Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum is considered one of the three major dinosaur museums in the world and exhibits many valuable materials, such as complete skeletons of Fukuiraptor and other dinosaurs that were excavated in Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture. Tojimbo Cliffs fea-tures magnificent pillar-shaped rocks created over the years by sea erosion. Extending for about 1 km, the cliffs command a magnificent view of the Sea of Japan. Mikata Goko consists of five lakes and each of them is of a different nature: salt water, fresh water, or brackish. The lakes dif-fer in depth and quality and their water color fantastically changes, so they are also called “Lakes with Five Colors.”

Eihei-ji is the head temple of the Soto Sect of Buddhism, founded by Zen Master Dogen Zenji in 1244. Recently, “Castles in the sky,” which seem as if floating in the sky, have been drawing at-tention in Japan, and Echizen Ono Castle is one of them. About 600 cherry trees are lined 2 km along the banks of the Asuwa River that flows through the center of Fukui City and they create a majestic pink tunnel when at their peak.

Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins are the ruins of the castle town of the Asakura family, the lords here in the 15th century nation-at-war period. It flourished as a castle town and boasted a brilliant culture. Though burned down in the 16th century, it was excavated 400 years later and now the former streets and layout are restored.

SKIJAM Katsuyama is one of the largest ski resorts in Western Japan. You can enjoy skiing, snow-boarding, and sledding in winter, and mountain biking and paragliding from spring to autumn.

Awara Onsen, with a more than 120-year history, is home to 74 hot springs and is a popular onsen in the prefecture.

Fukui Prefecture

Fukui Prefecture is home to the Dinosaur Museum, breathtaking bluff views, and historical spots. Delicious food including seafood, traditional washi paper, and other craft products are also renowned.

Starting from Kanazawa Station, head to Higashi Chaya-gai District. This district is well known for O-chaya (geisha houses) and Geiko-san (geisha) culture. Kazue-machi is also one of the three chaya-gai districts in Kanazawa City along with the Higashi and Nishi districts. The Asano River near Kazue-machi offers a fine view of cherry blossoms in spring.

The next morning, visit Kenrokuen Garden, which opens from 7 a.m. It is one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan, along with Kairakuen (Ibaraki) and Korakuen (Okayama). Yukizuri is famous scenery of Kenrokuen in winter. It is a traditional method using ropes to prevent tree branches from breaking due to the weight of snow. Kanazawa Castle Park is the ruins of Kanazawa Castle. Rooms of Seisonkaku Villa are decorated with an elegant design that is different for each room. If you have an intellectual bent, and especially if you are interested in Zen Buddhism, be sure to visit the D. T. Suzuki Museum. The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa is a must-see spot for art lovers. Have lunch in Korinbo, the most bustling district in the city. Nagamachi is well known as a former residential area for middle-class samurai. Now you can-not meet any samurai there but it is still a good place to feel the atmosphere of olden times while you stroll past old earthen walls. Cross the Sai River, and walk around Nishi Chaya-gai District and Teramachi, a district dotted with temples.

The Noto Peninsula is home to impressive scenery with a nostalgic atmosphere, such as pic-turesque agricultural villages and dynamic natural scenery. If possible, touring by car is recom-mended. Chirihama Beach Driveway is the only road where you can drive on the beach in Japan. Wajima, a place famous for its morning market, is one of settings of NHK’s morning drama series “Mare,” which will be aired from April, 2015. In the market, there are about 250 stalls.

More than 1,000 small rice paddies are layered on the slopes facing the ocean: This is Shiroyone Senmaida rice terrace and has been added to Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS). You can learn how to make salt in the local and traditional “Agehama” method at Okunoto Salt Farm Village (Michi no Eki Suzu Endenmura road station) in Suzu. Visit Cape Suzu and then see Mitsuke Island, which looks like a battleship. Shunran no Sato near Noto Airport is a facility where you can experience hands-on agricultural activities. If you have a sweet tooth, don’t miss enjoying sweets produced by Hironobu Tsujiguchi, a renowned patissier from Ishikawa Prefecture, at Le Musée De H in Wakura Onsen.

Kiriko Matsuri features huge lanterns called kiriko, and different Kiriko events take place in many areas in the Noto Peninsula from July to October.

Awazu Onsen in Kaga has about a 1,300-year history. Yamashiro Onsen is a town with Soyu hot springs as one of the main attractions, and shopping for Kutani ware and other local prod-ucts is enjoyable. Yamanaka Onsen is located in a mountainous area and walking is enjoyable. Kakusenkei Gorge has a fine promenade and kawadoko (riverside terraces) are set up along the river from spring to autumn. Katayamazu Onsen is a resort town near Lake Shibayamagata and Mount Haku-san is beautifully seen over the lake.

The most popular food in all of Hokuriku is red snow crab in winter. A variety of seafood from the Sea of Japan is also superb, and sushi is of course delicious. Even conveyor-belt sushi shops are quality there. Toyama Prefecture is famous for kan-buri (yellowtail), shiro-ebi (white shrimp), firefly squid, and also masu-sushi (trout sushi) is a popular local food. Kanazawa has Omicho Market with about 180 shops. Kaga cuisine is traditional cuisine and oden (Japanese-style stew) is recommended in Kanazawa too. Echizen oroshi soba (buckwheat noodle) in Fukui and soba in Nagano are also must-eat dishes.

As for B-kyu gourmet (inexpensive but de-licious food), Hokuriku boasts sosu katsu-don (pork cutlet on rice with sauce) in Fukui, Toyama black ramen and Takaoka korokke (croquette) in Toyama, and others. Local sake made from fine water and rice is also good. Tea ceremony cul-ture has long flourished in Kanazawa, and one by-product is nice sweets.

Itoigawa is a production area of jade. Itoigawa Beach (also called Hisui Kaigan) is dotted with jade stones and you can look for them freely. Mount Myoko (2,454 meters) is one of “100 Top Mountains of Japan” and good for middle to advanced level climbers because of steep rocks. Mount Hiuchi (2,462 meters) is gentler and abundant in flowers. Sado Island is full of nature and has a culture different from the Japanese mainland, and hot springs and snow activities there are also recommended.

Nanohana Park in Iiyama is filled with field mustard flowers in spring. Gokaicho, or special exposi-tion, of Zenko-ji Temple in Nagano City is scheduled to take place from April 5 through May 31, 2015; it is open to the public just once in every six years. Suwa Onbashira Festival of Suwa Taisha Shrine also takes place every six years and the next festival will be held in 2016. These two festivals together represent one of the biggest and most famous events in Nagano Prefecture, so don’t miss out!

In addition, Nagano is blessed with outstanding nature, delicious food, nice hot springs, good places for snow activities, popular highland resort areas, as well as world-famous snow monkeys.

It is not well known that there are many attractive shopping centers in Tachikawa, such as ecute, LUMINE, Loft, Takashimaya, Isetan, IKEA and so on. LaLaport will also open in autumn, 2015.

FARET Tachikawa Art Works has been installed in an area which was created by the redevelopment project on the site of a former American military base in 1994, including 109 art works designed by 92 artists from 36 countries.

As Tachikawa is the stage of the popular anime works “Toaru Majutsu no Kinsho Mokuroku” (A Certain Magical Index) and “Toaru Kagaku no Denjiho” (A Certain Scientific Railgun), it is well known among an-ime fans. It is also famous as a location of the drama “Gokusen 3,” “Aibo Season 8” and others.

Tachikawa City, which is located in the west of Tokyo, is a hub city of commerce, culture, research and disaster prevention in the Tama area. Besides a rich nat-ural environment, there are many modern facilities in Tachikawa, such as a monorail and office buildings, which make Tachikawa look like a futurist city. It is even famous as a setting of anime works and dramas in recent years. It is a good choice to visit Tachikawa as it is not so far from central Tokyo.

Tachikawa was once called “the city of the base.” Tachikawa Yataimura Paradise, which replicates a vibrant scene of post-war reconstruction of 1950s, has a mixed atmosphere of Japan and America. Restaurants here give people a feeling of nostalgia for that period of time.

Tachikawa Keirinjyo (Tachikawa Velodrome) is known as the birth-place of Keirin Grand Prize. Most of the major Keirin bicycle races are held here.

Various kinds of vegetation are planted in Showa Commemorative National Government Park and you can enjoy different beautiful scenes of four seasons. Winter Vista Illumination is held in the park from early December to December 25 every year. On Christmas Eve, fireworks are launched.

In Polar Science Museum you will have many interesting experiences, such as solving the mystery of an aurora, taking photos of penguins, touching the ice from Antarctica, and so on.

In Tachikawa Life Safety Learning Center, in addition to the shaking of an earthquake, you can also experience smoke, fire extinguishing and first aid. In the Disaster Education Mini Theater you can also experience a realistic situation when an earthquake occurs.

Ramen Square is a theme park of ramen noodles. One of the attractions is a cluster of seven ramen shops in a space representing the town of Manhattan in New York.

Tachikawa Manga Park is a facility that contains old and new com-ics in different genres. The current collection consists of about 30,000 volumes and it is expected to increase to about 50,000 volumes in the future. Events related to comics and anime works are held regularly.

Nabeyakiudon(Udon noodles served in broth in a hot pot(nabe))Ingredients (serves 2)2 servings of udon noodles 1-cm piece of carrot 2 bunches of spinach 100 g chicken thigh meat1 chikuwa (tube-shaped fish

paste cake)

2 kuruma-bu (wheel-shaped gluten cakes)

2 eggs

udon soup1/3 cup soy sauce

1/4 cup mirin (sweet cooking sake) 3 cups dashi soup 1 10-cm square piece of kelp a handful of dried bonito 5 cups water

Cooking directions:

Tips- It is also delicious with kamaboko (minced and steamed fish cake), and satsumaage (fried fish balls).- If you have a cold, add plenty of chopped green onion to warm your body.- If mirin is not available, substitute with 1/4 cup sake with a little sugar.

Basic Japanese Home CookingLet’s learn from a veteran Japanese housewife!

Japanese Liquid Measures: 1 cup = 200 ml = 6.76 fl oz 1 tablespoon = 15 ml = 0.5 fl oz1 teaspoon = 5 ml = 0.16 fl oz high heat medium

heatlow heat

For more recipes, go to http://www.att-japan.net/en/recipe/

Instructor: Kazuko KarasawaI learned cooking from my parents, who ran a Japanese restaurant, and my grandmother, who lived to be 100 years old. As a housewife, I’ve been cooking for 20 years. I like cooking everyday, taking care of my family’s health.

A perfect dish in winter.A variety of hearty ingredients will warm your body.

Enjoy it while it is hot.

I am glad I learned an-other recipe from our teacher! Keeping warm in winter is important so I will try to make many hot and healthy meals like this.(Jill from the UK)

Make dashi using the kelp and dried bonito.

Cut the piece of carrot

into 5-mm rounds.

And shape each round using

a vegetable/cook-ie cutter.

Soak the udon in hot water for a few seconds.

Drain and then place in a nabe pot.

Boil the spinach root first.

Simmer the mirin.

Cool in water and drain well.

Add the other ingre-

dients on top of the udon.

Cut the kuruma-bu

and place on the top last.

Cover and cook over a

medium heat.

When the soup has boiled, add the egg,

cover, and cook to your favor-ite level of doneness. Serve

steaming hot.

Fill the pot a little more than 3/4 full with udon soup.

Cut the chikuwa

diagonally.Cut the

chicken thigh into bite-sized

pieces.

Cut into 3-cm long pieces.

Carrots are hard and if you want

to shape it well, you can press down firmly just

above the carrot.

Add the soup and soy sauce and bring to a quick boil.

I did it successfully!

Dampen the inside of

the pot before adding the

udon.

The excellent cultural properties not normally available are open to public viewing exclusively Jan. 10 to Mar. 18, 2015 as usual as every winter. As schedule of some temples is different, check be-

Rail

Japan is covered in a rail network that reaches to almost every corner of the archipelago. Most are owned and run by the Japan Railway (JR) system and the world famous “Shinkansen” bullet train is of course one of the fastest and most enjoyable forms of land transport anywhere – the distance between Tokyo and Osaka being covered in just 2hrs 30 mins on the fastest line.

到達,主要有JR(Japan Railway Co., Ltd., 日本旅客鐵路 )運行著,在這當中藉由世界上也很有名的「新幹線」之移動,一定會是

Japan Rail PassJapan Rail Pass allows you to use the whole JR system (includ-ing the Shinkansen) but is only sold outside Japan. 29,110 yen gets you a full 7 day ticket (adults).

For more info, check the Japan Rail Pass website:詳情請看 JAPAN RAIL PASS的網站 www.japanrailpass.net

Bus 巴士 Long-distance buses in Japan are run by numerous companies including JR. Buses are generally more economic than traveling by plane or train but do take longer and can be affected by traf-fic jams at busy times of the day or night.Local buses run all over Japan as well as in the major cities and sometimes English instructions or stop announcements are used but this is not the case everywhere. We would recommend you ask drivers to remind you of where you must disembark prior to setting off.

Taxis 計程車

Japanese taxis can be found at the exit to every train station in the country or alternatively hailed on the streets. The red sign visible through the windshield of the car: “空車” (kusha) means it is vacant and available for hire but when the sign reads “賃走” (chinso), it is unavailable. The back door on the left side will open and close automatically so be careful not to stand too close! (All the other doors are operated manually) Rates vary depending on the taxi company but usually start at a fixed rate of 730 yen (in Tokyo) for the first two kilometers. The rate sys-tem is shown inside the taxi and receipts can be issued. In urban areas, you can usually pay by credit card for a taxi. If credit cards are accepted, a taxi has a sticker showing this on the window.

Getting Around in Tokyo /

In big cities, such as Tokyo and Osaka, the under and over ground train system is well organized and highly efficient ac-cessing any and all parts of the cities. To avoid wasting time lining up for tickets and working out how to use the machines in different stations, it is highly recommended to purchase pre-paid cards.

Transportation Cards/Useful Tickets

If planning to stay in Japan for a longer period why not try using IC cards? (500 yen deposit returned when returning the card) Simply touch the card on a rectangular pad beside the ticket gate and the fare used is automatically deducted from the value of the card. In Tokyo the cards are known as Suica or PASMO and are accepted on JR lines, subways and most other railways and buses.

Valid for three days, the pass is good for unlim-ited rides using reserved seats on ordinary cars on Shinkansen (bullet trains), limited express and other trains.

You can cash traveler’s checks at many banks. Traveler’s checks can also be used at hotels, ryokan Japanese style hotels, and shops in big cities. Credit cards can be widely used in urban ar-eas, but sometimes are not accepted at shops in rural areas.

Telephone Service / 電話

Public telephones can be found almost everywhere in Japan and most can be used to make domestic and international calls. Only 10 or 100 yen coins can be used but all telephones take pre-paid telephone cards – purchase in convenience stores for 500 or 1,000 yen.If you use a calling card when you make an international call, it can reduce your calling rate.
