ABOUT WATER INSTITUTE OF KARUNYA UNIVERSITY

The Water Institute - a Centre of Excellence of Karunya University came into

existence in August 2008. There are 15 scholars pursuing Ph.D. programme

at the Institute in the areas of hydrology, hydrogeology, mathematical model-

ing, water treatment, water resources engineering, coastal dynamics, climate

change, aquatic ecosystems and isotope hydrology. The Water Institute in

collaboration with the School of Civil Engineering is involved in R&D projects

funded by Ministry of Environment and Forests and Climate Change (MoEF)

&& CC) and Department of Science and Technology (DST), GoI, in the are-

as of wetland management, application of isotopes in groundwater recharge

studies, textile wastewater treatment and nanoparticle transport investiga-

tions. The Water Institute is functioning within the School of Agriculture and

Biosciences.

ABOUT KARUNYA UNIVERSITY

The Karunya University is the accomplishment of the Vision of its Found-

ers, Dr. D G S Dhinakaran of revered memory and Dr Paul Dhinakaran,

the present Chancellor. Started as an Engineering College in 1986, it at-

tained autonomous status in 2000 and became a Deemed University in

2004. The technical programmes of the University conform to AICTE

norms and it was accredited by NAAC. The University has around 8000

students residing in the campus and around 400 well qualified teaching

faculty. The University offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral pro-

grammes in almost all branches of engineering including biotechnology

and food processing and agricultural engineering. Apart from this, MBA,

MCA and other programmes in arts & science and commerce are also of-

fered. The campus of the university with about 300 ha is a bowl—like for-

mation with the Western Ghats overlooking it on all sides.

BACKGROUND, ISSUES AND CHALLENGES

Textile industries are rapidly increasing by numbers in most of the countries around the world in the recent years. There are about 9000 knitting, 736 dyeing and bleaching, 300 printing units, 100 embroidery units apart from 200 units catering to compacting, raising and calendaring in and around Kongu region. A large quantity of effluent is discharged by the units leading to the pollution of both surface and groundwater resources. The physico- chemical and biological methods of treatment consume considerable quantity of chemicals, concentrated energy intensive. These methods are not suffi-cient to break down azo double bonds of reactive dyes. Also the secondary products or sludge produced becomes more difficult to be disposed off. Huge amount of reject from Reverse Osmosis is another major problem. Viable techno-economic options available for treating the effluents containing dyes from small units. So an efficient and cost effective treatment method for tex-tile industrial effluent is required to treat the dyeing effluent coming out of the small scale industries. Main challenges existing in the treatment of textile in-dustrial effluent are: • Recycling and reuse of wastewater. • Removal of colour and reduction of total dissolved solids in the treated

effluent • Techno -economic viability in terms of capital investment and operating

costs in line with the current costs of fresh water and disposal mecha-nisms.
