COTSWOLD SCHOOL NEWSLETTER MAY 2017 Kia ora koutou Welcome back everyone. We have another busy term planned for our children. A special welcome to the following students who have joined the Cotswold Learning Community this Term:- Rosa Gibb-Faumuina Max Bianco Cooper Peterson Haylee McPherson-Palmer Levi Berryman-Hale Grace Fetu Ava Botha Amelia Dodd Welcome to Kathryn Fortune and Brett Smith who join our team this term. Kathryn has joined our Learning Support Team while Brett will establish our next New Entrant classroom which gets underway towards the middle of this term. Congratulations to Matthew Growcott who has won gold in the under-11 boys at the Oceania Squash Championships. We are all very proud of your achievement. Matthew attended the tournament which was held at the Henderson Squash Club in Auckland and attracted over 200 entries across the age groups, with players from Australia, China, French Polynesia, Hong Kong, New Caledonia and Singapore. We will follow Matthew’s progress over the next few months as he takes part in area and national competitions. We have incredible writers at Cotswold School. I am in the privileged position of seeing the amazing writing our students achieve. Congratulations to Stephane from Room 6 who recently shared his amazing story with me. I love the exciting words he has used to bring his story to life. Click here to read Stephane's story. Today I had the pleasure of reading stories written by three children from Room 4 about Autumn. Congratulation to Ella-Rose, Eve and McKayla who all used some wonderful words in their writing to describe Autumn. Thank you to all parents who attended junior and senior school interviews towards the end of Term 1. It was pleasing to see that across our school 95% of parents attended interviews. Research clearly indicates the positive effects of parent involvement on children, families, and school when schools and parents continuously support and encourage the children's learning and development. An article I read recently concluded that the most accurate predictor of a student's achievement in school is not income or social status but the extent to which that student's family is able to: Create a home environment that encourages learning Express high (but not unrealistic) expectations for their children's achievement and future careers Become involved in their children's education at school and in the community

A reminder that we have a continued focus on our children monitoring their development in relation to key competencies. Our children are learning a range of skills and abilities (key competencies) to help them to do well in life. There are lots of things parents can do to help their child develop and use these. The world our children live in is very different to what it was like when we were growing up and is continuing to change. It is no longer enough to just learn “facts”. No-one knows exactly what life will be like for today’s children when they become adults, but we do know that they will need to develop a range of key competencies, so that they can adapt and function well in the world. These key competencies are:

Thinking

Using language, symbols, and texts

Managing self

Relating to others

Participating and contributing

These key competencies are an important part of our children's learning at school. They are included in the New Zealand Curriculum and are woven into all the teaching that takes place. During 2016 we developed indicators (rubric) for each competency that allow students to monitor their development in relation to each competency. Each newsletter will include an explanation for one competency and detail the criteria children and teachers will use to identify development. During March, April and May our focus was on Relating to Others with an emphasis on respect. From mid-May through to the end of Term 2 our focus will be on Managing Self with an emphasis on effort.

The Cotswold Way – Managing Self Students who manage themselves are enterprising, resourceful, reliable, and resilient. They establish personal goals, make plans, manage projects and set high standards. They have strategies for meeting challenges. They know when to lead, when to follow, and when and how to act independently.

Cotswold School - Building Brighter Futures – He Ara Whakamua Page 3

Key competencies are not just for school, but for life. Your child uses these key competencies in many different situations at e.g. home, at sport, at church, at cultural occasions, and eventually at work. The key competencies are a really useful way to think about and get involved in your child’s learning. There are many ways to do this:

Understand what’s happening at school - ask your teacher how they are teaching your child about key competencies, why, and what you can do to help at home. Use the rubric above as a guide and think how you can develop your child’s competency at home – a good start would be to focus on “Is Responsible”.

Be enthusiastic and interested in what your child is doing at school – ask your child what they learned today, talk about the skills that they are developing, and how useful they are in life

Do things together that uses one or more key competencies - this shows your child that what they learn at school is connected to the things they do in everyday life.

Things To Try At Home

Notice and praise your child when they do regular chores or homework without having to be asked. This shows them that you value their independent self-management

Talk about the challenges of learning, not just about what has been learned, and show them that you are always learning as well

Support and encourage your child when the going gets tough. For example, say “the basic facts, or paragraphs for a young child, can be really hard to understand, so we’re working at it together”. Be positive, and show them that you have confidence in them, rather than letting them make excuses.

HELLS PIZZA READING CHALLENGE. Year 3-6 students will have the opportunity to take part in this challenge through the school. They will be given a sheet to fill in and a parent or teacher will sign off after each book is read. After 7 books have been read they will receive a ‘pizza wheel’ from Mrs Collins in the library that can be taken to Hell’s pizza for a free 333 kid’s pizza. We want students to read books at their level and books that will take them about a week to read. This challenge is also available through the public libraries if you would like your younger children to take part. NZ Book Council have partnered with Hell’s pizza for this nationwide challenge.

KEEPING OURSELVES SAFE PROGRAMME. In Term 2 we will be running the ‘Keeping Ourselves Safe’ Programme. Keeping Ourselves Safe has been designed in partnership with New Zealand Police. It aims to enable children to learn and apply a range of safety skills that they can use when interacting with others. Children learn to recognise the differences between healthy and unhealthy relationships whilst growing in confidence. Constable Debbie Wilson will be holding a parent meeting to discuss the programme in more detail and will be available to answer any questions you have. The meeting will be held:

2.30pm - 3.00pm Wednesday 10th May 2017 in the School Staff Room.
