Electromagnets That Get the Job Done
Look at an electromagnet at work
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yhNOXQkMpY
Background Information
• A local recycling center wants you to develop an electromagnet that will help them at their recycling plant. Your electromagnet needs to hold at least 50 metal scraps, AKA, washers and place them into the “dump truck”.
Prior Knowledge
• You met with a team of engineers and discussed variable changes for electromagnets. Use any and all ideas to create an electromagnet that will meet the challenge.
Team Preparation• Choose team roles:
– Leader: Make sure each team member contributes ideas; Communicates with the foreman
– Materials Manager: Gets supplies; don’t be afraid to ask for help
– Recorder: Keep track of plan and data; prepare to share with teammates;
– Reporter: Shares findings with classmates

Time Management
• You have 3 days to accomplish this task• A Wisdom Walk will be held during the
last 15 minutes of class on Friday for each team to share their design.
What I Learned From Others:Team Materials used Observations # W1 2 b 2 bolts wrap with 80cm coil Very weak
attraction15 g
2 2 b 1 big bolt with 300 cm wire switch Only wrapped 42 wraps, more could have helped
7g
3 1 medium bolt wrapped around a chair leg with 300 cm of wire switch
Not working
4 2 b 2 bolts wrapped in 80 cm wrapped in middle of bolt
Great job! the washers looked like the letter u
85g
5 4 b used Mr. Danny’s desk handle and a switch
again washers like a letter u
48g
6 2 b 1 bolt wrapped with 1,213 cm wire Too much wire 19g
What I Learned From Others:Team Materials used Observations # W1 4b, 4bh, 1 300cmw 3 80cmw, 2 bolts 65g
2 4b, 4bh, 1s, 1sbolt, 30wraps, 80cmw, 2bolts
Circuit kept coming apart
3 4b, 4bh, 2 bolts, 380cmw Washers went into a U shape

4 4b, 4bh, 2bolts, 80cmw No switch 20g
5 4b, 4bh, 2 big bolts, 300cmw, switch Wire is disconnecting

6 2 rusty bolts, 4b, 4bh, 300cmw 43g
What I Learned From Others:Team Materials used Observations # W1 300 cm w wrapped on 2 bolts, 2b Not all of wire
wrapped on bolts
14 g
2 300 cm w around desk handle, 4b Washers held on side
40 g
3 300 cm w wrapped on 2 bolts, 2b, wire wrapped near center of bolts
Stronger when on for more time
33 g
4 80 cm w wrapped with no overlaps, 2b Even wrapping 33 g
5 80 cm w, 2 bolts, 2b 1 cm spacing between wraps

6 300 cm w wrapped on 2 bolts, switch, 2b
Overlapped wrapping
