MacDougalls of LornIf you are a MacDougall, youshare in a proud and distinguishedScottish legacy.
Mac means “son of”, while the term“clan” comes from the Gaelic word for
children. Thus, Clan MacDougall signifiesthe children of the son(s) of Dougall. Dougall, ourclan founder, was the eldest son of Somerled, King ofthe Hebrides and of what is now Argyll. In 1164,Dougall inherited the heartland of his father’s empire.
Clan MacDougall is one of the four oldest Highlandclans still in existence. The principal seats of our chiefswere Dunstaffnage, Gylen, and Dunollie Castles. Ourpresent Chief is Morag MacDougall of MacDougall,thirty-first Chief of the Clan. Her official residence isDunollie House, which is near the castle on the cliffsof Oban.
During the centuries that Clan MacDougall was apowerful influence along the West Highland Coast, anumber of families became associated with the clan.Descendants of these associated families share a clanconnection and are welcomed members of ourSociety.
MacDowalls ofGallowayThe MacDowalls/Macdowallsrepresent an integral and
especially strong membership inour Society, an acknowledgementof our historical alliance and
interconnections despitedistinct heritages andhereditary chiefs.
The MacDowalls are thoughtto be anciently related to theMacDougalls through“Prince” Fergus, Lord ofGalloway. He was acontemporary ally and
possibly a relation of King Somerled of Argyll andthe Isles.
The family’s name, like MacDougall, derives fromthe Gaelic MacDhùghaill, “son of the darkstranger”. But their patronymic ancestor is said tobe Duegald, younger son of Uchtred, second Lordof Galloway.
The caput baroniae (seat of barony) is atGarthland Mains in the Rhinns (isthmus) ofGalloway, as well as Logan House and Gardensand Freugh of old. The present seat is at BarrCastle, Garthland, Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire.
