    uring 2813, the gross bank %redit grew at a slower $a%e re%ording 1"1? 8o8 growth as against

    *he RB+ had administered a 1? re$o rate %ut and inje%ted li&uidity through )RR and LR %uts as alsothrough o$en market o$erations during 2813" Howe#er, banks ha#e only %ut their base rate by meager

    !"?A!"3!? owing to the li&uidity %onstraints and weak de$osit growth"

    *he shar$ industrial slowdown during 281 and 2813 took a toll on the asset &uality of the banks"

    Dross =60s of 4! listed banks went u$ by 43"1? from le#els a year ago" *he restru%tured book also

    s$iked u$ dramati%ally with re%ast assets under )R standing around !? more than the $re#ious

    year" *he re$er%ussions were largely felt by $ubli% se%tor banks as they were the ones to su$$ort the

    6ri#ate se%tor banks, on the other hand, were better $la%ed than its 6@ $eers during 2813" Betterasset &uality, higher margins and strong loan growth boosted the $erforman%e of $ri#ate banks during

    banking $enetration still stands low in %om$arison to the global ben%hmark" Hen%e, the $ressing need

    for finan%ial in%lusion and the issuan%es of new banking li%enses to the $ri#ate se%tor will %ontinue to

    take $re%eden%e e#en in 2814" *he RB+ is in the $ro%ess of issuing new bank li%enses to those $ri#ate

    $layers that would stand %onsistent with the highest standards of trans$aren%y and diligen%e"
