ACADEMIC WRITING FOR PUBLISHING PURPOSES
Conceptual framework, course objectives & structure
Why write?
2
What does writing have to do with scholarship?
Writing and Publishing
When you publish, you are engaging in a conversation.
Common “slogans” in the academic world:
Publish or perish!What is not published does not exist!
To publish in English, means engaging in dialogue with the international community.
CriticalPragmaticApproach
“[It] encourages students to assess their options in particular situations rather than assuming they must fulfil expectations. After considering options, they may choose to carry out demands or challenge them.” (Benesch, 2001 as quoted in Harwood and Hadley, 2004)
Critical Pragmatic
(Flowerdew; Curry & Lillis;
Hanauer & Englander)
Pragmatic (Day & Gastel;
Cargill & O’Connor)
