檢查。然而忽視身體發出的警訊可是會讓自己身處危險之中。

衛生署的數據顯示癌症已連續廿七年名列台灣的主要死

因，占死亡人數的 27.3%。名單上的第二、三位則是心臟血管疾病和腦血管疾病。新光健檢中心的資料顯示，肺癌及

大（結）腸直腸癌乃最大威脅，而肺癌蟬連癌症死因之首已

四年之久。同時，罹患腸癌的案例亦在增加中，西式速食文

化、防腐劑以及殺蟲劑被列為致病因子。即使卅歲以下的人

也無法擺脫罹患腸癌的風險。

Good evening and a warm welcome to everyone. They say time flies when you’re having fun.

I hope the last 12 months haven’t gone by too slowly and that this speech won’t either. It’s always

difficult to know how to start these things. A friend once told me that a good speech should last as

long as it takes for people to finish their drinks. As your glasses seem to be full all the time, we could

be here for quite a while!

Martin Luther King famously remarked, “The true measure of a man is not how he behaves in

moments of comfort and convenience but how he stands at times of controversy and challenges.”

With the downturn, we’ve seen some big challenges this past year at ThatsLife, but I’d like to think

we’ve overcome the obstacles1 in our path through determination, innovation, and a good deal of

perspiration!2

What with the initial programming glitches,3 the launch of our new Multi-Mart interface started a

little shakily, but those teething troubles seem dim and distant now. Multi-Mart is a unique function

that allows residents to order directly from local businesses, and it sets us apart from other social-

networking applications. I’m proud of it. You should be, too.

“Success is a journey, not a destination,” observed the late Ben Sweetland. I hope it’s a journey

we at ThatsLife will continue together. Along the way, the road may become rocky, the traveler weary,

but there’s always a fellow hiker willing to offer a glass of water. Despite our achievements over the last

year, now is no time to rest on our laurels.4 Come Monday morning, I’ll be cracking the whip5 again.

But for now, fill your glasses and let’s drink to a happy and prosperous New Year. Cheers, all.

First things first: I’d like to address these unfounded4

rumors regarding me retiring. You are not as lucky as that yet,

folks! Yesterday, as I was chatting with my lovely PA, Janet,

I told her how lucky she was to have a boss like me. “They

loved me so much at my last post5 that I got a silver cutlery

set when I left,” I pointed out. “Is that it?” she replied. “I’ll give

you a solid-gold6 dinner service if you’ll leave now.” She was

joking . . . I think.

But I’m not here to bore you stiff with my anecdotes.7 No,

I’ll wait until we’re back at work to do that. What I really want

to say is thanks to you all for making 2009 such a special

year for Hernham-Wragg. There are some old faces out there

tonight — no offence, accounting department — and several

new ones, but I’d like to think we’re all one big, generally

happy family.

That most respected of books, the Bible, calls on us to

work hard but also to “eat, drink and be merry” once in a

while. So without further ado,8 may I propose a toast to a

joyful 2010. Happy New Year, everyone!

The financier J.P. Morgan stated, “The first step towards

getting somewhere is to decide that you are not going to

stay where you are.” With this in mind, I’d like to thank you all

for taking the time out of your busy schedule to attend this

later, Morgan’s remarks are more relevant than ever in an age

of ever-changing technology.

As you know, we’ve been planning for some time to

launch a new policy department that will incorporate2 the

PR wing of our operations. I’m pleased to announce this will

Browne, will head it up.3 Joe has nearly 10 years experience

handling some of our biggest clients, including most recently

the TotalSport portfolio.4 So I’m sure you’ll agree we’ll be in

capable hands.

“Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s

end,” said the Roman statesman Seneca. I beg to disagree. The

launch of this new department is not so much a fresh start as

a continuation of an evolving strategy. On that note, I’d like to

TWO: Figure out where you

will get the money to repay

your debts. It’s important that

to pay off another. Borrowing

money from another source

is one option, but it is not

method is to use your own
