The US trade commission hasfiled a lawsuit against Cambridge Analytica, accusing theUKbased data company of adopting “deceptive tactics” to obtain personal information ofFacebook users, a day after it imposed a whopping $5 billion fineon the social media giant for privacy violations.
Cambridge Analytica (CA) isaccused of acquiring data fromup to 87 million Facebook profiles for use in political campaigns around the world.
The $5 billion penalty againstFacebook is the largestever imposed on any company for violating consumers’ privacy. In addition to paying the penalty, ithas also agreed to submit itselfto new restrictions and a modified corporate structure that willhold the company accountablefor the decisions it makes about
its users’ privacy. The FederalTrade Commission (FTC) onWednesday alleged that Cambridge Analytica, its former CEOAlexander Nix and app developer Aleksandr Kogan deceived consumers by falselyclaiming they did not collect anypersonally identifiable information from Facebook users whowere asked to answer surveyquestions and share some oftheir profile data.
“They employed deceptive tactics to harvest personal information from tens of millions ofFacebook users for voter profiling and targeting,” it said in apress release issued on Wednesday.
The FTC also announced settlement with Nix and Kogan, saying the duo has agreed to administrative orders restricting howthey conduct any business in thefuture and requiring them to delete or destroy any personal in
formation they collected. TheCambridge Analytica, however, has filed for bankruptcy and hasnot settled the FTC’s allegations.
Kogan is the developer of aFacebook application called theGSRApp — also referred to as thethisisyourdigitallife app.
The GSRApp asked its users toanswer personality and otherquestions, and collected information such as the likes of publicFacebook pages by the app’susers and by the friends in theirsocial network.
The FTC alleges, Kogan, together with Cambridge Analytica and Nix, developed, used, andanalysed data obtained from theGSRApp to generate personalityscores for the app users and theirFacebook friends.
