CHIROPRACTIC IN MEDIA

Hazards of Heavy Purses

CDAHK’s handbag tips were featured in the Hong Kong Economic

Times article about the dangers of carrying a heavily stuffed purse.

CDAHK Vincent Chan recommends that one’s bag weigh no more

than 10 percent of one’s body weight. The article suggests that

women alternate which shoulder they carry the bag on from day to

day, and consider splitting their items between two bags (one for

each arm), which will pain-proof the load by distributing it more

evenly.

Each month, notable media outlets contact CDAHK for information

about chiropractic and health care topics and to set up interviews with

a doctor of chiropractic on CDAHK Public Relation Committee. We

keep a watchful eye on media portrayals of the chiropractic profession

and has been responding to both positive and negative reports in an

effort to build relationships with, and educate, the media.

Chiropractic Care is great for low back pain even

After Surgery: International Journal of Medical and Health

Sciences. Int J Med Health Sci. July 2017,Vol-6;Issue-3

ABSTRACT Herein, the author presents two cases where chiropractic techniques appear to have been successful in alleviating postlaminectomy syndrome (PLS). PLS is a condition characterized by persistent back pain or leg pain after spine surgeries. Nerves can get damaged or inflamed due to various (preexisting, intra- or postoperative) conditions, resulting in continued low back pain. These cases are notable because the precise cause of this condition remains unclear and, currently, effective strategies for patients with this painful syndrome have not been established. CONCLUSION This represents two cases of post-laminectomy syndrome where chiropractic techniques appear to have been successful in alleviating chronic back pain after surgery.

Chiropractic pain control in myelofibrosis: A case report Eric Chun-Pu Chu a, Raymond S.M. Wong b, 1 New York Medical Group, Humphrey Plaza, 4 Humphrey Avenue, Hong Kong, China 2 Sir Y.K. Pao Centre for Cancer & Department of Medicine & Therapeutics, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shatin, Hong Kong, China

Background Myelofibrosis (MF) is a rare hematological disease. Currently available therapies mainly offer symptom control with

limited curative benefits.

Case presentation A 58-year-old man old man presented with MF for several years and had undergone splenectomy and targeted

therapy with ruxolitinib. During the last 3 years of his life, he suffered from intractable bone pain that was resistant to

medical, analgesic and physical therapies. However, significant pain alleviation was achieved shortly after starting

chiropractic treatment. Patient’s condition continued to deteriorate and he died of septic complications.

Conclusions Bone and joint pain is the common symptom of cancer. This report highlights the potential benefits of integrating

chiropractic into a multidisciplinary approach to cancer care. In rare diseases like myelofibrosis, the main limitation of

this report was the lack of the related references for comparative

analysis. Further studies regarding the efficacy of chiropractic therapy

in controlling various cancer pains are needed to guide decision making.

The Chiropractic Doctors Association of Hong Kong (CDAHK) strives to

provide reliable, credible, high-quality continuing education (CPD) for

chiropractic professionals. CDAHK is a CPD provider by Hong Kong

Chiropractic Council.

CDAHK provides with "Hands first, Drug second, and Surgery last" as the key

component of patient care. To advance the professional knowledge of

most advanced technology in spinal operations, CDAHK Executive

Committees have learned with Prof Clarence Leung (Neurosurgeon) in the

surgical room, observed several common operations at the last defense of

spinal treatments, especially in minimally invasive operation to patients. It

includes minimally invasive spine surgery, artificial disc replacement,

endoscopic spine surgery, and intradiscal therapies.

Continuing Education and CPD

Dr. Clarence Leung graduated from the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom in 1994. He

completed his internship in general surgery at the Professorial Unit headed by the Emeritus

Professor D.C. Carter at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. He qualified as a specialist in

Neurosurgery in 2003 after completing his Neurosurgical residency at the University Hospital of

the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Following his residency, he completed a one-year Complex Spine Fellowship under the world

renowned Professor Alan H. Crockard at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery

at the University of London.

Upon his return to Hong Kong, he became the head of the team for spinal surgery for the

Division of Neurosurgery at the Prince of Wales Hospital and the Deputy Head of Division of

Neurosurgery at the North District Hospital. He moved to private practice in 2006 and continued

serving as the Honorary Clinical Assistant Professor in Neurosurgery at the Chinese University of

Hong Kong. At present, he is the Clinical Director of the Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Center

at the Hong Kong Adventist Hospital.

CDAHK FELLOWSHIP CDAHK FELLOWSHIP: CDAHK connects our members through e-newsletter publication that relevant news and

information. The chiropractic profession, along with opportunities for members to become more engaged with CDA

through education, advocacy, networking, specialty groups and volunteerism. There comes a time in their career when every employee chiropractor would feel it is time to cut the ties and start his or

her own practice. However, starting from the ground up is seldom as simple as renting a vacant space, moving in,

hanging out one’s shingle and initially attracting a sufficient number of patients to make it pay.

To ensure success in going solo, it must be a well thought-out, well-planned and well-executed

undertaking. Dr George Huang (CDAHK member) shared about the starting point for venturing out

on his own is an organized assessment of a particular situation, experience, chiropractic education,

specialties, and financial situation, including how long you can survive with a minimum income. Dr

Albert Leung (Founding President) shared about a complete self introspection of why you want to do

this is a must and, perhaps, more important. Dr Vincent Chan (Founding Chairman) shared about the

new doctor must be positive about their objectives, the experience and talent they bring to the

venture, and the expectation has to be is realistic. Dr Eric Chu (Chairman) shared his start up was

tough. He took a crash course in accounting and business management would was vitally important.

Dr Rick Lau (Educataion Committee) described that perseverance and patience were required. It

was also depends on the new doctor, the location he choose and the underserviced market for his

services in that area. Still, every business and every chiropractor started with only an idea or a dream.

Dr Chu finally concluded that the law of probability is on the new generation’s side. CDAHK believes

in the new generation can do the same.
