Charles E. Fraser’s commitment to sustainable development was and conCnues to be acknowledged internaConally by the lodging and resort industry. His pracCces have impacted resort development and
operaCons in both beach and mountain communiCes. The conference mission is to establish an open dialogue
among pracCConers and academicians that concentrates on current sustainable resort
development issues, challenges, and resoluCons.
Thursday October 3, 2013: Welcome and RecepEon

Friday October 4, 2013: Panel Seminars
• Plenary Session: Water Quality and Land Management 8:30 am to 10 am – South Carolina has an esCmated 400,000 acres of coastal marshes and 100,000 acres of Cdal swamps. Beaufort
County and Charleston County have the greatest share of salt marshes in the state. Because the economy of the Lowcountry is heavily reliant on the health of the watershed the plenary session will include panel speakers that will discuss regions efforts toward balancing development with maintaining the health of the watershed. Beaufort County has exponenCally grown in populaCon in the last decade. Most of the development has occurred outside of Hilton Head Island. Consequently, new and current residents and developers share in the impact of that development on Beaufort County. Session speakers represenCng the golf industry, landscape architecture, and local government will share with the audience their observaCons on best pracCces.
• Session 2: Tourism with a Sustainability Mindset 10:15 am unCl 11:45 am – The tourism industry is inextricably linked to the health of its immediate environment. In the last decade various
global, naConal, and regional tourism development strategies have been implemented to miCgate tourism’s impact on its local community. For this session, a[endees will learn of best pracCces of local and naConal organizaCons that have grown the demand for their tourism product while maintaining a sustainability mindset.
• Session 3: Community Well Being 1:15 pm unCl 2:45 pm – Beaufort County conCnues to be a county in transiCon due to its development growth and demographic changes.
Consequently, the economic, social, and environment characterisCcs need to be balanced to achieve community wellbeing. Speakers will present best pracCces and challenges to maintaining community wellbeing.
• Session 4: UClizing a Data Driven Strategy to Manage Sustainability 3 pm unCl 4:15 pm – Various universiCes have been engaged in conducCng environment and sustainability research. Meet some of the
South Carolina university researchers that have ongoing research efforts that have community implicaCons. Researchers from University of South Carolina Beaufort, University of South Carolina, Clemson University, and the Sea Grant ConsorCum will share with the audience their research and its applicability to the community.
