1. A critical edition of Sucarl臼mi釘a'sKasika ad Slokavarttika ゆ ohav. 1 hitherto unpublished

Sucaritamisra's Kasika published from Trivandrum in three parts stops at the

end of the section of sa'f!lbandhak$eta. The remaining sections are not yet

published although they are avai1able in manuscripts. The following is the

division of the sections in the Slokavarttika. (1.1.(1).1, for example, designates

αdhyaya 1, tada 1, (,αdhikarat_la 1), sutra 1ゲ1)

The present edition of a hitherto unpublished text is an attempt, although

modest, to provide a part of the remainder. Four manuscripts, i.e. three

Devanagari manuscripts and one Malayalam, are consulted in preparing the

present edition of KaSika ad Slokavarttikaゆohav.l.

It might appe訂 surprisingthat Sucaritamisra spends so many pages just on

a single verse. In his commentary on v. 1 Sucaritamisra offers his own critique of

apoha as a kind of introduction to the entire section. One can therefore regard

this opening part as an updated version of the Mimarp.sa rejection of apoha

reflecting the recent trends of arguments current in his time. (2) The present

portion contains new arguments developed after Kumarila.

After Dignaga, the founder of the Buddhist theory of apoha, Dharmakirti

and his successors continued to modify the theory in response to Kumarila's

criticism. (3)匂kyabuddhiand Sãntarak~ita hold the百lternal"吋卵白atthe object

of conceptual cognition is a cognition's own form (svapratibhasa). (4) Dharmottara

severely criticises this view and claims that the object of conceptual cognition is

neither external nor internal, i.e. exists neither outside nor inside the mind. (5) It

is a mere fabricated image (aropitakara), unreal (nistattva) and false (alika).

Taking into consideration both types of Buddhist theories, Sucaritamisra rebuts

the Buddhist claim. Thus the present portion provides us with a precious source

chowktlamba Sanskrit series and has been widely used because it contains all of

because the manuscrlpt ends there. The remaining sections from akrti to

sat?'Zbandhã~epaparihãra v. 39ab are covered by J ayamisIぜsSarkarika, which is

contained in出es町田 manuscript, and which starts immediately after the end of

the extant available portion of the Ta砂αrya!鴻a.Sucaritamisra・sKasika was

published仕omTrivandrum in three parts (1926, 1929, 1943). As mentioned

above, it stops at the end of出esarrzbandhak$epa (not sarrzbandhak$epaparihara!)

and白usdoes not cover spho!a and the following sections, i.e. akrti, apoha, vana,

sa1!lbandhã~epaparihãra, citrãk~epaparihãra , atman, sabdanityatva, vakya and

veda.

Previous scholars working on apoha in the Slokαvarttika, e.g. Hattori [1973]

[1975], had no other choice than to consult only the two pub1ished commentaries,

i.e. Jayamisra's Sarkar幼aand Parthasarathimisra's的layaratnakara,as well as

Kamalasila's commentary on Sãntarak~ita's Tattvasarrzgrahα, if we consider

corresponding verses which are quoted. Due to the discontinuation of the

Trivandrum publication, Sucaritamisra's commentarぁwhich0立engives the most

detailed explanation of Kumari1a's verses, and is therefore very often the most

helpful, as confirmed in other sections so far published, has unti1 now been

unavailable for the apoha section. (9)

3.百leplace ofゆohain the Slokαvarttikα

The apoha section finds its place immediately after the akrti section.

Sucaritamisra regards the apoha section as the second part of the broader akrti

section. This is indicated by his expressions in section 3.1.3.4.4: adyaparicchede

and 5.1:針。的amaparicchede,bo出 ofwhich refer to the section on akrli. In other

words, what we regard as two separate chapters, ak付iand apoha, are in fact

subdivisions of the broader akrli section.τbis view is actually supported by a

colophon of the Adyar manuscript, No. 63359. The akrti section is called

akrtigratz幼epra的αmゆμriccheda争(p.2612) and the apoha section akrtigranthe

It is probably the case出atKumarila intended出ethree subsections, akrti, apoha

and vana, as a single section. At Slokavarttika anumana 132d (yukt地sabdehi

帥抑的 Ku蹴出 附rsto the ゆohasection (in P訓

designation sabda as Par伽 sarathimisraexplains it (NRA ad Slokaゆ帥a

anumana 132:弱bdesabdãrthanirüpa~e, ゆohavãda iかartha争). (11) This is fur出er

confirmed by the existence and absence respectively of non-anu~!ubh verses m

the end of each section. Whereas the end of spho!,αis clearly marked with an

indravajra verse, the divisions between akrti and apoha, and出atbetween apoha

and vana, are not marked. See the following chart which shows the sectional

division of the Slokavarttikα, together with the verse numbers of each section.

This chart sugges臼thatthe three sections comprise a single section.

Furthermore the contextual structure of the corresponding Sãbarabhã~ya

suggests the same. Sabara opens the akrti section with a question: What is the

meaning of the word “cow" (F 40.13: atha gaur 仰 asyasabdω;ya koヤ幼α争)?After

explaining that one unquestionably perceives ak付i,Sabara introduces the

problem of the vana (forest), a case which might contradict Sabara's view. After

work of 3500 verses.

6.Sucari旬misraand Vacaspatimisra 6.1. Mter presenting the Buddhist view ( ~ 2-~ 2.4.5) and then announcing the

start of his own refutation (~3: iti yair uktam, tan pratidam uttaram),

Sucaritamisra first questions the locus (asraya) of apoha (~3.1). This strategy

can be traced back to Kumarila (Slokavarttika apoha vv. 3-9). In ~ 3.1.3

Sucaritamisra refers to Dharmottara's view that the aropita (fabricated) is the

locus of agoniv'(tti. He then criticises this view in ~ 3.1.3.2 by investigating the

aropita, observing that it has a conceptual cognition (kalpana) as its material

cause (upadana).

Kasika ~ 3.1.3.2: nãpy ωtugati~ kαtραnopadanasyα. evarrz hi tat

Furthermore, recurrence is impossible for something that has a conceptual

cognition as its material cause. For, X is [regarded as] having conceptual

cognition as its material cause, if X appears to arise when conceptual

cognition has arisen and江Xappears to perish when conceptual cognition

has perished, and not otherwise.

The fabricated image, because it is caused by a conceptual cognition

(kalPanopadana: having a conceptual cognition as its material cause), must be

different in each instance of conceptual cognition and therefore cannot have

recurrence (anug,αtz). In other words, it is not the case that the same aropita

recurs in different cases of conceptual cognition. Thus, the aropita cannot be

common (sadhararza) to all instances of conceptual cognition. Fabricated images

are different in each case of fabrication and therefore cannot be the universal

meaning of a word such as“cow".

Vacaspatimisra, on the other hand, no longer resorts to the critique of locus

in the Nyayαkanika. He is more direct to the point when he criticises

Dharmottara's view. Immediately after introducing Dharmottara's view and

commenting on MaI).(,lanamisra's original passage, he first picks up the issue that

the fabricated image cannot be universal because it must be different in each

case of conceptual cognition. His explanation, the basic idea of which is similar to

Sucaritamisra' s, is more concise than that of Suc訂 itamisra.

百lefollowing is intended [by Mat:t(,lanamisra]. (14) As is well known, it is

impossible that conceptual cognitions share the same object even if they

illuminate a false image, because the false image differs in each case of

conceptual cognition.

Related idioms, such asρrativikalpam…bhedat (1396.11-12, 1400.3-4),

prativika砂arp, bhidyamanam (1388.6) and prativika砂ambhedenα(1404.6), are

repeatedly used by Vacaspatimisra in his critique of apoha. This is indeed the

philosophical point of consequence in criticising Dharmottara's view. (15) In fact

exactly this expression is used by Sucaritamisra in 9 3.3.4, where he later

summarises his previous explanation in 93.1.3.2.

This is not the case, because the view出atconceptual cognitions share the

same object is already refuted. For, the fabricated images, having conceptual

cognitions as their material causes, differ in each conceptual cognition.

One can also add Sucaritamisra's yavadvikalparp, bhidyamane in 93.4.1 as a

relevant source. Considering that Vacaspatimisra's formulation of the idea is

stable as seen in his frequent, fixed use of prativikalparp, bhedat or the like

whereas Sucaritamisra's formulation is still in flux and his use ofρartivikalparp,

bhedat is found only once in the present treatise, it is possible that Vacaspatimisra

borrows Sucaritamisra's expression prativikalpam aropitanarp, bhedat from his

later explanation in 9 3.3.4.

As is well known, it is impossible for X, whose existence is solely dependent

on conceptual cognition, to be one, when conceptual cognition is different.

For such a thing appears to exist when conceptual cognition exists, appe訂 S

to arise when conceptual cognition has arisen, and appears to perish when

conceptual cognition has perished. Therefore, how can it fail to be different

if conceptual cognition is different?

The basic point that the arising and perishing of the fabricated (aropita)

correspond to those of conceptual cognition (kalPana) is the same in both texts.

In the Kasika the Buddhist opponent proposes something postulated (kalpita)

and false (alfka) as the word-meaning which is supposed to be common

(sadhara1Ja) and not unique in each instance of language use. The proponent,

however, points out the defect that then a word-meaning would be positive

(vidhirupa) and not negative (niv付tirupa,apoharupa) for the Buddhist, who is

supposed to claim, following his predecessors such as Dignaga, that anyapoha,

i.e. exclusion of the other, and not real universals such as cowness, is the word-

meaning. Vacaspatimisra's proponent points out the same defect in the same

the disputed year“898" in the均'ayasucinibandhanacan be understood as Saka

ye訂"i.e. 976 AD (Acharya [2006:xxviii]). Sucaritamisra, therefore, was probably

active mainly in the first half of the tenth century.

8. Two Buddhist theories of αρohα

Sucaritamisra distinguishes between two Buddhist theories of apoha.

Section 2.1.7: kas tasya v~aya~? svakara evety eke. kalPiωm nistattvam

ali初 mi砂anye.What is the object of出at[conceptual cognition]? Some

say that it is nothing other than [a cognition's] own form, whereas

others say that it is something postulated, unreal and false.

A similar distinction is found in Jayanta's均layamanjari.Jayanta systematically

distinguishes between the two theories by using MaI_lc,lanamisra's terminologies

concerning error (vibhrama). One theory is called atmakhyatigarbha sarafl坊(a

line of thought arisen企omatmakhyatz) and the other is asatkhyatigarbha sara型地

two theories is also found in Vacaspatimisra's Nyayakaflika. The object of

conceptual cognition is either a cognition's own form (j元anakara)or something

(αli初 bahyatva)in some cases. (47) One is the theory of jnanakaravadins (Stern

1390.8, Gosvami 132.15)/sakaravadins (Stern 1890.11, Gosvami 132.18) and the
