เชยงรำยสรำงบนพนทบรเวณทเปนกฏสงฆและหอฉนในสมยพระ

พทธวงศววฒน อดตเจำอำวำสวดพระแกว ลกษณะอำคำรเปน

ทรงลำนนำประยกต ขนำดกวำง ๑๐ เมตร ยำว ๒๓.๒๕ เมตร สง

สองชน โครงสรำงเปนคอนกรตเสรมเหลก ตบแตงดวยไมสกทง

ภำยนอกและภำยใน โดยมคณแมอมรำ มนกำนนท(แสงแกว)

เปนผอปถมภกำรกอสรำง มวตถประสงคเพอเปนอำคำรรวบรวม

ศลปวตถทส ำคญของวดและสงของทมผน ำมำถวำยใหอยเปน

ระบบ เปนกำรสงวนรกษำไวตลอดไปอกทงจดแสดงศลปวตถ

เหลำนใหแกผเขำชมทงนกเรยน นกศกษำ ประชำชน

นกทองเทยวชำวไทยและตำงประเทศและเปนแหลงเรยนรตำม

อธยำศยทำงดำนศำสนำและวฒนธรรมลำนนำ สมเดจพระเทพรตนรำชสดำฯสยำมบรมรำชกมำร เสดจพระรำชด ำเนนทรง

Hong LuangSaengKaew Museum Built in 1995 in

the contemporary northern style. The museum

contains numerous interesting objects, especially, of

the typical northern culture. The funding for the

building was donated by Mrs. Amara Muniganonta

(Saengkaew). HRH. Princess Maha Chakri

Sirindhorn presided over the opening on February 13,

2007

Phra Buddha Sri Chiang Rai

In the style of Chiang Saen, this bronze image,

covered with gold leaf, is seated in the position of

Calling the Earth to Witness. Designed by Associate

Professor Saner Nindej. It was commissioned in

2001 as the presiding Buddha image in the Hong

LuangSaengKaew, the museum of WatPhraKaew.

Burmese White Jade Buddha Collection

These images are in the traditional Burmese style in

which the Lord Buddha is depicted with his hair

wound into a topknot, without an icon of his aura.

His face is sharply delimited, the hairline

circumscribed, with dark eyebrows and red lips.

The family of the owner of the Baiyoke Tower in

Bangkok offered this rare collection to the temple.

แตละทองถนวสดทใชท ำมหลำยชนด เชน ไม สงกะส ผำ กระดำษ ใบ

Tung A religious or ceremonial banner. It may be created

to make merit for the spirit of the departed or for oneself in

the next life. The belief is that when one passes away, one

will raise the fringes up to the Chulamaneechedi in the

heavens. Their size, shape and style are diverse and vary

according to the rituals and ceremonies for which they are

created. They may be made of wood, metal, cloth, paper,

palm leaf and other materials.

Tung Kradang A wooden or metal banner commissioned

as an offering to the Lord Buddha. The wooden banners in

this museum depict the history of the Emerald Buddha,

according to Lanna chronicles and the history.

Buddhist Worship in Lanna

In Lanna tradition, when showing respect to the Triple

Gems, the following objects are used:

1 Khan Dok To place the offering flowers.

2 Sattaphan Seven poles candelabra.

3 Khan Kaew Tang Sam

To receive flowers, incense and candles as an offerings to

the Triple Gems: The Lord Buddha, the Dhamma, his

teachings, and the Sangha, the clergy.

4 Khan Toke Phrachao To offer food to the Lord

Buddha.

1.KhanPhookMue : A Container bedecked with flowers

and topped with cotton thread rings for tying the wrists of

the bride and groom at wedding ceremony; or tying the

wrists of novices at Buddhist ordination ceremony.

2.Khan Su-ma or Khan Sama: a container with flowers,

incense sticks and candles presented to a person one may

have offended, asking for his/ her forgiveness.

3.Khan Tang: A container of cones of flowers, betel nuts,

betel leaves, strings of betel nuts, red and white cloths,

coins, cowrie shell money and a bottle of whisky.

Khan Nam Than: A medium size container with

flowers, incense sticks and candles carried by elderly

people as the heads of the religious procession to offer

food and utensils to the monks at the temple.

มประเพณตำนขนเขำ โดยน ำอำหำรทปรงสกแลวใสขนเขำไปถวำย

Khan Khao: A tray containing bowls of food.

Northern people have a tradition of bringing food from

their houses to the temple.

อาสนา ทประทบของพระพทธเจำ ลกษณะเปนเตยงมสเสำ

ขำงบนเปนกระจง หรอโบรำณเรยก “ทงมน” ตกแตงลวดลำย

อนวจตร มขนำดตำงๆตำมก ำลงศรทธำของผสรำง เชอวำผท

เกดในปสะงำหรอปมะเมยพงสรำงถวำยจะเปนมงคลแกตน

Asana The seat or throne of the Lord Buddha. It is in

the form of a raised bed with a canopy. Decorated with

elaborate motifs, it may be of many sizes, determined by

the patron for the precise use. It is considered

meritorious for those born in the year of the horse to

commission an asana during their lifetime.

KruangSoung Royal Regalia. Used with the Asana

and other objects in important rituals pertaining to the

Buddha image or the Buddhist religion. It may be used

to represent the presence of the Lord Buddha.

Sometimes used in funeral processions of high ranking

monks.

เครองเงนลานนา ชำวลำนนำนยมน ำเงนมำท ำเปนเครองสกกำระ

เครองใช และเครองประดบ มำตงแตโบรำณ โดยมรปทรงและ

ลวดลำยทเปนเอกลกษณเฉพำะของลำนนำ

Lanna Silverware Many valued and ceremonial

implements were commissioned in silver. They were

used both at home and when making offerings in the

temple and became family heirlooms. Silver is a

precious metal found extensively in this region.

Rattanakosin Antiquities These objects are

antiquities used by an aristocratic family in the

Rattanakosin period in Bangkok. They were donated to

the temple by Khun Piyarit Pinmitrakul.

Jade Buddha The imitated Emerald Buddha made

from Burmese Jade. His Holiness theSupreme Patriarch

Somdej Phra Nyanasamuara, Wat bowonniwetwihan

presided over with SomdejPhra Buddha Chinavonges,

the abbot of WatBenchamabophit and Ecclesiastical

Regional Governor of Region 6, performed the

consecration ceremony of the Jade Buddha image at

WatPhraKaew, Chiang Rai on May 9, 1989.

Image carved of stone from the Mekong River in the

Chiang Saen style (Singh 1). This contemporary

Buddha image is in the position of Subduing Mara or

Calling the Earth to Witness.

Donation Box This wood carved and gilds Lanna

mythological swan (Phya Hong Tong) was used to

raise the Chofah to reside at the apex of the Ubosot roof.

It now invites the visitor to make merit by donating to

preservation of the sacred artifacts.

พญาลวง สตวในอดมคตของชาวลานนา ประกอบดวยสตว

๕ สายพนธ (ชาง, มา, กวาง, หงส, ปลา) มความหมายถง

พลง อ านาจ และความยงใหญ

PhyaLuang A deity of Lanna, consists of five

types of animals (elephant, horse, deer, swan, and

fish). It is believed that this sacred animal means

strength and power.

ปราสาท ทประดษฐำนพระพทธรป ทอยของเทวดำหรอสง

ศกดสทธ หลงคำมลกษณะหลำยชนซอนกนขนไปตกแตง

ลวดลำยอนวจตร Prasat Abode.The prasat is where the Buddha image,

heavenly beings or royalty may be enthroned. The roof

is the representation of Mount Meru at the center of

the universe.

PhraUpakut The supreme monk around B.E.200

who lead King Asokathe Great to visit the five

Buddhist Holy Places, Birthplace, Attitude of

suffering place, Enlightenment place, Preached the

First Sermon place, and Passed away place. Lanna

people believe that PhraUpakut still meditates in the

navel of the ocean. Whenever full moon on

Wednesday, he will come out for alms bowl and

blessing them happiness and prosperity.

Pedestal for Buddha ImageChiang Saen Style,

bronze.

In the shape of a boat or “s’pow” (sampao), it is the

belief of Lanna people that the teachings of the Lord

Buddha float us onto the path to nirvana. This pedestal

is one of the oldest pieces in the WatPhraKaew

collection. It originally served as the pedestal to one of

the Buddha images on either side of PhrachaoLaan

Tong, the presiding image in the Phraubosot.

Drum This magnificent bronze drum is known as frog

drum or rain drum. It is now believed by most

independent scholars to have originated in northern

Vietnam, Dong Son Culture, in the fifth century BC.

The original drums were used in ritual ceremonies.

ใน ๘๐ พระอสตมหำสำวก ในญปนรจกทวไปในชอ “คะเซนเนน”

(Kasennen) ส ำหรบชำวลำนนำเชอวำทำนเปนเจำแหงปญญำ

และควำมเฉลยวฉลำด

PhraSangkajai In general an image of a

bodhisattva, who is named Kasennen in Japan, in

Lanna belief, he represents the spirit of intelligence and

knowledge.

พญาลวง สตวในอดมคตของชาวลานนา ประกอบดวยสตว

๕ สายพนธ (ชาง, มา, กวาง, หงส, ปลา) มความหมายถง

พลง อ านาจ และความยงใหญ

PhyaLuang A deity of Lanna, consists of five

types of animals (elephant, horse, deer, swan, and

fish). It is believed that this sacred animal means

strength and power.

Tung A religious or ceremonial banner. It may be

created to make merit for the spirit of the departed or for

oneself in the next life. The belief is that when one

passes away, one will raise the fringes up to the

Chulamaneechedi in the heavens. Their size, shape

and style are diverse and vary according to the rituals

and ceremonies for which they are created. They may

be made of wood, metal, cloth, paper, palm leaf and

other materials.

Drum

This magnificent bronze drum is known as frog drum

or rain drum. It is now believed by most independent

scholars to have originated in northern Vietnam, Dong

Son Culture, in the fifth century BC.

The original drums were used in ritual ceremonies.

PhraProtesat In the style of Lanna, this image

reminds the believer of when the Lord Buddha first

proceeded to receive alms from his relatives who had

trouble believing in his divinity. When the appearance

of the Lord Buddha descended from heaven with

miracle rain, his family kneeled and paid their respects.

Cast in bronze and covered with gold leaf, this image

has a long history of residence at WatPhraKaew and

has participated in the annual Lenten ceremonies.

Kong Kieu The twinned arches that span the portico between

the winged roofs of the temple sanctuary. It softens the rigid

frame of the columns and reminds us of the eyebrows of the

Lord Buddha, watching over those who come to make merit. It

also reminds us as to appropriate behavior in the temple.

Asana The seat or throne of the Lord Buddha. It is in the form

of a bed with a canopy. Decorated with elaborate motifs, it may

be of many sizes, determined by the patron for the precise use.

It is considered meritorious for those born in the year of the

horse to commission an asana during their lifetime.

The bronze image is in the position of Calling the Earth

to Witness or Subduing Mara and is in the style of the

Chiang Saen period. The name relates to the fact that

the image was created in a single day.

PhraBuaKhem This is one manifestation of Phra

Upakut, representing one of the Lord Buddha’s

disciples in meditation on the ocean floor. There are 9

small raised points on the body: one on the forehead,

two on the shoulders, two on the knees, two on the hip

and two on either the wrist or the elbow, representing

the original remains of the Lord Buddha and his

disciples which were enshrined in holy reliquaries. The

name BuaKhem, meaning “head of the pin”, refers to

these small raised points. Burmese believe that

veneration of this image will help to guide them on the

right path and bring luck and prosperity.

U-Tong Buddha images in the U-Thong style (13th to

15th centuries AD) show influence from art of the Dvaravati,

Khmer and Sukhothai kingdoms. The face of the Buddha image

tends to be angular; its wide brow is outlined by with threads of

hair. Images in the U-Thong style usually in a half-lotus

meditative position, Subduing Mara.

Chiang Saen Buddha images in the Chiang Saen, or Lanna

style (14th through 16th centuries AD).These images have a

rounded face with a slight smile; the rasamee is a lotus bud and

the hair is in large curls. The edge of the robe extends to just

above the middle of the chest, the bottom edge is folded in a

forked pattern. For the most part, Chiang Saen images are

sculpted in a full lotus position, Calling the Earth to Witness.

Sukhothai During the 14th and 15th centuries AD. Buddha

images of the Sukhothai period have oval faces and the rasamee

is flame shaped. The images have extended earlobes, arched

eyebrows, a prominent chin, pointed nose and a small, rather

thin, mouth in a soft smile. The shoulders are wide and the edge

of the robe reaches the navel, ending in a forked fold. The eyelids

are full. Most Sukhothai Buddha images are presented in the

meditation position of Calling the Earth to Witness.

In Lanna tradition, when showing respect to the Triple

Gems, the following objects are used:

2 Sattaphan Seven poles candelabra.

3 Khan Kaew Tang Sam

To receive flowers, incense and candles as offerings to

the Triple Gems: The Lord Buddha, the Dhamma, his

teachings, and the Sangha, the clergy.

Phra Chao Mai Images of the Lord Buddha made of

woods, the names of which rhyme with and, therefore,

connote auspicious principles. It is believed that the one

who donates this type of Buddha image to a temple will

receive blessings according to that principle. Ex: teak

is maisak and connotes saksri which means respect

or honor.

Wooden Buddha Images It is the tradition for

Lanna men to learn to sculpt small Buddha images,

the accomplishment of which may be considered equal

to ordination. These images were created by villagers

out of medicinal woods. They may be dipped in

drinking water to determine its safety, or even grated

into traditional medicinal preparations.

Lanna Silverware Many valued and ceremonial

implements were commissioned in silver. They were

used both at home and when making offerings in the

temple and became family heirlooms. Silver is a

precious metal found extensively in this region.

Heed Tham Religious texts and books are

preserved in wooden chests. Often carved and

lacquered, they were used to store book collections in

the libraries of the temples of Lanna.

Rattanakosin period. They are used for enthroning the

Buddha image and have their origin in the elaborate

separate levels of the tables have been joined into one

single piece of furniture.
