    DEAR FELLOW ROTARI ANS,

If you take a look at the Rotary calendar, its easy to see where our priorities as an organization lie. The Rotary year begins in July; in August we mark Membership Month, in September we celebrate New Generations, October is for vocational service, and so on, turning our attention to different topics that are important in Rotary. Its a great idea to do this, because it reminds us to talk about subjects that we might otherwise overlook during our busy Rotary year. But we all know that every topic on our calendar from fellowship to our Foundation is important. All of them are part of what makes Rotary what it is, and what makes all of us Rotarians. In Rotary, December is Family Month. Looking back on my years as a Rotarian,I have seen how important family is in Rotary and how important Rotary can beto our families. My wife, Corinna, chose to join Rotary just a few months ago, after many years as a Rotary spouse. All three of our children are also Rotarians. All of them joined theirown club, in their own time. All of them have found unique interests in Rotary. As wehave watched them fi nd their own paths, we have been struck by how wonderful it is to have so many members of our family involved in Rotary service. Rotary gives us something good that we can all do together. With Rotary, we always have interesting things to talk about at dinner. We are all involved in diff erent service, in diff erent clubs, so when we sit down together, we are talking about humanitarian needs of every kind, in every part of the world. ere is always something new to learn. Our conversations are also a wonderful way to teach our children, through our own actions, what is really important in life. ey learn about what life is like in diff erent parts of the world, and how all of us have an obligation to help others when we can. I can think of no better lessons to teach our families than the lessons of Rotary service. I hope that in this Rotary year, many of you will encourage your family membersto join Rotary, Rotaract, or Interact. Bringing your family into Rotary doesnt justLight Up Rotary it lights up your own lives as well.

My dear fellow Rotarians, Time fl ies. We are almost half way through the journey of 2014-15. I believe that every club has already accomplished most of the tasks and goals set for the first half of the year. Recently, we are going to elect the 2017-18 distr ict governor. This election might be the last one for district 3520 since our district might split into three starting from July, 2017 D3521, D3522 and D3523 accordingly. If so, the district governor elected this time would be the first governor of the district he or she belongs to. Once RI officially approves the districting proposal, there will be another election to decide the other two district governors. These two governors will be elected by their respective districts. Please do cherish every voting right of your club and do act complying with election-related regulations of RI, which suggest no election campaign and canvassing for votes. In 1996, R.C. of Taipei Fumen, Taipei Chung Chu, Taipei Nanyan and Taipei Star, which had originally belonged to the South Family, were assigned to the District 3480 during the districting process. Taking the opportunity of the redistricting, these four clubs would like to reunite to the South Family. And the district governor of 3480, DG Naomi, has revealed her affirmative sign and has called for a vote by mail to complete the legitimate procedure. And of course, we are happy to see the positive result and welcome them to be reunited with their sponsor club. So, acting in compliance with the RI bylaws 15.010.1, we called for a vote by mail asking clubs approval on this matter. Albeit Mandarin has been approved to be the officially supporting language in R.I. by the board of directors, still, we shall keep engaging in membership development. The goal of

40,000 membership is still counted on every ones involvement to achieve. So that, Mandarin in Rotary could have a solid foundation. December is what so called Rotary Family Month in R.I.. The support of the families is the foundation of the entire growing Rotary over 100 years. Presumably, abundant events acknowledging the importance of Rotary Family were hosted by clubs in our district. Those events would involve each family to support Rotary and to light up Rotary. Moreover, the spouses of each Rotarian family could engage in Rotary via joining the satellite clubs. To encourage this, for each spouse joining Rotary, the club would be awarded with 5 stars. The children of the Rotarians may proactively take part in Interact, Rotaract and the Youth Exchange Program. By doing so, we hope to involve them to together know and enjoy Rotary and furthermore to bring kindness and unselfishness to our society. This year is the 110th year since Rotary was founded. On December 31st, we will have a New Years Eve party for our district. 2,300 participants will join this party and it is the biggest event except for the district convention. It is also a loving event for all the Rotarians and their family to attend. We will all share a good time at the moment of counting down and greet each other and embrace the beginning of the new year. Please join us in celebrating our rewarding 2014, and enjoy the cheerful and pleasant party.

Lastly, I wish every one Happy New Year.

    Rotary International District 3520District Governor

The Rotary Foundation rises on expert list of top nonprofits

The Rotar y Foundation has continued its steady growth, moving up 35 spots to 85th in The Chronicle of Philanthropy's annual ranking of the top 400 nonprofit organizations in the United States. The ranking is based on monetary contributions from private sources and reflects the increasing generosity of those who support Rotary's mission.According to The Chronicle of Philanthropy, The Rotary Foundation received $239,576,000 in 2013, a 32.4 percent increase from the previous year."This c lear ly shows our member s recognize the unparalleled value of giving to their Foundation," says John Hewko, Rotary's general secretary. "They know that by giving to the Foundation their dollars have a much greater impact. And friends of Rotary respect that the Foundation puts their gift to great use."The Foundation recently earned a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, the largest and most prestigious independent evaluator of nonprofits in the United States. In the 2013-14 Rotary year, 92 percent of the Foundation's expenditures were applied to programs, with only 6 percent spent on fundraising and 2 percent on administrative expenses. The Foundation funded $23.5 million in district grants and $47.3 million in global grants. These grants support local and international humanitarian projects as well as scholarships.By Arnold R.
