explains. “They call us and it might be

as easy as us just dispatching a crane but if their needs are com-plicated then it might involve several site visits and meetings with the customers. Proper lift planning is crucial. Right down to the working day it can be very management intensive. Some lifts take days or even weeks of planning.”

As a Vancouver Island based business, Gorosh Cranes can focus on meeting local needs without delays.

“We are not spread too thin,” says Gorosh. “Customers are not going to get a response from me saying half of our fleet is cur-rently in Vancouver or Fort. St. John. Gorosh Cranes is clearly dedicated to Vancouver Island customers.”

“I rather enjoy intricacies of the business,” he says. “Logistical challenges provide an opportun-ity to show how we set ourselves apart from our competitors. When customers repeatedly hire us, it shows that they trust us, and that we are doing something right. When new customers hire us by referral, we know we must have a sound reputation.”

Gorosh Cranes recently in-stalled a new pedestrian bridge for the penstocks at the John Hart Dam in November. “The notice was short, but I knew if I worked late into the evenings each day until the lift date, we would be ready and organized in time.” “Everything was executed exact-ly as planned and our customer and BC Hydro were impressed,”

says Gorosh. “There was a lot of hand shak-

ing after the lift that day.”T h e c o m p a n y p r i o r i t i z e s

clear and honest communica-tion. There is a commitment to avoid overpromising or offering services beyond the scope and capabilities of Gorosh Cranes. “We are always are careful not lead the customer on, or tell them we can do something that we cannot do,” Gorosh points out.

Now the operations manager for the company, Steele Gorosh has been with the family busi-ness ever since he can remember. “Even when I was in elementary school I remember working here on weekends cleaning up the tool shed. During high school I spent the afternoons after school in the yard doing repairs and maintenance.”

I n $""%, he bega n ru n n i ng cranes and then started working

in the office about four years later, where he is today.

“My grandpa started the com-pany back in &#%', so my dad John Gorosh was involved with the company since he was young as well. He bought the business in the #"’s. He still owns the com-pany and he is still actively in-volved as the owner. He leaves the day to day operations to me now.”

A conservative business phil-osophy supports Gorosh Cranes. Careful planning has prevented the company from becoming overextended whether through financial obligations or becom-ing too large. “We do not want to get so large that it would not be practical to have just one man-ager oversee it. We like to stay personal and approachable,” Gorosh says.

“We have a long-term outlook as a mid-sized company com-pared to businesses with short-er term business plans” says Gorosh. “I think it’s fair to say that our business plan is some-what generational. I’m less con-cerned with where the company is going to be & or $ years from now compared to where it is go-ing to be in (" years.”

The crane service market is highly competitive and Gorosh takes that factor into consider-ation in all stages of operations and business planning. “There are not too many local crane

users out there who are not aware of us. We have been present on Vancouver Island for a very long time. Our place in the market is therefore well cemented but we certainly don’t take that for granted,” says Gorosh.

“I can’t overstate how much we appreciate our customers,” says Gorosh. )“The revenue generated stays on the island. It has helped older employees save for retire-ment, and our younger employ-ees, such as my sister Eden who operates our boom truck save for her first house”.

Gorosh Cranes owns and oper-ates four mobile cranes and one tractor mounted boom truck. Gorosh emphasizes the import-ance of up to date equipment.)

“About #"% of our equipment has been bought in the last four years,” he says “Just last year we invested in a modern #" ton hydraulic crane.”

“With the boom truck, we can haul freight for customers. We are the only crane company on the island that delivers materials as a regular part of our business,” Gorosh explains.

A front and centre commitment to safety is central to the com-pany’s values.

“Safety is paramount. Safety is not just a slogan or motto but something that we keep in the front of our minds as a habit. We won’t go along with anything hay-wire.”

All employees are members of

the International Union of Oper-ating Engineers Loc &&%, have valid hoisting tickets, a class & driver’s license, and dangerous goods tickets.

“Right now I’m happy to say we have one of the best rosters of employees we have had in a long time. They have a great deal of experience and knowledge. We are very happy with our team” says Gorosh.

“ R e g u l a t i o n c o m p l i a n c e seems to be a growing use of the management’s time but having a superb safety record, proper in-surance and the right equipment helps a lot.”

Gorosh Cranes is at (%*" Shen-ton Road in Nanaimo.
