Etowah 4-H Cooks A Food Demonstration Event Have you ever imagined that you were a famous chef? You wow your television audience with your amazing dishes! Chef 4-H is almost like that. What You Will Learn You will get to try new and tasty dishes. Chef 4-H will make you a better cook. You will learn to make good food choices. You make shopping lists and food menus. You show how well you work in the kitchen. You learn cooking skills. You teach others. The Rules Provide Nutritional Information Provide information about your dish. That should include protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals. Also include the amount of fat and cholesterol. Base your information on what is needed for someone eating 2,000 calories per day. www.choosemyplate.gov has lots of good information. The Meat Group also includes beans, eggs, and nuts. Your presentation and your teaching skill are important. The time limit is five to ten minutes. Prepare your dish in front of a live audience. Also have one already cooked to display. Serve a sample to the judges. Bring all your supplies and equipment. Include what you need to serve judges. Create your own visual aids. These can be things like posters or flash cards. You may not use PowerPoint, slides or video. Do not use or display Brand names (like Crisco or Cheerios)… Be ready to measure either a liquid or dry ingredient. Provide a copy of your recipe to the judges including: The name of your dish. Primary Food Group. A list of ingredients in the order they are used. Exact measurements of ingredients. Directions for making the dish How many servings the dish makes. Time of normal preparation, including cooking time. Nutritional information. NO LOCAL CONTEST! 4-H Competitions FREESTYLE DEMONSTRATION

THE RULES!

Compete by yourself or on a two-person team. Youth on teams should be the same 4-H age level (e.g,. Junior, Sr. Level I

or Sr. Level II).

The demonstration area is indoors and limited to an 8-foot by 8-foot area.

Follow the 4-H Dress Code.

No live animals or endangered or threatened plants.

If you use equipment, know how to operate it safely.

If you plan to use open flames, chemicals, power tools, sharp objects (knives, saws, clippers, fish hooks, etc.), firearms, or

ATV’s in your demonstration, follow the Risk Management Guidelines.

Junior and Senior demonstrations should be 5-10 minutes. No more than 5 minutes for set up. Set up time and answer pe-

riod are NOT included in the 5-10 minutes demonstration limits.

You may use notes, but don’t read from them.

Even facilitators will supply one table and one easel. You must supply anything else.

PowerPoint presentations, slides, and videos are okay to use, but must be provided by the presenter and should not replace

your speaking to the audience.

Cover or remove any visible brand name labels.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT A TALENT SHOW! The purpose of this contest is to teach the judges/audience how to

do something. If you have a talent that you wish to turn into a demonstration, but aren’t sure how, please contact the

Etowah County Extension Office so we can help you. Just getting up and singing a song or showing off a talent will dis-

qualify you!

HEALTHY LIVING FOR LIFE—SENIOR I AND II MEMBERS

THE RULES!

Competition begins at the county level; this is not a local club contest. It will be held during the Etowah County Baked

Foods Contest Saturday, February 11th at 8 a.m. Deadline to sign up is February 3rd.

Choose some topic about food, nutrition, and health.

Teach people about that topic.

You can work alone or in a two-person team

Exhibits must fit on a table 6 feet long and 3 feet deep. Your exhibit may not be taller than 36

inches. Do not put any thing on the wall.

Your work must be your own. You can use a computer to make charts or pictures.

What you say must be correct. Tell where you got your information.

Provide a handout about your subject.

Nothing that moves is allowed. You can’t use sound or lights.

Be ready to answer judges’ questions. Dress nicely.

You have to set up your exhibit without too much adult help.

Identify your exhibit as 4-H. Your audience should know you are a 4-H member. You might want to use a 4-H table cloth

or display the 4-H flag.

Cover trade names so that you are not promoting a specific brand.

Public Speaking and Freestyle Showcase

The County Public Speaking and Have I Got a Story Contest will be

Thursday, January 19th beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Extension

office. The County Freestyle Showcase Contest will begin at 5:30 p.m. of the same day. Any 4-H member is eligible to come and participate, there is no local elimination for these two contests. For guidelines, go to: www.alabama4h.com, look under “contests”. For questions, please call the Extension office, 256-547-7936. In order to ensure enough judges are

present, you must register by January 12th with the Extension Of-

fice.

Baked Foods

If you placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place in your local Baked Foods contest you advance to the county contest. Guidelines are in the club winner letter and at www.aces.com/etowah. The Baked Foods contest will be

held Saturday, February 11 at 8 a.m. at the Rainbow City Commu-

nity Center. Please contact the Etowah County Extension Office at 256-

547-7936 to sign up. Deadline to sign up is February 3rd.

4-H WILDLIFE HABITAT PROJECTS

We will offer two projects for 2017: Spring/Summer Plot for

Wildlife namely birds (browntop millet, sunflowers, corn,

etc.). Fall with an emphasis on deer (clover, greens, etc.)

There will be a fee for the seed. Please contact Michael at 256

-613-1247 by February 8th if interested in participating.
