For 150 years, United Methodist Women members and their foremothers have advocated for children and youth around the world. United Methodist Women supports church and grassroots organizations that offer vulnerable and oppressed children opportunities to thrive—from providing access to education for youth in Haiti and Liberia to social support services for vulnerable infants and children in the United States. In the coming years, United Methodist Women will pay attention to children marginalized by the legal system. Focus will be on interrupting the school-to-prison pipeline to ad-vocate for a 25 percent decrease in the number of arrests of children and youth in schools, with specific focus on youth populations most impacted. United Methodist Women is also seeking the redesign of zero-tolerance policies in schools so that they protect rather than criminalize children.

How Does Your Offering Through A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial Help Children and Youth?National Impact

One of the organizations that A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial funds have supported is the Neighborhood Center of The United Methodist Church in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. This United Methodist Women National Mission Institu-tion is an affiliated agency of the Susquehanna Conference of United Methodist Women. It has been serving its com-munity since 1910 and specializes in helping young people discover and develop their abilities to improve their lives and the life of their community. Offerings include:

What Is A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial? A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial is an opportunity for women to reflect on the gospel of Christ and make an offering that helps sustain ministry around the country and the world. Every year, United Methodist Women members participate in A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial observance. In response to God’s love and grace, offerings collected through A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial support worthy initiatives that relate to each year’s mission focus.

The mission focus for 2019 is Building a Thriving Generation of Children and Youth Worldwide, which provides an opportunity for United Methodist Women members to learn more about the difficult circumstances children and youth face at home and abroad. All offerings received from A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial observance this year will go to programs that promote well-being and equal opportunities for children and youth in need, including:

International ImpactFunding raised through A Call to Prayer and Self- Denial reaches across borders, supporting groups such as the Youth Network Against Violence, a program of the Women and Community Association of San Francisco Libre, in Nicaragua, which was initiated and has been nurtured through United Methodist missionaries. This network of teenagers in rural Nicaragua promotes equality between men and women as well as human rights for the poor regarding health and the participation of youth in society. Their focus has been to alleviate poverty and end violence against women and youth. Informal training and formal education have made a difference here.

In Liberia, the Young People’s Ministry of the Liberia Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church has been serving the region with support from United Methodist Women. Ebola devastated the health, livelihood and community life of West Africans in 2014. To bring the epidemic under control, some traditional ways of living had to change. United Methodist youth traveled commu-nity by community in three counties of Liberia, bringing health education to residents to prevent the spread of disease. Community meetings in a central location of each village or town served as the venue for these young adults who volunteered their knowledge, talents and time to end Ebola in their home country.

Another National Mission Institution serving children and youth that has benefited from funds raised by A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial is the Neighborhood Services Organization of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In addition to providing resources for families and older adults in need, NSO operates the Carolyn Williams Center, a transitional housing facility opened in 2005 that helps young men who have aged out of foster care and are facing homelessness or other devastating prospects. The center provides a safe environment where residents can learn to live independently and develop the life skills they need to achieve and maintain permanent housing.

• Prayer cards featuring a prayer in English, Spanish and Korean that may be used during the program or used at home

• Offering envelopes for individual and group offerings

4 How Can You Promote Your Program?There are many ways you can spread the word about A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial within your community. Here are a few ideas:

United Methodist Women members raised over $685,000 through A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial offerings in 2017.

2017 Participation

There was one hundred percent conference participation in the 2017 observance of A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial. All conferences raised funds for maternal and child health programs and partners through this supplemental giving.

A Call to Prayer Giving in 2019One hundred percent of A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial offerings will go to the year’s assigned mission focus of Building a Thriving Generation of Children and Youth Worldwide. The offerings will go directly to part-ners engaged in programs and advocacy to support well-being and equal opportunities for children and youth in need.

Además de proporcionar recursos para familias y adultos mayores necesitados, NSO está a cargo del Centro Carolyn Williams, una casa de vivienda transitoria inaugurada en 2005 que ayuda a hombres jóvenes que ya no tienen edad para estar en un hogar de cuidado transitorio y se enfrentan a la realidad de la falta de vivienda u otras situaciones devastado-ras. 여선교회는 기도와 절제의 날을 준수한다. 하나님의 사랑과 은혜에 응답하여, 기도와 절제의 날에 주어진 헌금들은 그해의 선교

초점을 대표하는 사역을 지원한다.

2019년의 선교 초점은 ‘세계적으로 어린이와 청소년이 번성하는 세대를 세우기’이다. 올해의 선교 초점은 연합감리교회 여선교회

회원들이 국내적으로나 국외적으로 어린이와 청소년이 당면하고 있는 어려운 상황을 배우는 기회를 제공한다. 2019년 기도와

절제의 날 헌금은 불우 아동과 청소년들을 위하여 공평한 기회와 참살이를 촉진하는 여러 프로그램을 지원할 것이다. 다음의

사역들이 포함되어 있다:

• 학교에서 감옥으로 직통 연결 되는 관로 패기 운동의 옹호

• 폭력 반대 및 어린이 보호 프로그램

150년 동안 연합감리교회 여선교회 회원 및 선배들은 온 세계 어린이와 청소년을 위한 옹호 활동을 계속해 왔다. 연합감리교회

여선교회는 취약하고 억압당하는 어린이들이 잘 자라도록 기회를 제공하는 교회와 풀뿌리 기관들을 보조해왔다. 아이티와

라이베리아의 청소년들에게 교육 기회 제공, 국내에서는 취약한 어린이와 유아들을 위한 사회적인 지원 등의 사역이 포함되어

관로 패기 운동 옹호에 초점을 둘 것이다. 또, 연합감리교회 여선교회는 학교의 엄중 처벌 원칙의 재설계를 추구하여 어린이

범죄화 대신 그들의 보호를 옹호하는 사역에 초점을 둘 것이다.

기도와 절제의 날 헌금이 어떻게 어린이와 청소년을 돕게 되나?국내적인 큰 결실

펜실베이니아주 해리스버그에 위치한 연합감리교회 이웃 센터(Neighborhood Center of the United Methodist Church)는

기도와 절제의 날 헌금을 보조받는 기관 중의 하나이다. 이 이웃 센터는 연합감리교회 여선교회의 국내 선교 기관의 하나로

서스쿼해나(Susquehanna) 연회에 속한다. 1910년부터 이 센터는 지역 커뮤니티를 섬기면서 청소년들이 자기 지역의 생활과

커뮤니티의 삶을 향상하는 사역을 할 수 있도록 돕고 있다. 중요한 봉사 활동은 다음과 같다:

센터를 운영하고 있다. 케롤린 윌리엄스 센터는 2005년에 개관되었고, 가정위탁 보호제도의 나이를 넘어서 노숙자가 되거나

비슷한 상황에 부닥쳐있는 청년들에게 임시 거주시설을 제공하고 있다. 이 센터는 거주자들이 생활 기능을 얻고 독립해서

살 수 있는 영구 주택을 얻을 때까지 임시 거주지를 제공하고 있다.

국제적인 큰 결실

기도와 절제의 날의 헌금은 국경을 넘어 폭력 반대 청소년

네트워크 같은 그룹을 지원한다. 이 프로그램은 연합감리교회

선교사들이 니카라과에서 시작하여 키워온 샌프란시스코

리브레(San Francisco Libre)의 여성과 지역협의회의 사역이다.

니카라과 농촌의 십 대 소년들이 형성한 이 네트워크는

남녀 간의 평등을 도모하고 건강과 청소년들의 사회 참여를

위하여 빈민들의 인권 향상을 도모한다. 이 사역의 초점은

가난을 제거하고 여성과 청소년에게 미치는 폭력을 제거하는

것이다. 비공식적인 훈련과 정기적인 교육이 큰 결실을

가져왔다.

라이베리아에 위치한 연합감리교회 라이베리아 연회의 청년

사역은 연합감리교회 여선교회의 보조로 그 지역에서 봉사

활동을 하고 있다. 2014년 에볼라 출혈열이 서 아프리카인들의

지역사회, 그들의 건강, 생계 문제에 엄청난 충격을 주었다.

그 전염병을 막기 위해서는 전통적인 생활 방식에 변화가

있어야 했다. 연합감리교회 청소년들은 라이베리아 여러

지역을 다니면서 전염병 방지를 위한 건강 교육에 종사했다.

자원봉사자로 그들은 각 마을이나 도시의 중심 지역에서

주민들을 모아 자기들의 지식, 재능, 시간을 투자하면서 에볼라

출혈열의 전염을 방지했다.
