    n 2011 the first Castle Quay Weekender took

    lace in seven empty units on Castle Lane,

    ttracting 5,000 visitors.

    ive years on, those vacant shops are

    hriving independent restaurants, cafes and

    usinesses surrounding Castle Mound and the

    rchaeology Park, with the Higgins Bedford

    t its heart. And the Castle Quay Weekender

    inviting you back to celebrate.

    WHERE IS IT?

    he Castle Quay Weekender will take place

    n and around Castle Lane, alongside the

    eautiful River Great Ouse and adjacent to the

    istoric Castle Mound. It is just seconds fromedford High Street, a ten minute walk from

    he mainline train station and easily accessed

    om all town-centre car parks. On Saturday,

    he Archaeology Park will host the l ive music

    tage and from there you can navigate

    ourself to the other activities taking place on

    astle Mound, at the Higgins Bedford and on

    astle Bailey Gardens. Turn to page 11 for our

    andy map of where the action is, how to get

    ere and where to park.

    WHAT’S GOING ON?

    From live music to fabulous food, circus

    workshops to our art and craft market, there

    is something for everyone at the Castle Quay

    Weekender. The BedPop Record Shop will

    be popping up at the Higgins, Bedford’s free

    runners will be demonstrating their awesome

    skills (and running workshops too) and we’ve

    got dancers popping up all over the place.

    Come along to ConTENTment to discover the

    way to happiness, take a ten minute tour of the

    Higgins, learn to draw at our portrait workshops

    or write something deep and meaningful on

    the Before I Die wall (more info on page 15).

    Castle Lane is home to some of Bedford’s best

    independent restaurants, so you definitely won’t

    leave hungry. Try Mexican, Italian and Indian

    cuisine, enjoy DJs on the terrace as you sip a

    cocktail at The Lane bar or pop into the Pensieri

    Coffee Shop.

    or producing bands capable of making it big. Over the weekend, the festival will host a choice

    election of the area’s best bands and solo artists, as well as a few visitors from further afield.

    We’ve got some of the top DJs in town on

    the ones and twos over the weekend…

    6.10pm: Alex Hobbs will be dropping an

    uninterrupted hour-long set, building up the

    atmosphere as we head towards our headline

    bands. Alex will be laying down an eclectic

    selection of soul, funk, hip hop, Latin, jazz and

    everything in between.

    The Roll Your Own Records DJ Crew willget the main stage started in the morning,

    building up to our first band at 12. The Friday

    Night Blender sessions will take over from

    3pm to 6pm.

    Vinyl Sunday: Bedford Modern Funk & Soul

    Club will be hosting five hours of rare groove,

    bringing the soul to Sunday between 12-5pm

    from The Lane bar terrace. DJ’s Paul Miller and

    Rob Gipson will deliver the modern funk and

    soul leaving Geoff Ware & Hammy with the

    Northern classics.

    pop. Imagine Queen meeting Prince and

     jamming through the Jackson 5’s

    Archaeology Park, The Lane offers a

    great vantage point to enjoy the bands all

    day on Saturday while sipping a coffee, beer,

    prosecco or cocktail. On Sunday, Geoff Ware

    from the Pad’s Sunday Soul Sessions and

    Paul Miller, of the Bedford Modern Funk and

    Soul Club will jointly host vinyl Sunday on

    the terrace, spinning super sweet soul in the

    (fingers crossed) sunshine. Happy days!

    to Bedford as part of the Castle Quay

    Spoken word artist, Lee

    Nelson will be hosting a

    Poetry Slam for all the

    family on Saturday 18th

    June at 3pm in the

    Friends of Refugees’ tent.

    Well known on the poetry

    circuit, Lee will be

    performing his own work and introducing

    local poets in this fast-paced celebration of

    the spoken word. Participants of all ages are

    encouraged, but please register by 2.30pm.

    To mark Refugee Week, the Higgins

    Bedford is hosting a number of events

    including a display of the belongings of

    refugees who have fled to Britain. The

    Objects from Distant Lands exhibition will

    take place in the foyer and the film of the

    same name, made by Sean Doyle, will be

    shown throughout the day.

    The Sir William Harpur Gallery at the

    Higgins will host Bedford Re-Imagined,

    an exhibition of work by final year interior

    design and interior architecture students

    from the University of Bedfordshire. The

    projects are based on the Higgins Sheds

    and the former Topps Tiles showroom at 26

    St Cuthbert’s Street.

    edford Juggling Club will be running circus

    kills workshops on Castle Mound.

    hroughout the weekend, the Circus of

    lustration will host art workshops in the Art

    Craft Market on the lawn of the Higgins and

    make sure you head to Narrative Industries

    t Animal Studio on Castle Lane for loads

    of arty animation activities. The crew

    from Dancevybz will be popping up with

    demos and dance workshops and there arefacepainters too. All of this to a backdrop

    of live music, delicious food and (we hope)

    glorious sunshine!

    Before I Die is an interactive public art

    project that invites people to share their

    personal aspirations in public space. The

    original wall was created by artist CandyChang in February 2011 on an abandoned

    house in her neighbourhood in New Orleans.

    Since then, over 1,000 Before I Die walls

    have been created in 73 countries and 36

    languages by passionate people around

    the world.

    Thanks to Lisa Sanderson, artist Anne-Marie

    Stijelja, the Higgins Bedford, Bedford College

    and BedPop, Castle Quay Weekender is proud

    to debut Bedford’s very own Before I Die wall.

    Located outside the Higgins, you are invited

    to add your own dreams, aspirations and

    thoughts to it.

    Write on it, read it, photograph it, share it and

    be part of it.

    HOW TO GET HERE:

    Castle Quay is easy to reach by car, public

    transport, on foot or by bike.

    BY CA R :

    Bedford is conveniently located between the

    A1 and M1 and is well served by the A421 dual

    carriageway which links the two major roads

    as well as the A6 and A428. On Saturday, take

    advantage of two hours’ free parking in one

    of the town centre’s council-owned car parks.

    Parking is free on Sundays.

    Bedford train station is just a ten minute walk

    from Castle Quay.

    A Park & Ride service operates from the

     junction of the A6 and A421 at Elstow,

    providing regular services to Bedford town

    Cambridge.
