WHAT IF…?Every year Aarhus Festival tries to break habits by asking the inclusive and challenging question ‘what if…?’

For 10 days the city is packed with suggestions on how things could be different – maybe for the bet-ter, or maybe just in trivial ways. But we always try something, because if we don’t, nothing would ever change.

Every year, 500,000 people visit Aarhus Festival for a week that is nothing like the rest of the year. The Festival is a spectacular opportunity to expose a large group of people to cultural experiences they can’t get anywhere else. Humbled by the responsibility that this brings, we do our utmost when putting together the programme. Quality is the key word for all our events, and though not all the events will speak to everyone, there has to be something for every taste. Keeping quality in mind, we have worked with the city’s architects and students to transform Aarhus’ urban spaces and make them a bit better, a bit more beautiful and a bit greener. And we have presented international and local artists in new constellations to create new, surprising and one-of-a-kind experiences for the audience as well as the artists.

This also applies to this year’s Festival, where the city’s waterways are used as means of public trans-port as part of a solution to the traffic problems. And when Danish singer Tina Dickow invites her Icelandic friends up on stage to a musical meeting between countries and cultures at the unofficial opening.

This will be my last Festival as executive director and with eight, soon to be nine, Festivals under my belt, I can conclude that Aarhus Festival is thriving – and I’m excited to see what direction it will take in the coming years.

Unofficial Opening

Down From the North / Úr Norðri

Local singer/songwriter Tina Dickow, along with mu-sical acquaintances from both Iceland and Aarhus, will unofficially open Aarhus Festival 2015 with a grand show for 10,000 people. The show aims to bridge the gap between her current home, Iceland, and her birthplace, Aarhus.

Tina Dickow will invite artists from Iceland, as well as local Aarhus artists, up on stage with her, including Icelandic music’s hottest name right now, Ásgeir Trausti, and singer in the Danish group Folkeklubben, Kjartan Arngrim.

The concert will showcase the best of both places according to Tina Dickow, who is delighted to share her view on Icelandic music with Aarhus in a great one-off show in beautiful surroundings.

Aarhus Jazz Orchestra will team up with singer Michael Møller from the electropop trio The Mountains and perform covers of indie rock tracks arranged by Søren Møller as the support act before Tina and friends take the stage.

TRIO FEAT. JOE HENRY, RHIANNON GIDDENS, TBA During his more than 25-year ca-reer as a songwriter and producer, Joe Henry has influenced Ameri-can music culture in a significant way, working with artists such as T Bone Burnett, Daniel Lanois and Brad Mehldau. As a solo artist he combines rock, jazz and blues, with particular attention on lyrics and storytelling.

Singer Rhiannon Giddens moves fluently in and out of jazz, folk and country without ever forgetting her Afro-American roots. She has impressed as part of the Grammy-winning group Carolina Chocolate Drops, and last year she released her first solo album.30 Aug. 8.00 p.m.

TRIO FEAT. JOE HENRY, GRANT-LEE PHILIPS,TBAGrant-Lee Phillips is one of his generation’s most acclaimed songwriters. On four albums as front figure in Grant-Lee Buffalo and six albums in his own name, he has captured and occasionally punctured the American Dream in his music. Honest and competent songwriting are the key words when Grant-Lee Phillips is on stage.

TRIO FEAT. M. WARD, DANIEL LANOIS, TBAGuitarist and singer M. Ward from Portland is a productive man. He is half of the duo She & Him, a member of the super group Monsters of Folk, and a solo artist with seven albums released since his debut in 1999. His skills on the guitar and his raspy voice impress time and time again and cement his place among the best song-writers in the USA.

Grammy winner Daniel Lanois is known for producing for Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris and Peter Gabriel, and, with Brian Eno, on some of U2’s most celebrated albums. He is also an expressive guitarist and profound storyteller, and is not afraid to incorporate electronic and avant-garde elements in his music.5 Sept. 8.00 p.m.

Three world-class musicians, three concerts and an impressive selection of guest appearances. That’s the recipe for great musi-cal experiences when Aarhus Festival repeats the success of putting together a trio and letting inspiration take care of the rest. One of the biggest names in Argentinian music, Diego Schissi, will be behind the piano. American Tony Garnier – bassist for Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Tom Waits and others – plays the contrabass. Swedish multi- instrumentalist Gustaf Ljunggren completes this year’s trio. IMAGERY OF PERFECTION: A GLOBAL CONCERTLast year Aarhus Festival conducted the streaming experiment ‘Death Lines’, in which artists placed around the world performed together via digital technology with sound travelling around the world at close to light speed. ‘Imagery of Perfection – A Global Concert’ builds on those experiences and adds arti-stic depth to the format. In Aarhus the audience will be guided through a dystopian setting by playwright Christian Lollike with performances by Danish act Efterklang, throat singer Tanya Tagaq, opera singer Bae Il Dong and flamenco singer Carmen Linares. Connected via the internet and shown on big screens in Aarhus, acts from Japan, Italy, Australia and the USA will take part in this digitally interactive perfor-mance.

The technology facilitating the interactive communi-cation via the internet has been partly developed at Aalborg University — Institute for electronic systems by associate professor Jan Østergaard and postdoc Jesper Sørensen.

EFTERKLANG: LEAVES – THE COLOUR OF FALLINGThis innovative and modern opera is the result of the collaboration between Danish trio Efterklang and composer Karsten Fundal. Circling around a future universe where humankind as we know it has ceased to exist, the music consists of 11 melodic songs reflec-ting the different personalities of the composers. The-se songs will be performed live in concert form with eight musicians and five singers, including famous opera singer Lisbeth Balslev and modern percussionist Ying Hsueh-Chen.

This concert will be the only opportunity to experience the music performed outside of Copenhagen and in this special concert setup.

HOWE GELB (GRANT-LEE PHILLIPS, M.WARD, ALLAN OLSEN A.O:): WAY TOO MUCH LIGHTHe has been called ‘The Godfather of Alternative Country’ and ‘Founding Father of Modern Ameri-cana’, but regardless of what you want to call him, there is no denying that Howe Gelb is a musical figure of great importance. With albums released in his own name as well as with Giant Sand, and with several artists owing their success to Howe’s foresight when it comes to discovering new musical talent, he has made a career in constantly looking for new directions in music.

Polaris Music Prize-winning Inuit throat singer Tanya Tagaq, flamenco singer Carmen Linares and pansori singer Bae Il Dong are, as individual artists, ambassadors for their different genres. Together, they form the content of an evening filled with remarkable and original per-formances, from Tanya Tagaq’s intense inhaling and exhaling, to Carmen Linares’ longing interpretations of traditional flamenco, and Bae Il Dong’s expres-sive storytelling of South Korean legends. STEFANO BOLLANI, DIEGO SCHISSI AND AARHUS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRAOne of today’s most interesting musicians teams up with Aarhus Symphony Orchestra when Italian jazz pianist extraordinaire Stefano Bollani plays at Aarhus Festival.

Alongside the orchestra he will be playing music by Bernstein and Gershwin, and after the intermission he will be joined by Diego Schissi and will set a course for more exotic waters. The two pianists will play Gershwin’s ‘Cuban Overture’ and music from Schissi’s homeland, and homeland of the tango, Argentina.

Robert Lepage: 887

Robert Lepage is a world-class name in theatre and stage art who has long been on the programme at Aarhus Festival. Now we proudly present his newest solo performance, ‘887’, which prior to Aarhus Festi-val has only been seen at one other place in Europe. The show, in which Robert Lepage functions as the only actor, stems from his own childhood memories and asks why we remember a phone number from our youth when we forget our current one. How we can remember the lyrics to a children’s song when we can forget the name of a loved one? ‘887’ explores the personal and collective memory, but also shows Robert Lepage’s personal problems with remembering texts, his past and the social reality that has formed him.

The relationship between human and digital memory is underlined in the special format of ‘887’. Robert Lepage combines his own performance with physical props and digital technology, such as when he films a miniature landscape on his mobile phone and pro-jects it onto a screen, making it part of the show.

Robert Lepage is critically acclaimed for his visionary and visual performances. He has worked with institu-tions such as the Metropolitan Opera and Cirque du Soleil and received awards in his home country of Canada as well as the rest of the world. ‘887’ at Aarhus Festival is a rare opportunity to see one of the pioneers of theatre up close and personal.

We Are Not Real

Performance

WE ARE NOT REAL Bodies of boat refugees have washed up on shore, and the reality and human misery that happens far from Danish coasts enter our conscience. Life size dolls placed in various locations in Aarhus form a memorial and remind us that refugees put their lives at risk when crossing the sea. Fortune cookies are scattered around the bodies with statements from people who saw the dangerous journey across the Mediterranean as the only option.

Sort/Hvid’s art director, Christian Lollike, created the concept with executive director of Aarhus Festival Jens Folmer Jepsen. The dolls are made by Signe Herlevsen.

Modern dance in Aarhus Festival

THUMBELINAIngrid Kristensen & Co. Dance Company explores new sides of the classic H.C. Andersen fairy tale ‘Thum-belina’. Performing on a floating stage, five dancers create a poetic and humorous piece where the water plays a key role in the story as well as being the physi-cal foundation for the performance. The depth and the playful elements in the fairy tale make the perfor-mance suitable for children as well as grown-ups.

AOIFE McATAMNEY: GREETINGS FROM DUBLINArmed with modern dance, Irish Aoife McAtamney will interpret well-known places around town through her art form. The architecture festival 1:1

THE BLUE BRIDGE‘The Blue Bridge’ is the waterway that connects Brabrand and Aarhus Centre and the new Aarhus Ø. Solar-powered boats transport citizens to work or on a scenic ride to experience the city from a whole new perspective. The watery bridge is an experiment that might turn into a more permanent solution and allow Aarhus to use its waterways for public transport.

The current debate on whether there is too much traffic in the city gave birth to the idea. In 2014 Aarhus Festival and analysis bureau Epinion asked citizens about their opinions on traffic in major cities and a clear majority felt that there are too many cars in the city. 'The Blue Bridge' is part of the answer. Expect errors and a degree of confusion, as with any newly developed and alternative solutions.

SAILINGThe dark, 42-metre-long tunnel underneath Thorvaldsensgade is temporarily transformed by the light installation ‘Sailing’ when passengers on ‘The Blue Bridge’ glide through the water. The light is controlled by sensors and lights up the tunnel as the boat sails through the darkness and into the light on the other side.

MIKADO’Mikado’ is created for Skt. Clemens Stræde to allow the audience to experience the small passage in a new way. A series of frame structures are chaotically placed, similar to the game ‘Mikado’. Every frame is covered with LED-lights that illuminate the laneway according to how many people pass through it and how they move. During the day, ‘Mikado’ is a sculp-tural frame and in the evening it transforms into a confined and intense light experience.

THE SKY BENEATH AARHUSImagine that the space under Clemens Bro is no longer a dark place you rush through to get from one place to the other, but a bright and vibrant urban space. ‘The Sky beneath Aarhus’ tracks people’s movements under and

over the bridge and triggers waves of light that tie both sides of the bridge together. The in-teraction invites Aarhus’ citizens to make an unexpected stop, cre-ating a new connection between up and down, light and darkness, safe and unsafe.

THE SOFA EXPERIENCEThe urban furniture has toured Copenhagen, the Czech Republic and Italy before returning to this year’s Aarhus Festival. Landscape architects Schøn-herr designed the 62.1-metre-long sofa that again this year will be the social centre of Store Torv. When darkness falls the sofa’s built-in light panels will light up and add another dimension to the sofa as well as the surrounding square.

PLAY THE STRINGS‘Play the Strings’ is an interactive installation of suspended strings on Salling’s façade in Søndergade. The audience is invited to play the strings, which produce a range of amazing and surprising sounds. The installation translates wind, warmth, structural mass and human input to a soundscape composed by students at DIEM at The Music Conservatory in Aarhus. The installation is created by former stu-dents at Studio M:A:D.

ONEONEInside in Lille Sal the piece ‘OneOne’ contrasts with the majesty and grandeur of the outside installation. With rocks, water, sound and light, the multimedia installation creates a cave-like atmosphere and con-nects matter and energy. ‘OneOne’ is a tactile and meditative experience and is especially suitable for children as they can feel and touch the installation.

Challenge your friends to a game of Bezzerwizzer, let the kids discover the water labyrinth, experience the inflatable intruding rabbits or just take a break from everything else and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere. The City Park encompasses all this and much more. As a meeting point in the middle of the city it represents an alternative use of urban space and creates a partnership between culture and commerce for the benefit of all.

Five giant rabbits, the tallest standing 7 metres, intrude on The City Park and bring a fairytale atmos-phere to the well-known surroundings with Amanda Parer’s installation ‘Intrude’. The Amphitheatre will display everything from taekwondo and break dancing

presented by the South Korean Embassy to live music from local festivals. Or maybe you would like to start the day with group yoga classes outside. But be careful, or the giant seagulls brought here by Snuff Puppets might steal your purse or hat when you least expect it. Everything is possible and Aarhus Festival invites you to create your own experience of The City Park with your friends or family, or just by yourself.

This year’s Night Cabaret will be a show produced especially for Aarhus Festival and performed in the theatre and cultural house Hermans in Tivoli Friheden. ‘La Soirée Extraordinaire’ includes comedians and artists of the funny, fascinating and frightening kind. When they visited Aarhus Festival with a different show in 2010, tickets were sold out in no time, so we are happy and proud to bring you their new show this year.

Food / Reception for Expats

RECEPTION FOR EXPATSAarhus Festival invites expats and their families to a special reception in the pop-up festival restaurant, The Festival Grill, on Saturday 29 August from 3–5 p.m. At the reception, you can relax with your family and meet other expats. Last year 600 expats and their families participated.

You will be welcomed by the Mayor of Aarhus, Jacob Bundsgaard, and afterwards you can experience the festival atmosphere while enjoying some light refresh-ments prepared by chef Lars Kyllesbech, the founder of restaurant Mefisto in the old Latin Quarter. You can also get a special summer treat from Misto, who will thrill your taste buds with their flavourful Italian ice cream.

The reception is just a stone’s throw from a number of other entertaining and engaging activities for the whole family, making the festival reception the perfect excuse for a day of family fun.
