Organisations For Ten Rounds Rapid.

1.0 Introduction.

This covers most of the major armies used in World War II, plus the Korean War combatants, since they are very similar to World War Two armies. Some of the data has had to be invented, due to lack of information. Although they have been written for “Ten Rounds Rapid”, they can be used with any set of rules for 20 mm figures, and are suitable for use with 15 mm ones as well. The armies are organised alphabetically, with aircraft at the end in a combined table. Supply vehicles have been omitted, with the exception of those for artillery units, and some of the recovery vehicles are guesses. You can omit them if you wish, or distribute them to lower sub - units. (Figures in brackets are the number of vehicles they represent).

Note : the Panzershreck represents the 3.5” Rocket Launchers. This is also used to represent the South Korean army in which case only Bazooka may be used.

2 V American Tank Battalion Korea 1950 to 1953 Use the 1943 to 45 Tank battalion, with no combat support company, Assault Gun platoons may be used. Tanks may be M4A3 E8, M24, M26, or M46. If attached to an infantry battalion only one company can be fielded. There are 4 companies in this unit, all with the same tank type. In M24 units there are no assault guns, in M26 and M46 units the M4 105’s are replaced by M26/105 (possibly designated M27). M4 105’s may replace the co-axial MG with a flamethrower.

3 British Organisations. These organisations have had some divisional assets added to brigades and battalions to reflect the normal practices. They are noted as Attached and may be removed, and re-concentrated. Infantry are deliberately under strength. 79th Armoured Division may be used by the Americans.

4 Belgium. Europe This is army is estimated. The artillery is mostly German W. W. I weapons converted. Armour was very limited, with one company of 12 vehicles per Infantry division. This has been allowed. From 1940 onwards the Belgium’s organised an Infantry Brigade along British lines. 7 Finnish Army 1939 to1944. A small army, which managed to hold the Russians for some eight or nine months in the winter of 1939 to 1940, and then joined Germany in their invasion of Russia in 1941. The army had little in the way of heavy weapons, most of its armour came from captured Russian sources, or later supplied by the Germans. From 1944 the Finns changed sides, and fought with the Russians.

8 French 1939 to 1941. This organisation was used for the campaigns in Europe, and also in Syria and North West Africa. For Free French until 1943 use the British organisations, form then on use the US ones. The Mountain Corp in Italy appears to have used its own organisation, of which I have no details. There were also cavalry divisions (DLC) but again I have no details. As an approximation use the Dragoon Portees battalion replacing the motor transport with horses, but retaining the UE’s. The following tables are by division, starting with DLM, then DCR and finally Infantry. In Syria H35 tank battalions and Infantry units may be used. In Tunisia Infantry and S35 or H39 tanks can be used. French Infantry have no A/T Grenades, or A/T Rifles, but the British supplied 500 Boyes A/T rifles to the French. It is doubtful that any were issued.

9 German Formations. The German army fielded over 300 infantry divisions, which provided the bulk of their forces. 10 Hungarian Formations One of Germany’s allies in 1941 and from 1942 to early 1945. The formations given here cover the later period, in 1941 the army assisted in the invasion of Yugoslavia, and supplied a small group of Mechanised Cavalry to the German invasion in 1941, withdrawn by November of that year. In 1942 and 1943 it supplied one army consisting of 3 Infantry Corps and the Hungarian 1st Armoured Division. This force was destroyed, and no further action was undertaken until January 1944. There appears to have been little change in organisation in this period. When Hungary surrendered in 1945 its forces were reorganised on Russian lines, and given Russian equipment.

11 Italian Formations. The least well prepared of the major powers in Europe, the Italians have unfairly become the but of many jokes. Much of the equipment was elderly, particularly the artillery, whilst the tanks tended to be a generation behind those of their enemies. The bulk of the army fought in North Africa and was effectively destroyed by May 1943. The corp supplied to the Eastern Front ceased to exist in the counterattack following Stalingrad. Only 2 armoured divisions were committed to action, in North Africa, there were some 6 more held back in Italy, these could substitute Souma S35 for the M13/40. Infantry lacked A/T grenades. The organisations shown were retained by Fascists units after 1943, those fighting on the Allied side used American organisation, with mostly American equipment, although some British weapons were supplied.

12 Japanese Formations Of the major powers the Japanese were the most disorganised. Although there were official organisations for divisions they were most frequently honoured in the breach. The major portion of the army was committed to mainland China and Manchuria, and in 1939 was given a rude shock at the hands of the Russians. The Western Allies met the more lightly equipped, if extremely high morale forces. Only one or two Armoured divisions were formed, and most armour acted as independent companies, or regiments.

13 Polish Formations. A much more effective army than the 1939 campaign has given credit for. It was largely an infantry force, with two motorised brigades, and a large cavalry arm. There were also several armoured trains. Despite rumours to the contrary Polish cavalry did not charge German tanks with lance. Infantry did not have A/T grenades, but were well equiped with A/T rifles. From 1940 the Poles in the West followed British organisations, and from 1942 in the East Russian ones.

14 Russian Formations. The Russian army and its disadvantages and advantages are by now well known. Some of its limitations are built into the Back to Basics rules, and Tiger for that matter. To recap these here, the Russians only trained their infantry to use one small arm, so losing the ability to re-man MG’s mortars or A/T rifles. Much of the artillery fired over open sights rather than using indirect fire more normal in the other major armies. This caused heavy losses to the guns. The direct fire doctrine was reinforced by the appearance of assault artillery such as the SU-122, SU-152, and ISU-152. Russian Infantry carried large quantities of explosive, so have A/T grenades at all times. A/T rifles should not be used prior to 1941.

Add 1 vehicle to each company, of strength 4. Increase the strength of the A/T gun and Mortars to 4. This is a full strength unit, many battalions had lower strengths of support weapons. From 1943 delete 50 mm Mortar and add another 82 mm Mortar.

Independent artillery divisions had very varied composition. Mortars in batteries of 2 120 mm, or 160 mm mortars(3), with tractors. Light Brigades had 2 Regiments of 3 Lt battalions as above, these would be

motorised. Howitzer Brigades had 2 Regiments of 2 Medium Battalions, with 122 mm

Howitzers, and 1 battalion of 152 mm Gun Howitzers. Gun Brigades could have 122 mm, 152 mm or 203 mm weapons in 3 battalions.
