Asian cultures represented in Charlotte encompass over 13 nations. One of the missions of the CAACC is to unite all of these groups to better service the public. Asian history spans thousands of years and its culture is rich and diverse. The CAACC strives to provide business op-portunities and to promote business actiAvities through cultural events, such as the annual Asian Festival & Dragon Boat Races each spring and Asian celebrations in the Fall that display our resources and share with you our ethnic qualities.

Forty years ago, there were less than 200 Asians and only 8 Asian businesses in the Regional Charlotte Area, but this number has grown to 55,000 Asians and 870 businesses directly involved with Asians. Con-sidering average gross sales of $520,000 a year per business, the Asian population of this area is generating $452 million in revenues, contribut-ing greatly to the regional economy. We invite you to join the CAACC for unique resources, and then cross the bridge between the East and the West.■ Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun (Founder & the first President)

Business showcase 2013

This year Business showcase event took place on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at The Park Expo & Conference Center, in Charlotte. Asian Chamber of Commerce was well represented, and according to Dr. Nini Bautista, Founder & Chairman Miss Asia Carolinas, “we were nicely located too....alongside the stage this time...,facing all the booths.” Business Showcase is the only trade show produced by the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce.

The 13th annual Business Showcase was a joint collaboration with Greater Hotel and Tourism Alliance held at the Park and Expo Conference Center. With 150 vendor booths, over 1100 attendees, and the best in B2B networking- Business Showcase had the city and social media buzzing! The event’s purpose brought a variety of businesses and organizations under one roof. With diversity at its best, the show-case provided a large opportunity to net-work, discover opportunities and collabo-rations in our area. The Charlotte region is a hub of activity. Visions are being created. Plans are being implemented. People are working togeth-er to accomplish goals that will preserve Charlotte as a great place to live and do business. Manufacturing, healthcare and the en-ergy industry are key components of the Charlotte business community. Charlotte is known for being a can-do town. The pub-lic and private sectors have come together

numerous times to work toward what is best for Charlotte. That partnership has helped build a strong sense of community. The Charlotte-Metro region is home to 273 Fortune 500 Companies, seven of which are headquartered in Mecklenburg County. As explained by the Chamber of Com-merce” historically, Charlotte has been perceived as a textile center and more re-cently a banking center. While Charlotte is justifiably proud of the industries with which it has been linked over the years, narrow characterizations sell this city’s economy short. Charlotte enjoys a vibrant, balanced economy that encompasses many sectors, as well as companies that range in size from multinational to microbusiness. That variety helps make Charlotte’s econ-omy one of the healthiest and strongest in the nation. Diverse business interests shel-ter the city from problems that can result from slowdowns in certain sectors, corpo-rate mergers and buyouts, plant closures and other economic challenges. The solid base also facilitates exceptionally strong growth during economic upswings. While the economy’s strength is certainly a plus, companies considering a relocation to Charlotte will find other advantages in this broad-based economy. For example, suppliers and services are abundant and convenient. Employers’ costs for wages, benefits and labor overhead, such as work-er’s compensation, unemployment and health insurance coverage, are significant-ly lower than in other regions. And Char-lotte-Mecklenburg offers an unusually rich quality of life, with ample opportunity for companies and executives who wish to actively participate in making this city an even better place to live and work. ■

As Spring is defiantly trying to shake off the cold winds and linger-ing winter (brrr) lows, the Filipino American Community of the Caro-linas (FACC) has lined up several events to welcome Spring. The first one is on Saturday, April 13, 2013 from 10 am to 6 pm, the Spring Fling, a picnic to be held at the Reedy Creek Park, 2900 Rocky River Road near the University area( See flyer in AH March). It will be a potluck lunch buffet, ( A-C noodles/pasta/rice dishes; D-G beef H-K pork L-Q chicken, P -S Veg-gie/seafood T-Z dessert, plus two 2 li soda/water by each family). There will be several lechons, the piece de resistance of Filipino celebra-tions, ( which are whole pigs roast-ed to golden crispy perfection, after being gently turned over live coals for many hours). Kids will have fun and games ,bal-loons & party favors, while for the parents, there will be dances, raffles and auction. For every one there will be entertainment numbers con-sisting of cultural presentations. Everybody is requested to bring canned goods to be donated to the Second Harvest Bank of Metrolina, "Together we CAN fight Hunger,..." For more info, contact Ms Sony Krupp [email protected]. An avid perennial supporter of the Asian Chamber and the Asian

Festival, on May 4th, the FACC will put up a Country Cultural Booth, and will have a separate stall to sell Filipiniana crafts, a food booth offering typical Filipino cui-sine, a Dragon Boat team to com-pete in the races, and a participant of the Miss Asia Carolinas. A big chunk of the Filipino community will be on hand to support all these activities, as it has done so over the years, to help celebrate the Asian American cultural heritage month of May in unison with the rest of the Asians. For details please email President Florami Lee [email protected] As a heads up, on Saturday, May 11, from 3 to 5 pm, the mostly Catholic Filipino community will celebrate one of the most popular and widely celebrated festivals, the Flores de Mayo or Mayflower Fes-tival, in honor of the Virgin Mary. It is also known as the Santacruzan , in commemoration of the find-ing of the Holy Cross by St, Helene (Reina Elena), mother of Emperor Constantine(Rey Constantino). It will be held at the St Matthews Par-ish Church / Gym, 8015 Ballan-tyne Commons PKWay, Charlotte. The meeting is held to help the Mayor and City Council know what topics are of concern to Charlotte's international community. The Mayor typically opens the forum with a short address and then attendees are asked to share their con-cerns and ideas to address these issues. This meeting allows the City to field any issues that the international commu-nity may be facing before they become major problems. It also offers the City a unique perspective on issues facing ev-ery resident, as these particular commu-nity leaders bring best practices and new ideas to the table from all over the world. Among the topics were Health, Educa-

tion, Public Safety, Small Busi-ness, Transportation, and Immi-gration. Alexis Gordon, the program Director at CIC, opened the event, and informed about the discussion groups, so each par-ticipant will represent and be part of the collaborative effort in pinpointing problems and so-lutions for the specific field of

inters or expertise. Mayor Anthony Foxx greeted the par-ticipants, and expressed the need for this event, the importance for the future development to follow the right direc-tion, and the implication it has in the strategies that have to be adopted. From education to small business and job cre-ation, the imput offered by the informa-tion produced is critical. It will consist as base for adaptive-planning, according to the dynamic and diverse community in Charlotte and surrounding areas. As part of the workshop, the event fo-cused on the nonprofit sector. Alyssa Federico, Vice President of Finance at Foundation for The Carolinas, held a presentation about the purpose and im-plications that come with being a non-profit organization in NC, and becoming a 501c IRS recognized entity. As stated in CCF report “In the face of an eco-nomic crisis unparalleled since the Great Depression, the Charlotte community saw challenges, but also opportunities. In September 2009, a coordinated com-munity effort that included input from corporate executives, foundation leaders, philanthropists, nonprofit organizations, as well as government and civic repre-sentatives culminated in the establish-ment of the Community Catalyst Fund (CCF).1 CCF is an ongoing initiative

that is dedicated to providing the non-profit sector with support for strategic transformations, including innovative service models, collaborations, partner-ships and mergers. The intention of the Catalyst program is to enable nonprofit organizations to reposition themselves to meet a future characterized by increased demands for services and diminished funding… The nonprofit sector in partic-ular experienced a remarkable increase in demand for services, as well as a con-current and significant drop in revenues as foundation giving and corporate phi-lanthropy declined, governmental bud-

gets were drastically cut, and individual donors tightened their belts.” The nonprofit sector is represented by wealth of charitable organizations serv-ing and leading our community. Com-munity’s needs and opportunities change timely, so nonprofit organizations have emerged and grown in large numbers to address these issues head-on. Many seek help with capacity and sustainability—the kind of support needed to achieve missions. Whether an organization is emerging or has deep roots in the region, Carolina Foundation can help and sim-plify the work. ■

Twenty-four students and two teach-ers descended on Charlotte from Thurs-day, March 21 through Sunday, March 24. The purpose?..... To reconnect with South and West Mecklenburg High School stu-dents who had visited these same students in Japan last summer 2012; and to give a thoughtful presentation about Japan’s “Road to Recovery: Creating Bonds.” This on-going relationship is formally called the “Kizuna Project” and is a two-year commemoration of the Great East Ja-pan Earthquake that happened on March 11, 2011. Kizuna means… Bonds of Friend-ship. The 1st phase was for MACS stu-dents to visit the areas that were affected by the earthquake and while there learned safety and prevention skills for how to en-dure and survive during a natural disaster. The 2nd phase was to invite these Japanese students from those affected areas to Char-lotte to learn more about their experiences during and after the disaster. On Saturday, March 23 the public was invited to partici-pate in this presentation, and Room 121 in the Fretwell Building, was fi lled to capac-ity. A warm welcome was offered by the Japanese Consulate-General from Atlanta, Ms. Midori Yamamitsu, who “thanked Charlotte for overwhelming compassion” in supporting the victims of the tsunami. She stated that there were 1,000 Japanese living in North & South Carolina. Akio Shioiri, head of the Japan Association in Charlotte, also welcomed the group. Eric Ward, CMS West Mecklenburg Prin-cipal, offered remarks with focus on the “bond” that had been created by his stu-dents with those from Japan and how these friendships would connect the world of the future. The Japanese students showed slides of the tsunami and clear explanations of what actually happens when an earthquake takes

place with the ensuing aftermath. Some of the facts offered were: there are 300 earth quakes every day in Japan;the center of the earthquake on March 11, 2011 was off the island of Miyagi; it struck at 14.46 with a seismic intensity of 7 and a magnitude of 9. Twenty thousand people were killed. The nuclear power plant that was compromised was in Fukushima prefecture and over 11 thousand people were evacuated. So far 26 million tons of rubble has been removed, which is the equivalent of 260,000 blue whales. The rubble was so contaminated with radiation that most people refused to clean up, causing much delay. Only 46% of the rubble had been cleared by January 31, 2013 and the remaining 54% is slated to be cleared by March 2014. There is much abnormal growth in the plants grown in the region due to the ground water and soil con-taminates. There are 330,000 people now living in makeshift housing and less than 25% of schools have been rebuilt. The limit any-one can live in the makeshift housing is 2 years, and those 2 years are now up, but still there is no other housing for these displaced people to live. Japan received aid and as-sistance form 142 countries and territories, and 39 international organizations who have contributed over $2 billionin support. Much has been done, but there is still much to do. While in the area, the Japanese students visited South & West Mecklenburg High Schools, enjoyed a fi eld trip to the Biltmore Estate with their host students, and gave the presentation at UNCC, before moving on to Seattle, WA. The event sponsors were the Japan Foundation; UNCC; Japanese Teach-ers Association in Charlotte; with support from the Japanese Association in Charlotte and Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. Asian inspired foods were served at a reception af-terwards. Local Charlotte attendees includ-ed: Weimin and Mari Yuan; Santoshi and Miyake Wantanabe; Robert and ChiePetrus-ka with daughter Christy; and Andrea Lee. For more information or how to help, please contact Consulate-General Midori Yamamitsu, [email protected] / 404-926-3004 or Akio [email protected] / 704-548-7777. ■

Immigrant’s healthcare

According to a new report released by the National Alliance on Mental Health, Asian American teenage girls have the highest rate of depressive symptoms of any racial, ethnic or gender group. From the federal reports, in Charlotte, some residents with the health mental problems where living in conditions that were not decent, safer or sanitary. The county contracted with Open Door to provide housing for clients in the Federal Shelter Plus Care Program. HUD has given the county about $4 millions to run Shelter Care since 2008. Unfortunately, taxpayers did not see their money making much difference and, as county commissioners chair Jennifer Roberts stated, the community deserves better servic-es. At the Refugee Health the Services Avail-able are: Health exams/screening and Re-ferral for follow-up medical care. Client Eligibility: Only persons who have been processed through the United States Depart-ment of Immigration and Naturalization, and granted offi cial status as a Refugee, Parolee or Asylee and are relocating to Mecklenburg County are eligible for this service. Even with Medicaid, as the only insurance plan available to cover immigrants, the family doctor/patient’s primary-care physician is not a choice. To top the undesired situation, the clinic is selected according to the zip code of the residency of the patient. In Charlotte, most of them live in 28205 and 20212 zip code area, which include only few clinics ac-cepting the low-paying clients. Many orga-nizations and healthcare providers are com-peting for funds, making the matter worse for the immigrants. “As refugees they get 8 months of Medicaid. After that, the mother may still qualify based on the age of her chil-dren and family income. The father, if work-ing, will not be eligible. Refugees can utilize the Work First Program and receive Medicaid only if they have dependent children. Single adults do not qualify (MHA).” A new community-based study by UC Davis researchers has found that children

with developmental disabilities in Southeast-Asian-American families face signifi cant obstacles to receiving intervention services. Barriers include lack of accurate information, language diffi culties, lack of trust and limited outreach. Entitled “Understanding Develop-mental Disabilities in Families of Southeast Asian Origin,” the study is the fi rst to ex-amine the perceptions of families of Hmong and Mien children with disabilities as well as the barriers to service. "We do not have Hmong words for all the diagnoses, no word for Down’s syndrome … someone has to take the time to help make the understanding,” one male Hmong participant said. For Mental Health Association of Central Carolinas and FNHealthAssist organization reducing health disparities in underserved and underrepresented populations, along with promoting early identifi cation and interven-tion for children with developmental dis-abilities are primary goals. “Since 1933, the Mental Health Association of Central Caro-linas (MHA) has been the voice of hope for persons affected by mental illness. Though the organization's name has changed over the years, also coverage has widened to in-clude Mecklenburg and Cabarrus Counties, our focus of advocacy and education has not altered.” Both organizations were represent-ed at the recent International Organizations Meeting, hosted each year by Charlotte In-ternational Cabinet .This open forum allows members from Charlotte's international or-ganizations to brainstorm on the issues that shape our community as a whole. “The larg-est group of refugees and aslyees in our re-gion are the Montagnards. Groups currently arriving and being resettled locally are Bhuta-nese and Burmese”, said MHA Board Mem-ber Rogina Scott-Franklin on Multicultural Advocacy in a video. At a following meeting with representative from organizations, school and university psy-chologists, practitioners and physicians, a new plan of collaboration took shape. The need is great and urgent. Many diseases can be prevent-ed if more attention is paid to the mental-wellbe-ing, depressions, anxiety and others causing dis-turbing problems, some with an tragic outcome ( as suicide). “Who is Barack Obama”- Available in All Asian Languages

In “Who is Barack Obama?” (ISBN 1475297785), Okyere Bonna creates an in-formative and easy-to-read guide that dis-cusses Barack Obama’s political career as president of the United States. He details the process that awarded Barack Obama the 2008 presidential election, while enlighten-ing readers to the man behind the politics The author visited Asian Herald and told the story behind the book, his rewarding ex-perience as educator, and personal life. Okyere Bonna is a naturalized citizen of the United States who was born in Ghana. He has earned a master’s in business and science education from the Franciscan Uni-versity of Steubenville in Ohio. His time in

Ghana included serving as an SRC Secretary and Executive Committee member of the NationalUnion of Ghana Students from 1989 through 1990. Bonna has taught students in both public and privateschool systems in North Carolina and New York, and he has been involved with many books including “Barack Obama: Road to the White House,” “American Presidents and the Making of the Presidency” and “A New Agenda for Gha-na”. He is married and has two children. The main purpose of Bonna’s book is to explain the person behind the presiden-cy. Bonna covers Obama’s international pedigree and attempts to sift through the

enormous amount of speculation and ru-mors to present an honest representation of America’s 44th president. He also compares Obama to past presidents in an attempt to answer whether or not Obama has been sin-gled out for reasons outside of the political spectrum. “My main inspiration was to create a book that would either justify or stop the allega-tions brought forth against our president,” Bonna says. “As a teacher and a citizen of our dear country, I feel it is my civic respon-sibility to educate my students by providing them with facts, not tales, when it comes to choosing our president. “Who is Barack Obama?” also discusses Obama’s successful road to the White House and the nuances of the 2008 election.Written in a simplistic tone that allows read-ers as young as a third grader to understand the material, “Who is Barack Obama?” is a sequel to Bonna’s previously released book, “Barack Obama, the Road to the White House.” Between the two titles, readers

will get to know not only the person that is Barack Obama but also the political pro-cess that allowed him to be the fi rst African American president in United States History. “Both ‘Who is Barack Obama?’ and my previous work were designed to rouse the appetite for knowledge, and let the pub-lic know the truth with regards to President Obama,” says Bonna. “Who is Barack Obama?” is available to our readers for less than $10.00 online at http://www.amazon.com/Barack-Obama-Korean-Translation-Edition; other transla-tions include Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Dutch, French and more. ■

Ace Medical Weight Loss was founded in 2006 by doctors Myo Sandar Nwe and Sandeep S Grewal, MD MSBoard Certifi ed in Internal Medicine, to serve Rock Hill, SC and the surrounding areas. The SlimPlate System was co-de-signed by both Ace Medical Weight Loss Center founders. Myo Sandar New is a design-engineer that made the Slim Plate System IPhibe app possible. The Android version is expected soon. This system is designed by weight-loss doctors, who understand why deprivation diets fail. The complete SlimPlate Sys-tem is now available in North and South Carolina. This complete system of por-tion control tools is designed so that the user never has to count calories; instead it teaches users how to portion their plates for weight loss. Now, users have the free-dom to choose their own food and their own recipes while losing weight. Dr. Myo M Nwe recently state“We’ve designed this system to be a long term weight loss solution. Unlike other diets, the SlimPlate System is intended to make sure you’re losing fat, not muscle. This four phase weight loss plan is planned to cause users to lose weight without giving up most of their favorite food, and then maintain their weight by portioning their plates in a healthy way. We’ve made this product so easy to use, by simply color coding portions of the plates for all four phases. Remember eating less is not a so-lution to lose weight, but eating right is.” - Dr. Myo M Nwe Both the SlimPlate system and the

SlimPlate iPhone app are available now. It features the SlimPlate meals tips for din-ing out and homemade meals, reminders for your meal schedule and the signature high intensity cross training exercise vid-eo. By taking a photo of what is on your plate, the information can be shared with the weight-loss doctor and to your fellow support group. They can send feedback, encouragements for proper eating habits, and congrats for each mile stone. Plus it is a free app, how cool is that! According to Myo M Nwe, MD Board Certifi ed in Internal Medicine; Board Cer-tifi ed in Bariatric Medicine, basics life style changes anyone should adopt are regular exercise, drink plenty of water, count calories consumption and limit it, avoid nervous eating and frequent snacks. At the same time it is essential to main-tain regular interval eating habits with balanced meal. Daily calorie consumption for an average person is 1600 to 2200 cal-ories depend on the one’s activity and me-tabolism. In order to reduce body weight, one should not only consume fewer calo-ries than daily requirement but also need to burn the extra storage calories in body. The habit of counting calorie consump-tion is the key to long term success of staying lean and fi t and still enjoying variety of food. Some may not be aware that limiting drinking of regular soda, cof-fee, and tea alone may shed few pounds each week. Decreasing portions of each meal, drinking a glass of water prior to any meal, replacing high calorie snacks, avoiding haste-eating habit may help limit the excessive intake of the calorie. As this is the lifetime process and one should take steps at gradual pace to avoid re-bound binge eating and excessive weight gain.Burning excess calories is another way to achieve successful weight maintenance. How do we burn calories? Any physical

activity would do it. Running, jogging, swimming, water aerobics, walking, ten-nis, etc are great. Water aerobics is great for the arthritic patient. Even daily activi-ty at home, walking upstairs, getting up to get things, working in the backyard, walk-ing in the mall etc. burn extra calories and keep you in constant active mode. Making these a habit will yield long term results. Remember adopting healthy life-style is a habit you will need for life. As Dr New explained “The weight loss efforts need a strong commitment. The support from family and friends to indi-viduals fi ghting obesity is very important. Understanding the issue, we create this

mobile app. The app will serve as a secret friend, who will be there to motivate peo-ple, every step of their weight loss efforts. It reminds them to eat regularly, at the scheduled meal times; it suggests what different food to eat, even at their favorite fast food parlor or fancy restaurant. It will guide people to enjoy food, without feel-ing guilty. The certifi ed fi tness trainer is right at your fi nger tip at your convenient time and place, it will train you to exercise, will lead you from the beginner to ad-vance and even to challenge level exer-cise. Surely it will become your pal, and I will let you choose a name for it.” ■

LET’S TALK - FINANCIAL MAKEOVERSPresented by Prudential

On March 14, Prudential presented a fi-nancial-makeover interactive event at the Asian Library. The hostess was Amira Issa, a Prudential Financial Professional Associ-ate. The evening started with wine tasting, by The Sorting Table on 7th, creating a relax-ing and unwinding atmosphere. The social-izing time gave way to conversations, while Josh, the proud owner and wine connoisseur introduced the regions from which the bot-tles came from. He also presented various types of food, and they relations with wine. Some dishes are cooked with.. , some are served with; but no matter what is the ap-proach, recipes or presentation, we always have to use a good wine …pared with the appropriate meal. To keep in mind that Ital-ian wines are made for Italian food. The two go hand in hand, and like a good mar-riage both are typically enhanced by the other. According to some wine connoisseurs, “there is no other country on earth with a wine culture like that of Italy. There are over 2000 indigenous varieties (native grapes) spread throughout this beautiful country. Each of Italy's 20 regions is home to a unique viticultural industry, from the cool climates in the northeast such as Alto

Adige and Friuli to the warm, sunny zones of the south such as Campania, Puglia and Sicily. Be it delicious whites with vibrant acidity or powerful reds that age for de-cades, Italian wines present every color in the rainbow, viticulturally speaking!”While millions of wine drinkers love Italian wines, the subject can be a bit overwhelm-ing and somewhat confusing, so most peo-ple need a guide to help them understand the difference between a Valpolicella and a Valtellina. From Sangiovese to Trebbiano and the wide viticultural variations that lie in be-tween, navigating the wine shop shelves to find an Italian wine that will complement Friday night lasagna can be a fun-filled ex-perience - if you are armed with a little Ital-ian wine knowledge. Let Josh be your guide. But when it come to finances,... turn to Amira. Within an hour she had the purpose of the evening on the table. The partici-pants, women with various background and ethnicity, had an opportunity to talk, share experiences and learn how to get the most out of their finances. From securing pro-tection for loved ones to paying for higher education to planning for retirement, this exciting event was not to be missed!

In today society, achieving financial security is one of the most important goals a woman needs pursue. Taking charge of one’s fi-nancial planning is an es-sential choice to make. As many financial plan-ners will tell “financial security is something that most women spend a lot of

time worrying about. Unfortunately, when it comes to actually investing, many women procrastinate. Perhaps overwhelmed by the alternatives, they do the simple thing: noth-ing. A woman’s need for financial security is no different from a man’s. Achieving it is another story. In the past, married women could depend upon a husband’s pension or financial ability, but today women are marrying later or not at all. Most women work and share the financial responsibility and decision making. Women tend to in-

vest more cautiously, which may mean less profitably. Fortunately, the future is looking brighter. Women recognize that investing plays a decisive role in meeting financial goals. Having knowledge and competent advisors, women are getting the help they need, growing more confident about mak-ing smart investment decisions. The good news is women are and can be very compe-tent with their finances for themselves, their children, and the charities they may sup-port. The best way to ensure that you will have the money you will need later is to start put-ting your finances in order today.” Best advice: take it slowly, learn a little bit at a time and don’t worry too much. Just start. ■

The Diversity Forum presents DandapaniThe Diversity Forum took place Thursday, March 28, at Harris Conference Center in Charlotte -CPCC Campus. Its Vision states “we believe diversity will give our nation

a competitive advantage in the new global economy where ideas, concepts, knowledge and people have become a company's most important assets.” The Mission is to provide a diversity and inclusion platform that connects business leaders through innovation. The main objectives are Workplace Diversity and Inclusion. Also, it provides innovative ideas on the recruitment, hiring, and retention of a diverse workforce. The Diversity Forum is looking to offer the best practices platform of inclusion as a mod-el for increasing individual and/or corporate leadership and development, and to deliver relevant forums by providing meaningful top-ics resulting in participation growth. It deliv-ers an environment encouraging learning. Diversity-Sustainable impact. What sustain-ability is, what its goals should be, and how these goals are to be achieved are all open to

interpretation. For many environmentalists 'sustainable development' is an oxymoron - as development seems to entail environmental degradation. A universally accepted definition of sustain-ability remains elusive because it needs to be factual and scientific, a clear statement of a specific “destination”. According to some theories, the simple definition "sustainability is improving the quality of human life while living within the carrying capacity of support-ing eco-systems", though vague, conveys the idea of sustainability having quantifiable lim-its. But sustainability is also a call to action, a task in progress or “journey” and therefore a political process, so some definitions set out common goals and values. The Earth Char-ter speaks of “a sustainable global society founded on respect for nature, universal hu-man rights, economic justice, and a culture of peace.”Just to make it more complicated, the word sustainability is applied not only to hu-man sustainability on Earth, but to many situ-ations and contexts over many scales of space

and time, from small local ones to the global balance of production and consumption. It implies responsible and proactive decision-making and innovation that minimizes nega-tive impact and maintains balance between social, environmental, and economic growth to ensure a desirable planet for all species now and in the future. It can also just refer to a future intention." So who is at the top of all diversity impact? The Diversity Forum Chairman is no other then Eric Watson, by now a familiar face to the Asian Community. His commitment to make a difference and leave a foot print to follow brought us the event at CPCC, and the speaker Dandapani. Hindu priest and meditation teacher, Danda-pani is of Sri Lankan descent. Raised in Aus-tralia, he graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Deeply inspired by his family's spiritual traditions, Dandapani had firm foun-dations upon which, at the age of twenty-three, he chose to live as a monk. Thus he followed his guru, Satguru Sivaya Subramu-

niyaswami to Kauai's Hindu Monastery in Hawaii. After being initiated as a monk by his Satguru, Dandapani studied a wide variety of Hindu teachings that focused on meditation, yoga and spiritual philosophy as keys to un-folding his own and others' deepest potential through personal self effort. In 2008, Dandapani's monastic vows expired and he chose to venture out on his own after living as a monk for ten years. Dandapani currently lives in New York City. He travels frequently, sharing the teachings of his guru in workshops and spiritual adventures in the US and around the world working with indi-viduals, groups and organizations. Dandapani recognises the ongoing, develop-mental nature of a person's spiritual journey. He creates warm, respectful and fun places of exploration and training, and offers assistance to individuals, groups and organizations in spiritual and ethical development. Dandapani commenced the 2013 year with The Diversity Forum in Charlotte. Being pre-sented with different notions of the monk-hood, meditation, and philosophy, the partici-pants were ready to research a different way of thinking, reacting, and handling situations within their business and life. Believing that these teachings are as rel-evant today as they were in ancient times, Dandapani is teaching us to understand ourselves and therefore understand others through these highly practical spiritual guide-lines. ■

Networking & Community Outreach Luncheon Presented by SEAC

March 28, Networking Luncheon with ALN & SEAC @ Enso

NAAAP, ALN (Asian Leadership Net-work), and SEAC (Southeast Asian Coali-tion) held a networking luncheon at Enso. Attendees had the opportunity to mingle, and learn about SEAC’s community out-reach efforts, and about ways to get in-volved.The National Association of Asian American Professionals is a non-profit professional or-ganization that promotes the career advance-ment and leadership development of Asian American professionals in all fields through networking, respecting Asian multicultural-ism, and supporting diversity and commu-nity service. SEAC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organiza-tion aimed at increasing community em-powerment in the growing Southeast Asian American community of the Carolinas. SEAC provides naturalization services, and conducts several service projects throughout the year. SEAC Director Cat Bao Le attend-ed the luncheon, and introduced Thanh-Thu Luong , Director of Programs, and SEAC’s intern, Polly. SEAC provide programming in three main content areas:Youth Empowerment Civic EngagementWorkforce Health and Sustainability“Our first youth donations- Thanks to our neighborhood supermarket Giant Penny, for providing our youth snacks for the next 6 months!”

“That's SEAC intern Polly presenting our youth program at UNC Charlotte ASA!” SEAC Youth Building Today!

Youth Empowerment-About The importance of youth programs is tre-mendous; Bob Meyer, a community educa-tion director stated recently in an interview “the opportunities for our area youth can be improved-Enhancing the quality of existing youth programs and increasing the number of programs available will involve all ele-ments of our community. Whether it is an artist coming into an after school program to teach kids pottery or if it is a policeman playing football with 3rd graders on the field after school, the mission is all the same: the adults in our community are connecting with the children.., and they are working to pro-vide our children with the best experience in life”. An example of this improvement would be an organization like the FN Health Assist donating school/craft supply (http://fnhealthassist.org/1/archives/09-2012/1.html; another example would be a local en-trepreneur sharing his passion of the game of soccer with high school students. The op-portunities to create a wonderful world of experiences for our youth are endless when many hands are put to the plow.

Youth/Adult Partnerships Advocates for Youth consider that “the es-sence of youth involvement is a partnership between adults and young people. Effective youth/adult partnerships work toward solv-ing community problems. Working partner-ships also acknowledge the contributions of all participants - youth and adults. In theory, creating such partnerships sounds good and makes a lot of sense, but putting such partnerships into practice is not always easy. Power dynamics, usually rooted in cul-tural norms, may make it difficult for young people and adults to feel comfortable work-

ing together. Years of formal instruction in school often teach young people to expect answers from adults. Some youth expect their own ideas to be largely ignored, derid-ed, or vetoed. Adults frequently underesti-mate the knowledge and creativity of young people. Adults are also accustomed to mak-ing decisions without input from youth, even when youth are directly affected by those decisions. Therefore, joint efforts toward solving problems can be difficult, requiring deliberate effort on the part of both adults and young people”.

Making Youth Involvement WorkOrganizations like SEAC and AY already indentified that “to make youth involve-ment work, good intentions are not enough. Adults who endorse the concept of youth/adult partnerships must be willing to iden-tify and alter the organizational environment where institutional barriers can be especially significant. Here we are few examples: Hours for Meetings and Work—some

youth organization’s hours of operation usu-ally coincide with times when young people are at school or work. To engage youth, pro-gram planners must find nontraditional times at which to hold important meetings. Of-ten, the conflict between adults' and youth's schedules can be difficult to overcome. However, compromise is necessary if an organization is to enjoy genuine youth in-volvement. For adults, this may mean hold-ing meetings in the late afternoon or evening or on weekends. For youth, this may mean using the school community service hours to attend daytime meetings.Transportation—Many young people do not have personal vehicles. So we should schedule meetings in easily accessible loca-tions and should provide travel vouchers or promptly reimburse youth for transportation costs.

Food—Few young people have the income to purchase meals in business districts or dinners in restaurants. When meetings occur at meal times, organizations should provide young people either with food or with suffi-cient funds to pay for meals. This is already in SEAC to do list; although first grocery-cart was rolling( as seen in the above pic-ture), more support in this area is needed. Organization Staff and Policies—In some organizations that have always operated from an exclusively adult perspective, staff usually needs cultural competency train-ing prior to involving youth meaningfully. Adults must accept young people's perspec-tives and ideas, and be willing to change rules to meet the needs of youth. Each adult-participant must make determined efforts to let each young person know he/she is a val-ued, contributing member of the organiza-tion. Finally, with input from both youth and adults, organizations should develop policies on youth/adult interactions. For example, if a program involves overnight travel, youth and adults should be clear about their roles and responsibilities in traveling together. Policies must respect youth and their desire for independence and, at the same time, ad-dress parental concerns about security as well as the legal liability of the organization. There are many studies on youth-develop-ment to look at, and many more to come; however, SEAC has a great foundation, and a good start. With more partnerships to come, we will keep you posted on the other projects. For more information, donations or to volunteer, feel free to contact Thanh-Thu Luong at (980) 224-3081 [email protected]; for information regarding FNHealthAs-sist, visit @ fnhealthassist.org, and leave a comment. Small business (corner-stores, groceries, restaurants and book-stores) are encouraged to take advantage of this tax-deduction opportunity. Small donations can also be received at Asian Library (ask for Roxanna),while large donations can be ac-commodated at FNHA locations, on Com-monwealth Ave. Southeast Asian Coalition mailing list is 4938 Central Avenue ,Char-lotte, NC 28205. ■

CICC(Carolina International Cultural Committee, 회장 이승현 박사)는 지난 3월 9일(토) 오후 6시, 샬롯 다운타운에 있는 메리엇 호텔에서 20여명의 회원이 모인 가운데 있었다.
