KANO KANO KANO KAN 1931 17 KANO is a 2014 Taiwanese baseball film di-rected by Umin Boya and produced by WEI Te-Sheng and Jimmy Huang. It depicts how the multi-racial Kano baseball team from southern Taiwan overcame great odds to represent the island in the 1931 Japanese High School Baseball Championship at Koshien Stadium, when Taiwan was still under Japanese rule. Performing beyond all expectations, the underdog team advanced to the championship game in the tournament.

3 As of now, are there 9, 12 or 14 tribes of Taiwan Aboriginals? The answer is 16! The reason is that the Aboriginal association approved the addition of 2 other tribes as well as their tribes names and resolution. The number of Taiwanese Aboriginals is approximately 535,000, which is 2% of Taiwans population. They are located in 55 towns. Looking over Taiwans history and progress, the aboriginals may seem glorious on the outside, but actually they are under negative cycle and severe political conflicts in which they experience stigma, their voices are being silenced and they are being weakened. In addition, since the Aboriginals self-governing laws are not matured yet, this leads to one problem after another on the development of their history and progress. Not only do they lack the space to express their opinions, they are being marginalized among the mainstream ideology. Next, due to post-colonial ruling power and topics, Taiwan identity and values that are wrong, twisted and self-righteous often occurred and therefore caused irreparable harm to the aboriginals and further deepens negative stereotype impressions about the Aboriginals. The writer thinks that if we want to form aboriginals Taiwan identity, the current cultural circumstances and trend of thought need to be analyzed by the Aboriginals, then form the Aboriginals identity and discussion that are post-colonial, independent and have liberating meaning. In other word, we need to focus and understand the reason why the Aboriginals have weaker self-identity, indecisive social experience. Therefore, I want to share the obstacles and challenges we would face from Aboriginals point of view. Dilemma & Challenge 1. Anxiety over Separation Due to the circumstances, the migration of global population is mainly due to the need to work and living needs, so people keep moving from places to places. This is no exception for the Aboriginals; many people leave their hometowns to work at other places in order to have better circumstances and conditions in the future and for the next generations. However, such moving around is also the moving around of ethnic types or ethnic groups and therefore causes negative impacts to the Abo-riginals. Because they are forced to work far away and at the same time the society brings alienation and marginali-zation, this causes young Aboriginals to leave their homes when they are very young and live in the cities to study or work. From a general perspective, they seem to be happy and they are satisfied. In fact, many people wish to return to their homes but they cannot find ( P.14)

( P.11)appropriate jobs when they return, so they cannot return! So this causes young Aboriginals to have the anxiety over separation. 2. Participation in Public Issues Even though the education standard of Aboriginals popularizes gradually and many Aboriginal youth are interested gradually in understand-ing their culture and tradition, they still do not have enough knowledge about their countrys affairs. The main reason is even though they are interested in their tradition and culture, they do not really understand ethnic groups important issues in the society and politics, for example, self-governing laws, land laws, fisheries, traditional fields and etc. and all these are closely related to the Aboriginals survival. Therefore, the self-identity chal-lenge of Aboriginals new generation is to learn to participate in the public issues and affairs as well as devote diligently to the su-pervision of government ruling and operation in order to protect their ethnic rights and ob-ligation. Therefore, thank you to those who work for Taiwans democracy and the leaders of Sunflower Student Movement. Because of your bravery, many young Aboriginals are encouraged and start to really think about their future survival and rights. 3. To Inherit the Vision of Aboriginal Self-Governing Finally, young Aboriginals are starting to identify with their tradition and culture. But many are at the stage of knowing something new and with curiosity, they still need to be encouraged to discuss the motive behind their culture and tradition. However, they have to face the important task of inher-iting. The biggest challenge is the lack of organization and agreement. New generation of Aboriginals need to focus on ethnic con-sciousness to accumulate the foundation of democracy reform and self-governing. So they are the same as all Taiwanese young people; they all need to think about how to pass on Taiwanese democracys development and planning.

Greetings, members of TCCS! It has been a little over a year since I visited your spe-cial organization. After Vancouver, I vis-ited a similar organization as yours in Ta-coma, Wa. called the Asian Pacific Cul-tural Center (APCC) whose members are transplants from the Asian Pacific region. A toastmasters club has been formed there and from their Facebook it has become a dynamic magnet that energizes the com-munity. Next month, I have been invited to speak at Kwang Hua Taiwan Society in

Hong Kong. It is a privilege to connect with the Taiwanese dias-pora around the world. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
