At Bangor Students’ Union we believe that students should be in the driving seat of their academic experience. We’re also very proud of our Academic Representation Unit and Course Representative System. Here’s some more information on the ARU; EMAIL [email protected]

Student LifeWellbeing also includes coping with student life at Bangor (we all face difficult times when we’re away from home at university) and the way you live in the community. We work closely with Student Support Services in making sure you’re time at Bangor is as awesome as it can be. As well as our Healthy Living week that both Lydia and Nicola are keen to make bigger and better, the new Connect@Bangor volunteering project will be available to all students, in order to ensure that you have the support you need to make the most of your time at Bangor. All bases covered.

Staff in the Academic Representation Unit also run the course rep system, where all of your feedback is heard and used to continually monitor and improve your academic experience. This then helps to resolve problems with your course, providing you with opportunities to comment and reflect on your experiences and by working with you to changes issues that matter the most. Course Reps are elected in the first few weeks of semester 1, and any student can stand to be one. The system is led by your reps while working in partnership with your School, your College and everyone here at the Students’ Union to make sure that your opinions are at the centre of every decision made which affects your studies.

If you’d like to be at the forefront of decisions affecting your education, email [email protected] to find out how to stand in the first few weeks of Semester 1.

Here at the SU we are always happy to help, whether it be working with you to get involved in any of our projects, such as the course reps, or assisting you with an academic appeal or problem. Feel free to contact us via email, phone or you can pop into see us, on the top floor of the SU building!

Hello everyone! I’m Lydia and I’m the Vice President of Education & Welfare at Bangor Students’ Union. Welcome to Bangor University!

Hannah RettieCourse Rep of the Year NUS Wales

Our Academic Representation Unit focuses on students’ academic experience, and is the place you can go to if you have any academic related problems or need to make an academic appeal. The ARU is also home to the Student-Led Teaching Awards project – a project which gives you the opportunity to have a say on your teaching and learning experiences, by giving you the chance to nominate staff in your department for one of our awards. Look out for more information about this during Semester 1!

yourEDUCATION

yourWELFARE

Finally - never, ever, ever hesitate to phone, email or pop into the SU at any time for some advice, support, or just a chat – we’re a talkative bunch, we won’t mind!

Zero Tolerance PolicyWe also have a Zero Tolerance Policy at Bangor University, whereby staff are Zero Tolerance trained – meaning when you’re on a night out, or going about your own business, you can feel safe in knowing that there are people across Bangor looking out for your safety (being a relatively small city, it’s quite easy to do!). This will be rolled out across the University as time goes on.

Your welfare is just as important as everything else you do at Bangor. From Dafydd at Nightline, Coppafeel and our LGBTQ+ society, to myself as your Education and Welfare Sabb, we are all committed to ensuring that your welfare is at the top of the priority list.

To enjoy your student experience to the fullest you need to be happy and healthy and know you can turn to someone for support when you need it – which is exactly what we do all day, every day.

Housing CampaignOur housing campaign will give you information to help you decide on the best time to start looking and what to look for. We also have our Housing Hand scheme, so look out for us!

CampaignsThere are many campaigns that you can get involved with, from existing campaigns such as the mental health campaign which has a dedicated Time To Change Society, to a new campaign focusing on student safety looking at walking buses and creating an awareness of safety both at home and while out and about.

WE EVEN LOOK AT EMPLOYABILITY AND REDUCING BARRIERS TO ACCESSING EDUCATION.

1918 your

If you’ve got a great idea to improve Bangor, it’s really easy to make the change! All you need to do is head to bangorstudents.com and head to the ideas section. Anyone can submit an idea, and the Idea will be discussed at Senate and then, if passed, becomes SU policy. The SU Officers will work with you to implement your idea! That’s you influencing the experience of those around you!

HAVE YOU GOT A BRIGHT IDEA?

IDEAS

SENATESenate is a representative body of our student population. It meets regularly to make sure that the sabbatical officers are fulfilling their roles effectively, to debate ideas and issues and create new projects and areas of work. You can get involved in senate by talking to students on Senate, or by submitting an idea for Senate to discuss.

GENERAL MEETINGSWe have two General Meetings a year, one at the beginning and one at the end. The GMs exist to give all of you an opportunity to question your officers, find out what progress your union is making and set budgets for the year ahead. This is also a chance for you to suggest new projects and ideas for the SU to work on.

ELECTIONSThe SU is led by students, for students. It’s how we make sure we’re fresh, vibrant, fun, and rooted in your experience. Democracy is at the heart of everything we do, and you’ll get the chance to elect students to run your club or society, to be your course representative, to sit on Student Council to debate ideas and issues, and to work as sabbatical officers. You have the power to choose who represents you. Or, if you’ve got drive, enthusiasm and ideas you can always stand in the elections yourself!

TRUSTEE BOARDThe SU is a charity that works on your behalf. Legally we have to have a trustee board to oversee our activities, making sure that we work hard for students, whilst, of course, ensuring that it’s all above board and legal. In addition to the sabbatical officers, we have 3 elected student volunteers. You can find out more online.

yourREPRESENTATION

Bangor Students’ Union is YOUR Students’ Union. We’re here so you can shape your Union, make the change you want to see, and be the change that you want to see.

our ANNUAL STATEMENTTHE ANNUAL STUDENT STATEMENT IS ONE OF OUR PROUDEST PIECES OF WORK.You can read our statements over on our website, but put simply, it’s a report entirely based on what you tell us about your academic experience. From books on shelves, to computer labs, to feedback on your work and module choices.

• Cuts to Disabled Students’ Allowance

• Sale of the Student Loan Book

• Changes to Department of Work and Pension services in North Wales

We work with the University to implement recommendations on how you can work in partnership with the University to improve your experience by shaping how you’re taught, how you progress, to how you want your experience to look and feel.

It’s your education, and we believe that you’re the experts, so it should be us students informing decisions.

REPRESENTING youNATIONALLY AND REGIONALLYHere’s a short list of things that we’ve campaigned against regionally and nationally, ensuring that students’ voices are heard.
