JAMEY THOMAS
M
et 2012 agter die rug, voorspel
kenners van die Boland-eien-
domsmark n gesonde huismark
met beter vooruitsigte vir die jaar wat
voorl.
Volgens Pieter Kotz van RE/MAX Helder-
berg, verwag hulle weens lae rentekoerse en
taamlik billike pryse n goeie jaar. Sedert
Vir 2013gloonsdiemarksalgeleidelikmet
n effense herstel begin, maar sal steeds baie
lewendig wees soos in 2012, s Kotz.
Amatola vanNiekerk vanEngel enVlkers
in die Strand s soos nuwe ontwikkelings in
die Helderberg bekend gestel word, behoort
hullegroei indiehuismark en ngroteromset
as in 2012 te sien.
Volgens Kevin Wearing van Leapfrog Gor-
donsbaai, sal die eiendomsmark in di dorp
om verskeie redes verbeter. Hy s die pryse
van eiendomme in die omgewing is taamlik
stabiel en verkopersmaak voorsiening vir la-
er aanbiedinge wat wissel van 5% tot sowat
12% van die vra-prys.
Die beskikbaarheid van finansies is besig
omstadigmaar seker te verbeter endit stimu-
leer ook ons mark, reken Wearing.
Die huidige opgradering van Gordons-
baai, soos die nuwe Woolworths-inkopiesen-
trum, die aktiewe en suksesvolle buurtwag
wat onlangs gestig is, die positiewe bydraes
van die Gordonsbaai Sakeforum en ook die
aktiewe bemarking en blootstelling van Gor-
donsbaai om buitelanders, toeriste sowel as
kopers van elders in Suid-Afrika te lok, dra
daartoe by dat dit ook n goeie huismark is.
DroeksMalan van Seeff Stellenbosch s die
mark in Stellenboschwas verlede jaar oor die
algemeen baie aktief. Veral die mark vir klei-
ner huise tussen R1 miljoen en R2, 5 miljoen
in sekuriteitskomplekse soos Welgevonden-
landgoed, was besonder besig in 2012 en di
eiendommese gemiddelde pryshetmet sowat
9% gegroei. Huise in gevestigde woonbuurte
se pryse het meesal dieselfde gebly as in 2011
en so ook woonstelle.
Ek verwag nie enige noemenswaardige
groei in die gevestigde woonbuurte nie, maar
voorsienweldatdie intreevlak-eiendommein
Welgevonden wel met n verdere 5 8% van-
jaar sal groei. Die res van diemark salmoont-
lik sywaarts beweeg, s Malan.
niegoubo-normalegroeisiennie,sJoubert.
Volgens Surina du Toit, takbestuurder van
Pam Golding Paarl/Wellington/Fransch-
hoek, het hulle in 2012 baie meer transaksies
as in 2011 gehad en ervaar hulle dat kopers
steeds waarde vir geld soek. Pam Golding Ei-
endomme voorspel egter dat die mark baie
dieselfde in 2013 sal wees.
Verkrygingvanverbandeblysteeds npro-
bleem en eiendomme wat teen die regte prys
in die mark kom, verkoop relatief vinnig,
maar eiendomme wat oorprys is bly lank in
die mark, s Du Toit.

Moving house requiresmore than just packing boxes
While packing and unpacking boxes may be
a largepart ofmovinghomes, it is not the only
aspect thatnewhomeownersneed to consider
when changing their address, says Adrian
Goslett, CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa.
There may also be some legal matters that
will need to be attended to before the move.
Whereanewhomebuyerwaspreviouslyrent-
ing and is leaving before the lease agreement
has expired, they should read through their
contract to see whether they will be able to
transfer the agreement to another tenant or
sub-let thehomeuntil the termof the contract
ends, says Goslett.
There are a number of legal and technical
detailsbuyersneed tokeep inmindwhenthey
aremoving.Heofferssomeadviceandaspects
for new homebuyers to consider:
)Ensure you are covered for the move:
According to Goslett, it is important that
when the homebuyer makes arrangements
with a moving company that they check that
any mishaps are covered by insurance. The
homebuyer should carefully review the con-
tract with the moving company to see what
falls under their insurance coverage during
the move and what doesnt. The moving com-
pany will provide some insurance, but in
some cases itmight beworthwhile to take out
additional coverage.
)Send change of address to the relevant
parties: The new address should be sent to
all creditors and changed on bank accounts
so that the homebuyer does notmiss any pay-
ments or important notices that could affect
their credit record in the future. The home-
buyer should also ask the post office to for-
ward all post to the newaddress. The change
ofaddress shouldalsobesent toanypublicati-
ons that the homebuyer has subscriptions
with, and to family and friends, saysGoslett.
) Disconnect utilities: Disconnect utili-
ties or services that are no longer required
or transfer them to the new address. These
would include items such as water and elec-
tricity services, newspaper delivery, a tele-
phone landline, DSTV subscription or a pri-
vate securitycompany.Theremaybedeposits
that can be refunded from the various service
providers. Goslett notes that homebuyers
should also advise service providerswhere fi-
nal bills are to be sent.
)Obtain all the necessary records: Gos-
lett says that obtaining all records is particu-
larly important if the buyer is relocating to
a home in another city or area. These include
medical records and medical prescriptions
should be refilled or transferred to a pharma-
cy in the buyers newarea. For family buyers,
school records such as copies of report cards
and transfer cards will need to be collected.
Otherrecordswould includebirthdocuments
for all familymembers and any legal records.
Although moving can be a rather tedious
exercise, if thehomebuyerhasachecklist and
systematicallydealswithall thenecessaryas-
pects involved it will be a far more managea-
ble experience, Goslett concludes.

Top 10 reasons for choosingwoodenwindows
Wooden windows are a great architectural
detail in anybuilding. However, it is not only
aesthetic reasons that make them an opti-
mumchoice, there are anumber of other rea-
sons too. Charl Jacobz, from Swartland
Wooden Windows and Doors, offers the top
10 reasons why wooden windows should be
the windows of choice for any new building
or renovation project:
)Wooden windows are beautiful: The
rich grain and organic texture of solid wood
make beautifully crafted wooden windows
an aesthetically beautiful addition to any
home or building. Says Charl: There is no
argument that wooden windows add an ele-
ment of visual beauty to any architectural
design they grace a fact that makes them
the first choice for discerning architects,
builders and homeowners the world over.
Wood, if skilfully crafted, has a stunning or-
ganic quality for unrivalled aesthetic ap-
peal.
)Woodenwindows come in a variety of
styles: It is important that the style of the
windowyouchoosepairswellwith the archi-
tectural style of your home, explains Charl:
For a good-looking architectural elevation,
the style of windows you choose must com-
plement the overall design of your home.
This is where wooden windows offer a real
benefit, as they are available in a plethora
of various styles and designs to suit almost
any architectural design, from themost con-
temporary to the very traditional.
SwartlandWoodenWindowsandDoors for
example, offers wooden windows in the fol-
lowing styles: sliding sash windows, mock
sash windows, horizontal gliding windows,
full pane windows, small pane windows and
top-hung windows.
) Wooden windows are made to suit
specific climates: It is important to choose
materials that suit the specific climate you
are living in, says Charl: Swartland makes
its wooden windows for example, fromwood
that has been specially kiln-dried in their
own kilns to ensure that they boast an 8%
moisture content, which is themost suitable
for the South African climate.
)Woodenwindows aremade from sus-
tainable material: In general, wood has a
much smaller carbon footprint than other
materials used to construct windows, mak-
ing it the ideal environmentally-friendly
choice, saysCharl: Whencomparedtoasim-
ilar typeofwindowmade fromwood, itwould
take 4,41 times the amount of energy tomake
it out of UPVC, 6,34 times the amount of ener-
gy tomakeitoutofaluminium,and11,7 times
the amount of energy to make it out of steel.
Also, unlike plastic, concrete, steel or alu-
minium, wood is a sustainable material and
a renewable source.
) Wooden windows are long-lasting
and durable: If well maintained, Charl says
wooden windows can last for decades: De-
velopments in timberwindowdesignand fin-
ishing productsmean thatmodern, high per-
formance timber windows need minimal
maintenance. When sealed with the correct
products they potentially have a significant-
ly longer lifespan when compared to other
substrates. He says that in general, there is
no reason why wood shouldnt last for over
50to100years,andevenafter that time,wood-
enwindowframescanoftenberenovatedand
restored, whereas this is not always possible
with other substrates.
)Wooden windows boast excellent in-
sulation qualities: Wood is an extremely
efficient insulator, says Charl, He referred
to Swartlands wooden windows which fare
exceptionally well in the market. Recent in-
dependent tests conducted by the SouthAfri-
can Fenestration and Insulating Energy Rat-
ing Association (SAFIERA) on one of their
woodenwindowsshowedthat ithadthe low-
est tested U-rating of all tested windows in
South Africa.
) Wooden windows are now available
with double-glazing: Double-glazing and
insulationcaneasilyreduce theenergyspent
on regulating the temperature in your home
by as much as 50%. However, wooden win-
dowswere not always available with double-
glazing but now they are, as in the case of
Swartlands range of double-glazed wooden
windows.
) Wooden windows are now easy to
maintain: Beauty aside, many consumers
were weary of wooden windows as they re-
quired a lot of maintenance to keep them
looking good. However, since water-based
sealants have been introduced to themarket,
maintaining your wooden windows is quick
and easy. Charl explains: If you can wash
and wipe a window your maintenance is
done.
Water-based sealants are very durable, de-
signed to withstand even the harshest cli-
mates, they are very easy to apply, and they
are comparatively very quick-drying. A wa-
ter-based sealant, for example canwithstand
temperature fluctuations, it make the wood
heat-reflective (in darker colours) and fun-
gus-resistant, it prolongs the longevity of the
wood, and it is touch-drywithin amere three
hours.He says that Swartlandhas amainte-
nance kit with which you can quickly and
easily keep your wooden windows looking
great for longer nomore sanding is needed.
) Wooden windows can come pre-
sealed and preglazed: With Swartlands
new Ready 2 Fit range, wooden windows are
nowavailable 100%complete, pre-sealed and
pre-glazed, so that they will require no fur-
ther treatment once installed. This new
range compriseswoodenwindows and doors
that are pre-sealed as they are finished being
manufactured. The glazing is then installed
before they leave the factory, so when they
arrive on-site, they are ready to be installed,
with no further labour required to seal and
glaze them. This not only saves the builder
and homeowner time and money, but it also
ensures that the windows and doors are pro-
tectedagainst anyexposure to theelements,
notes Charl.
)Woodenwindowsare timeless:Today,
antiquewoodenwindows are still verymuch
in demand, and it is easy to understand why
as wooden windows
offer a timeless ap-
peal thatdoesntdate,
but rather grows in
appeal over time.
Fashions and styles
may come and go, but
the classic beauty of
wood is something
that lasts through the
ages, and this is why
wooden windows
boast the best staying
power when com-
pared to other types
of windows.
Attractive wooden window frames add to the charm of this bathroom. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

BADBOYVIBE:ALL COOL
Chrysler300CV6CRD: ahhsumblock
HANJO STIER
I
f my television is anything to go by,
American vocabulary has decreased to
just two overused phrases: Ermegh-
erd and ahhsum. While the first one is
slightly blasphemous, Id be happy to use
the second to describe thisweeks test car:
Chryslers new 300C.
Although the original 300C appeared in
1957, for the purpose of this reviewwell stick
to the block of a car which surfaced in 2005.
Based on an ageing Mercedes E-Class plat-
form and riddled with niggles, I forgave the
5,7-litre HEMI brute almost all its shortfalls.
The reason for my journalistic mercy was
that the 300C had such unique looks and a
menacingdemeanourwhichcompletelyover-
powered any dynamic or qualitative failings.
And as if that wasnt enough of a burden, the
Chrysler had another blade hanging precari-
ously over its fat, tattooed neck.
Just like other cars with trendy, retro or
concept looks its basically impossible to im-
prove the design. Looking at the butch old
beastandthis2012version,nobodycanaccuse
Chrysler of not having pulled it off. Id go so
far as to proclaim that this one looks even bet-
ter than its father.
That menacing stance remains, the blunt
bumsbeentweaked,headlightsandgrillhave
grownupwithout losing anounce of presence
and that wonderful profile retains its tiny
window line while the massive wheels have
pushed 300Cs shoulders and biceps out even
further.
Youre entitled to your own opinion, but
this car is one of my surprises of the year. It
looks infinitely better in the flesh and I en-
courage you to investigate this immediately.
The only other vehicle with such square and
generous proportions is the Rolls-Royce
Phantom.
Chrysler South Africa offers three models
with features worthy of more praise. For ex-
ample, this3-litre turbo-DieselV6,anew3,6-li-
tre Pentastar petrol V6 or the top-of-line 6,4-li-
treHEMIV8SRT-8all roll ondubs
(20-inch rims) as standard.
I wont run you through every
standard feature of this model,
buthereare somehighlights: key-
less entry and ignition, dual-zone
climate control, rain brake sup-
port, auto wipers and auto active
lights, climate front seats and cup
holders, heated multi-function
steering wheel and hill start as-
sist.
Maybe I should also mention
the reversing camera, UConnect
infotainment system with 8,4-
inch touch-screen and naviga-
tion/Bluetooth/CD/DVD/mp3,
voice command, detailed on-
board computer, tons of leather,
park assist, seven airbags, power
seats, power windows and heated
power mirrors.
How ahhsum is that? Actual-
ly theres more but Id run out of
space. While were on that sub-
ject, the 300ChasdecidedlyAmer-
ican measurements inside and
while the low roof offers accepta-
ble headroom, all other dimen-
sions are incredibly generous.
It took me a while to get used
to thecabins,umm,stylebecause
of the huge screen, vast surfaces and kitsch
blue instruments. Its far removed from those
soberGerman competitors but I quickly grew
fond of the slightly brash American style.
If you want to get really picky, some of the
wood grain panels didnt fit too well, it beeps
too much, the boot lids flimsy and the front
bumper had shocking panel gaps. All was for-
given though because this car exudes a bad
boyvibeandeverything is just socoolwithout
being tacky.
My next discovery was the quiet and
smooth operation of the Fiat-sourced 3-litre
V6 turbo-Diesel (176 kW, 239 hp, 550 Nm) and
five-speed automatic gearbox. 0100 km/h
takes 7,8 seconds, top speed is 232 km/h and
average consumption from the 72 L tank is
claimed at 7,2 L/100km.
Getting 1 000 km range shouldnt be a prob-
lemasouraveragehoveredbetweeneightand
ninewithmixed driving. The gearbox prefers
to exploit low-rev torque, but the very obedi-
ent shift paddles will liven things up a bit
while you enjoy a typically American way of
forward travel pliable and quiet.
The300Cssuspensioncopesextremelywell
with all demands but one erratic driving.
Throw it around like ahot hatch and the yank
tank responds like a cruise liner, slowly and
gently. It corners surprisingly well and the
steering is reasonably lively once you adapt
your driving style to its bulk and placid man-
ner.
Treat it like a luxury sedan and a Chrysler
300C becomes astonishing. Gliding softly
along a highway, the only perceptible noise
is from the big rubber at each corner this
car is extremelywell insulated and almost de-
void of wind and mechanical noise. Its mean
face also clears out the fast lane reasonably
well.
Starting at R539 990 with very few options
left to tick, the Chrysler 300C takes a baseball
bat to any competitors knees and comeswith
a 3-year/100 000 km warranty and service
plan. Its improved most aspects of its ances-
tor, looksevenbetterandoffersanexperience
which can only be described as ahhsum.
The 300Cs suspension copes extremely well with all demands but one erratic driving. Throw it around
like a hot hatch and the yank tank responds like a cruise liner, slowly and gently. PIC: QUICKPIC

Die eerste amptelike fotos van die splin-

Dit is selfsmetdieeersteoogopslagduidelik

gebly het.
Die fotos het die nuwemodel se wreldbui-

Dienuwe IS is deurLexus seLF-CC-konsep-

die voorste uurglas-sierrooster wat n ken-
merk van al Lexus se nuwe modelle geword
het. Die algehele indruk is krag, sierlikheid
en n sterker handelsnaam-identiteit.
Van die kant gesienwys die nuwe IS dat die

Peugeotunveils new2008urbanCrossover
With the 2008, Peugeot capitalises on its
expertise acquired with the success of the
3008Crossover to create an innovative ve-
hicle for the B segment. Set to go on sale
in Europe in Spring 2013, it joins in the
dynamicof theproduct offensive initiated
successfully by the 208, sales of which al-
ready place it second in its segment in Eu-
rope.
ThenewcrossoverbyPeugeot (due inSouth
Africa firsthalf of 2014) is the first vehiclepro-
duced by the Marque that was designed and
developed simultaneously by several geo-
graphic markets. With its worldwide objec-
tives, the 2008 thrusts the Marque into a new
dynamic, in line with its strategy of develop-
ing its crossover range and attracting new
customers.
In aworldwhich is constantly evolving and
increasingly urban, a new generation of cus-
tomers is emerging. Eager to always be on the
move; they feed on dynamism. Agile, diverse,
they can be found on every continent and are
looking for products which reflect their per-
sonality.
Drawing strength from this observation,
the Marque drew up a specification with am-
bitious objectives. From the start, it incorpo-
rated into the DNAof the crossover by Peuge-
ot, which combines an accomplished driving
experience, stylish design with practical ad-
vantages, the challenge of designing a vehicle
intended for an international clientele across
three geographic markets.
Peugeot rose to the challenge. Upmarket,
dynamic, thenewcrossover byPeugeot offers
arichandvariedexperience in theBsegment.
So, at just 4.16m long, the 2008 innovates by
uniquely combining the driving characteris-
tics of a hatchback and the strength of anSUV
with an on-board area (passenger space,mod-
ularity and comfort) which invites you to en-
joy each moment to the full. Equally at ease
in townason theopenroad, it canescape from
the city with confidence due to its extended
mobility features. Stimulating and versa-
tile, the 2008 suits all customers.
The 2008 is to be produced close to itsmar-
kets, in France (Mulhouse), in China (Wu-
han) and in Brazil (Porto Real).
The 2008 reinvents the standards of large-
volumevehicles in thecompactcarsegment.
Innovative from first glance, it successfully
merges the two worlds. The strong stylistic
trend affirms its identity for practicality,
volumeandthedrivingexperienceavailable
with 2008.
With its higher-driving position the 2008,
fitted with Mud&Snow tyres, 17 Dia-
mond wheels with a matt finish, has pro-
nouncedwheel arches that give it an appeal-
ing road presence and stance. The black
bumpers and body sills serve to protect it
fromabrasionswiththeadditionof frontand
rear body protection and side mouldings in
stainless steel.
The front face adopts the latest Peugeot
style codes,withpanel fit and featureswork-
ing together seamlessly and precisely. Fine-
ly sculpted, the bonnet lines infer lightness,
strengthandprotectionof the2008,while the
floating grille face has a solidity of form
with vertical elements to harness aerody-
namic performance and efficiency. The in-
novative headlamps are designed precisely
to reflect the technical functions. Sharp and
precise, they actwith the bodywork to given
the outline appearance of a cats pupil.
Sculpted, they are at onewith the front face,
giving it an even more expressive, techno-
logical and individual character. This look
is emphasised by LED day running lamps.
The new urban crossover has elegant and
sophisticated sculptedwingsandsides, indi-
cating clear athletic qualities. The generous
glazed surfaces, including the panoramic
roof, promise a spacious interior open to its
surroundings.
The rear also combines strength with dy-
namism. The boot volume, with a low loading
sill, has above it a roofline with dynamic
curves, inspired by the RCZ. The wide tailgate
is framed by lamps secured to the bodywork.
Floating inside their housing, the three lumi-
nous claws are lit at their base by LEDs that
appear suspended.
The dynamic and elegant movement of the
roof is also a feature of the profile. A roofwave-
line emerges above the rear seat position and
sets the scene for an exclusive decoration cut
into the metal. As if crimped to the bodywork,
it is the origin of the spoiler in an extension
of the same part, on the surface. The precise
design of the roof bars puts the finishing
touches to the concepts of dynamism and lei-
sure expressed by the Peugeot 2008.
The latest-generation engines draw the
very essence of the lightness and profiled sil-
houette tooffer anexceptionaldrivingexperi-
ence combined with a true breakthrough in
terms of fuel economy. Due to the technology
of the e-HDi Diesel and new 3-cylinder petrol
engines, the 2008 urban crossover stands out
from the competition with CO2 starting from
99g/km.

Suzuki Jimny: thepluckier toy
HANJO STIER
M
ost automobiles, even small and
cheap ones, improve with every
generation and cater for societys
increasing demands of comfort and safety
features. I typed most because you do get
a few which never got that memo one of
them is the Suzuki Jimny.
Although its slightlymoremodern, luxuri-
ous and safe than its SJ ancestors, the Jimny
is a rather basic and old product when com-
paredtoothercars. Itmaynotbeterriblyluxu-
riousoroverlysafebut Iabsolutelyadorecars
like thisandassureyou that even themention
of its name gets me smiling.
Addedtoitsminiaturedimensions, theJim-
nys refusal to get with the program makes
it even pluckier than it already is. Auto wip-
ers, climate control and self-venting Xenon
dampers?Whoneeds emwhenyouhavealad-
der frame chassis, solid axles, manual seats
and an interior from 1989.
While the Terios, RAV-4 and other small
SUVs were munching their oats and taking
Dyna Jets, the Jimnymaturedwith an airbag
or two here and some central locking there.
Except forHondas,everymodelonthemarket
keepsgrowing, addingmorespaceandweight
for passenger comfort; not so the Jimny.
A recent update has given it newheadrests,
ISOFIX anchors, a restyled front end and an
overambitious, rather fake hood scoop. Six
gears, LED lights, dual climate control, navi-
gation, keyless entry and ignition,multifunc-
tion steering wheel these are all things the
Jimny doesnt have. Or need.
Quiteafewareavailableinthecarnextdoor
onanySuzuki showroomandwouldonly look
out of place in this barebones basic 4x4. Com-
pared to the model we tested two years ago,
Im struggling to find any noteworthy points
of improvement other than theminor tweaks
mentioned above.
I firmly believe that this is part of the Jim-
nys immense popularity and explains why it
appealstoabroadsliceof thepublicitssmall
enough to be a breeze in tight parking lots,
simple enough not to intimidate anyone and
light enough to provide excellent off-roading
abilities.
You read right; excellent off-roading abili-
ties. The Jimny would be a laughable toy for
orange girls on tropical islands but it has se-
lectable four-wheel-drive and low range. Cou-
pled to the aforementioned Victorian ladder
chassis, solid axles and negligible mass, it
takes some effort to get this little number
stuck.
On top of that, should your little Suzuki be
grounded or bogged down, simply recruit two
or three blokes of the muscular variety and
in no time youre zipping around again. We
dragged our Jimny into a mild off-road area
and it sailed through it with ease often in
high range.
These respectable bundu bashing capabili-
ties have even given rise to fan communities
all around the country and some specimens
are even pimped upwith biggerwheels, taller
suspension, camping equipment and the like.
Someowners also address its power deficit by
giving the little 1,3L engine a once-over.
This 1,328cc in-line four-cylinder petrol de-
velops maximums of 63kW (86hp) or 110Nm
througha five-speedmanual gearbox to reach
a top speed of 140km/h. We not only discov-
ered the Jimny speedometer to be quite accu-
rate but, with a little patience and bravery,
capable of cracking that number.
Our best 0-100km/h time was just over 12
seconds which is completely irrelevant; you
shouldnt even consider this car if youre a
speed freak. Its top-heavy and ancient con-
struction means that the Jimny jiggles about
considerably at highway speeds, hates strong
windandhigh speedovertakingmanoeuvres.
Thegearbox is rathervaguebutpairedwith
a pleasingly light clutchwhich is easy tomod-
ulate in trafficoroff-road.TheJimnyalsohas,

body to this equation and this is the worlds
second best car to park.

spare wheel on the rear door, the Jimny is
shorter than most compact cars on the road.
The specifications include all basicnecessi-

thats a lot of money for such a small car.
Youre absolutely right but Id like you to find
