Activities Since Last Report

Local Company Tour: Bridger Photonics - January 22, 2015 - ~12 attendees – no cost

The student chapter walked from campus to a local optics company, Bridger Photonics, and toured the facilities. They discussed the type of research and development they do and also talked about the business.

NanoDays - April 13, 2015 - ~400 attendees – no cost

The event, put on by a number of different groups at MSU, consists of a number of experiment stations all over the SUB ballroom, each with an interesting nanotechnology-based hands-on demo. This includes a “NanoLand" area, including the play tunnels, "scaled up" props, bunny suits, and a few experiment stations. Chapter members helped out at the stations by engaging the participants and explaining the concepts at hand.

Astronomy Day - April 19, 2015 - ~400 attendees - $126.40 from IYL grant

The Museum of the Rockies hosts a number of fun and interesting astronomy (and optics in general) activities for elementary school students. Chapter members designed and put together a station for this event as part of our International Year of Light grant. Our station focused on polarization in our world. Edmund optics donated a number of linear polarizers that members cut into small squares and handed out at the event. Along with the polarizers, members handed out worksheets (attached) which we designed to have the students see polarization in a number of

$89.65 to print out the worksheets and $36.75 on pizza for the meeting where worksheets were made.

Holography Outreach – June 1st, 2015 – ~20 attendees – $789.99 from IYL grant

The chapter invited students from the physics class from Bozeman High school to the MSU campus. Here, the primary event was creating a hologram. Students could bring their own object or choose from something in the lab. The students also rotated through three other stations: polarization, lidar, and clean room. In each station, as well as the hologram creation, students were exposed to hands-on activities and current optics and photonics research.

$596.99 on holography supplies (plates and chemicals), $30.00 on parking for students, $163.00 on pizza for all the volunteers that helped make the event happen.

Lunar Eclipse Supermoon Viewing Party– September 27th, 2015 – ~20 attendees – no cost

To view the eclipse, chapter members gathered at a location in the nearby mountains. People provided snacks as everyone waited for the eclipse. Many brought cameras with tripods ready to photograph the event. Sadly, the night was cloudy and a clear view of the moon did not occur, but it turned out to be an excellent social event and a forum to discuss photography and cameras.

Local Company Tour: AdvR– November 4th, 2015 – 10 attendees – no cost

Ten members walked to nearby AdvR, a local optics company, for a tour of their facilities. The company spoke about their role in the optics market and how they make themselves profitable. They then showed us a number of different products they produced before walking us through their labs. They do a variety of work, but a lot focuses on non-linear optics.

Space Dynamics Lab and Utah State University November 11-12th, 2015 – 4 attendees – $185.94 from activity grant

We coordinated a trip to Logan, UT to tour the Space Dynamics Lab, meet the SPIE student chapter officers at Utah State, and tour some of the labs on campus. We met with a most of the officers for a dinner and then toured the labs that they worked in. The following day we toured a number of labs at SDL with one of the SPIE officers.

$113.21 on a rental car and $72.73 on gas. The kind and generous SPIE members at Utah State let us spend the night in one of their homes.

Science Fun Night Outreach Event – November 23th, 2015 – ~150 attendees – no cost

Science Fun Night is organized by the Museum of the Rockies every year where middle school and high school students come in to have fun with science. The SPIE student chapter takes part in this event regularly and helps out by having some presentations and a booth where a popular display is the Infrared camera which seems to fascinate everybody from children to their parents. We also used the Light Blox outreach kit to show what happens when colors are mixed. Finally, we had some interactive polarization demonstrations.

Organization of Club and Officer Roles

Chapter officers have created a document which highlights responsibilities of each officer and general club information. It also includes important deadlines and proper contacts at SPIE. The document should make it easier for new officers to transition into their roles.

Polarization Outreach Project

Over the course of the fall semester, a sub-group of the SPIE student chapter has been working on a large scale polarization outreach project in conjugation with a professor. The project involves SPIE members traveling to high schools around the state of Montana and giving a presentation on polarization. Afterwards, the students are entered into a polarization photo contest. Over the last few months, the chapter has been refining the presentation and practicing the talk. We have also worked on refining the rules for the photo contest and creating some interesting examples.

2016 Planned Activities

As mentioned above, a large outreach project is in the works. In the first 2-4 months of the year, chapter members will be traveling around the state of Montana giving the polarization presentation and entering the students into the photo contest. The goal is to reach between eight and sixteen high schools. We will be using funds from the International Year of Light grant to fund transportation costs.

We would like to focus on inviting a speaker for next year since we were not able to bring one in 2015. Additionally, we have thrown around the idea to coordinate with IEEE and Tau Beta Pi (the engineering honors society) to invite Jean-luc Doumont to speak about writing and presenting scientific papers.

We plan to continue the local company tours. We have not decided on one for the winter/spring semester, but have a few ideas in mind.

We would like to increase our membership. We plan to have a booth at a club fair in the winter and another one in the fall. We also plan to make announcements about SPIE and our student chapter in many electrical engineering and physics classes.

We plan to participate in Science Fun Night, NanoDays, Astronomy day, Engineerathon in the next year.

We would like to make another short trip to a lab. Much like our trip to Utah State and SDL, we would like to coordinate a tour of a similar scale lab.
