Miss Singapore Universe Miss Photogenic, New Paper Babe of the Year twice, Best Supporting Actress 2014 and Best Actress 2015 – how does Rebecca Lim do it?

The arresting Rebecca Lim is no stranger to Singaporeans, having appeared in a host of popular TV drama series and having won numerous accolades, including for Best Actress in the recent Star Awards 2015.

With her radiant and youthful visage, it’s hard to believe that she made her debut in the public eye back in 2005 as a runner-up in the Miss Singapore Universe pageant. She won the Miss Photogenic Award then.

Now an accomplished actress and bona fide babe (yes, she’s won accolades for being one too), Rebecca shares with Weekender several aspects of her personal life and who and what has helped her stay strong and beautiful.

What have you been busy With of late?I recently returned from Malaysia. I was there filming the finale of the trilogy for “The Journey: Our Homeland”.

And I am currently busy with two drama productions. That and a romantic comedy, “Sealed with a Kiss”. Also, a bit part in “Mata Mata”, Season 3.

So things have been pretty hectic for me at the moment. But all is good! I love being busy! I appreciate that people want to cast me in shows!

you’ve acted in quite a number of shoWs. Who has been your favourite co-star so far?I have so many! Since entering the industry, I’ve learnt so much, especially from the veterans. I always enjoy working with veterans because there’s so much I can learn from their craft and their life lessons that they very willingly share while we wait between shots.

could you please describe the funniest moment you’ve had While filming?I did a comedy with Gurmit Singh and Huang Wen Long recently. They are super good at what they do.

I have never laughed so hard in such a long time. Every day on set was a laugh

fest and they would be really hilarious off camera with their jokes and antics as well.

What’s the most difficult thing about being an actress?Being judged by people who don’t necessarily know you. Sometimes people expect you to behave a certain way even when you’re not at work. They forget that sometimes, at the end of the day, we are human and we make mistakes.

What’s your family’s sentiment about you being an actress?They’ve been extremely supportive. Even though they don’t watch my shows, which is actually a good thing for me and I hope it stays that way, they have been with me through all the ups and downs and have always been so encouraging, my sounding board, and my wake up call to reality. you’ve Won the neWpaper babe of the year tWice [and We feel you should’ve Won more]. inquiring readers Want to knoW, are you single? What kind of man Would attract you?Yup, I am. I think chemistry is important but so difficult to find and describe. What I really appreciate in a relationship is trust, communication and honesty. hoW do you usually unWind or chill out over the Weekend?I hardly have weekends free to chill these days. But, if I do, those are extremely precious moments and I spend it with the people who matter – my family and friends I love.

Where else can We look out for you next? “The Journey: Our Homeland” will be premiering in July, followed by “Sealed with a Kiss” right after. Please don’t get sick of me! Haha.

Record-breaking event at SEA Games Water PoloOur Singapore athletes aren’t the only ones breaking records!

On Jun 11, more than 500 Star Learners Child Care students attempted to enter the Singapore Book of Records at a 28th SEA Games Men’s Water Polo match.

While the Singapore Men’s Water Polo team competed against Malaysia in the SEA Games, the students enthusiastically cheered them on with duck whistles, simultaneously setting a new national record for the largest number of people blowing duck whistles in one venue.

to build cHaracter iN tHe YouNgThe inspiration for the idea for this new record came from Star Learners founder Tan Meng Wei, who used to be in his secondary school water polo team. He hopes that exposure to competitive sports, will help the children to pick up qualities such as team spirit, good sportsmanship, patriotism, confidence and determination. And, as the saying goes, “go big or go home”, why not set a record too?

Who will be crowned SEA Games Football Champion?It’s going down to the wire with a nail-biting finish – we look at the chances of the biggest teams in ASEAN to win the coveted SEA Games Football Gold

Right as our paper is being distributed, our beloved Lions will be on a do or die mission against Indonesia, to make it to the semi-finals of the 28th SEA Games Football semi-finals.

Currently, both Singapore and Indonesia have 6 points, but Indonesia has a stronger goal difference of 5, as compared to the Lions’ 2.

wHat it would taKe for siNgaPore to go tHrougHOn Thu, Jun 11, 8.30pm, Singapore has to give its all to win Indonesia in order to make it through to the semi-finals. There is no other way. A draw would mean Indonesia goes through on better goal difference.

The general sentiment of most Singaporeans is that our boys have good skills and heart, but their play and passing have often let them down. If the team puts in a good shift and takes its chances, a win against Indonesia is highly possible. However, anything less and it’s curtains for Singapore.

One niggling issue is our strike force being goal-shy. Sahil Suhaimi may have scored a late goal against Cambodia on Monday, and put his finger to his lips to silence the critics, but his strike conversion rate (into actual goals) has been far from convincing.

Understandably, most would feel that if Singapore does make it to the semi-finals, it would be fortuitous to avoid Thailand in the draw. Why? Chances are, Singapore would stand a better chance if they avoid the “Kings of Southeast Asian Football” who have been impressive in the group stage.

tHailaNd or VietNaM tHe faVourite?Both Thailand and Vietnam have had strong showings in the group stage matches, with huge thrashings of their opposition. Let’s have a brief look at a summary of the two teams’ results.

Out of four matches so far, Vietnam has won by four or more goals in three of the matches. However, it surprisingly struggled against lowly Laos, with just a 1-0 win.

Although Thailand recorded impressive 6-0 and 5-0 victories over Laos and Brunei respectively, it had to hammer out narrow 1-0 wins over both Malaysia and the new boys of Timor Leste. Looking at this, it may seem that Thailand is not as strong.

Nonetheless, Thailand is not considered Southeast Asian football royalty for nothing. Thailand has often been the football champion of ASEAN, whether in the SEA Games or the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Cup.

The silky skills and high fitness levels of the Thai players are also of great renown, and this could be their advantage against the industrious and passionate Vietnamese. I suspect the determination and calibre of the Thais will be the edge, and they will prevail in the Final.

In a nutshell, Singapore has a strong chance to reach the semi-finals if it gives its all against Indonesia and takes its scoring chances, while Thailand appear to be the strongest team and most likely to win the SEA Games Football Gold.

Whatever the case, as the saying goes, “the ball is round” and we will only know the final results as they unfold before our eyes. Stay tuned to this year’s heart-stopping SEA Games Football action.

After Jurassic Park (1993) was released, it was revealed that the iconic velociraptor dinosaur was a cinematic dramatisation.

Not only was it much larger on screen, its slimy reptilian skin made it more menacing than the actual species really was. And, the Tyrannosaurus Rex was supposed to be covered in feathers.

Now, what new terrifying monsters will Jurassic World spring on us?

Jurassic world – newer, Bigger & BadderThe original Jurassic Park has had two comparatively mediocre sequels, so what would make this third one so outstandingly entertaining? Perhaps, after those box office slumps, the creators have discovered the magic formula for reviving the franchise: Replace “Park” with “World” to make it sound more... phenomenal. But, of course, the gripping teasers and trailers prove that the buzz was sparked by a lot more than a simple title change.

It’s been 22 years since the dramatic events of Jurassic Park, and now Jurassic World is a successful prehistoric playground. Tourists can go on bubble rides alongside herds of dinosaurs, relax on a raft as stegosauruses graze by the river and watch in awe as immense mosasauruses leap from the water to feed!

The dinosaurs are bigger, meaner and more majestic than before, and it’s all totally safe for enjoyment – or so they say.

The green-eyed MonsTerBehind the veneer of the bright and bustling theme park, a greater evil prowls within the cages, raring to break free. The InGen scientists at Jurassic World have mastered the art and science of reproducing life-sized prehistoric creatures but that’s not enough for them.

The park’s head of operations, Claire Dearing (played by Bryce Dallas Howard of M Night Shyamalan’s The Village), insists, “We have learned more in the past decade from genetics than a century of digging up bones. A whole new frontier has opened up.”

upon the world. But, as he rightly guesses, trapping an unpredictable leviathan on an island packed with tourists is a disastrous idea.

FaMiliar FavouriTes FroM earlier FilMsJurassic World brings a collection of new faces and never-before-seen creatures but the classic icons from the first Jurassic Park have also returned for more heart-stopping action. You can catch the sharp and frightening velociraptors – which displayed scarily-high intelligence in Jurassic Park – in action with their trainer. Veteran actor BD Wong reprises his role as Dr Henry Wu, the head genetic engineer of InGen.

Making an appearance from even further back – the original “Jurassic Park” novels by Michael Crichton – is InGen’s original ambition to create a dinosaur species that is more fearsome than historically accurate.

Is this new beast the lost vision from the original story that’s finally getting its debut? My anticipation as a Jurassic Park fan is at an all-time high – this movie is the summer blockbuster I wouldn’t miss for the world.

Ever wondered what a Minion does behind closed doors? Or what Minions are really made of?

Since these ridiculously bubbly characters were introduced in Despicable Me (2010), they’ve taken the world by yellow storm. Now, they’re getting their very own story told – and all of our Minion-related questions may finally be answered!

Three LiTTLe MinionsThe Minions movie is centred upon the trio of Kevin, Stuart and Bob (all voiced by Pierre Coffin), familiar faces from the original Despicable Me series of films. If you diligently stayed for the bonus end credits

scene in Despicable Me 2, you’ll remember that they adorably ‘auditioned’ and got the part for Minions.

Follow the three of them and their Minion race back to the beginning of time. They’ve existed for only one purpose: To serve history’s most despicable villains. From the terrifying prehistoric apex predator T-Rex (yes, that’s right) to the fearsome fanged

Dracula, the Minions have quite a strong portfolio of former employers – think Google and Apple, but evil.

Unfortunately, as most of us are aware, Minions are quite the clumsy bunch. After accidentally destroying all their nefarious masters, they decide to isolate themselves in Antarctica, where they slowly sink into purposeless depression.

Tired of seeing his comrades so hopeless, Kevin devises a plan to hunt for the next top villain to serve.

ViLLain ConVenTion of UnConVenTionaL ViLLainsAlong with rebellious Stuart and kid Bob, Kevin ventures out to a villain convention, where the most despicable felons gather. There, they compete for the right to serve the stylish and ambitious Scarlet Overkill (voiced by Sandra Bullock), who

is determined to dominate the world as the first female super-villain.

What silly antics will the Minions pull to convince Scarlet to take them under her wing? What bizarre adventures await the cute Minions? And will Scarlet be able to fulfil her goal – especially with the bumbling Minions in tow? You’ll have to watch this movie to keep up with all the hilarity.

CoLoUr Me happyJust in time for the release of Minions, the Pantone Colour Institute has released a new colour just for the little buggers, called Minion Yellow.

This cute colour was created by balancing out the yellow façade of the Minions. Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, explained that Pantone Minion Yellow “is the colour of hope, joy and optimism”. How lovely.

Popular R&B Singer Pharrell Williams likely inspired the creation of this pleasant colour, as his hit song “Happy” was featured in Despicable Me 2.

Eiseman also said that Minion Yellow “[lights] the way to the intelligence of an open mind”. Well, I don’t know about smarts but the silly Minions will certainly entertain and snuggle their way further into our hearts.

Singapura: A gem in the roughDespite garnering several less-than- stellar reviews, Singapura: The Musical is worth the watch – our entertainment writer shares why

After watching a number of stage productions and reviewing some of them, I’m still not a fan of musicals. So it came as a surprise when I was profoundly moved by Singapura: The Musical.

Set in the tumultuous period from 1955 to 1965, Singapura focuses on the Tan family and its struggles during the waves of social and political changes in Singapore during that era. The Tans own a traditional kopitiam, a popular coffee shop where their neighbours hang out.

Meanwhile, riots and unrests are erupting in the streets. Some of the local characters from conservative families also engage in taboo affairs with British soldiers. Sparks are flying everywhere – and not just between countries.

It’s a narrative that we Singaporeans might be familiar with but Singapura brings another dimension to the story.

personaL TaLes of Loss & LoVeI was promised, by Singapura’s creator Ed Gatchalian himself, that the musical will show what ordinary Singaporeans were going through during this trying period.

If you missed it, the show’s tag line is “The untold stories, told.”

I was relieved when it delivered exactly as promised – portraying friends torn between alliances. After 16 years of local education, I didn’t want another Social Studies lesson about the advantages of merger, or the like.

The Tan family is good friends with its neighbours, of all races. During the merger, it’s truly heartbreaking to see them yanked from their familiar community, and be caught in a vicious tug of war.

The Tans, in a bid to seek safety, grapple with the guilt of abandoning kopitiam and country. One character begs his stubborn, conservative family to help his friends of other races.

Hardly do we get to see controversial events such as Konfrontasi and the Hock Lee bus riots enacted on stage; Singapura manages to translate them into personal struggles without taking sides. It simply shows you how a split nation had torn the common man.

And, the musical doesn’t worship the “Man in White”. (He’s a character in the show symbolising some of our political leaders.)

The only shortcoming of this show was how much emotion there was to spill out in so little time, perhaps resulting in characters that some critics have remarked as “simplistic” and “unrelatable”.

LoCaL sLanG, foreiGn faCesPerhaps a large part of this factor is due to the foreign nationalities in the cast. Singapura was touted as a show for the world acted out by international talents. The cast largely consists of Filipino thespians, together with Canadians, Americans and Singaporeans.

As expected, their accents showed. But they made an honest, respectable effort to capture the Singlish slang and – most importantly – not make a joke of our local accents, whether Chinese, Malay, Tamil or Singlish.

Imitating an accent takes a while. Making it not sound like satire or racism takes even longer. I know I can’t even speak my own mother tongue without sounding like a parody of my own race.

I did question the occasionally oddly-used “lah” and “kiasu” but I have to give

them credit for not portraying Singlish as a big cultural caricature. It wasn’t perfect but neither was it distasteful.

MoVinG MUsiCaL nUMbersUltimately, what makes Singapura stand out is its original, heartfelt and enjoyable score, which was done justice by the powerful vocals of the cast. From the comical to the rousing, Gatchalian delivered a collection of poignant and pleasing songs.

The catchy number “At the Kopitiam” used our local slang affectionately to capture the boisterous kampong spirit of a coffee shop that many of us are nostalgic for.

Other hits included “Moving Forward”, a hopeful sonata about Singapore’s then-future; and the encouraging “Tomorrow Begins Today”.

Unfortunately, due to patchy audio on the day I caught the show, I was unable to catch a number of the key verses in the musical which, from the parts I could hear, were potentially some of the wittiest lines in the show.

Nevertheless, with Singapore’s Golden Jubilee rolling in around the corner, this is a timely performance to catch to get into the celebratory mood.

If anything, Singapura shocked me with the dawning realisation that our nation has achieved so much in only 50 years – so much that our neighbours are compelled to learn and share it with the world.

That’s a sentiment behind this musical that I truly appreciate, even if the delivery doesn’t satisfy some of those who’ve seen it.

Zhao Wei a Tiger Mom?

Popular TV and movie actress Zhao Wei, most famous for “My Fair Princess” or “Huanzhu Gege”, shares with us on juggling filming and family, and Tiger Mom parenting

Returning from a six-year television hiatus, popular actress Zhao Wei, also known as Vicki Zhao, is back in a new incarnation.

The Chinese television and movie idol is best known for her innocent, girl-next-door roles as Lu Yiping in “Romance in the Rain” and Xiaoyanzi or Huanzhu Gege in “My Fair Princess”, for which she became the youngest winner of the Golden Eagle Award for Best Actress, in 1999. She no longer plays that doe-eyed girl on screen.

Last year, she snagged two Best Actress awards for her role as a distressed mother in Chinese film Dearest, about a couple in a remote village dealing with the loss of their son. She has even branched out into directing, with her 2013 directorial debut So Young breaking the grossing record for a female Chinese director within the span of a week.

More recently, Zhao Wei stars in the notable TV series “Tiger Mom” as the titular career-driven mother, Bi Shengnan, who has sky-high expectations of her daughter. What does this successful actress and budding director really think of Tiger Moms, and how what are her thoughts on juggling her busy filming schedule and family life? She answers some of our queries.

How do you personally feel about your tiger MoM cHaracter in tHe sHow?She has very high expectations of everyone, including herself, so she ends up pressurising the people around her and stressing them out.

are you like tHat in real life?I’m the complete opposite – I’m actually very laid-back and easy-going!

so, do you consider yourself a tiger MoM tHen?I’m not! Because I’m busy with work and am less involved at home, I don’t get that big a say in matters. I just go along with their decisions. But I do discipline my child, although I can’t bear to.

How did directing cHange you as an actress?It really helped me to understand scripts and characters more deeply. I discovered more ways of approaching and portraying roles that I wouldn’t have known as just an actor.

would you ratHer enjoy success or Happiness?I’d take happiness, because it’s invaluable. But it doesn’t have to be either/or – we should try to have both in life. Right now, I’m in a good place.

“tiger MoM” Marks your big return to television. any funny story to sHare froM your first sHoot in years?It’s been very long since I last filmed in Beijing, where I’d lived for 20 years. A big crowd of

people came to support us. Some fans set up a pizza stand, some brought hotpots from their restaurants and there were even specialty snack stalls lining the road.

After we wrapped, the crew of “Tiger Mom” was sad to see me go – they haven’t had such a big feast while filming before!

do you tHink singaporeans can relate to “tiger MoM”?Having lived in Singapore for a while, I understand that children’s education is a top worry for many parents here. “Tiger Mom” explores this concern but also takes a funny and interesting look at it. It’s worth watching for the whole family.

wHat are your plans now?I’m probably not going to film for the next one or two years. I’ve been spending too much time on filming – about four movies per year. I’m planning to spend more time with my family, and achieve a better balance in my life.

Good newS: Skip the Queue, for now!Loyal fans of The Sushi Bar, or potential ones yet to try its fare, rejoice! The Sushi Bar Dining, a new outlet right in the heart of town, at Ngee Ann City Level 5, has just opened in a soft launch.

The news (and the media) has yet to catch on so, unlike its Far East Plaza outlet, there is no queue during lunchtime and you won’t have to worry about being turned away – for now. Hurry down to the new Ngee Ann City outlet before the word spreads!

After Channel U had featured The Sushi Bar (at Far East Plaza) it was almost impossible to get a seat in the restaurant without coming early and queuing for a long time. The official launch of The Sushi Bar Dining is on Jun 19, so you’ve been warned.

new diSheS At the SuShi BAr dininGTo tie in with the opening of the new restaurant, new dishes will be unveiled. Both the new Wagyu Don and Aburi Chirashi Don look sumptuous and mouthwatering. You can head down and see (and taste) it yourself.

Co-owner and chef Eugene Heng says, “We’ll be rolling out the new dishes slowly as we do not want The Sushi Bar Dining to be that different from our first outlet.”

As with his first outlet, customers and good, fresh sushi come first.

hoW dId yoU sTarT baKInG?I started when I decided to bake my younger (then three-year-old) daughter’s birthday cake. It was an A-shaped cake, which took quite a while to plan and design how to go about making it. I felt that I needed to document it, since it’s not every day that one bakes a letter-shaped cake.

At that time, I’d been reading food blogs and I thought, sharing my baking method might benefit someone who’s planning to do the same. Thus, my first blogpost was born, and there was no turning back.

Furthermore, when I was staying in California, I got to taste more authentic food from other ethnic groups or countries, like Vietnamese, Thai, Indian and even Mexican.

The Red Velvet & Cheesecake with Pink Ombré Roses looks stunning and tastes divine

reCIpe: red velveT & CheeseCaKe WITh pInK oMbré roses

This modified red velvet cake with a light cheesecake layer, complete with piped pink roses, is a beautiful cake for any celebration.

This Red Velvet & Cheesecake with Pink Ombré Roses might look simple but little did I know piping the roses on the side of the cake could be so difficult, especially if one doesn’t get the right piping tip or if the consistency of the cream is not right. I had to redo a few times until I got it right.

Still, I was very happy about how the cake turned out. Adding a light cheddar cheesecake layer in the middle was one the best ideas for making this because the light, soft and slightly-salty cheddar cake made the taste so well balanced.

The red velvet cake recipe is none other than Martha Stewart’s. I’ve made this twice and it was very well received.

The cake was moist, creamy and incredibly delicious. Everyone, even my brother-in-law who doesn’t fancy cakes, said it’s very good. My mum (for whom I made the cake) loved it too and polished off her slice pretty fast!

InGredIenTsFor Red Velvet Cake(makes 2” x 8” round cake)• 285g CakeFlour,sifted• 1tbsp UnsweetenedDutch-processed Cocoa Powder• 1tsp Salt• 180g Sugar• 365ml VegetableOil• 2 LargeEggs,roomtemperature• ½tsp RedGel-pasteFoodColouring• 1tsp PureVanillaExtract• 1cup Buttermilk• 1tsp BakingSoda• 2tsp DistilledWhiteVinegar

For Cream Cheese Frosting• 340g CreamCheese• 227g UnsaltedButter,softened, room temperature • 200g-225g Confectioner’s Sugar• 1tsp PureVanillaExtract

Note: I doubled the recipe since it was a three-layer cake plus roses to pipe, but I’m posting only one portion for easier reference.

MeThodFor Red Velvet Cake1. Preheat oven to 170 degrees. Line and grease two 8” round cake pans. Whisk together cake flour, cocoa and salt.2. With an electric mixer on medium-high speed, whisk together sugar and oil until combined. Add eggs, one at a time, beating until each is incorporated, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed. Mix in food colouring and vanilla. 3. Reduce the speed to low. Add flour mixture in three batches, alternating with two additions of buttermilk, and whisking well after each. Stir together the baking soda and vinegar in a small bowl (it will foam); add mixture to the batter, and mix on medium speed for 10 sec.4. Divide the batter equally between the two cake pans. Bake, rotating tins halfway through, until a cake tester inserted in the centre comes outclean,inabout30min.

For Assembly & Cream Cheese Frosting 1. Beat butter and cream cheese with a mixer on medium-highspeeduntilfluffy,forabout2to3min. Reduce speed to low. Add sugar, one cup at a time, and then vanilla; mix until smooth.2. To assemble, place one red velvet cake as the base and spread some cream cheese frosting over. Top it with the cheddar cheese cake. Then spread some cream cheese frosting on top and lastly top it off with the second layer of red velvet.3. Ice the whole cake with a thin coat of the frosting and chill it. Once chilled, decorate as you desire. If you wish to pipe roses, try using Wilton’s 1M or 2D piping tips. Also use Wilton’s food colouring gel to tint the frosting. Remember, from the lightest to the strongest shade.

Insadong: Korean buzz & bitesNamed after a very popular tourist district in Seoul, Insadong Korea Town attempts to bring the K-buzz into Resorts World Sentosa

Insadong Korea Town’s decorations are a hotchpotch of textures, from brick-face to timbre pillars and table, copious use of the Korean flag’s colours to iconic Korean masks. The unique Korean laughing head totems also give this place a dynamic urban amusement park feeling.

As eclectic as its decorations, Insadong Korea Town offers over 200 types of dishes from traditional Korean to Korean mixed with Chinese, Japanese and Western influences. With such a diversity, hits and misses are expected.

Order at the KiOsKDon’t expect a typical dining experience. Guests order from a few kiosks at the entrance.

When the food is ready, pick them up at any of the Korean, Korean-Chinese, Japanese & Western stations within its 6,000 sq ft space.

The pay-first-pick-up-later concept isn’t new, and the trend continues to grow. However, placing your order in front of an ATM-like kiosk is novel in Singapore. Commonly used in Japan and Korea in low-cost, fast-turnaround eateries, these kiosks keep prices low.

Nevertheless, I’d imagine customers, spending easily between $20 to $40 per head, would prefer friendly service staff.

KOrean ClassiCsThe fun and casual atmosphere at Insadong is the perfect match for street fare such as Toppoki (Korean rice cakes, $6), Kimchi Pancake ($10), and Bossam (Korean Boiled Pork Wrap, $15/Small $25/Big). Although the rice cakes were tasty, the kimchi pancakes were a tad oily and soggy. The boiled pork

slices in the Bossam were dry around the edges — the type of dryness that comes from reheating pre-cooked pork.

Insadong also serves a modern Korean specialty: Watermelon Soju ($30), a powerful alcoholic beverage with an alcoholic content between 16 per cent to 45 per cent, mixed with watermelon juice, and served from a watermelon bowl. It’s a summertime drink that’s perfect any time in tropical Singapore.

KOrean-Chinese OptiOnsAn attempt at fusion food is risky. The synthesis of two great sets of flavours from different ethnicities seldom guarantees a great new dish. Insadong’s Xiao Long Bao in Kimchi Soup ($13) is an example.

I love xiao long bao and kimchi but the combination of bao floating in the diluted spiciness of the kimchi soup didn’t mix well to me.

tOp KOrean hits at insadOngEven though the previous dishes were so-so, the Ginseng Chicken Soup ($29), Beef Bulgogi Baked Rice ($15), Mushroom Beef Bulgogi Hotpot ($36; with added beef/chicken, $40) were really something to shout about.

The Ginseng Chicken Soup was tasty, and lightly “herbal” in flavour. The chicken was soft and tender, and it was nicely balanced with the broth.

The Mushroom Beef Bulgogi Hotpot with added beef was a beauty: A towering mountain of raw red beef surrounded by a plethora of mixed mushrooms on top of a bed of rice noodles simmering in a hotpot. It got even better when Oh Myoungsuk Emily, Chef of Insadong, started to mixed the Beef Bulgogi Baked Rice into the hotpot!

As she combined the two, the cheesy baked rice congealed within the hotpot, creating a thick porridge. It was beautiful and tasted wonderful.

The whole meal ended with the popular, fun-to-eat Korean J-cone Ice Cream ($6) made from corn paste, which is extruded and baked

simultaneously into a hollow J-shaped cone, then filled with soft-serve vanilla ice cream.

teething pains?Unless you live on Sentosa, going to Resorts World just for Korean food isn’t practical unless the restaurant offers something distinct. For me, Insadong is a go-to place for its Korean hotpot and baked rice combo, and the J-cone would be a nice finish.

Several weeks later, I decided to return for lunch with my family after I convinced them of how good the hotpot and J-cone were.

To my disappointment, Insadong’s hotpot was “out of stock” for lunch! I asked how this could be at noon. The staff said that they hadn’t received the ingredients from the central kitchen.

Ok, since we were there, let’s at least try the J-cone. OMG! Out of stock as well!

I suppose I’ll still return at future date, but I’d first call to ask.

If you didn’t get to see the new fashion collections on the runway, fret not – Weekender caught the action and here’s what you missed

Who said Singapore doesn’t have any creative blood? Just a couple of weeks ago, the Singapore Fashion Week (SFW) 2015 was in full swing at the Tent@Orchard, where both local and international designers came to showcase their work.

Weekender was invited to be in the thick of fashion action and here we bring you some of the highlights from the shows.

A Future in Fashion for Singapore?

To support our home-grown talent, SFW 2015 invited three Singapore designers who’ve gained international traction –

Priscilla Shunmugam of Ong Shunmugam, Sabrina Goh of Elohim and Chelsea Scott-Blackhall of Dzojchen. Alongside these local designers was Tex Saverio for Love, Bonito – a local blog shop that famously collaborated with one of the designers for the Hunger Games costumes.

At the Dzojchen and Elohim show, their latest collections went down the runway as part of the pilot edition of Fashion Futures, a programme to catapult the local fashion scene into the international market place. From what we saw, the Tex Saverio for Love, Bonito show was impressive as well.

Chic, Sleek and Flirtatious

With a pop of gold and olive here and there, the Dzojchen collection mainly had a monochrome colour palette that revolved around the sexy working lady look. Shorts,

jumpsuits, plunging V-neck and thigh-high slit skirts are pieces not usually associated with formal or working wear but this collection shows how it’s done.

It was an eye-opening spectacle on the runway. We wondered what more surprises were in store.

Perhaps Not Extraordinary EnoughElohim featured two ranges of clothing during the show. The first had a black palette with a very structured and strong feel to it. It was a very basic collection but it did play with the fabrics and structures of the outfits, which made up for the absence of prints or designs. While the second range had a brighter colour palette with reds, whites and prints, it might have looked a little too ordinary.

Who Says Men’s Fashion is Dull?

Benjamin Barker, an Australian menswear label, landed on the runway of SFW 2015 to showcase its stylish line. While the collection played with a large colour palette from pastel colours to the stronger colours like maroon and dark blue, it had fun with various fabrics as well.

Apart from just cotton, there were wool blends and velvets to spice up the collection. It certainly spiced up our night!

Singapore Fashion Week 2015 took place from May 13 to 17, and Weekender was present to witness our island being launched into fashion future.

The Xiaomi brand is going places, and we mean taking over the world with its ultra-affordable and ever-expanding line of electronic gadgets.

If you’ve not already heard of Xiaomi [Where have you been?], it’s a Chinese-based company that has gained strong international following in the past few years, for its pocket-friendly smartphones

that pack some serious features with good specifications.

In addition to Xiaomi’s ever-expanding line of electronic gadgets, it has recently introduced the Yi. Simply put, the Yi is a point of view (POV) sports camera similar to GoPro but at a fraction of the price.

Good Features & speciFicationsThe Xiaomi Yi has a 16MP, 155° wide-angle point of view (POV) camera that’s equipped with Sony’s Exmor R CMOS sensor. It has a 1010mAh battery, measuring 60.4mm x 42mm x 21.2mm and weighs just 72g, making it extremely portable.

Equipped with a 2.8f aperture lens (and the smaller the aperture value, the better it is to take photos in dim light conditions) it is more than adequate for outdoor day activities. Sadly, the Xiaomi Yi does not have any built-in memory and solely relies on a micro SD; which it supports up to 128GB.

The Xiaomi Yi has an awesome time-lapse function that allows its camera to capture changes within your environment over a period of time, by taking multiple shots and then compressing them into one image. So get ready for your Instagram “likes” to shoot through the roof as your followers are going to like your hipster images!

In terms of videos, it’s able to record in HD quality at 1080p and 60fps [frames per second; the higher the value the better the quality]. Never miss another moment or suffer from horrid video quality again!

Made For sportsThe Xiaomi Yi is made with PC-ABS materials, which means it’s rugged enough to withstand a few knocks and water splashes.

Yi is water resistant and waterproof up to 40m (with its waterproof housing), which makes it perfect for snapping pictures by the beach or during water activities like water rafting and even scuba diving.

additional Features Although it bums me out that there isn’t a built-in display on the Xiaomi Yi, its Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functions do somehow make up for it. Images or videos from the Yi can be seamlessly viewed with your smartphone and there’s even a specialised app that allows you to edit them on the spot. So whether out on a water rafting expedition or mountain climbing, the Yi’s got your back.

The Xiaomi Yi is currently available in

white and blue or yellow and green. It is still not officially available in Singapore but retails for RMB 399 on Xiaomi’s official website. With such an affordable price and awesome specifications, it’s easy to want one!
