    Driving for Better Energy

EfficiencyUse the following tips to helpmaximize energy efficiency andrange.

In colder temperatures, while theseefficiency tips will help, the electricvehicle driving range may be lower due to higher energy usage.

    Driving Style

    Efficiency Gauge (InstrumentCluster)

The ball indicator should be keptgreen and toward the center of th

    gauge for efficient operation.

Inefficient acceleration is indicatedwhen the ball turns yellow andtravels above the center of thegauge.

Aggressive braking is indicatedwhen the ball turns yellow andtravels below the center of thegauge.

    Acceleration/Braking/Coasting

     Avoid unnecessary rapidaccelerations and decelerations.

Electric range is maximized at80 km/h (50 mph) and below. Highspeeds use more energy and cansignificantly reduce electric range

    Use cruise control whenappropriate.

    26 In Brief

  • 8/16/2019 2k16volt1stPrint

    27/368

Plan ahead for decelerations andcoast whenever possible. For example, do not rush to trafficsignals.

Do not shift to N (Neutral) to coast. The vehicle recovers energy whilecoasting and braking in D (Drive)or L (Low).

    Drive Mode and PRNDL Selection

    Use Normal Mode when possible.

Sport Mode provides moreresponsive acceleration thanNormal Mode but can reduceefficiency.

Use Mountain Mode prior toclimbing long, steep grades inmountainous areas. Be sure toengage Mountain Mode beforestarting to climb. Mountain Modereduces electric range and power but may be needed to maintainspeeds or steep grades.

Use Hold Mode on a trip where it isexpected that all of the electriccharge will be depleted. Use HoldMode mainly during highway or highspeed driving to maximize both EVmiles and fuel efficiency.

Use L (Low) in heavy stop-and-gotraffic or when traveling downhill.L (Low) requires less brake pedalapplication and provides acontrolled, efficient way to slow thevehicle down.

    Climate Setting

Using the heat and air conditioningsystems decreases the energyavailable for electric driving.

Optimal energy efficiency isachieved with the heat, air conditioning, and fan turned off.

Less energy is used at low fanspeeds. When using the fan:

.   Fan Only is the most energyefficient climate setting as long

as0 is not selected..   Use eco for moderate air

conditioning and heater operation. This is the next mostenergy efficient setting as long

as0 is not selected..   MAX provides the most comfort

but is the least energy efficient.

Use the auto heated seat featureand the heated steering wheelinstead of climate settings. Heatingthe seat and steering wheel usesless energy than heating the vehicleinterior.

Use remote start to heat or cool theinterior when the vehicle is pluggedin to maximize the electric range byutilizing electricity from the electricaloutlet.

Engine Assisted Heating,if equipped, can be personalizedwhile plugged in. See   “Engine Assist Heat Plugged In” under Vehicle Personalization  0  139.

In hot weather, avoid parking indirect sunlight or use sunshadesinside the vehicle.

Turn off the front and rear windowdefog/defrost when they are nolonger needed.

Avoid driving with the windows open

    at highway speeds.

    Vehicle Charging/Maintenance

    Charging

Keep the vehicle plugged in, evenwhen fully charged, to keep thebattery temperature ready for the

next drive. This is important whenoutside temperatures are extremelyhot or cold.

    Maintenance

Always keep the tires properlyinflated and the vehicle properlyaligned.

The weight of excess cargo in the

vehicle affects efficiency and range. Avoid carrying more than is needed.

If fuel is not regularly used, consider keeping the fuel tank only one-thirdfull. Excess fuel weight impactsefficiency and range.

For fuel recommendations, seeFuel  0  221.

Avoid unnecessary use of electricalaccessories. Power used for functions other than propelling thevehicle will reduce EV range.

Using a rooftop carrier will reduceefficiency due to additional weightand drag.
