    Introduction

    This degree will teach you management and supervision techniques specific to the building

    industry while developing detailed knowledge about building processes and materials.

    Construction managers need to fully understand legal frameworks and the roles of various players

    within the industry, as well as being skilled with technology to manage their projects. Thesetogether with negotiation, presentation and communication skills, will be well honed during thecourse; and after two Industry Based Learning semesters of co-operative education in the

    construction industry you will know what the real world of building management is all about.

    The course has developed pathways for Quantity Surveying (QS) along with potential double

    majors in accounting and sustainability and upon satisfactory completion it is envisaged thatstudents will be able to achieve membership of the Australian Institute of Building (AIB) and

    Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS).

    Work Experience / Industry Based Learning(9 credit points)

    Students will be required to undertake 80 days of work experience in the building and constructionindustry. This will form part of the formal assessment of the degree. Industry Based Learning will

    be a co-operative education component directed by the University working in conjunction withindustry. Students will undertake distance learning subjects as well as a dissertation over two

    semesters, which may be offered in trimester mode.

    * Additional units in Quantity Survey are required to be studied instead of open elective units forstudents seeking AIQS accreditation.

    18 credit points open electives from any part of the University, as a major, a minor and/or

    individual units.

    In choosing electives students should note that no more than 30 credit points at level one is

    permitted for the entire course.

    Requirements for a degree with Honours:

    High performing students may be eligible to enrol in the Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) course,and graduate with a Bachelor of Building and Construction Management (Honours) award.

    Course Duration

    Standard six semesters full-time and two semesters part-time, or equivalent.Maximum twenty-two semesters.

    International students will need to maintain a full-time load throughout their course and may

    complete in seven semesters.

    Admission Requirements

    Normal UC requirements for admission to an undergraduate course.

    Additional requirements:

    Students will be required to obtain the necessary certification to be able to enter a building sitebefore commencing the Major in Building and Construction Management.

    Assumed Knowledge

    It is recommended that students have Year 12 Mathematics and English. International students

    need to meet the English language requirements of the University of Canberra.

    Professional Recognition

    This course has been successfully reviewed and has attained accreditation by the Australian

    Institute of Building (AIB) and the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors* (AIQS) untilDecember 2012.

    * AIQS accreditation requires certain units to be performed through the University of Canberra and

    distance learning through the University of Newcastle.
