    Engine oil pressure gauge

    How does the air bagsupplemental restraint system

    (SRS) work?T he SR S is designed to activatew hen the vehicle is in a collision,sim ilar to hitting a fixed barrierhead on at 12–24 km /h (8–14m ph).

    T he fact that the air bags did notinflate in a collision does not m ean

    that som ething is w ron g w ith thesystem . R ather,it m eans the forcesw ere not of the type sufficient tocause activation.

    T he air bags inflate and deflate

    rapidly upon activation.A fter air bag deploym ent,it isnorm al to notice a sm oke-like,pow dery residue or sm ellthe burntpropellant.T his m ay con sist ofcornstarch,talcum pow der (tolubricate the bag) or sodiumcom pounds (e.g.,baking soda) thatresult from the com bustion processthat inflates the air bag.Sm allam ounts of sodium hydroxide m aybe present w hich m ay irritate theskin and eyes,but none of theresidue is toxic.

    Several air bag systemcom p onents get hot after

    inflation.D o not touch themafter inflation.

    If the air bag is inflated,the air bag will not

    function again and must bereplaced immediately.If theair bag is not replaced,the

    unrepaired area w illincrease therisk of injury in a collision.

    T he SR S consists of:

    •   driver and passenger air bagm od ules (w hich include theinflators and air bags),

      one or m ore im pact and safingsensors,
