The event was held at Charlotte Presbyterian Church and site of Chun University, launching September 2015. Jill Gardner began the evening with a vocally rich rendition of Three Browning Songs by Amy Cheney Beach. The audience could hardly wait for her to finish the triad of songs to applaud. Hyung Yun then entered and masterfully performed Verdi's famous "Cortigianni" from Rigoletto. After a standing ovation for Hyung's riveting performance, the pair traded off, singing various selections including "Un bel di" from Madame Butterfly (Gardner) and "Il balen del suo sorriso" from Il trovatore (Yun). Standing ovations abounded as each overwhelmed the audience with incredible vocal skills and passion. In a special Christmas presentation for the evening, eight members of the Opera Carolina Chorus treated the audience to "Va pensiero" from Verdi's Nabucco, recently performed at Belk Theater, "White Christmas" (Irving Berlin), and a moving version of "Silent Night" (Gruber; arr. by Pepper Choplin), sung in rotations by the chorus in five different languages – German, English, Korean, Spanish, and Zulu. Dr. Chun congratulated the chorus on their perfect pronunciation! The chorus' vocals were impeccable, beautifully performed, and brought many in the audience, including myself, to a state a perfect rest as the words of peace and holiday reminiscence resounded both in the hall and our hearts. Jill and Hyung sang one duet from Pagliacci, "Decidi il mio destin," and moved the audience to tears and applause through their impassioned portrayal of betrayal, despair, and forbidden love. They again took turns stirring hearts with their soulful renditions of favorites―from Jill, spiritual songs ("Ride on, King Jesus," "Sweet Little Jesus Boy," and "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands") and from Hyung, Korean folk songs ("Amudo Morurago," "Gagopa," and "Sanna"). Many in the audience were visibly moved as they were seen to wipe tears from their eyes. The pair concluded with a special encore as requested by Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun (President of Chun University), Malotte's "The Lord's Prayer," for which Jill invited the audience to sing along as a personal prayer of dedication to Jesus Christ. And so the evening ended with many voices filling the hall with glorious and reverent worship. Saturday's concert was sponsored by Chun University, launching September 2015. Chun University's mission is to prepare young men and women biblical and professionally for global service. Chun University offers courses in Biblical Studies, Christian Education, and Church Music with a focus on classical education as a foundation. Baritone Hyung Yun is not only a world-class opera performer but also a scholar of music and dedicated Christian, and as such will be professor of voice in Chun University's School of Music. His educational profile includes a Bachelors degree from Seoul National University (1991); a Masters from Boston University (1995); Professional studies in Opera at Curtis Institute of Music (1999); Apprenticeships in Santa Fe (1999), Tanglewood (2000), and Merola (2002); and a Young Artist program (2002-2003). Yun also taught opera at Curtis Institute. As faculty member for Chun University, Hyung Yun will offer classes to all vocalists (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, and bass) since his musical knowledge and gifting equips him to teach across the span of vocal ranges. Students at Chun University will benefit from special ties between the Chun Group and Opera Carolina. Dr. Chun has been heavily involved as a board member with Opera Carolina for the past ten years, especially since Maestro James Meena's coming in 2002. "A Holiday Evening with Jill and Hyung" proved to be a significant Saturday evening event―two hours filled with emotion, love, and warmth through the powerful voices of Jill Gardner (soprano) and Hyung Yun (baritone) and joined by members of the Opera Carolina Chorus, accompanied by Josh Barbour, pianist. The event was held at Charlotte Presbyterian Church and site of Chun University, launching September 2015. Jill Gardner began the evening with a vocally rich rendition of Three Browning Songs by Amy Cheney Beach. The audience could hardly wait for her to finish the triad of songs to applaud. Hyung Yun then entered and masterfully performed Verdi's famous "Cortigianni" from Rigoletto. After a standing ovation for Hyung's riveting performance, the pair traded off, singing various selections including "Un bel di" from Madame Butterfly (Gardner) and "Il balen del suo sorriso" from Il trovatore (Yun). Asian cultures represented in Charlotte encompass over 13 nations. One of the missions of the CAACC is to unite all of these groups to better service the public. Asian history spans thousands of years and its culture is rich and diverse. The CAACC strives to provide business opportuni-ties and to promote business activities through cultural events, such as the annual Asian Festival & Dragon Boat Races each spring and Asian celebrations in the Fall that display our resources and share with you our ethnic qualities.

Forty fi ve years ago, there were less than 200 Asians and only 8 Asian businesses in the Regional Charlotte Area, but this number has grown to 55,000 Asians and 870 businesses directly involved with Asians. Consider-ing average gross sales of $520,000 a year per business, the Asian popula-tion of this area is generating $452 million in revenues, contributing greatly to the regional economy. The 1st Chun InternationalReading & Singing Fest ival

Chun University will open in September 2015 under the guidance of founding President Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun. But in January 2015, we will observe the 1st Chun University International Reading and Singing Festival. The reading portion of the festival will be held at the Asian Library (1339 Baxter Street). The singing portion will be held at the Chun University campus (701 Scaleybark Rd, Charlotte, NC 28209).

The purpose of the festival is to have deeper enrichment in an emotionally dry and modern lifestyle. Dr. Yeongkee Lee, Dean of the School of Music, notes the saying: "The common understanding is that man makes books but books make a better person." In his book The Church Music, Dr. Lee writes: "Singing is the common language to all humanity." The festival will be held over two weeks, during which the participants will read over five books in small groups and memorize more than five

songs. Students will have an opportunity to present what they have learned during the Participants Concert on January 30th. After the participants finish the course, they will receive a certificate and two credit hours transferable to Chun University. During the festival, there will be many events for the community. On January 24th at 7:30, Chun University will present Mr. Shaun Choo Piano Recital. Shaun was born in Singapore and began to study piano at age 7. Years of training along with passion for eloquently mastered pieces brought Shaun to preeminent study at the University Mozartium in Austria. There, he had the privilege of studying under the late renowned professor Dr. Karl-Heinz Kammerling. Shaun's mastery and natural musical instincts have brought him to the forefront of performance around the world. He won first place in The 2nd Asia Pacific International Chopin Competition. Singapore celebrates Shaun as their best pianist and Ambassador of Music. Since his studies in Austria, Shaun has won multiple international awards for his talent. He has received the acclaimed Chopin Piano Competition not once, but five times.

The second event will be held on January 30th. This Participants Con cert is focused on singing and features sopranos Sharon Neff, Ok Kim (DMA), Songi Kim, tenors Sangmin Lee and Jinseop Song, baritone Masanori Takahasi, and bass Siwon Lee. Children will sing as an ensemble. The Charlotte Mission Chorus along with the Chun Philharmonic Orchestra will perform under the direction of Dr. Yeongkee Lee. These two concerts will be a wonderful experience for the Charlotte community. All of the greater Charlotte area is invited to these free events. During the festival, there will be two master classes for youth. The first master class is for vocal instruction and will be taught by Prof. Sangmin Lee and Dr. Ok Kim. Prowill be held on January 22nd at 3:00pm in the Asian Library (1339 Baxter Street, Charlotte, NC 28204). The second master class features piano instruction and will be led by Mr. Shaun Choo. This piano master class will be held on January 27th at 3:00pm. Everyone can participate with no fee. Anyone who wants to have a master class,

The Filipiniana Library was inaugurated on December 10,2014 with a ribbon cutting and "brindis" or toast. The ceremonial ribbon was cut by no less than Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun, Founder & Owner of the largest private library of its kind, and Dr. Sunny Chun,

CFO of the Chun Group. Present were members of the Board of FAS, EM volunteers and the Chun Group staff. The nucleus of the Filipiniana Library consists of some 150 books donated by Ed and Joan Ascalon, Project Leaders of the Philippine Resource Center under the auspices of the Filipino American Spirit. a 501(c)3 organization for charity and education. The PRC was successfully launched less than a month ago, with the "Movie and Merienda" event, with the playwright/author/poet, Reme Grefalda, an Asian cultural activist and archivist, sole Curator of the Asian & Pacific Islander Collection of the Library of Congress. Sponsors and food donors of the event contributed to the starting fund for the Filipiniana Library. Another fundraiser, a "dinner catering" for the meeting and Christmas celebration of the Charlotte Dragon Boat Association on December 4,2014 added to the growing fund, thanks to the help of the dedicated volunteers and generous Filipino chefs who donated

On December 13 and 14, Central Church of God Sanctuary Choir and Orchestra presented their annual Christmas concert. This year's event "Christmas Makes Everything New" brought over 4,000 people to three free concerts on Saturday and Sunday. A full orchestra and 120 choral voices filled the sanctuary with glorious worship in celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.

The orchestra led off the spectacular event with two incredible arrangements of Christmas carols. Along with the first piece was a lovely video collage of Christmas decorations provided by Central's members. Following a grand entrance by choir members during the orchestra's second piece, the choir performed fourteen songs including a variety of both old and new arrangements, classic carols, Our God is With Us (Steven Curtis Chapman) by Central's Vocal Band, and gave a special invitation to the congregation to sing along during Silent Night and Away in a Manger. This year's musical was exceptional with the addition of a children's choir during two songs (I Heard the Bells on Christmas

Day/Peace on Earth; One Child), artists painting a mural of the nativity (Wexford Carol), and a semi-live nativity with grand-scale papier-mâché puppets of the shepherds and wise men (Hark the Herald Angels Sing / O Holy Night). The choir and orchestra began preparing in September with the usual weekly practice and additional practices on different

weeknights and weekends. Choir members know this is a calling and a privilege. Vicki (soprano): "I believe that each of us in this choir at Central Church are called to minister to others and lead others into praise and worship. As believers our hearts desire is to reach out to others and show love to others so that they may know and feel God's love for them. I love my choir family and am so thankful that as we unite and truly minister, God uses us. Not only does the choir give their time of practicing and singing, but they reach out to others individually. I have personally been blessed by Central Choir as they prayed for me, sent cards, flowers and food over this past year of my cancer battle. They are such a blessing!"

Victoria (soprano and staff member at Central Church) commented: "I cannot tell you how blessed I have been to see the work that every choir member, soloist, musician, orchestra put together, the work of sound technicians and drama team -- but most of all our leadership: director Dennis Livingston and David Culberson. On that night of the Christmas concert everything comes together so beautifully, and God is glorified." Nannette N. (soprano): "Knowing that we have the freedom to worship our Lord and Savior is such a blessing and privilege. We have the best director around. From our pianist to every member of the orchestra, and soloists - everyone gave their all. I know the Lord was pleased! His sweet Holy Spirit filled every moment." Kimbley (alto): "Being a part of this ministry is the best! I am always amazed how every year Dennis says he doesn't know what we're going to sing, which lets me

know he and David spend time with God to ensure He is pleased. "God With Us" and "Crown You King" were my favorites. I am so honored to do what I love with such an awesome group of people. God blesses us with His strength

every time we come into His presence." Among those attending the concert on Sunday evening were Drs. Ki-Hyun and Sunny Chun. As President of Chun University (opening Sept 2015), a school devoted to Church Music and Christian Education, Dr. Chun was happy to see a church music program that is such a perfect balance of the professional and the spiritual. He was overwhelmed by the excellence of the music, the words of the songs, and the pageantry of the event: "Everything was done with perfection!" Recalling the words of Pastor Loran Livingston near the close of the concert, Dr. Chun prayed in the staff devotions on Monday morning, "Lord Jesus, You do not give us joy. You ARE joy!" Sunny Chun was raised in the home of a Pentecostal pastor in Korea, and she described how the worship was genuine: "You could see the Holy Spirit in the faces of the choir and in the congregation as they joined in praise." Friends of the Chuns were also present. They left amazed and joyful, their spirits soaring having experienced for the first time the freedom of a choir's worship, hands raised and faces aglow. Dr. Chun invites the Asian

CAACC Business NetworkingCarolinasAsian-American Chamber of Commerce (CAACC) organized a very successful Holiday Business Networking event on Wednesday 3 Dec 2014 at the Chima Brazilian Steakhouse in downtown Charlotte.The room was filled with professionals, business owners,

and leaders representing various Asian countries and beyond. It was also encouraging to see some recent graduates at this event, and some of them mentioned that they were thrilled as this was their first experience attending a networking event. The positive energy in the room was really heartwarming, especially during this wonderful season.The featured speakers were Mr. Mohammad Jenatian - President

of Greater Charlotte Hospitality & Tourism Alliance, Mr. Ravi Patel - Owner of SREE Hotels, and Mr. Jo

Han - Owner of Super G-Mart. All three of them spoke with passion about their business success in this country as internationals. Their insights were extremely valuable and CAACC genuinely appreciates their valuable time spent at this event.

It was a proud moment for CAACC when Mr. Kamal Dhimal and Mr. Durga Dhimal thanked CAACC for its continued support for the refugee community. It was an elated feeling for many when they mentioned how the mentorship of CAACC had helped them start successful business in the Charlotte area after coming here as refugees from Nepal.The event became extra special when Jennifer Roberts stepped into

Publisher’s Corner Finishing The Race

Christmas time is a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ who came 2,014 years ago. If Christ did not come, we would have no hope, no salvation. But because of his birth, we have hope, we have salvation, we have everlasting life. However, for some, this time of year is one of the most difficult and alienating times of the year and some feel so hopeless that they take their own lives. This past year was a very shocking year for me when I heard that 3 of my fellow high school and college friends had committed suicide. In addition, one of my favorite actors, Robin Williams also committed suicide. I always liked Robin Williams because he brought such joy and life to his performances. And I was so sad to hear that someone who had brought such laughter into my life felt so hopeless in his that he decided to end it. How heartbreaking it must be for someone to see no end to their struggles in life that they decide they no longer want to live. Some people compare living through life to running a marathon. I ran in a marathon only one time in my life and have vowed never to do it again. It was when I was in my early 20's as a new recruit in the Korean Air Force. I had only been there for 1 and a half months and at least one person in every platoon had to run in the marathon. I was forced to enter because I was the newest and the lowest one on the totem pole and no one else wanted to do it. When I began, I noticed different approaches people had to tackling the marathon. Some would start off really fast, get cramps in their legs early on, and end the race collapsed by the wayside on the road. Others would start very slow and give

up after awhile because they would get so discouraged by the vast distance that remained ahead. My strategy was not to run too fast or too slow. Regardless of what my strategy was, I have no idea how long it took me nor do I really want to know how long it took me. I do know that I was one of the last 10 people to finish. When I reached the finish line, it had taken me so long that no one was there, except for 2 young high school students who were obviously forced to stay there against their will so that there was someone to hold the ribbon up. There were so many times during the race that I thought I had reached the end of all human endurance and wanted to quit. I had no experience, no training, and was in no shape to finish. I remember seeing the end in sight and watching the person in front of me cross the finish line. I saw how he collapsed and started crying profusely. The first thought that crossed my mind was how foolish he looked. Little did I know that once I crossed the finish line, I would cry and weep even more profusely because I was so relieved that the whole ordeal was finally over. Later I learned that out of 3,000 runners, only 10% had actually finished. Right after the race, one would think I would be bitter and resentful to my platoon mates for making me go through such an ordeal. But actually, I felt a sense of thankfulness and appreciated the opportunity to test myself and know that I was able to meet the challenge. It gave me the motivation and set the precedent to resolve that I would always finish something I started. Nowadays, it seems that many people who face hardship will resort to suicide, instead of persevering and coming out

the other end stronger. Sadly, Korea has one of the highest suicide rates among young people and the elderly. This fact is staggering considering that Korea has the 10th largest economy in the world and is an affluent country. But I believe it comes from people lacking the ability to be thankful. There are 7.2 billion people in this world. If we consider the entire population consisting of 100 people, we see the following facts: 57 people would be Asian, 21 people would be European, 14 people would live in North and South America, and 8 people would be African.In addition, 52 people would be male and 48 people would be female. 70 people would be people of color and 30 would be Caucasian. Moreover, 6 people would have 59% of the world's wealth and all 6 of those people would be American. Furthermore, 80 people would be living in substandard conditions, 70 would be illiterate, 50 would be suffering from malnutrition, 1 would have a college degree and only 1 would have a computer. If you consider these numbers, anyone who has a house, has enough food to eat, can read the newspaper, has a college degree and computer, are among the world's elite and are blessed to be among the top 1%. Many young people today who complain or want to take their life lack this perspective. Many of these young people actually have a lot to be thankful for because compared to the overwhelming majority of the world's population, they face much less adversity in their lives. Placing a spot light on a famous person who finished the race of life rather than opting out, Audrey Hepburn

comes to mind. I remember her most vividly starring in Roman Holiday. She was a very beautiful and charming lady in all of her movies. Nonetheless, how she lived her life outside of her performances was even more endearing and courageous. In her later years, she decided to stop acting and to become the goodwilll ambassador for UNICEF. She traveled all around the world making more than 50 trips abroad to help raise awareness about the plight of children in Asia, Africa, Central and South America. Before she passed away, she wrote a letter to her son stating the following, "As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself, the other for helping others." One of my granddaughters is also named Audrey. When she is old enough to understand, I will make sure to teach her about this quote and the inspiring life Audrey Hepburn lived. I will tell her how Audrey Hepburn ran the full course of her life and finished her race. So this year, I would like to encourage readers to consider the lives of those you know who finished their race and the numbers above and take them to heart. Happiness starts when you realize how blessed you are and knowing that you are in the top 1% should be something we consider when we count our blessings. My 3 high school and college classmates who took their lives were not always in the top 1%. When we were in school, Korea was one of the poorest countries in the world. But as long as you have life, you have hope and a future. Knowing how blessed you are and being thankful are key factors that will help us finish the race of life. Having all of these things in mind, this year my New Year's Resolution will be to count at least five blessings every day and to say thank you at least five times a day. Because being thankful is the beginning of your success.�

Joseph Hu in TURANDOT

Opera Carolina in conjunction with the Charlotte Asian community is proud to present T u r a n d o t , Puccini's story of an icy-cold hearted princess

conquered by love. The famous opera is set in ancient China in the Forbidden City of Peking. This vengeful princess, a loyal servant, and a passionate prince tell the tale. The plot begins with an execution. Princess Turandot's riddles have not been successfully answered by a princely suitor, and so he must

die. But the unknown Prince Calaf, whose family has been deposed in times past, falls in love with Turandot as she signals the death of the unsuccessful suitor, the Prince of Persia. Calaf strikes the ceremonial gong to announce his decision to marry the princess, and so the deadly pursuit begins. Princess Turandot's story of vengeance is described by Ping, Pong (played by Joseph Hu), and

Pang, three ministers at the palace. A family servant, the faithful Liu, declares her love to Calaf to keep him safe. But nothing will stop Calaf from pursuing Turandot. The princess tells how a conquering prince brutally murdered her ancestor, Princess Lou-Ling. For this reason, Turandot has determined never to marry, never to allow herself to love, never to allow a man to possess her. The riddles are given to Calaf, one by one. And upon Calaf's successful answers, Turandot pleas with her father to reverse his decree for her to marry. Calaf provides an option a riddle of his own which if she answers correctly, Calaf dies:

"What is my name?" Turandot has to respond at dawn. Turandot decrees no one will sleep until the name of this suitor is found. Calaf is told of her plot and sings the famous aria, Nessun Dorma (Nobody shall sleep), for the entire city will be slaughtered if no one reveals his name. Faithful servant of Calaf's family, the gentle and loving Liu, is dragged into the city with Calaf's

father, the deposed king Timur. To protect the king and the prince she loves, Liu declares she alone knows Calaf's identity. Turandot orders her to be tortured. Still, Liu will not

give his name, only that he is "love." When Liu is afraid that Calaf will attempt to free her and be killed, Liu steals a soldier's dagger and kills herself. As Liu is carried out by the guards, Timur and the entire town following the procession, Calaf and Turandot are left alone. Calaf kisses her. Turandot weeps, never having been kissed before. Then Calaf reveals his name. In the last scene, Calaf is sitting on the throne, and Turandot declares Calaf's name to the people: His name is love.

Taiwanese-American Joseph Hu (tenor), plays the part of Pong, the emperor's chef and palace minister. Among his title roles are both Pang and Pong in Turandot, Goro in Madame Butterfly, Remendado in Carmen, Abdallo in Nabucco, and Malcolm in Macbeth. He has also performed works of Bach, Handel, and Mozart with the Tulsa Philharmonic, San Antonio

Symphony, and National Symphony of Taiwan. Hu's Carnegie Hall debut was tenor soloist in Mozart's Requiem. A performance in Madame Butterfly with the San Diego Opera has earned him the critical acclaim of "first-rate comprimario tenor." Chun University & Friends X-mas Banquet This Christmas season the friends of Chun University met for the annual Christmas Gala and Banquet. The party was held Friday evening, December 5, at the Asian Library on 1339 Baxter Street in Charlotte to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. The days leading up to the party were dreary, wet, and miserably cold. But on the day of the banquet, blue skies and lovely cool temperatures allowed for a happy event for all the staff and guests. The staff of Chun Group had prepared the banquet hall of the Asian Library over two days with special flower arrangements, poinsettias, centerpieces, food preparations, special lighting, gifts for the children, and gift bags for all the special friends and guests. Representatives of the staff, Kenneth Dickson and Nicole Minford, welcomed guests and provided name tags and assistance with the guestbook. Guests began to arrive at 6:00pm. By 6:20pm, all the guests had arrived, and so the festivities began. A warm holiday welcome from Chun University president and founder, Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun and his wife Sunny Chun kicked off the party. Much to the delight of the staff, Dr. Chun then gave the annual Christmas bonuses, calling the staff forward one by one to receive the special envelopes. The entire staff then led in the singing of the chorus God is So Good in four different languages (English, Chinese, Korean, and Bulgarian) recognizing the diversity and unity of the Chun Group. The staff had also taken the time to prepare small sheets of the lyrics in the original languages with transliteration so that their friends and guests could sing along. The banquet was a delightful array of Korean and Chinese cuisine including an assortment of meat (brisket, chicken, and Moo Goo Gai Pan) and vegetable dishes, traditional kimchi, rice and noodles, and a fruit medley full of cherries, blueberries, melon, and grapes. Guests and staff enjoyed fellowship and greetings while Dr. Chun's brother Michael Chun entertained

the joyful crowd with a selection of Christmas songs. Following the meal, Dr. Chun brought forward his son and new bride, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Chun, Esquire, to speak on behalf of Asian community involvement in the political process and to introduce special guest, former Charlotte councilwoman and present mayoral candidate Mrs. Jennifer Roberts. Jennifer Roberts was delighted to address the assembly regarding the Chuns' involvement in Charlotte area Asian commerce. She also gave a stirring summons to follow the Chuns' example in taking the initiative, community involvement, and making a difference. Dr. Sunny Chun introduced her mentor and former professor, the Reverend Mrs. Joyce Miles, pastor of South China Grove Church of

God and Christian educator, to give the Christmas message. Her homily was based on Isaiah 9:6 (KJV), "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace." She noted announcement of Christ's birth by the prophet Isaiah at least 700 years prior to His coming. This alone is remarkable, for births are not announced in advance but only upon the baby's arrival. This baby would be Savior, God, and Friend, one who takes away our sins, guides us through life, bears our grief in times of sorrow, and gives us peace as we place our trust in Him. Her message was deeply personal as she gave examples from her own life how

that Jesus had ministered to her in the loss of her husband and mother. Renowned baritone and Opera Carolina star Hyung Yun then graced the guests and staff with a heart-felt and powerful rendition of O Holy Night and Gagopa. Enraptured guests were moved to their feet in awe of Hyung's performance. Jennifer Roberts also stood in applause, being overwhelmed by Hyung's ability and masterful vocals. Following this musical enchantment, Dr. Chun announced Chun University: a Christian university whose mission is to prepare students biblically and professionally for global service. The university will launch in the Fall semester of 2015 with classes in three areas: Biblical Studies, Christian education, and Church

Music. Dr. Chun introduced Ms. Nicole Minford, PhD Candidate, as Biblical Studies professor and Director of Public Relations. Ms. Minford provided details about the First International Reading and Singing Festival set for January 19-30, 2015, notably two concerts. The first concert will be given by Shaun Choo, internationally renowned pianist and winner of the Chopin Competition (March 2010, Hungary; July 2010, France; November 2010, China; 2012, South Korea). The second concert, Friday, January 30, 2015, will be a delightful combination of international talent including Sharon Neff (soprano), Ok Kim (soprano), Songi Kim (soprano), Sangmin Lee (tenor), Jinseop Song (tenor), Masanori Takahashi (baritone), and Siwon Lee (bass).

Both concerts are free events. Upon Ms. Minford's concluding remarks, Dr. Chun proudly introduced other members of the Chun University faculty and board, including Hyung Yun (professor of voice), Dr. Yeongkee Lee (Dean of Music), Mr. and Mrs. William Robinson (board), and Pastor Samuel Na (biblical studies) as well as board members of the Unity Charter School (launching in 2015). Upon calling these members forward, the guests applauded and pictures were taken to commemorate the occasion. In remembrance of their service, Dr. Ki-Hyun and Sunny Chun recognized the three veterans of the Korean War present at the gala. For Dr. Chun, this was an emotional moment since five of the few remaining Korean War veterans passed away in 2013. These veterans are now approaching their 90's. The three veterans present stood and were heartily acknowledged for their service to the Korean people. Entertainment by the Mele Kalikimaka Honolulu Girls then followed. The ladies sang and danced in traditional Hawaiian grass skirts and were bedecked with flowers in their hair. Their versions of "Mele Kalikimaka" and "White Christmas" delighted the crowd and even brought one guest to the front to join in the dance! Peter and Dr. Ankang Dong performed "Jingle Bells" and other Christmas carols on a traditional Chinese instrument and flute. Then Sunny Chun led the happy guests in Christmas carols. Following the interactive musical portion of the gala, Dr. Ki-Hyun and Sunny Chun gave gifts to lucky ticket holders. As ticket numbers were called, many gentlemen were the unlucky ticket holders to receive ladies' items! Dr. Chun graciously exchanged these items for men's gifts, much to the relief of the men and the delight of the ladies as they awaited their own numbers to be called. Children received fun toys, and to the entire party the Chun Group gave beautiful gift bags containing Asian pears and colorful scarves. In November 2014, David Landrum was awarded the Governor's Award of Excellence. The distinguished award is given to an individual demonstrating outstanding dedication and commitment to the citizens and state of North Carolina. David Landrum, a member of Charlotte Presbyterian Church, is an administrative support associate at the Communication Studies Department at the University of North Carolina at

Charlotte. For the past eight years, Landrum has taken a half day each Friday to mentor a young student 45 miles away from Charlotte in Gaston County. He was recruited by a school counselor who believed that he would be a positive influence on a then five-year old who is now 13 years old. When Landrum began as a mentor, his mentee was in the process of being placed in foster care, then being adopted. The young boy had developed learning and behavioral difficulties, which resulted in his acting out at school. Landrum faithfully and consistently arrived at Bessemer City Primary, Cherryville Elementary, Lowell Elementary, and now Holbrook Middle School each

Friday to eat lunch with the young man. Landrum also attended classes with the student, helped him with his homework, and met his legal guardians. Landrum spent most of his time providing an outlet for his mentee to discuss concerns. He made sure the child had appropriate school clothes and supplies. He is considered to be a member of the young man's family - Landrum has dinner during holidays with the family and also attends the young man's football games. His involvement had not stopped there. Landrum assisted with the cost of a field trip to the Outer Banks. He also arranged a class field trip to watch a UNCC women's basketball game. Landrum also took his mentee on a tour of the UNCC campus so that the young man could see firsthand what college life is like. In the fall of 2013, Landrum was able to treat his mentee to his first

collegiate football game when UNCC hosted Gardner-Webb. When the relationship began Landrum was facing serious health challenges. He did not allow kidney failure, daily dialysis, and eventual kidney transplant impede his commitment to the young student. His devotion has not gone unnoticed. A school counselor in Gaston County noted that "David understands the importance of building relationships with the youth and he treats all of them as if they are his own." Landrum is known at UNCC for his supportive nature, attention to detail and kind demeanor. When an associate professor shared the details of Landrum's community work, one fellow employee said, "Wow, David. I did not know you were doing those things."

Certain people may be protected from deportation by the executive measures that President Obama announced on November 20, 2014. These measures would improve immigration programs for U.S. businesses, foreign investors, researchers, inventors an skilled foreign workers as well. It is important to keep in mind that his announcement DOES NOT create a path to citizenship by granting permanent residence, otherwise known as "green cards" to immigrants. Only Congress has the authority to create new paths to green card status for immigrants. Nonetheless, these programs will allow immigrants who meet certain requirements to remain in the U.S. and have work permits. In order to qualify for the President's immigration relief, immigrants who meet certain requirements will have to send in an application to immigration authorities. As part of the application process, immigrants will have to go through security and criminal background checks. They will have to show that they have no significant criminal history and would otherwise be a person the government would consider worthy of granting immigration relief. The biggest reach of the President's immigration relief extends to immigrants who came to the U.S. when they were young and immigrants who are the parents of U.S. citizens or permanent residents. DACA - Deferred Action for Childhood ArrivalsFor those who came to the U.S. when they were young, the following are the requirements: 1) Came to the U.S. before they turned 16 years

old; 2) Have continuously lived in the U.S. since January 1, 2010; 3) Are currently in school, have graduated or obtained a certificate of completion from high school, have obtained a General Educational D e v e l o p m e n t (GED) certification, or have been honorably discharged from the Coast Guard or Armed Forces; and4) Have not been convicted of a felony, significant misdemeanor (which includes DUI), or 3 or more misdemeanors, and is not a threat to public safety or national security. This program for young people is called "Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals" or DACA. The President first announced this type of administrative relief in June of 2012. However, in his November 20, 2014 announcement, he expanded DACA eligibility. The new DACA no longer has an age limit. Previously, only those who were under 31 could apply. Now, as long as an immigrant meets the requirements above, he or she can apply even if he or she is 31 years and older.. The new DACA also changes the continuous residence requirement from June 15, 2007 to January 1, 2010. Therefore, if an immigrant has lived in the U.S. continuously since January 1, 2010, and meets the other requirements above, he or she will be eligible for the new DACA. Those who qualify for the new DACA will be able to apply to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), which was formerly called INS, beginning in mid- February 2015. It is important to note that there is no application

process for the new DACA at this time and will not be until mid-February 2015. Once the application process opens, those who follow the application process and are approved will receive a work permit for three years. Those who qualify under the former DACA that President Obama announced in June of 2012, do not need to wait until February 2015 and can apply now, both for the first time and for their 3year renewal.DAPA - Deferred Action for Parental AccountabilityFor those who are parents, the following are the requirements: 1) Have a U.S. citizen or permanent resident son or daughter as of November 2 0 , 2014; 2) Have continuously lived in the U.S. since January 1, 2010; and 3) Have not been convicted of a felony, significant misdemeanor (which includes DUI), or 3 or more misdemeanors, and is not a threat to public safety or national security. This program is called "Deferred Action for Parental Accountability" or DAPA. Those who qualify for DAPA will be able to apply to USCIS in mid-May 2015. Therefore, anyone

who is currently in deportation court, has already been ordered deported from the U.S., or is in immigration custody and who meet the above requirements, should not be removed from the U.S. and should be allowed to remain in the U.S. Although they will not be able to apply for a work permit until USCIS begins to accept applications, their protection from deportation began effective immediately after the President's announcement on November 20. If you believe you or someone you know qualifies for any of the new programs President Obama has announced, it is important that you seek proper legal advice from a lawyer who specializes in immigration law or from a non-profit organization that is able to assist immigrants. It is important to stay away from any legal advice from people who do not specialize in immigration law. If you cannot afford to hire a lawyer who specializes in immigration law, there are non-profit organizations who can help you find someone or who may provide low-cost or free assistance. It is important to keep in mind that the wrong legal advice can hurt you MORE than no legal advice so it is very important that you be careful when looking for legal help. Although the application process has not yet begun, you can get a head start by gathering your documents now. For example, you can start gathering documents showing that you have lived here since January 1, 2010 with utility bills, paystubs, tax returns, school records, etc... For more information on these programs and for the upcoming application process, be sure to check the USCIS website at www.uscis.gov. This is the official government website for this program and will have the most recent, accurate, and up to date information.�

在夏樂市南區公共圖書館(Charlotte South County Regional Library)舉辦了

「生理健康講座」,有 30 多人出席,五

位講演人圍繞幸福人生這個主題,各自

從不同角度,暢談如何理解和保持人生

的幸福,獲得出席聽眾的熱烈反響和歡

迎,現場笑聲不斷。

台灣僑委會北卡州僑務顧問、北卡大

三角區台商會會長陳陞輝先生主持會

議,首先介紹幾位講員的情況。心理醫

生朱秀芬女士第一個發言。她首先指

出,幸福人生就是心理健康的人

生。人們的思想影響憤緒,思想帶

來態度,情緒影響行動。人們不應

該在負面情緒時來做決定。她說,

正確的心態來自正確的思想,而正

確的思想來自正確的人生目標。不

要活在過去,要注重現在,就會有一個

幸福人生。 慈濟夏樂市聯絡點負責人何永坤先生

介紹了他從事慈善志工的經歷和心得體

會。他指出,這就是他的幸福人生。已

經半退休的張和晃醫師,開宗明義地指

出,幸福人生離不開身體健康。他說必

須關注全身上下各器官的狀態。他建議

當人們年過四十以後,就要每隔 5-7 年

去做腸鏡和胃鏡的檢查,肝臟也是要特

別關注的器官。

前台灣輔仁大學教授于範分享了她的

生活感受。她說,幸福人生的要訣,就

是要「求大同存小異」。做到了這點,

一切煩惱就都可以避免,生活自然幸

福。她還向大家介紹了她在手工編織的

作品,獲得大家熱烈鼓掌歡迎。

夏樂市迦密華人教會黃浩新牧師講敘了

他在五十歲時決定辭職去讀神學院的原

因,就是為了去追求人生的真諦。他

說,能夠以己之力幫助更多的人,就是

中华饮食文化历史悠久源远流长。更兼中华地域广阔,民族众多,

这些有利条件使得它在饮食文化方面博采众长,兼收并蓄,从而使之

品种丰富多彩,进而形成了独特的中华饮食风味,享誉国际,经久不

衰。为了更好的继承和发杨中华民族饮食文化,丰富人们的饮食生

活,提倡營養飲食和綠色食品,提高華洋人士对中华饮食文化的兴

李勐 2014 年 12 月 8 日,美国国会议员大卫-普莱斯,在私房菜中餐馆,和来自北卡州的华

人华侨共进午餐,在友好的气氛中,双方进

行了热烈的交流,增进了相互之间的了解。 北卡州是美国最早独立的州之一,是个非

常有发展潜力的州,经济能力和教育水平,

一直处于全国的较高水平;罗丽市和夏洛特

市,连续几年被评为全美最适合居住的城

市;近年来,吸引了大量的华人搬入,特别

是中国公司接连落户北卡,给北卡州的经济

注入了新鲜血液,联想公司投资北卡就是个

成功例子,引起了当地政府的高度重视。

11 月底,华人领袖卫高荣先生,特别策划

了这次华人对话国会议员的活动,主动联系

大卫-普莱斯,想不到,议员欣然答应,百

忙中抽身参加。 大卫-普莱斯,是国会中的重量级人物,

五朝元老,先后经历了雷根总统、老布什总

统、克林顿总统、小布什总统、欧巴马总

十歲了,夏樂華人籃球隊! 夏樂市華人籃球俱樂部日前舉行了感恩聚會暨

開展活動十週年慶功宴,宴會由該籃球俱樂部的

發起人李勐組織,總負責人王繼飛主持, 40 多人

出席,一家一菜,氣氛溫馨。 當天晚上不僅有美食,最精彩的是,請到一位

事業成功的球友李建明,暢談他們夫婦的經營美

國第二大木材生意的理念和有關木材加工常識,

聽眾大開眼界。

球友彭華介紹了有關 2 歐巴馬健保的參加事項

和罰款,也給大家提了一個醒。他指出,2015 年

是奥巴马健保的第二年,2015 年度奥巴马健保申

请日从 2014 年 11 月 15 日开始到 2015 年 2 月 15日截止。从 2014 年起,没有健康保险的人要罚

款,政府会从你的退税中扣除掉罚款。2014 年 1月 1 日后,美国公民如果没有医疗保险将违法,

并将受到罚金。罚金由美国国税局(IRS)负责征

收。第一年将为 95 美元或者是 1%的年收入,哪

个更高罚哪个。罚款数额会逐年增加。 十年前,由學體育生理專業的蕭震亨擔任教

練,夏樂地區一批熱愛籃球運動的朋友開始聯繫

參加集體活動,次年由夏樂餐館老闆李勐出面與

一些朋友一起, 組織了夏樂市籃球俱樂部,每週

六上午集體活動,年尾聚餐敘舊。三年前,該俱

樂部派出以「夏華籃球隊 」參加了南北卡四教會

組織的首屆運動會。去年,又派隊參加了「海外

華聯會」的首屆籃球錦標賽。今年更是派出由蕭

震亨擔任隊長的「夏華籃球一隊 」和李傑擔任隊

長的「夏華籃球二隊 」,參加了「海外華聯會」

的第二屆屆籃球錦標賽,每個隊員都有一套正式

的球衣。該屆比賽由北卡州大(NCSU )兄弟队

三战全胜获得冠军,新科亚军由北卡州大

(NCSU)台湾CC Tu 队获得,上届冠军菲律宾

队两胜一负屈居第三名。夏华籃球一、二队虽败

孫長寧博士講解

腰痛的預防和治療

湘巴佬 曾經在 9 月份來訪夏樂市,舉辦過首次

「健康講座及義診」的中醫師孫長寧,因當

日有不少現場來賓反應有腰疾的毛病, 日前

孫博士再應夏樂市朋友之邀,在慈濟夏樂聯

絡點會所專門針對腰痛的預防和治療,進行

叉一場健康講座,受到熱烈歡迎。 孫長寧博士來自台灣,早年獲台灣大學土

木工程學士,堪薩斯大學結構工程碩士,明

尼蘇達大學結構力學博士。學成後,在美國

多所建築師事務所和聯邦政府的「田納西水

利計劃局」工作數十年。 孫長寧博士退休

後,在「休士頓華美中醫學院」鑽研中醫

學,並取得中醫碩士和德州中醫針灸師執

照,擁有八年以上開業經驗。孫博士針對健

康和疾病的累積,內外環境的平衡,如何達

到生活簡化,並且利用生物力學病理和模糊

邏輯來輸導身心,藉由生物力學把中西醫

學,生理學、病理學跟力學結合在一起,從

身心靈的健康角度探討養生治病之道,與民

眾分享如何能做到延年益壽,保持健康的秘

訣。 首先孫長寧發揮他的力學專業知識,用圖

表說明了人體的腰部骨骼的生理結構,從而

說明腰痛的來源和防治辦法。

《黃帝內經•素問•脈要精微論》“腰者腎之

府, 轉動不能,腎將憊矣。” 《黃帝內經•靈

樞•經脈篇》:“膀胱是太陽之脈, ;挾脊抵腰,

是動則病脊痛,腰似折。” ;腰在經則屬膀胱,

在臟則屬腎 ; 腎與膀胱互為表裡 ; 腎氣虛,腰

必痛 ;腎虛為本,腰痛屬標 ; 腎主骨,腎開竅

於耳,齒為骨之餘 。他說,錐體就是磚頭, 椎

間盤就是水泥 ;錐體是硬的, 椎間盤是軟的

;錐體重疊形成椎柱, 只能承受從上向下的

壓力 ;錐柱加上前縱韌帶,後縱韌帶,黃

韌帶, 背部肌肉, 和腹部肌肉就能承受彎腰時

產生的應力 ;再加上棘上韌帶, 棘間韌帶,

橫突間韌帶, 小面關節韌帶, 就能承受左右彎

腰和扭腰時 ; 所產生的應力, 也能多承受

一些前後彎腰所 ; 產生的應力, 還限制了

腰部過度的動作 ;還有肌腱(筋)和筋膜

使得椎柱更穩定。 孫長寧指出,腰痛的五

種病因:關節炎 ;機械力 ;不良姿勢

;肌筋膜疼痛症候群 ;其他的嚴重原

因。腰痛也稱下背痛(Lower Back Pain),反

覆的腰痛是常見的臨床症狀 ,大部分是脊

柱起源的疼痛 ,小部分是源自軟組織傷損 ,

還有些源自惡性腫瘤和臟器疾病 。腎氣

虛,腰必痛。孫醫生指出,引起慢性腰部勞

損的原因可分為兩種。常見的一種是急性腰

扭傷後未經及時合理的治療,損傷的肌肉、

筋膜、韌帶修復不

良,形成較多瘢痕與

周圍組織粘連,使腰

肌的力量減弱,腰部

功能減退而產生疼

痛。;另一種原因是

來自積累性損傷,此

類病人雖無腰部外傷

史,但長期工作姿勢

不良或處於某一特定

的姿勢,過度彎腰勞

累,日久形成腰部軟

組織積累性損傷。 孫

醫生指出,腰痛的根

本原因: 生活方式不良。比如:

睡眠不正常, 情志不正常 ;營養

不正常, 運動不正常 ;導致背部

肌肉虛弱, 因而使得脊柱超載 ;

錐體變形(硬骨刺) ;椎間盤

變形(軟骨刺) ;椎管狭窄, 小

面關節紊亂, 脊椎滑脫 ;久立傷

骨,久行傷筋,久臥傷氣 ;久

視傷血,久坐傷肉

根據統計資料,在美國腰痛是美國人求醫的

第二病因,每年美國人要花費 500 億美元在

治療腰痛上。百分之五十的 20 歲年青人經

歷腰痛,百分之八十的人在 60 歲前經歷腰

痛,百分之九十的美國人經歷過腰痛,而百

分之一的美國人將由於腰痛而終生致殘。 然後,他介紹了引起腰痛的五種病因和中

醫辯證治療的各種辦法。孫長寧親自示範其

擅長的「百歲功」、「嬰兒功」和很多穴位

的按摩技巧。

孫醫生與民眾分享如何能做到延年益壽,

保持健康的秘訣,與民眾互動熱烈。孫長寧

說,充足的睡眠,均衡的飲食,和適當的運

動是公認的三項健康標準。而陽光、空氣、

關節運動不夠,滑液不足,不是病,只是

老,多做這個三維運動就會有所改善。「百

歲功」所提出的「胸腹呼吸大法」簡單有

效,治本健肺,最好在每天清晨練習,做

36 下最適當,剛開始練習時做三下,五下也

夠了。具體步驟如下: 1.聳肩,2.擴胸,3.突腹,4.繃腿,5.平腰,6.慢吐氣。、4.繃腿、5.平腰、6.慢吐氣。

依照中醫理論,實質是陰、功能是陽,呼

吸是人體的功能之一,是陽;肺、氣管、

鼻、咽、喉等組成的呼吸系統是實質,是

陰。呼和吸兩個生理功能比較起來,那個是

陰,那個是陽呢?如果和春生、夏長、秋

收、冬藏來比照就很清楚了:生長出去是陽

(呼),收藏起來是陰(吸)。這就像汽車

上的蓄電池沒電了,,要充電一樣:充電是

陰(吸),用電或是放電是陽(呼)。中醫

理論說,腎主吸氣,肺主呼氣;哮喘病人吸

氣困難是由於腎不納氣,病

因是「腎氣虛」或「腎氣不

固」;呼氣困難是由於肺本

身不健全。當然,吸氣和呼

氣困難都可能是因為呼吸肌

萎縮,所以年青時要勤習

「胸腹呼吸大法」,使呼吸

肌強健,等於是每天都去銀

行存錢(陰),到老了才能

氣血充沛,享受含飴弄孫的

福份,只要吃「利息」就有

足夠的精神去遊山玩水,真

是「四海三江任我遊」了

正宗廣式糕點-香港餅屋 李勐

最近一次夏樂市亞裔專業人士的

每月聚會,使我有緣認識了在美國

餐飲業打拚 35 年的許紹光、許安娜

夫婦。他們夫婦兩年前在夏樂市新

開了這家 AZN 亞洲風味的兩層樓的

大餐廳,位于夏洛特的 South Park

Mall 附近的皮埃蒙特中心。

許紹光先生是上海人,許安娜女

士祖籍山東。他們兩位都出生在餐

飲世家。安娜的家有许多中国餐馆

在韩国。許紹光的家人也有一系列

的餐馆位于 香港。他們擁有乔治亚

州亚特兰大 Hsu’s 和 Pacific Rim Bistro 和佛

罗里达那不勒斯的 AZN 餐厅。

這些餐廳供應泛亚洲美食,以来自中国、

日本、 韩国、 马来西亚、 越南和印尼,為

主要口味。

AZN 亞洲風味餐廳,是夏樂「華人美食家

@ usa」舉辦的「夏樂地區首次中華美食大

三十五年的辛苦 鑄就四家餐館的輝煌

买感冒药“咬文嚼字”很有用

“麻”高血压患者不宜用。

如“美扑伪麻片”,从名字就能看出其

中的主要成分。南京市中药师袁亮亮介

绍,其中“麻”指的是含有伪麻黄碱,伪

麻黄碱有助于减轻感冒、过敏性鼻炎、鼻

炎及鼻窦炎引起的鼻充血症状。但是伪麻

黄碱会引起血管的收缩,导致血压、血

糖、眼压增高,因此高血压、糖尿病和眼

压高的患者应慎用。此外,它还会影响神

经系统,加重前列腺肥大患者排尿困难和

甲亢患者头痛、失眠等。孕妇和运动员也

应慎用此成分。

“扑”司机不宜用。

扑尔敏(氯苯那敏)能缓解感冒引起的

流眼泪、打喷嚏、鼻塞等症状。南京市中

西医结合医院药学部主管药师翟慧媛介

绍,名字里带有“扑”、“敏”、“苯”

的感冒药服用后可能会引起嗜睡、困倦等

症状,所以服药期间不得驾驶机、车、

船,从事高空作业、机械作业及操作精密

仪器,服药期间最好保证休息。该院药学

部主管药师刘欣怡说,消化性溃疡所致幽

门狭窄、哮喘发作、高血压危象的人也要

慎用。

“酚”肠道溃疡者慎服。

对乙酰氨基酚(扑热息痛)是感冒药中用于缓

解疼痛和退热的重要成分。白加黑、新康

泰克、日夜百服宁、感康、快克、泰诺、

感冒灵等常用感冒药等均含扑热息痛,它

对胃黏膜有刺激作用,虽然短期用伤害较

小,但消化道溃疡患者服用期间应注意观

察,发现异常应及时停药。同时,这些药

最好不要同时吃。此类药物在服药期间还

应避免饮用含酒精饮料,患者应在医生指

导下服用该药。

“美”支气管炎患者慎用。

右美沙芬是临床常用的中枢性镇咳药物,

含此成分的感冒药通用名多含有“美”

字。药师翟慧媛提醒,慢性支气管炎、肺

炎患者应慎用这类感冒药,因为其中枢镇

咳作用可能影响痰液排出,堵塞呼吸道,

严重时可引起窒息。此外,孕妇及痰多患

者也要慎用右美沙芬类药物,妊娠 3 个月

内妇女及有精神病史者则需禁用。曾有报

道,“氢溴酸右美沙芬片”中的“美沙

芬”与止咳水里让人成瘾的“可待因”相

似,都能影响人的中枢神经系统,过量服

用会成瘾。所以,虽然美沙芬片是一种非

处方药,但是服用前一定要咨询医生和临

床药师。

“清热”风寒感冒别用

目前市面上的感冒中成药中,有很多有

“清热”字样,如感冒清热颗粒。南京市

中西医结合医院药学部主管药师刘欣怡介

绍说,清热类药物适合风热感冒的患者服

用,不适用于风寒感冒患者服用。清热是

中医名词,指清除邪热或虚热的各种治

法。由外感温邪引起的一般称为实热。邪

在气分的宜用辛宜用养阴以清热。另有气

虚而致的发热,宜用甘温补气药治疗,不

属清热范围。凉清热;热毒炽盛或夹湿的

宜用苦寒清热;热盛伤津的宜用甘寒清

热;热在营血的宜用凉血清热法等。由阴

虚而生的内热,称为虚热,宜用养阴以清

热。另有气虚而致的发热,宜用甘温补气

药治疗,不属清热范围。因此,清热类的

感冒药不适于风寒感冒患者服用

“解毒”不能长期服用

牛黄解毒丸等药的“解毒”作用能改善感

冒时的上火症状,但它们并非感冒药,如

果长期服用对身体反而不好。药师翟慧媛

介绍,中成药类的解毒药一般都含有清热成分。

服用双黄连口服液的同时不宜再服用滋补性中成

药。同样,风寒感冒患者也不宜服用。患有高血

压、心脏病、肝病、糖尿病的人、孕妇或

正在接受其他治疗的患者,均应在医师指

导下服用。服药三天后,症状无改善,或

出现发热咳嗽加重,并有其他症状如胸

闷、心悸等时应去医院就诊。

金秋時節,我們華

人美食家,是年過七

旬的长者,也有三十

出头的年轻人,大家

都有一个共同的爱

好,喜欢各式各样的

美食。这不,刚听说

香港饼屋开业,就迫

不及待的冲去,先嘗

為快。

香港饼屋,开在夏洛 G MARK 超市,

地理位置非常便利。东主钟浩淇先生是广

东人,94 年来美国,不到半年,就选择

Monroe 开设第一家中餐馆,生意不错,养

家糊口不在话下。钟先生在广东是个糕点

师傅,他对做糕点情有独钟,太太也是个

点心迷,不管工作多繁忙,小两口隔三插

五的在家研究糕点的制作。

为了能更好的推广广式糕点,夫妇两忍

痛卖掉经营了十几年的中餐馆,接手一家

墨西哥糕饼店,取名叫香港饼屋,两月前

正式开张营业。饼屋以广式点心为主,保

留了部分墨西哥糕点。

我们刚乾淨的餐座坐下,钟太太就给我

们端上了两款糕点,奶油椰丝和海绵蛋

糕。奶油椰丝是先烤好面包,切开中间,

挤上奶油,再撒上椰丝,黄色的面包、白

色的奶油椰丝非常诱人,Dandan,馬上拿

起,边吃边说;“好吃,好吃!”

海绵蛋糕,顾名思义,就是把蛋糕烤得

像海绵一样柔软,看到海绵蛋糕,我们几

个人都不约而同的说:“给 Jack 。”J

ack 是我们中的长者,德高望重,是我们美

食家的灵魂人物。两分钟后,Jack吃

完了一个海绵蛋糕,高兴地说:“太好

了,又软又好吃,

適合老年人” 不一会,钟太太

端来一份蛋糕,她

说:“你们知道这

是什么蛋糕吗?”

我看了看,金黄金

黄的,猜不出。钟

太太笑笑:“我给

你们介绍一下,这个是玉米糕,我们用新

鲜的玉米搅碎,加糖、鸡蛋、面粉,不掺

任何色素,健康食品,金黄色是玉米的本

色。”雪卉拿了第一片,很快,一条玉米

蛋糕被我们吃完,真的很香很好吃。

最后,钟太太给我们每人一小碟焦糖布

丁,布丁上有一层黏稠的焦糖,最美味的

是那个焦糖,甘甜、清香。其实,焦糖的

制作不易,是用白糖熬制而成,火候要求

很高,火大了会焦掉,火小了熬不黄。钟

先生凭着多年的经验,能熬出黄澄澄的好

焦糖。我们小口小口的吃,慢慢的品味爽

口的焦糖。 见钟太太又要转身,我们急忙制止:

“钟太太,千万别拿了,我们都饱了走不

动啦。下次再来品尝吧。”确实,香港饼

屋是个好糕点店,钟先生手艺高超,值得

一提的是他们的经营理念:新鲜现做!说

到做到,糕点都是当天做当天卖,从不过

夜。他们还优惠客

한인회비를 300여명이 자진 해서 지불하고 협찬 가맹점들로 부터 쇼핑시 5% 할인 혜택을 받고 있다. 두개로 갈라 졌던 한인회도 하나가 된후 하나의 한인회 임원회로 서로 도우며 아름다운 모습을 보이고 있다. 좀더 원활하고 협조하는 한인회가 되기 위하여 지난 11월 30일 오후 6시에 초원가든 한식당에서 이사 발기총회를 가졌다. 전 한인회 회장님들의 적극적인 참가 및 협조 격려의 손길이 역역히 보이는 바 제 1대 한인회장 김주훈, 전 회장 박익삼, 전 기현, 박상근, 성열문, 김진경,방호상 24대 회장들의 열열한 응원을 볼 수 있었다.6시에 초원가든에서 해물탕, 곱창, 김치 찌게등 푸짐한 한식음식으로 저녁 식사로 친교를 나누고 진태형 사무총장의 사회로 이사 발족식을 가졌다. 개회선언 후 국민의례, 나성균 목사의 개회기도, 전승현 회장의 인사말과 집행부 임원소개가 있었고 사업 계획안 및 재정부의 재무 보고가 있었다.제 25대 이사발족과 함께 발기이사 명단 발표가 있었다.라승군, 이충일, 성열원, 김석원, 오정국, 박동환, 이광기, 배강범, 김종선, 한철교, 최동길, 박봉철, 한명수, 조동식, 박종호, 송상협, 김정승, 이상순, 이철, 이영기,

대 한인회 이사회 이사장으로는 라승군 이사가 선출 되었다. 라승군 이사장은 8년전에 샌프란시스코에서 샬롯으로 이주 해 왔고 호텔 업을 하고 있다. 샌프란시스코 에서는 한인회를 적극적으로 돕고 회장 및 이사장을 역임 하면서 열심히

한인사회를 위해 일해 왔는데 이제는 샬롯 한인회의 새로운 도전과 활발히 지역한인들을 돕고 함께 일하는 25대 한인회에 힘이 되어 줄 이사회를 잘 이끌어 나갈 인재임에 틀림없어 한인회 임원들이 기대와 함께 기뻐했다. 한편 이사회의 총무 이사는 이사회에 선출권을 위임하기로 했다.이어 2015년 1월 17일에 있을 새해 페스티발 준비에 대해 의논 한바 장학금 준비와 행사 진행에 대한 보고가 있었다. 이날 이사 발기 총회에는 UNC Charloatte 오해수 교수외 교수 5분이 참석했는데 현재 $ 16,000 모금 된 장학금과 $4,000 을 더한 $20,000 을 교수진으로 구성된 장학 위원회에서 장학금을 제공

받기 원하는 학생들에게 적절한 심사를 거처 1월 17일에 전달 될 것이고 $4,000의 나머지 장학금 목표액이 달성되도록 성원 해 주기를 전승현 한인회장이 간곡한 부탁을 했다. 또한 대한민국 성악가 초청공연에 대한 안내가 있었는데 Chun University가 1월 19에서 30일까지 "The 1st Chun International Reading & Singing Festival" 이 있는데 다섯분의 성악가들이 1월17일에 샬롯에 도착 함으로 세계적으로 유명한 한국의 클래식 오폐라 아티스트의 공연이 있을 것을 알렸다. 본지 12월호 23 쪽에 성악가 소개가 있는데 소프라노 김옥, 테너 이상민, 소프라노 김송이, 테너 송진섭 외 클래식 아티스트들이 한국 가곡 및 음악의 진가를 들려 줄것이다. 이들은 이 샬롯 지역 한인들을 위해 무료로 아름다운 음악으로 새해 선물로 공연한다.올해도 많은 성원을 아끼지 않는 이 지역의 한인들로 부터 많은 지원을 받아 장학금외에도 한국왕복비행기 2표가 경품으로 제일 높고 한인회비추첨 상품은 김치냉장고,노래자랑1등에는 55"대형LED TV 등 푸짐한 상품을 준비하고 기다리고 있다. 신년잔치 장소는 한인장로교회 다목적사용 체육관(GYM) 이고 12면 광고를 참조하기 바란다.■

제 25대 샬롯 한인회 주최로 12월 27일 토요일 오후 6시에 아시안 도서관에서 노인공경

잔치를 2014년 마지막 토요일에 샬롯 지역 어른신들을 공경하는 시간을 가졌다. 샬롯 한인회 임원들이 정성을 기울여 장만한 짜장면은 어느 곳에서도 맛보기 힘든 특미의 짜장면으로 저녁을 대접 했는데 임원들은 물론 임원 부인들의 봉사와 써비스는 어느 고급식당보다 만족스러운 써비스였다. 전승현 한인회장은 이지역에서 짜장면과 짬뽕만드는 솜씨가 어떤 음식전문가 못지 않는 전문가 이다. 짜장면으로 저녁 식사를 마치고 한인 장로교회 나성균 목사의 기도로 간단한 예식을 가졌다. 진태형 사무 총장의 사회로 전승현 한인회장의 인사에 이어 노인회에 $1,000을 기증 했으며 새로 선출된 김수학 회장의 인사가 있었다. 이어 라승군 이사장의 소개와 인사에 이어 아시안 도서관 소유자인 전기현 전 한인회 회장은 인사후 한인회로 $10,000과 김수학

2015년도 9월에 개교하는 Chun University(총장: 전기현 박사)에서는 1월 19일부터 30일까지 The 1st Chun University International Reading and Singing Festival을 개최한다. Reading은 주로 Asian Library(1339 Baxter Street, Charlotte, NC 20204)에서 진행되며 Singing은 주로 Chun University (701 Scaleybark Road, NC 28209)에서 열릴 계획이다.“본 페스티벌의 목적은 각박한 현대사회에서 정서적으로

윤택한 삶을 영위하는데 필요한 마음의 양식을 얻게 하는데 있다.”며, “사람이 책을 만들지만 그 책은 우리를 더 나은 사람으로 만든다.” “노래는 전세계인의 공통언어이다.” 라는 문구를 이영기 박사(교회음악 학장)는 상기 시킨다. 이 목적을 달성하기 위해서 페스티벌 2주간 동안 5권 이상의 책을 읽고 소 그룹에서 서로 나누어야 하며, 5곡 이상의 노래를 공부하고 암보 하여 참가자 연주회 때 그 중 몇 곡을 발표해야 한다. 이 과정을 성공적으로 마친 참가자에게는 수료증과 함께 2학점을 수여하고 그 2학점은 Chun University에 진학할 경우 졸업학점으로 인정 받을 수 있다.이 페스티벌 기간 동안 샬롯시민에게 관심을 끌 수

있는 행사들도 많이 있다. 우선 2개의 큰 연주회가 계획되어 있다. 첫 번째는 24일(토) 오후 7시 30분에 Chun University

에서 열리는 Shaun Choo의 피아노 독주회이다. Shaun Choo는 싱가포르 출신으로서 현재는 오스트리아 비엔나에서 음악활동을 하고 있는데, 제2회 아시아-태평양 국제쇼팽피아노 콩쿠르에서 1등을 수상한 경력을 가지고 있으며 싱가포르 최고의 피아니스트로 국가 홍보 연주자로 위촉 받아 연주활동을 하고 있다. 두 번째는 30일(금) 오후 7시 30분에 역시 Chun University에서 열리는 Participants 연주회이다. 이 연주회는 주로 성악이 중심이 된다. 소프라노에 Sharon Neff를 비롯한 김옥, 김송이, 테너에 이상민, 송진섭, 바리톤에 Masanori Takahashi 등이 솔리스트로 출연하며, 어린이 참가자와 청년참가자 등도 앙상블로 출연한다. 특히 샬롯선교합창단이 마지막 무대에서 참가자들과 같이

연주하는데 이 연주회를 계기로 샬롯선교합창단(Charlotte Mission Choir)의 본격적인 활동이 시작된다.

그리고 이 연주회에는 Chun Philharmonic Orchestra가 협연하게 된다. 두 개의 연주회 모두 샬롯에서 보기 드문 좋은 무대가 될 것이라며 많은 분들이 오셔서 좋은 시간을 가지기를

바란다며 이영기 학장은 샬롯시민을 초청했다. 두 연주회 모두 입장료는 무료이다. 그리고 샬롯 지역의 청소년 음악인을

위해 2회의 마스터클래스가 진행된다. 한번은 성악마스터 클래스로서 이영기박사와 김옥박사, 이상민교수 등이 강사로 위촉되어 있는데 1월 22일 오후 3시부터 Asian Library에서 실시되며, 다음은 피아노마스터 클래스로서 Shaun Choo가 강사로 위촉되어 있고 27일 오후 3시부터 Asian Library에서 실시 된다. 참가는 누구나 할 수 있으며 참가신청비는 무료이다. 참가를 원하는 사람은 Ms. Nicole Minford교수

1. 연말 당회 개최(12/14) 한해를 잘 마무리하고 새해를 잘 여는 의욕적인 연말 당회를 잘 마치었다. 구역을 둘을 더 확장하고 특히 EM 구역을 신설함으로 그들만의 활동과 단합을 적극 지원하기로 마음을 모았다. 구역예배 강화와 연초 제직 수련회, 효도관광, 가을 가족 수련회, 전 유니버시티 후원을 위한 골프대회 개최 등을 논의하고 결정하며, 연말 전도상 시상, 수고한 청지기 격려, 상품 전달, 새해 표어 결정 " 바른예배", "바른 실천” ”바른 생활” 등 을 논의하고 당회 부서 조직들을 강화하며 힘찬 새해 발걸음을 내 디딛기로 굳게 결의하였다. 2. 영커플 영 어덜트 조직

재편 (12/14)예배후 대표들 뽑아 임원 조직을 맡기고 최강의 새해 팀을 구성키로 마음을 모았다. 영 커플 회장에 배현해 집사, 영 어덜트 회장에 전동인 형제가, 선출 되었다. 이제 까지 수고한 김영훈 형제와 노티미 형제에게도 큰 박수를 보낸다. 3. 가을 대심방 완료(12/14)각 가정을 심방하며 그 어느때 보다도 깊이 교제하며 그간의 은혜를 뜨겁게 나누고 새 비전을 함께 하는 참 의미 있는 금년의 대심방은 12/14 밤심방을 끝으로 대단원을 내리었다. 담임 목사는 심방 때 나눈 귀한 정보들을 기반으로 교우들을 더욱 잘 섬기며 큰 비전들을 함께 나누는 새해 되도록 최선을 다하여 이끌고 기도하도록 마음에 굳게 다지는 참 유익한 시간이었다.

4. 성탄축하예배 12월 21일 성탄 축하 예배에 호산나 찬양대의 칸타타 "허리굽힌 사랑"으로 찬양드리고 이어 교육부에서 준비한 유치부,

초등부, 중고등부 프로그램을 가졌다. 유치부 순서에서는 어머니들의 도움으로 어린이들의 귀여운 크리스마스

스토리가 축하 예배를 아기 예수님의 모습을 보는 양 했고 유치부는 산타클로스의 등장으로 크리스마스는 선물이 받는 날이 아니고 예수님의

생일이고 우리의 죄를 속죄 하시려 이 땅에 태어나신 날인것을 가르침을 받았다.중고등부는 SKIT 으로 죄와 싸우는 자기들의 어려움이 기도와 말씀에 의지하는 삶을 잘그려 어른들에게 더욱 저들을 위해 기도 하게하는 경종을 주었다.

교협 연합 성탄축하 예배

11월 3 - 7일에는 샬롯 본부에서는 소수 정예로 예수님의 성품을 닮은 영성과 섬기는 리더쉽을 개발 적용하여 사역을 쇄신하기 위해 처음 시작하는 PMSC(목회/선교리더십 영성연수원) 프로그램인 사역을 혁신하는 리더쉽과 영성 세미나를 김명혁 목사, 최복규 목사 그리고 이원상 목사를 강사로 모시고 강사들과 함께하는 멘토링 중심의 알찬 세미나가 열렸다.오전에는 강의 중심으로 김명혁 박사는 “십자가의영성” “눈물의 영성” “선교의 영성” 이란 주제로 3시간에 걸쳐 위대하신 신앙의 선배 목사님들의 삶 중심으로 하셨고, 최복규 목사는 “참된 사역자의 사명과 삶” 이란 주제로 2시간에 걸쳐 하셨으며, 이원상 목사는 “그리스도의 성품” 이란 주제로 2시간에 강의 하였다, 오후에는 Billy Gra-ham Library, SIM USA 본부, Gordon Conwell Seminary, JAARS 본부를 탐방 하므로 새로운 영역을 보고 배우는 값진 시간을 가졌다.저녁에는 주로 멘토링 중심의 토의 시간과 나누는 시간을 가지므로 더욱 자신들의 삶을 돌아 보며 삶의 변화를 추구하는 귀한 계기가 되었다.

2015년 기도중심사역KIMNET은2015년 새해에는 기도중심 사역에 더욱 힘써 헌신하려고 한다. 1월부터 6월까지 6개월간 미주 한인 교회협의회 (대표회장 한기홍 목사)가 주최하여 매달 모이는 연합기도성회를 지원하기 위해 본부요원으로 팀(상임대표, 사무총장, 미디어국장, 중보기도 기도 코디네이터)를 구성하여 참여 할 계획이다.그리고 본부에서는 매주 토요일 7시am~8시 am 중보 기도 코디네이터(Rev. Paul Park)의 인도로 미국의 영적 각성과 한반도의 평화 통일, 열방을 위한 중보 기도 모임을 갖고자 한다.

성탄연합예배를 샬롯교협 주최로 열린교회에서 12월21일 오후 5시에 드렸다.교회연합회원교회들이 대부분 참석하고 연합성가대는 은혜스러운 찬양으로 주님의 탄생을 마음껏 축하 했다.

샬롯에 선교합창단 탄생하다

샬롯에 Chun University가 설립되고 이영기 박사가 교회음악대학 학장으로 일을 하면서부터 선교에 관심을 가지고 있던 샬롯 지역민의 요청이 드디어 꽃을 피우게 되었다. 샬롯 한인회의 전승현 회장이 밝힌 바로는 그 동안

음악선교에 뜻이 있는 분들이 몇 차례 모여 진지하게 상의하고 그 협의 내용을 이영기 학장에게 전달하였으며 이영기 학장은 그 요청에 몇 달 동안 깊이 기도하며 생각하다가 마침내 결단을 내리고 2015년도부터 선교합창단을 운영 하겠다는 계획을 발표 했다고 했다. 이영기 학장은 새로이 창단되는 합창단의 명칭을 샬롯선교합창단 (CMC; Charlotte Mission Choir)이라고 할 것이며, 단원은 선교에 뜻이 있는 사람이면 남녀노소 누구나 참여 할 수 있다고 하였다. 그리고 가능하면 여러 교회와 여러 단체로부터 많은 분들이 참여하면 선교의 사명을 합창을 통해 더욱 잘 감당 할 수 있을 것이라고 했다. 단원이 되기 위해서는 소정의 신청서만 제출하면 된다.

전화: 704-236-5058)에게 제출하면 된다.다 같이 모여서 하는 첫 연습은 1월 24일 오후 4시부터 Chun University 강당에서 있다. 그리고 첫 연주회는 Chun University에서 개최하는 제1회 International Reading &

Singing Festival의 마지막 날 참가자 연주회 때 (January 30, 2015 Friday 19:30) 마지막 스테이지를 장식할 계획이다. 이날 연주할 곡은 ‘주의 빛 안에 살면(D. Besig)’과 ‘주 하나님 지으신 모든 세계(C.

Boburg)’이다. 반주는 Chun Philharmonic Orchestra가 맡을 예정이다. 지휘를 맡게 될 이영기 박사는 New York University에서 음악연주와 음악교육으로 Ph. D.를 받았으며 대구의

계명대학교 음악대학에서 31년간 교수로 재직하며 현재 전세계에서 활동을 하고 있는 수 많은 제자들을 길러 내었다. 그는 또한 계명대학교에 교회음악과를 신설하였으며(1984년) 예술대학원(

음악 미술 패션 무용 연극 영상)을 신설 하였고, 음악대학에 박사과정을 교육부로부터 신설

요청하여 승인을 받아 내기도 하였다. 그리고 그는 한국에서 현재 입학생이 가장 많은 계명대학교의 교무부 처장과 예술대학원장을 역임 하였으며, 계명-쇼팽음악원의 원장을 맡아 폴란드 쇼팽음악대학교와 협약을 채결하여 유럽의 명성 있는 음악가들과 많은 교분을 쌓아 학생들이 유럽에 진학하며 음악활동 하는데 큰 힘이 되도록 하였다. 그리고 아시아-태평양 국제 쇼팽피아노 콩쿠르를 기획하고 진행하여 폴란드 대통령과 영부인 등도 콩쿠르에 참여 하는 놀라운 성과를 거두기도 하였다. 한국대학평가위원인 그는 학문적으로도 “찬송가론” “영어 딕션” “시창과 청음” “대학 합창” 등의 명 저서를 내었으며, 오페라 대본으로는 “사랑의 원자탄” “요나” “달구벌 중개사” “유산 분배” “심산 김창숙” “아! 징비록” “부활” “김락” 등이 있다.

논문은 “한국음악의 개념” 등 20여 편이 음악학자들의 연구에 자주 인용 되고 있다. 연주 활동으로는 뉴욕 카네기 홀 등에서 29회 독창회를 가졌으며, 60여 편의 오페라에

바리톤 주역과 연출로서 250여 무대에 섰다. 그 외에도 MBC 가곡의 밤 등 480여 회의 음악회와, 미국, 러시아, 중국, 캐나다, 일본, 태국, 호주 등 30

여 회의 외국초청 연주회를 가졌다. 이영기 박사는 40여 년간 서문교회, Bethel Presbyterian Church in New York, 부광교회 등에서 찬양대를 지휘 하였다. 그리고 SCE합창단, 늘푸른부부합창단, 성협합창단, 로얄오페라합창단 등을 창단하고 지휘하였으며, 한국최초로 흑인영가합창을 리코딩 하여 전국에 배포 하기도 하였다. 많은 수상 가운데 눈에 띄는 것은 1977년 전국성가콩쿠르에서 1등 상, 2011년에 대한민국 나눔대상, 2012년에 제5회 대한민국오페라대상, 2013년에 세계평화대상-교육발전대상, 2014년에 옥조근정훈장 등을 수상 하였다. 이영기 박사는 합창을 통하여 선교의 사명도 잘 감당 하겠지만, 합창 활동이 샬롯 한인의 윤택하고 풍성한 삶에도 큰 도움이 될 것이라며 여러분을 초청 한다고 했다. 또 그는 모든 음악 활동뿐만 아니라 자녀의 진로에 대해서도 도움이
