The Prince of Wales Hotel on Shamrock Street in Blackall is undergoing big changes with substantial renovations, a new lessee and a new manager. The freehold is also currently under contract. Longreach publican Roly Gooding officially took over the hotel lease at the beginning of October from previous lessee and owner of the Barcoo Hotel Geoff Pohlner, and is set to take over ownership of the Prince from the McGrath Family in the near future. Landmark real estate agent Robert Picking says that the sale will be a positive move for Blackall. “This will create some healthy competition in town which is a great thing.” The hotel is not Mr Gooding’s first business venture in Blackall. He ran the Tattersalls Hotel from 1980 to 1983. Mr Gooding says that he currently works 24 hours a day at his Commercial Hotel in Longreach and also owns another pub in Bouldercombe. “I first had a look at the (Prince of Wales Hotel) in Blackall midway through last year and it was a complicated decision process but we decided to go for it,” Mr Gooding said. “It will be a great challenge.” Blackall residents Neville and Debbie Dolinski have taken over the management of the hotel. “It needs a really good tidy up and a good manager to take it on. I really believe that Nev is the man for the job,” Mr Gooding said. Mr Dolinski says that they are looking forward to the challenge of changing the Prince of Wales into a friendly, quality pub for Blackall with a good atmosphere. He started his business Outback Sound in 1982, providing a range of entertainment and lighting to the central west. “I built it from scratch because it is something that I have always wanted to do.” Having spent 26 years working on the railway and four years with the Blackall-Tambo Regional Council, Mr Dolinski says that he was ready for a different challenge. FROM THE MAYOR’S DESKWell it RAINED! It is still looking

promising!! Hopefully there is a bit more on the way. Fortunately we have missed the dust thus far, which has been to the west and north of us. We have clouds in the sky; the wind is in the north ……time to say our prayers!

It was a beautiful ceremony and wonderful afternoon tea at St Joseph’s to mark Breast Cancer awareness week, as well as supporting local women survivors in our community. Lots and lots of pink apparel to please the eye and the delicious afternoon tea featured delightfully decorated cup cakes as well as all things yummy including “really-good-for-you fruit”.

While I was at St Joseph’s, Principal Tim Franzmann took me on a tour of the grounds explaining the upgrade to the sporting oval made possible through the Federal Government’s funding of the indoor sports complex, for which the school body had been raising funds. Those funds are now being spent on the much-needed oval. The Blackall Tambo Regional Council Water and Sewerage team is working in consultation with the Principal to supply the necessary fittings, connections and meters to ensure an adequate water supply for the oval as the grass plots are laid. The meters are for monitoring purposes only.

Blackall Tambo Regional Council senior staff have been engaged in preparation workshops for the process of asset management. This is a requirement of the Queensland State Government and will apply to every facet of the business of Councils statewide. The timelines drawn up by the State Government, together with the complexity and scope of the issue, certainly mean we have to make a start on this process now!

I have a further meeting with the Minister for Transport and Main Roads the Hon Rachael Nolan MP on Sunday, November 1, in regard to the imposition of the loss of the Wednesday flight into Blackall.

I am looking forward to the Q150 Shed which will be in Blackall on November 6 and 7. THIS IS A FREE SHOW. There are a variety of fabulous acts from Raw Metal Dance Company, En Garde! Blue Grass, Country and Flamenco guitar extravaganza, Shenzo Gregorio, Golden Fiddle winner for 2007 and his electric Stunt Orchestra, together with our own Damien and Dylan Dolinski, Alison Mobbs and the Blackall Community Choir. The “Where We’re From” banners will be on display at the Q150 Shed for all to see.

There are workshops available with the Raw Dance Company. Visit www.q150.qld.gov.au to register for the workshops. I am sure we have some budding dancers in our communities of Blackall and Tambo. Commencing at 3.30pm this is an opportunity NOT TO BE MISSED…. see you there!!

The ABBA concert at the Blackall Cultural Centre on Tuesday night was a great night; such fun with everyone participating in the singing and dancing! Congratulations to the Blackall Tambo Regional Council, Blackall office staff, for their organization of this event. I know everyone had a terrific time!!!

KIDS CORNER with Eddie EmuG’day kids. Wasn’t the rain delightful? It has made everything feel fresh and

clean, including my feathers, which were all dusty and dirty from all the dust storms we have had over the last few months. Now they are all fluffy and clean

again, but for how long I wonder! Have a scary Halloween Saturday night.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Council but a career change is something that you may like or you may not and we’re giving it a go.”

Major renovations have been taking place behind the closed doors of the hotel since early October.

“The best thing that we can do while the doors are closed is give the place a revamp,” Mr Dolinski said.

“We are focusing on the bar and bottleshop, with a plan to revamp the beer garden, kitchen and accommodation facilities in the future.”

Mr Gooding says that amongst other things there will be a new bar area, a new ceiling and new shelving in the bottleshop.

They hope to open for business in mid to late November. The hotel will be opening for regular hours, including until midnight on the weekends.

Tambo hosts Melbourne Cup dinner

Tambo Race Club president Richard Sanderson gets to hold the Melbourne Cup under the watchful eye of VRC personnel Lauren Zammit and Andrew Lemon

Tambo has been lucky enough see the Melbourne Cup twice over the years.

People who worked on Lansdowne in the 1970s recall seeing either the Cup itself or one of the replicas made for the winning connections.

The manager of Lansdowne at the time, Murray Leeds was the son of winning owner Gordon Leeds of Trangie, New South Wales.

Gordon won the Cup with his horse Russia in 1946 in a sterling effort, being the top weight, winning by five lengths and equalling the race record.

He was ridden by Darby Munro, the doyen of Australian jockeys at the time, and legend has it that Munro had partied long into the night before and was hung over.

It seems likely that Mr Leeds’ trophy made its way up to his son Murray at Tambo where it was shown around.

Tambo’s other connection with the Cup took place two years earlier, in 1944, when Richard Turnbull, who owned Lansdowne at the time, won the Melbourne Cup with Sirius.

This gave Turnbull the distinction of being the first incumbent Victorian Racing Club president to hold the trophy, although being wartime, no trophy was presented.

Mr Turnbull received war bonds instead, which he donated to charity.

Members of the Turnbull family still live in the Tambo district today.

An earlier Cup visit to Tambo

didn’t qualify. He went to trackwork the

following morning in a despondent mood which wasn’t lifted when his trainer, Bart Cummings offered him the ride on Rogan Josh.

“I thought it was a case of soaking up the experience – I didn’t think Rogan Josh had a fantastic chance,” John said.

“Then I rode him to win in the McKinnon Stakes and there was suddenly a shining light.”

He said he couldn’t put the feeling of winning into words.

A phantom race call was held during dinner, won by Rising Fast, who was owned for the night by Don Blinco.

Phar Lap (Stan Johnson) was second and Sirius (Angus Ryrie) came in third.

A racing theme was the dress code for the evening and the Fashions of the Field were won by Ken Creevey and Stacey Ryrie.

Blackall-Tambo Regional Council’s Rural Lands officers Phillip Hayward and Kelvin Hafey have been working in conjunction with the Weedbusters spraying contractors from Charleville to eradicate the invasive weed, Mother of Millions from the Blackall and Tambo town commons.

The eradication of the weed has been an ongoing project for Council. Council has identified it as a major issue in the Corporate Plan, Operational Plan and the Pest Management Plan.

Council has allowed budgetary allocations to specifically eradicate the weed including the work of the two Rural Lands officers and m a c h i n e r y being utilized by the ongoing p r o g r a m s . F u n d i n g from Desert C h a n n e l s Queensland has also a s s i s t e d Council in meeting their targets.

M o t h e r of Millions, Bryophyllum delagoense,

is a native plant of Madagascar which, due to its succulent easy-growing nature and coral pink flowers, became a popular garden plant in inland Australia. The plant’s ability to reproduce in large numbers and withstand drought has seen it escape from gardens and become a serious problem in many rural areas such as the Blackall-Tambo region.

Mother of Millions, particularly the flowers, is highly toxic to stock.

For further information regarding weed eradication contact your local Rural Lands officers on 4621 6600.
