Step In TimeOn the morning of Monday January 27th,I went along to Cromer Library to watch, listen and learn from both Fiona Daviesand Tony Rogers all about the localshermens Step Dancing.

I recall, many years ago now, watching, both Fiona and her late dad Richardstep dancing in the pub in Cromernext to the railway station, called Buddies.

It was, despite the number of pints enjoyed,a brilliant evening and left me feelingvery impressed by their dancing.

Numerous photographs were on display, supplied by Cromer Museum, of thedancing in local pubs and in Suffolkas well as several short lms of stepdancers, it looks easier than it is.

After an informative talk by Fiona, whohas been doing the steps since she wasa child, there were dance routines from

both Fiona and Chris Gills, who knewall the routines / steps, as both of themare regular dancers.

After some time, while the Library waspreparing itself for the afternoon, everyone was encouraged to havea go under the helpful guidance

    of Fiona and Chris.

So. Yes, I do get my shoes andmy boots repaired by the manhimself and our keys cut.

10 C, I dream of temperatures, much higher than this and quitea lot warmer than this as well.

I am sure Im not alone in thisand with a sailing boat mooredat Catford Dyke, I sometimeswonder whether I will ever useit again this summer or simplyjust pay for the mooring?

I do feel sorry for those furthersouth from us being ooded butthis wind & rain is getting veryboring for all of us, whereverwe live in the UK.

I did go out to the boat a few weeksago, and all I felt was freezing cold.Hopefully by the time you readthis it will be much warmer, &greatly brighter with a lot moresun than we have been havingin recent weeks.

Dear Editor,I am writing to you regarding the proposedcuts to the Environment Agency - the peoplewho deal with protecting North Norfolk andother coasts from ooding.

Earlier this month I criticised the governmentsproposals which would see 1,500 jobs gofrom the organisation.

Now we know that because of budget cutsthe Environment Agency is considering

sacricing parts of the coast to the sea.Cost cutting measures would allow the seato come further in-land in Cley, Salthouse,

    Dear Editor,

It seems staggering that Januarys cabinetmeeting at the NNDC has been cancelleddue to a lack of business .

Individuals in the Tory administration havesaid privately that much of the key decisionmaking at the council goes on in thesemeetings, so Im surprised they havefound nothing to talk about at suchan important time.

Whats worse is that the administrationexplained on Twitter the decision wasmade in the middle of December -seemingly days after the oods hit

the coastal areas of our district. What sort of message does this send out

and Blakeney. This wasnt what residentsasked for when they were calling for helpfrom government after the oodsin December.

The people living on the coast of Norfolkneed to see the damaged ood defencesreinstated & improved. I fear that by notreinstating defences other towns andvillages will be at risk too.

    Yours Sincerely,

    Denise Burke

The 18th CamelThere was a father who left 17 camels as anasset for his three sons.

When the father passed away, his sonsopened up the Will.

The Will of the father stated that the eldest sonshould get 1/2 (half) of total camels while themiddle son should be given 1/3rd (one-third)and the youngest son should be given 1/9th

(one-ninth) of the total camels. As it was not possible to divide 17 into halfor 17 by 3 or 17 by 9, the three sons neededassistance to gure this out.

So, the three sons decided to go to a wise man.

The wise man read the Will patiently.

The wise man, after giving due thought, brought one camel of his own andadded the same to 17.

That increased the total to 18 camels.

Now, he started reading the deceasedfathers Will.

    Half of 18 = 9.

So he gave the eldest son 9 camels1/3rd of 18 = 6.So he gave the middle son 6 camels

    1/9th of 18 = 2.So he gave the youngest son 2 camels.

Now add this up: 9 plus 6 plus 2 is 17 andthis leaves one camel, which the wise mantook back!

    Moral:

The attitude of negotiation and problemsolving is to nd the 18th camel i.e. thecommon ground.

Once a person is able to nd the 18th camel

the issue is resolved. It is difcult at times. However, to reach a solution, the rst stepis to believe that there is a solution.

If we think that there is no solution,we wont be able to reach any!

Continued From Front PageMusic was on hand to help everyone get intothe rythm of the steps. It is certainly a lovelydance to watch and one that I can see quite alot of good folk getting into it as a hobby.

With local people such as Fiona, Chris andTony it is not a dance that will be easilyforgotten by anyone who goes along tosee their routines.

I was impressed by how many people, at theend of the session, got up and had a go, with

I would suggest a great deal of success.

Well they really did look asthough they had picked it uppretty well.

Even though I knew I was infor a treat, I had no idea justhow much I would enjoy thecouple of hours I was there.

This is the rst time I hadever been to any of themany events held in theCromer Library and itwill denitely not bethe last.

Readers are encouraged to lookat our listings on the SpecialEvents pages as all of ourlocal Libraries have manyinteresting events duringthe next two months.

Thank you to Fiona Davies andeveryone else involved withthis event. It was great. PK

Norfolk RiversTrust. On Saturday January 25th, along with severalhundred others, I went to see the Open Dayin Mundesley Coronation Hall, just 80 yardsfrom our front door.

Running from 10am to 4pm, it was not onlyinteresting, but very informative to everyonewho turned out to see rstof all just wherethe River MUN runs, what was in it andwhat kind of work was being done to

save and help the future of this small, but important river that runs fromjust South of Northrepps to thesea in Mundesley.

I have to admit that I know where the river isbut have never heard its name before.

After asking Jonathan Lewis, the CatchmentBased Approach Ofcer, who was headingthis interesting day, to send me some photosof the event and he also agreed to answersome of my questions.

Jonathan rstly thank you for the photos andthank you for answering my questions:

    Firstly:

It has been so far a very popular day in

the Coronation Hall in Mundesley.Do you feel you have achievedwhat you set out to do?

Our aim for this event was to generateinterest in the river, educate peopleabout the issues the river faces andalso inspire people to get involved.

Weve certainly met & exceeded our aims asweve had a fantastic response from localswho have shown a genuine interest in theRiver Mun, including a large number ofpeople who have volunteered their timeto help us with future projects.

What needs to be done with the long termfuture of this river and how can people

local or otherwise, help theNorfolk Rivers Trust?

Local involvement in the River Mun is vitalto protect it in the long term.

We need local people to help us with a rangeof work including monitor changes in the riverand to get involved with conservation worksuch as removing invasive species.

Now weve formed a database of localvolunteers, we will be focusing onorganising future work and projects.

Its not to late to sign up for our volunteerprojects, just email Jonathan at NorfolkRivers Trust.

if you feel the urge toboo the baddies, thenno one will mind.

    Oh no they wont.

On Thursday 23rd January, I attended thisPublic MeetingHeating Or Eating ShouldEnergy Companies Be Renationalised?

Having published details in the Crab Talesissue (028) advertising this meeting, whichwas held at the Community Hall in NorthWalsham, I decided to go along andnd out what was all going on.

I am very glad I did attend the meeting, run byEd Baberof the North Norfolk Trade Councilwith (From left) Joe Rust from the LabourParty, Alicia Hull Green Party and MaryLittlefeld, as Vice Chair of the

Norfolk Peoples Assembly. Both the Tories and the Lib Dems were invited, but neither attended, which surely does little todefend their approach to this problem.

Each of the three invited guests spoke conciselyon the concept of Re-Nationalising all theenergy companies that we have supplyingtheir services to us.This was followed by questions from the publicwho numbered around 30 people, and all thespeakers gave clear answers to the problemsraised by those in the audience.

What came out of the meeting was that the vastmajority were against the privatisation of theseservice companies and how supportive theywere of re-nationalising everything we

call good companies. These now private companies are leading thepresent government down the garden path toachieve vast prots and also vast salaries forall their directors. At the expense of theirusers, you and I.

With little more than offering their directorsboth their salaries and bonuses the idea ofnationalising these businesses certainlyholds great appeal to everybody I knowand those attending the meeting.

After a little more than an hour the speakerswere all able to answer all the questionsraised during the debate, before thisinteresting meeting closed.

Is it possible to nationalise these businesses

again the answer must surely be a deniteYES. Philip Keddell

daily use, and customers coming to us notjust locally, but from across the UK for ourengraving service, especially our engravedceremonial spades (more about thoseanother time!)

What we didnt have however was the spaceto use the machines as efciently as wed haveliked so when the shop next door became avail-able during the summer, we immediately tookon the lease and so the process began ofcombining the two shops into one.

This proved more complicated than planned, but the builders did a great job putting inthe opening between the two premises, and it was worth the effort.

Now the carpenter has fnished building allthe amazing new counters, we can really seethe layout of the new shop coming together.

Hopefully by the end of February we shouldhave all the nal little details completed &be fully up & running.

For the rst time, rather than being hiddenout of sight, all the engraving machines areon the shop oor, and by being able to seewhat we are doing, customers will not justget a better feel for the range of engraving

we undertake, but possibly even see theirengraving being done on the state of theart machines.

Bucking The TrendAgainst the backdrop of difcult nancialtimes, one of Cromers local businessesis bucking the trend and embarking onambitious expansion plans.

Cromer Trophies & Engraving Ltd have beenestablished since 1994, and have steadily grownsince then, moving to their current premisesin 2001.

Company Director Steven Burbidge takes up

the story. When we moved to our currentpremises in 2001, the space seemed enormousit felt like we had all the room wed ever need.

However, this all started to change as earlyas 2002. This was when we purchased ourrst computerised engraving machine.

Suddenly we had the capability to engravealmost anything, in any font, and also todo logos, images and more.

This was a massive step forward for us previously all our engraving had beendone with a manual machine where allthe engraving (wording only) was setup with lines of individual brass letters, all loaded one at a time.

Fast forward to mid-2013 and we had fourcomputerised machines, all pretty much in

All our other services will continue as before, from key cutting to traditional shoe repairs, plus the full range of trophy sales, glassware, pewter gifts, and more.

Why not visit the new shop in CromersWest Street and see for yourself what thissuccessful local business can do for you, whether you just need a new front doorkey cut, your favourite shoes repaired,or perhaps you too would like anengraved ceremonial spade?

The shocked patient shouts: "What the hell, howcan there possibly be any good news"

effects nor processors?Quote -Like anamphetamined, malfunctioning Dalek.

To support a front man like Wilko you needthe strongest foundation backing and, yep, itsthere in the form of Monti his power-housedrummer (at that time) & the truly amazing,body-contorting, long- ngered Norman Watt-Roy on bass - both, also, ex Ian Drury Block-head members who complement this 3-pieceas tight as extraneous limbs afxed toMr Johnsons body. Surely theyvegotta be cerebrally midid-up viaa common time signature?

As I remember his self-penned set includedBarbed Wire Blues; Shes Good Like That;Sneaking Suspicion; Back In The Night; She Does It Right; Dr Dupree; etc, etc.

I headed this original piece: A view of thelocal music scene by Mikkki Rokk.Heavyon adjectives, light on good taste.

    What changes?

Anyone inspired by this squit to seeThe Wilko Johnson Band- very sadlyit may be your last opportunity - theyare due to play the Waterfront againon 1st March - as early as 14.00 -Im led to believe.

    Micky P, Trimingham-upon-Sea.

This picture was taken taken and donated by Photographer Chris Gill of Cromer when theWilko Johnson Band appeared on the Pier, courtesy Scott But ler.

The picture wasnt posed for but was an actual action-shot during one of their songs.

    To John PeterWilkinson...

Man, it makes you feel youre alive to betold youre going to die. How many yearsago did I last feel like that? The ecstasy

of youth, the joy of existence.I have felt like that again.

Well, Im now back from the Skeggy ButlinsBlues and Rock Festival or, as far as I amconcerned, The Wilko Johnson Festival.

This amazing Estuarian Essex Guy who, on25th January 2013 - now suffering terminalpancreatic cancer - told John Wilson in aninterview on Radio 4 that hed been given9, possibly 10, months to live.

He turned down chemo yet, instead, embarkedon a farewell tour with his other two bandmembers - Norman Watt-Roy and DylanHowe. He survived the rst farewell tour -hes now on a second...

That brings us to the weekend just passed when,a year-&-a-day since this shock announcement,he performed TWO separate sets in twodifferent venues, during the sameafternoon, at the Butlins festival.

    ...Pause for emotion...

What a trooper! his playing, as always, wasimpeccable - he perhaps didnt strut roundwith quite the staccato jerkiness during thesolos that he would have in his primebut please bear in mind hed already beendead for two or three months, come thisdouble gig, so please grant him that.He did, nonetheless, move to almost the fullextent of the stage acreage during his guitar

breaks - for which he received a rousing cheereach time from the thousands in the mesmerisedaudience - but also machine gunned the crowdmore than adequately with his trusty, stuttering 1974 Fender Telecaster.

The one difference I DID note, compared tohis past performances - he smiled...he smileda lot! He was so obviously overwhelmed bythe welcome and response he received.

I have been most fortunate in experiencingnumerous privileges, along the way, so far

    - many in the company of good muso friends, named & unnamed - but the Sundayafternoon, 26th January, 2014 (13.00 hrs& 16.00 hrs), rates pretty damn closeto the top of the list.

Over the course of the weekend my festivalcompanion Dave and I watched numeroustop-rated artistes and bands who playedfaultlessly - maybe TOO faultlessly at times,to the expense of spontaneity & personality -but the Wilko Johnson Band was a breathof pure, fresh, oxygen-rich North Sea air.

    Who said Canvey Island air?

Lest we forget the other two band members, let me heap justiable praise on drummer Dylanand bassist Norman who matched-up to theirleaders talents. Top form, Guys.

A throw-away remark by the aforementionedDave - at the close of the show -

Norman Watt-Roy may not be the bestbass player in the World but he doesrate amongst the top ONE,

Permit me, if you will, to turn the clock orcalendar back to when Wilko was enjoyingbetter health and I wrote this review for theCrab Line, following his appearance withJohn Otway and the Hamsters in theirMad, Bad and Dangeroustour, at

the Norwich Waterfront....But now - the man of the moment who I hadbeen eagerly waiting to see again since his July

Arts Centre gig, viz. Wilko Johnson, who manymay remember from his Dr Feelgood days.Baldness has now succeeded his thick,pudding-basin coiffure of the 70s.

His act is still fresh; still elementary raw feralrock/blues; still basic chord progression stingingguitar breaks; still stabbing staccato drivingchords and licks that wont allow you to staystill for a second.

A man of few words, he counts the nextnumber in across the outro of the previousone and he still lurches menacingly with

wide-staring, psycho-eyes across the stageas he snaps out the solos and riffs from hissweat-smeared red and black Tele, withits rusting ttings.

From time-to-time he machine guns theappreciative punters from the hip with hisself-same electric axe via a Fender TwinReverb amp yet, I feel sure, with neither

One Year LaterIt seems to have gone in minutes not thestandard 365 days in the calendar.

It doesnt seem like a full year since Derekand Liz Bowler took on the Village Cafe, this local and friendly place in the super

village of Mundesley, right next door to theplant shop in the centre of the village.

Derek & Liz, who live in Trimingham, enjoyrunning this happy and friendly cafe with thehelp of Liz daughter Ros and a great team of

staff, which includes Elaine (on left) whoputs a smile on the customers faces with hersandwiches. Likewise, Lisa is very capableand helpful, keeping everyone happy.

The cafe thanks everyone who has to date, used the place and would suggest that ifyou have not been there, it is indeed timeyou popped in.

During the weekends, they are helped to runthe place, by Danny, and at last someone fromthe village, Natalie, who always makes thecustomers very welcome here.

With the weather as it is, Liz and Derek arereally looking forward to better weather inthe not too distant future.

As Derek put: We enjoy running the place, and meeting such friendly customers andhaving such a great team to help us. PK.

I Would Like To........share a personal experience with my friendsabout drinking and driving.

This is a rst for me, as I normally dont preachto others.

As you may know some of us have been knownto have brushes with the authorities from timeto time on the way home after a "social session"out with friends.

Well, two days ago I was out for an evening withfriends and had several cocktails followed bysome rather nice red wine.

Feeling jolly I still had the sense to know thatI may be slightly over the limit.

That's when I did something that I've neverdone before - I took a cab home.

Sure enough on the way home there wasa police road block, but since it was a cabthey waved it past and I arrived home

safely without incident. This was a real surprise as I had neverdriven a cab before.

I don't know where I got it and nowthat it's in my garage, I don't knowwhat to do with it.

Thanks to David Thorne for this

Powers of Attorneyby Anna Lloyd Chartered Legal Executiveswith Hayes + Storr

Q:A Power of Attorney What is it?

A:A power of attorney is a document wherebyI (the donor) appoint you (the attorney) as my

agent to deal with matters (usually nancial) onmy behalf. The document has to follow a presetformat & can take one of several forms, depend-ing on the type of power of attorney required.

Q:What is an Ordinary Power of Attorney?

A:An Ordinary Power of Attorney is effectivefrom the moment it is signed and witnessed. The attorney can deal with nancial matters only, and only so far as authorised by the donor.Once the donor ceases to have mental capacityso as to be able to decision make, the OrdinaryPower of Attorney fails.

Q What is an Enduring Power of Attorney?

A:As it became clear that, with an increasinglyageing population, the need for a power of attorneywhich carried on into mental incapacity was

needed, the Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA)was created, by statute. However, since Oct. 2007 it is no longer possibleto enter into an EPA, but those created beforethat date are still valid.

EPAs work in stages, whilst the donor retainscapacity, he decision makes & the attorney carriesout the action. Once the donors capacity failsso that he can no longer understand to makedecisions, the attorney is obliged to register theEPA with the Ofce of the Public Guardian.Notice of the proposed registration must begiven to the donor and a minimum of threerelatives, as detailed by statute. During theregistration process, which can take at least6 weeks, the attorneys powers are limited.

Once the EPA has been registered, the attorneycan decision make, but taking into account whathe knows his donor would be likely to do in thegiven situation, and then carry out the transaction.

Q:What is a Lasting Power of Attorney?

A:Since October 2007, the replacement for theEPA has been the Lasting Power of Attorney(LPA). It is a more long winded & bureaucraticdocument than its predecessor, the intention beingto try and prevent fraud. Inevitably it is alsomore expensive.

The LPA cannot be used until it has been signedby both the donor & attorney and then registeredwith the Ofce of the Public Guardian. LPAs can

be granted either in connection with nancialmatters or personal welfare matters. There is a

registration fee of 110 per LPA, although thiscan be waived/exempted sometimes.Finance & personal welfare cannot be combinedinto one LPA document so that if the donorwishes to appoint an attorney in connectionwith both aspects, then two separate LPAshave to be entered into, and this incurstwo registration fees.

The registrationprocess then takesat least six weeksassuming theOfce of the PublicGuardian acceptsthe documents.

The nancial LPAcan then be usedby the attorney, ifrequired, even ifthe donor still hascapacity but thepersonal welfareLPA cannot be used by the attorney untilthe donor is incapable of making therelevant decision.

Q:If there is a Power of Attorney in place, whoowns the assets?

A:What is frequently misunderstood is thatwhatever the type of power of attorney theassets always remain those of the donor, even if he has lost capacity and the

attorney is decision making.Q:Can an attorney make a Will on the donorsbehalf?

A:No, the attorney cannot make a Will fora donor, should they be unable to do so forthemselves. If a Will is needed or has to beupdated, it has to be made by the Court.

Q:Can an Attorney make a gift on the donorsbehalf?

A:The power of gifting is limited to relativelyminor charitable gifts & to friends & family onlyfor seasonal presents. Trying to make larger giftsor tax plan is not possible and any attempts to do so can be set aside. Such things can only be donewith a Court order. The fact that any donee mightbe an eventual beneciary under any Will is

irrelevant whilst the donor is still alive.Q:What happens if an individual loses mentalcapacity and there is no EPA or LPA in place?

A:If there is no EPA or LPA in place, and anindividual loses mental capacity, then in orderfor someone to handle nances or personal wel-fare decisions on their behalf, an applicationhas to be made to the Court of Protection.

Look out for information on The Courtof Protection which will be covered ina future article.

Storm Surge CostsRepairing the damage caused by the Tidal Surgeof 5/6 December 2013 will cost North NorfolkDistrict Council (NNDC) around 3m says areport published earlier this month.

The report has been written to inform MPs, theGovernment & other interested stakeholders ofthe devastating impact of the storm and pointout the vulnerability of coastal communities.

It also stresses the importance of soundemergency planning and emphasises theresilience of the communities affected.

Initial estimates listed in the report put thetotal cost to the council at around 3m with, potentially, 1.6m of this being recoverablefrom insurers.

Where possible the council will apply to centralgovernment Bellwin Scheme for reimbursementhowever it is understood that repairing essentialinfrastructure such as sea defences, promenades& associated structures such as railings, lighting, paths, steps and ramps is not covered.

The NNDC are therefore seeking centralgovernment support through whatevermechanism to help cover the costsand provide future security.

Amongst much else the report states that duringthe course of the surge 665 metres of council-managed sea defence was damaged, along with3,000 metres of promenade and other seafrontinfrastructure and 100 Cromer sea-front chalets.

During the recovery 40 tonnes of wasteand damaged property was removedfrom Walcott and Bacton.

Most of the damage to council-owned

property took place in Sheringham,East and West Runton, Cromer,Overstrand, Mundesley,Bacton and Walcott.
