is revealed, the image of God!

There are always a group of foreign students to hold mission trip there, usually for a one year term. They are always friendly, and respectful. Even though I am the big

brother there, I am always learning from them. It is always fun to hang around with them, though I don't speak their language. It is sort of like when you are traveling and meeting different new people all the time, you'd build up a very good relationship, but always part too soon.

Sometimes I do miss the old ways, and I'm sorry to say, sometimes I do feel like being mediocre, 'cause itʼs easier, it is constant, and I'm in control. But I only live once, and this is just much more exciting, why would I give this up for anything? my own laziness?

P.S. Daniel joined the Mission trip to China in 2010.

It is great joy to serve at the mission, no one have anything to boast, everybody just try to do their part to participate. The irony is that, among the filthiest place in town, among the

most unlikely saints, I've found the most beautiful place, in this mission!

People there are living much tougher lives than me, I do not share their pain, though I understand. In human terms I am much blessed than they are, and sometimes I'm ashamed to reveal how easy my life is compared to theirs. But it is when a man is crushed to the core, when all prides and egos are washed away, that its most beautiful essence is revealed, the image of God!

There are always a group of foreign students there to hold mission trip there, usually for a one year term. They are always friendly, and respectful. Even though I'm the big brother there, I'm always learning from them. Its always fun to hang around with them, though I don't speak their language. But everything seems to be fast forward when they come and go so quickly. Its sort of like when you're traveling and meeting different new people all the time, you'd build up a very good relationship, but always part too soon.

Sometimes I do miss the old ways, and I'm sorry to say, sometimes I do feel like being mediocre, 'cause its easier, it is constant, and I'm in control. But I only live once, and this is just much more exciting, why would I give this up for anything? my own laziness?

越多,世界是明顯衰敗,全球天氣改變;地震、海嘯、水淹、旱災、饑荒、細菌變異、病毒感染、水源染、糧食 染、核輻射等破壞了整個生態,天災人禍;

Through Him I saw the world in color,

Reflections of light on the retina.

His voice, resonating like no other,

Vibrations of the vocal chords.

His touch ignites a strong connection,

Detection by somatic senses.

His fragrance captures my attention,

Recognition by olfaction.

Our first kiss, a taste of sweet honey,

Perceptions of the tongue.

Love's romance with senses, entangled

As feelings grow, trapped

As feelings fade.

Love breathes,

Breaks free the burden

Of emotions, to love unreasonably, undeservedly.

Joshua Fellowship for the past couple months in 2011 are very passionate. As a chairman of Joshua, I realize that there are much healing works to be done in o u r l i f e . O u r t h e m e i s "C.L.I.M.B."(Come Lord Ignite Mighty Blaze) and we hope we can experience the adventure of climbing up to the mountain to see God's face. The destiny is God's face. Of course, the process of climbing is more significant but not easy to achieve. There are many challenges, many steps as we have never known if there is a loosen rock waiting for us. Therefore, we, the committees decide to offer everyone a Carabiner attaching with a verse in the bible. The Carabiners are

the most important connecting components in safety-critical systems such as climbing. They are main ly object in rope-intensive, which for us to climb up as like we hook up to the bible. Whenever we have recitation, we carry the Carabiners as a sign of keeping up.

Up to now, we had two meaningful programs according to our theme. The first we have watched a movie of "The Climb" which is shown the value of friendship, and the brief review of Jesus resurrection and letting go. And the second is a chance to learn different methods of tying knots in secure of climbing up to the mountain. Let’s see God’s face.

Praise to God for another great year of Awana! I would like to take this opportunity to do a quick review of what happened this year and give some information about next year.

This year we had over 40 clubbers that registered and most came consistently. While many were returning members, we had some new friends too! During our regular clubs, the kids enjoyed and learned in game t ime, handbook time, council time, and snack time. We also had some exciting special events! These included “Ice-cream Sundae Kick-off” back in September 2010 where we started off the year with some yummy treat, “Western

N i g h t A w a n a Fair” in October where we memorized a lot of Bible verses for t ickets to p lay games, “Missions Fest” field trip in January 2011 where we learned about missionary work, “Adopt-a-club” fundraising in April where our bake sale raised $690 for our sponsor Awana clubs, “Bible Mania” competition in June where we raced to memorize handbook sections, “Grand Prix” race and award ceremony to end off our year, and finally, “Narnia Party” where we invited families to watch The Voyage of the Dawn Treader movie.

Our club experienced some new changes in 2010. For

example, Awana started at 7:00 pm instead of 7:30 pm so we could finish earlier and kids could go home earlier. Many felt this was a good change! We also began a “Girls Group” for the Gr.5-6 girls. Instead of game time, the girls would do activities such as making Christmas cards for missionaries, fundraising for World Vision’s “Educate a Girl” program, watching a video and learning about body image in God’s eyes, and making posters for our bake sale. We will continue to set aside some time for “Girls

Group” next year so hopefully more girls can enjoy this time!

Last but not least, I would like to thank you for all the effort that parents put into nurturing their children , the hard work that kids put into this Awana year, and the dedication of our leaders. Let’s continue this effort in knowing, loving, and serving God for next year! Our first Awana night was on Sept 17,2011, and we had a great kick off after a wonderful summer break !

G o d ’s a l m i g h t y l o v e a n d presence was with the Eden Fellowship throughout this year. Under the leadership of Joey, our committee has been able to organize bible studies, activities and overall unite over 35 Eden members in one fellowship. The

Eden Fellowship has strengthened many members’ faith in God but has also endured perseverance and adversity following Joey’s leave from church. The following sections recap what Eden has gone through this year.

The Awakening

Passion World 2010 was truly a remarkable event that inspired us to focus on Jesus Christ in our lives. From this event, Eden Fellowship chose Passion as the theme for 2010. This was the first time many of us attended a massive Christian concert in Rogers Arena with over 10,000 participants. All of us felt the presence of God that night as we s a n g O u r G o d , C h o s e n Generation and many more with Chris Tomlin.

The 1040 enlightenment

Following Passion World Tour 2010, the Eden Fel lowship opened Jesus Christ into their lives with more interest as they watched 1040 which was a film documentation on the rise of Christianity throughout Asia.

Canada Day

Despite Joey’s unexpected departure, the Eden Fellowship

remained hopeful and united. We continued on bible study nights and organized outings such as this one (picture left) on Canada Day.

Joint Fellowship Summer Volleyball

The Eden Fellowship joined up with Joshua, Jeremiah and Mark Fellowship in one summer day to play volleyball together. This was a rare event to see many people p lay ing games and enjoying the outdoor environment altogether!

The Retreat

Towards the end of summer, the Eden Fellowship went to Camp Luther at Mission for a camp retreat. Joined by Rollie Doo and Colin Lee as our guest speaker, the fellowship learned spiritual discernment and enjoyed 3 days and two nights playing games!
