Once again, Cardinal Mahony is asking all the parishes ofthe Archdiocese to contribute to the annual appeal known asTOGETHER IN MISSION.

The purpose of TOGETHER IN MISSION is to raise funds

to help the most needy parishes and schools in the Archdio-cese. Every parish is asked to raise 10 % of its offertory in-come (i.e., donations received through the Sunday collectionas well as from baptisms, marriages and other sacraments).

This years goal for Holy Innocents is $29,425. This is aboutthe same as last years goal which, thanks to our generousparishioners, we were able to meet.

Registered parishioners will have already received or willsoon receive an appeal letter from Cardinal Mahony himself.

Today, Commitment Sunday, we will be asking our parish-ioners to make a pledge. If everyone does his or her part, weshould be able to reach our parish goal of$29,425.

    Parish goal $29,425

    TOGETHERIN MISSION

ANNUAL APPEAL 09We need the help of every parishioner

to reach our parish goal and to help

    our fellow Catholics in need.

My Lord JesusChrist, I know Ioffended You very

much because of mysins. I ask Your for-giveness. From this dayforward, I am deter-mined to turn awayfrom sin and, withYour help, I will striveto live a life pleasing toYou. I intend to prayevery day, to attend Mass every Sunday, and todo good works for the love of You.

(In silence add your own intentions)My God and my Redeemer, if You see that in thisyear instead of being a good Catholic, I offendYou even more and place myself in danger ofeternal damnation in hell, I prefer that You callme from this world to Yourself. Dearest St. Jo-seph, patron of a holy death, intercede for me.Amen.

    FASTINGEXPRESSESOURHUNGERANDTHRISTFORGOD

In our own day, fast-ing seems to havelost something of itsspiritual meaning, andhas taken on, in a cul-ture characterized by thesearch for material well-being, a therapeutic valuefor the care of one's body. Fasting certainly bring

benefits to physical well-being, but for believers,it is, in the first place, a "therapy" to heal all that

prevents them from conformity to the will ofGod. In the Apostolic ConstitutionPnitemini of

1966, the Servant of God Paul VI saw the need topresent fasting within the call of every Christianto "no longer live for himself, but for Him wholoves him and gave himself for him, he will also

have to live for his brethren" (cf. Ch. I). Lentcould be a propitious time to present again thenorms contained in the Apostolic Constitution, sothat the authentic and perennial significance ofthis long held practice may be rediscovered, andthus assist us to mortify our egoism and open ourheart to love of God and neighbor, the first and

greatest Commandment of the new Law and com-pendium of the entire Gospel (cf. Mt 22, 34-40).

The faithful practice of fasting contributes, moreover, to conferring unity to the whole per-son, body and soul, helping to avoid sin and growin intimacy with the Lord. Saint Augustine, whoknew all too well his own negative impulses, de-fining them as "twisted and tangled knotti-ness" (Confessions, II, 10.18), writes: "I will cer-tainly impose privation, but it is so that he will

forgive me, to be pleasing in his eyes, that Imay enjoy his delightfulness" (Sermo 400, 3, 3:PL 40, 708). Denying material food, which nour-ishes our body, nurtures an interior disposition tolisten to Christ and be fed by His saving word.Through fasting and praying, we allow Him tocome and satisfy the deepest hunger that we ex-

perience in the depths of our being: the hunger

    and thirst for God.
