Welcome and Opening Devotions
Pastor Beth Fellinger welcomed the delegates and guests. Destination Praise team opened with a time of praise and worship. Pastor Beth then led devotions by sharing and encouraging, that we as disciples are to make our ‘dot’ – our ‘mark’. All of us have the capability and are encouraged to make a ‘mark’ in this world for God. Ephesians 5:1 instructs us to be ‘imitators of God’ NIV -‐ ‘try to be like Him’ NCV In small groups, delegates participated in a time of prayer asking that God would use us to leave our mark for Him.
2. Constitution of Classis 2.1 Pastor Fellinger called the meeting to order. 2.2 Credentials Committee Report (Part One)
Rev. Norman Visser reported for the Credentials Committee. He reported that 26 churches were present. Regrettably Windsor-‐Ambassador sent notification this morning that they are unable to attend. 70 delegates have been registered, including 15 first-‐time delegates. All first-‐time delegates have signed the Covenant for Officebearers.
2.3 Pastor Fellinger declared Classis as constituted, introducing Rev. Tim Luimes of Blenheim and Elder George Flikweert of Chatham-‐First as Chair and Vice-‐Chair respectively. Mr. Ron Middel was seated as the Clerk.
2.4 Chair Luimes made opening remarks, drawing the delegate’s attention to the Safe Church display. He also announced that Pastor Daryl Meijer has joined the Counseling Fund Committee.
3. Classical Ministries Committee (CMC) Report 3.1 Rev. Peter Hoytema, Chair of the CMC reviewed their report. 3.2 CMC notes that following this meeting of classis the practice of having one of its meetings
held on a Saturday will be reviewed. A survey was presented to the delegates for their completion. The results and a recommendation related to this matter will be presented at the May meeting of classis.
3.3 CMC appointed the following Officers and recommended that classis confirm: • Chair: Rev. Peter Hoytema (2017-‐2)

Motion made and seconded to approve the recommendation … carried. 3.4 CMC approved the following recommendation from the Student Fund Committee and
presented to classis for approval: Student Fund Committee proposes that there be a grace period for loan repayment where no repayment would be expected for as long as the individual remains an active candidate in the denomination and that repayment would be expected upon no longer having candidate status. After that time, a repayment plan would be negotiated with the individual. Should the individual receive a call, the loan forgiveness program would be initiated upon receiving a call to ministry at the usual rate of 10% per year on ordained service. Grounds: 1. The time between graduation and receiving a call can be quite lengthy. 2. The Candidacy Committee of the denomination recognizes that the lack of a
calling church after a period of time represents a lack of confirmation of the call to ordained ministry.
Motion made and seconded to approve the recommendation … carried. 3.5 CMC recommended that classis approve the appointment of Rev. William Koopmans as
counselor to Chatham-‐First CRC. Motion made and seconded to approve … carried. 3.6 CMC recommended that Mr. Andy Bouma (Woodstock-‐Covenant) be appointed to serve on
the London Campus Ministry Committee (Western) and as the representative of the combined Western and Fanshawe Campus ministry on CMC. Motion made and seconded to approve the recommendation … carried.
3.7 CMC acknowledged the recent decision our denomination has made regarding the delegation of deacons to synod. CMC recommended that, beginning in January 2016, Classis Chatham appoint 2 pastors, 1 elder and 1 deacon as delegates to synod. Following discussion, a motion is made and seconded to approve the recommendation … carried.
3.8 Rev. Hoytema made an announcement regarding the ministry status of Rev. Richard Vander Vaart. He advised that Rev. Vander Vaart’s ministry at St. Thomas-‐Destination Church has concluded. The Classical Ministries Committee is now trying to determine how we can work through this as a classis. Church visitors and regional pastors are currently involved. A statement from Rev. Vander Vaart was read to the delegates. The statement indicates that because of sharp theological differences he has decided to resign from the CRCNA and he is exploring what his next steps will be. Rev. Josh Tuininga offered prayer for Rev. Vander Vaart and Destination church.
4. World Renew Report
The Chair welcomed Mr. John DeGroot. Mr. DeGroot reported on the activities, programs and the exciting things happening with World Renew.
5. Election of Delegates and Alternates to Synod 2016 5.1 Following a nomination and voting process throughout the day, the following were elected to
Synod 2016: Minister Delegate – Rev. Peter Hoytema Minister Alternate – Rev. Phil Apoll Elder Delegate – Marianne Kingma (Strathroy-‐Westmount) Elder Alternate – Bill Barneveld (Sarnia-‐Redeemer) Deacon Delegate – Margherita Bierling (Chatham-‐Calvary) Deacon Alternate – Jan den Boer (Tillsonburg) Other Officebearer Delegate – Rev. Other Officebearer Alternate – Rev. Jim Poelman 5.2 Motion made and seconded to destroy ballots … carried. Morning Refreshment Break 6. London-‐Forest City Request re Nick Vander Ploeg for Commissioned Pastor
At the September 22, 2015 meeting of Classis Chatham, with the concurrence of the Synodical Deputies, it was determined that this position is consistent with the guidelines for Commissioned Pastor.
6.1 Mr. Vander Ploeg was introduced to Classis. Mr. Vander Ploeg had previously delivered his sermon on December 13, 2015 at a service at London-‐Forest City Community Church. His sermon Simplify…Expectations was based on the assigned text of Matthew 6: 25-‐34.
6.2 Elder Peter Ott (London-‐Bethel) offered a critique of the sermon. He had evaluated the sermon together with Rev. John VanTil (London-‐Bethel). Following their report they recommended that classis proceed with the examination.
6.3 Rev. Derek Bouma (Strathroy-‐East) examined Mr. Vander Ploeg in the areas of Christian Ethics and Practica.
6.4 Rev. Darryl Meijer (Woodstock-‐Maranatha) examined Mr. Vander Ploeg in the areas of Knowledge of Scripture and Reformed Doctrine.

Classis moved to Executive Session. A motion carried that two distant students from Calvin Seminary remain to observe. A motion was made and seconded to approve Mr. Vander Ploeg as Commissioned Pastor. Following an opportunity for discussion a ballot vote was taken. Motion is carried.
6.6 Rev. Peter Hoytema (Strathroy-‐Westmount) offered words of congratulations and encouragement to Mr. Vander Ploeg and presented him with a Certificate from Classis. He then offered a prayer of thanksgiving and asked that his ministry be blessed.
7. Church Visitors Reports:
Reports were received for Tillsonburg and Mount Brydges-‐Hope Community. There was no questions or comments made.
8. Church Counselor Reports 8.1 Chatham-‐First: Rev. William Koopmans reports that the Calling Committee of Chatham-‐First
is active and at this time they have not made a recommendation to the congregation. 8.2 Sarnia-‐Living Hope: Rev. Josh Tuininga reports that Living Hope is following through with
recommendations made by this body. A Calling Committee is in place and their profile is almost finished.
8.3 Tillsonburg: Rev. Dirk Miedema was not present at the meeting. Elder Jacob Feyen of Tillsonburg reported that they are considering applying for a Calvin Seminary student for the summer.
8.4 Woodstock-‐Covenant: Rev. Norman Visser reports that Covenant hopes to make a call in the very near future.
9. Report of Credentials Committee (Part 2) 9.1 Sarnia-‐Redeemer: Would like a visit from the Church Visitors.
Response: Stated Clerk has contacted the visitors and a visit is planned. 9.2 Tillsonburg: Would like to express thanks to the Classical Home Missions representatives for
their assistance in recent months. Response: RFI for Home Missions Committee.
9.3 Strathroy-‐Westmount: Provided an elder nomination for Synod 2016. Response: Noted for nominations.
9.4 Chatham-‐Grace: Requests classis to make time available on the agenda for a 15-‐20 minute

discussion on the following question: How has your church proceeded with the new provisions that have been made regarding inviting baptized children to the Lord’s Table? Response: Committee recommends that we spend time at this meeting for churches to share. Chair granted an opportunity, resulting in several churches sharing their policies and practices.
10. Faith Formation Ministries
The Chair welcomed Lesli van Milligan, Regional Catalyzer for Faith Formation Ministries to address the delegates. Leslie reported on the Faith Formation programs and how they can support churches, I.e.: they are creating a Toolkit for Profession of Faith, Church School Materials. They welcome feedback from the churches.
11. The Chair closed the morning session by leading in prayer, giving thanks for our morning
session, and asking for a blessing for our meal. Lunch Break 12. Afternoon Devotions
Pastor Beth Fellinger opened the afternoon session by showing a video from the “SkitGuys.com” which encouraged us to trust our God, seek God and ask him to do whatever He will with our lives. We are God’s masterpiece. The Chair led in prayer asking that He would chisel us into His masterpiece, and He for a blessing for the afternoon session.
13. Conversation with Canadian Ministries Director
The Chair welcomed Canadian Ministries Director, Rev. Darren Roorda. Rev. Roorda shared aspects of our Denominational Ministry Plan. He highlighted and reviewed areas of the Ministry Plan Process, Leadership Development, Communications, Administration, and Connecting. I.e.: -‐ CRCNA Canadian Website ‘www.crcna.org/Canada’: including the CRC Ministry in Canada
Directory -‐ The Canadian Ministries Directory -‐ Refugee Response Link -‐ The Connecting pilot project, which is “exploring a new intention way of connecting to
each church in the classis with a personal customer service approach”. He also spoke of the Bi-‐National Ministry Plan, and the Canadian National Gathering 2016. He led delegates in an exercise, having them meet in small groups, to reflect on the strategic plan Our Journey 2020 and to provide feedback to him.
14. Classical Treasurer’s Report
Harry Verburg reported on the 2015 Classical Ministry Share report indicating that we met our budgetary requirements for 2015. He also provided the results of the survey on Ministry Share Priorities. Some themes from the survey: -‐ Generally satisfied with our current distribution -‐ No suggestions of new areas to explore -‐ More funding for church plants -‐ Review Youth Ministry expenses and determine if there is a way to reduce same or look at
alternative funding -‐ Consider a greater portion of self funding for Campus Ministry and less reliance on Classis -‐ Increase communication and share accountabilities for both Youth and Campus Ministries -‐ Consider funding other colleges or universities in our Classis to meet.

15. Classical Youth Consultant Report
The Chair welcomed our Classical Youth Consultant Hilda Steenbergen. Hilma reported of her recent activities and some future plans. She also shared a number of ‘God Moments’ from some of the participants at last year’s youth retreat. She encouraged us to keep praying for our youth, their youth leaders, as well as their parents. Pastor Aaron Thompson offered a prayer for Hilma and the Youth Ministry.
16. Campus Ministries Chaplain Reports Fanshawe College
Chaplain Kelly Sibthorpe reported on what God is doing at Fanshawe. He highlighted some of their activities. Kelly appreciates the financial and prayer support that they receive from classis.
17. Classical Standing Committee Reports 17.1 Nominating Committee: The Functionaries and Committees schedule was received for
information 17.2 Home Missions Committee: Beth Fellinger reported on CRHM: Missional Transformation
Process. She outlined the process of how this pilot project would work over the next 18-‐24 months with 6-‐8 churches from the classis working together and learning from each other. They are inviting all pastors in our classis to meet at Destination Church on Friday, February 5th to participate in a Joining the Neighbourhood workshop. Then on Saturday, February 6th lay teams from each church are invited to bring up to ten participants to lean more about Going Local and to learn more of this project. Information will be sent to the pastors and churches in the near future.

Closing & Adjournment 18.1 Vice-‐Chair Elder George Flikweert thanked the Chair for his capable leadership. 18.2 The Chair offered closing remarks, thanked Destination Church for their gracious hospitality
and closed the meeting with prayer. 18.3 Adjournment at 4:10 p.m.
