Participating students showed a deep understanding of the Tai O living environment as their innovative and ‘green’ thoughts were reflected in the entries. All winning entries will be showcased at Plaza Hollywood from today until 13 April 2011. “In order to raise public awareness of poverty housing issues in Tai O, Habitat for Humanity encourages students to step into the shoes of Tai O residents, and design simple, safe and decent homes for the Tai O community.” Mr. Kester Yim, Managing Director of Habitat for Humanity China remarked at the prize presentation ceremony. “The response to the competition has been overwhelming. We are delighted to see participating students combine their creativity with intelligent innovation, to suit the needs of elderly residents. Their efforts are really commendable.” Over 120 entries in two categories, Junior and Senior, were received, competing for six awards – QBE Best Stilt House Design Award, The Most Creative Award, The Most Feasible and Practical Award, The Most Aesthetic Award, The Highest Participation School Award and The Most “LIKE” Stilt House Design Award. After the award presentation ceremony, all guests immediately participated in Habitat for Humanity China’s ‘Homebuilding’ caring initiative by writing their blessings for low-income families around the world on wish-making cards, and hanging them in front of the New Hope House. Others can also join this initiative by visiting New Hope House and donating HK$20 to the Tai O Stilt House Restoration and Community Development Project. All money raised will be used to improve the living conditions of low-income elderly residents, and to preserve and protect the traditional cultural environment of Tai O. Habitat for Humanity has received strong support from Gold Sponsor QBE Mortgage Insurance (Asia) Limited to run the Tai O Stilt House Design Competition. QBE genuinely cares about giving back to our community and striving to become a responsible corporate member of the society.
