Train instead of Treat.(Only the licensed fields treat, biofeedback signals train/retrain responses.)

Programs in place of Therapies. (Some States interprettherapy as referring only to standard medical, psychological or

    Stress Defined

The term "stress" was first used by theendocrinologist Hans Selye in the 1930s toidentify physiological responses in laboratoryanimals.

He later broadened and popularized the conceptto include the perceptions and responses ofhumans trying to adapt to the challenges ofeveryday life.

In Selye's terminology, "stress" refers to thereaction of the organism, and "stressor" to theperceived threat.

Stress in certain circumstances may beexperienced positively.

Eustress, for example, can be an adaptiveresponse prompting the activation ofinternal resources to meet challenges andachieve goals.

Self Regulatory ResponseHealthy and Unhealthy Stress

    Organisms have self regulatory responses

    Move towards nutrients (stress managingsupports)

Move away from toxins (stressors that disruptself regulation)

    Healthy Stressors sustain homeostatis

    Unhealthy stressors sustain homeostasis

    We react to any stress

    Stress is

    1. Perceived by an organism

    2. Evaluated for response action (e.g. re-activityresponse in SCIO/ resonance)

    3. Discriminated into an action

    a. A healthy/ life sustaining/positive responseresponse:

    i. e.g. to love

ii. e.g. to a nutrientb. A negative response to a disturbing stress

    i. e.g. a loud noise>> move away etc.

ii. e.g. activate a system response (e.g. imune system)

Healthy & Unhealthy StressWHY is this important?

    Unhealthy stressors always create a

response> a debilitating one that takes usaway from homeostasis

    This shows electromagnetically

e.g. in an electrocardiogram/ brain wavemeasurements

Similarly more subtle cell/organ signalsbecome altered by unhealthy stressors

    Rebalancing stress distorted patterns

    There are various possibilities including

    1. Offer a complete balancing pattern back> reinforce thepositive stress pattern response. This can overwritethe faulty pattern (like a long restorative holiday)>requires a resonant coupling (it must be the right styleof holiday)

    2. Reduce the disruptive effect of the stressor bycancelling/removing its signature (IF there is enough

cell vitality and inter cell support) > a short holidayaway from the stressors can be enough (and of coursereduce/eliminate subsequent exposure)

    Acute and Chronic Stress

Stress is your body's reaction to theconstant demands of the world

Stressors are events or conditions in yoursurroundings which may trigger stress.

Two main types of stress that people arefaced with are:

    Acute (immediate)

Chronic (low level/subtle and often ongoing)

Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008 25

    Acute stress

Also known as the fight-or-flight response,is your body's immediate reaction to athreat, challenge or scare.

The acute stress response is immediate, itis intense, and in certain circumstances, itcan be thrilling.

Examples of stressors that may cause anacute stress response are a job interview,a fender bender or an exhilarating ski run.

    Chronic stress- THE WORST

Results from long-term exposure to acutestress.

The chronic stress response is much moresubtle than the acute stress response, butthe effects may be longer lasting and moreproblematic.

    Daily Life Chronic stressors

The stressors which may lead to chronicstress are the nagging, day-to-day lifesituations that often seem unrelenting.

Think> relationship problems, workdifficulties and financial woes.

    Tangible Chronic stressors

The stressors which may lead to chronic stressare the nagging, day-to-day toxic stressors thatcreate an unhealthy response (foods, chemicals, electro pollution)

Unhealthy stress creates a load and moves theorganism away from healthy living processes: itdebilitates.

The debilitation process shows in anelectromagnetic disturbance at the heart of life-the cells (more later on this)

Excessive, prolonged stress may contribute to a widerange of other mental health problems such as anxietyand depression. Stress may also contribute to physicalhealth problems such as:

    asthma,

    rheumatoid arthritis,

    thyroid over-activity, ulcerative colitis, and

    persistent skin damage from scratching.

    Neuro-chemistry andPhysiology

The neurochemistry of the general adaptationsyndrome is now believed to be well understood,

although much remains to be discovered abouthow this system interacts with others in the brainand elsewhere in the body.

The body reacts to stress first by releasing the

catecholamine hormones, epinephrine andnorepinephrine, and the glucocorticoidhormones, cortisol and cortisone.

The hypothalamus- pituitary -adrenal axis (HPA)is a major part of the neuron-endocrine system,

involving the interactions of the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, and the adrenal glands.

The HPA axis is believed to play a primary rolein the bodys reactions to stress by balancing

hormone releases from the adrenaline-producing adrenal medulla, and from thecorticosteroids-producing adrenal cortex.

response to stress, if constantly activated, may make you more vulnerable to life-threatening health problems.

    Biofeedback Definitions

According to FDA 21CFR 882.5050, abiofeedback device is an instrument that

provides a visual or auditory signal

corresponding to the status of one or moreof a clients physiological parameters (e.g.,

brain alpha wave activity, muscle activity,

skin temperature, etc.) so that the clientcan control voluntarily these physiologicalparameters.

    Biofeedback Definitions

Biofeedback Certification Institute of America, biofeedback refers to providing information (feedback)for biological activity. Biofeedback is a group ofprocedures for learning control over physiological

responses with the help of electronic instruments and theservices of a certified biofeedback professional

Biofeedback is a complementary approach often usedwith other therapeutic procedures to enhance health ingeneral ways, for example, to achieve deep muscle

relaxation to counter stress reactions; or in specificways, for example, to strengthen muscles in order totreat incontinence.

    Conventional Biofeedback

Biofeedback operates on the belief that it ispossible to learn to control ones brain statesfrom within.

Biofeedback trains the brain to modulate its level

of activity, to become more or less activatedaccording to the needs of the individual.A reaction of stress typically involves brain over-

    activation.

Through biofeedback, individuals can learn toteach their brain to quiet down; to become lessactivated.

    Biofeedback- the Process

Biofeedback is used in our daily life to monitorand correct(like the sensation (imbalance) of thirst stimulates us to

take the rebalancing action of drinking )

Biofeedback connects clients with what is goingon inside their bodies.

It first creates an awareness of imbalances

Often when this happens the body automaticallybegins to readjust (if there is goodvitality/communication)

    Conventional Biofeedback- the Process

This seems a very deliberate/active process toaccess deeper disturbed stress responseprocesses- e.g. temperature control gonewrong.

Making deliberate actions for inner changeoften requires 10-30 conventional biofeedbacksessions.

    WHY?

It seems hard to change the deeper/automaticprocess by deliberate action

AND Clinical evidence indicates that direct retraining of

imbalanced stress response patterns to correct onesprovides:

    1. A healthier and more resilient stress response2. A more well person!

    Assessing Stress

If we know the imbalance- if it is obvious-then we can choose a stressreduction/rebalancing approach (e.g. I am

tired so I know I need to sleep) Often the stressors and their effects are

quite subtle- we arent aware of them- so

we dont know what to do. We need to do a subtle test

The accuracy of reactance (response to active issues) hasbeen measured and found to be accurate to perhaps 75-80% levels.

But never accurate enough for us to make full claims for
