Another Great Show!On the lovely day of Sunday 3rd August, Lis and I drove over to visit the Smallholders Show at Sheringham Park. An event that we have already enjoyed for the last couple of years on the trott.The livestock all appear to be inexcellent good condition and the events featuring so many dogs and their owners are always a delight to watch.

Yes it is Cromer Carnival time yet again which, whatever the weather,is an event enjoyed by everyone whether they are helping to pull it all off or as a jolly spectator.It is also that time of year when the roads & streets start to fill up with visitors, locals & their cars (all looking to park somewhere)while they come to take part inall the numerous events that are part of the Cromer Carnival. This year in its 45th year. The Carnival can and does still pull in hundreds of visitors to Cromer every year.As always I will be out & about snapping away at people having fun and taking part.I take my hat off to all those whoorganise all the events that make the Carnival weeks so much funfor everyone, particularly people like Tony Shipp & Dave Roberts (aka Hubba) who, along with somany others do so much to makethese events so very popular and great fun for everyone involved.I would also like to thank all ofthose who are involved with theCarnival Royal Party, who areasked to do so much over the Carnival Week plus numerous other times during the year and do it all so brightly.Whatever you do during this 45th Carnival do please read the rules

Dear Editor,I have been laughing all morning at your unanswered question: ........why was this ever called the Great War? With so many good folks being killed for our freedom.What has always puzzled me about the so-called Great War are those newsreels from the period showing the doomed troops frantically waving their hankies from trains and smiling excitedly at the cameras. I have really enjoyed taking the class and hope they will all continue to keep at it. Mundesley is well supplied with keep fit opportunities at the moment with Gill and her Extend class and Donna with aerobics, yoga, pilates and zumba! all held in the Church Rooms. A small correction Philip, Annamarie (see Crabline article Jan18 2014) is not taking over my class but starting a completely new Fitness League group in the Coronation Hall in September. These three ladies mentioned above who areinstructing these classes are all professional people, trained in helping all of us to reach our highest potential, whatever age or standard we start at. Dear Philip,Speaking as a regular summer visitor to Cromerfor the last thirty years or so, I was surprised (and disappointed) at the deserted nature of North Lodge Park when we were in North Norfolk a couple of weeks ago. No bowls nor putting and also the caf was closed. We have played on the putting green many times and it was always pleasant, when the sun was shining, to sit next to the boating lake and enjoy a cup of tea from the caf, particularly as the gardens are sheltered from any breeze that blows off the sea. I understand that the current situation is due tothe on-going transfer of responsibility for NorthLodge Park from North Norfolk District Council to Crower Town Council. Surely it would have been possible for arrangements to have been put in place so that the facilities in the park that holidaymakers expect could still have been available for 2014? Almost 140,000 has been received or pledged, leaving only a little over 10,000 to find and the campaign is working hard to ensure that construction can begin later this year.Cromer lacks a top class facility for its young people, the skate park promises to be a huge asset and will make Cromer a more attractive destination for those in search of holidays with something to offer to everyone.In recent weeks, the momentum has been maintained by support from many very different sources.Norfolk Homes generously contributed 1,000to the cause, taking advantage of the campaignsnew Just Giving facility to donate online. Their Village Fete was officially opened on Saturday 2nd August by the magical Roy Davenport and the day kicked off with Roy giving his usual bright routines of magic (Above & Below right)Some of the delights included Traditional games such as Whack the Rat, Bowling for the Pig as well as a Coconut Shy.

As well as Roys magic there was an array of the wonderful owls & birds of prey from Fens Falconry giving a great display.Sadly neither Lis nor I could get there on the day so I would like to take the opportunity to thank very much Eduardo Garcia for sending us these photos.By all accounts it was a great day and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. This was the Norfolk Smallholders eighth Annual Show at Sheringham Park and had everything to do with smallholding, self sufficiency and traditional crafts.

Alongside the numerous stands with homeproduced Norfolk food and goods, there were exhibitions, demonstrations, sheep shearing and a Birds of Prey display.The fun dog show was really popular with all kinds of games for all types of dogs and the livestock included everything from Lamas to Chickens.There was a members poultry exhibition, where we voted for our favourite chicken but we couldnt work out why this lonely duck was amongst them!

With a large crowd of people of all ages enjoying themselves, we had a lunch of delicious Burgers, finished off with ice cream, while we listened to some very good local musicians.The variety of lunches available are always very tasty and worth getting as soon as you arrive and like the vast majority, we came away with a number of delights to fill the tummies a few times over.I would recommended our readers to watch out for the dates of next years show in the Crab Tales.

My Missus..................bought a paperback last Saturday,

so I looked inside the bag, twas "Fifty Shades of Grey"

Well I just left her to it and went off up to bed.An hour later, she appeared, Oh the sight

filled me with dread! In her hand she held a rope, the other,

held a whip! She brandished them around a bit and then

began to strip.Well 40 years or so, ago, I might have

had a peekBut Doris hasnt weathered well,

shes 68 next week.Watching Doris bump and grind couldnt

be much grimmerAnd things progressed from bad to worse,

she toppled off her Zimmer !She struggled back up to her feet, a good half hour later, put her teeth back in and

said that I must dominate her !!!Now if you knew our Doris, see, youd know

just why I cringed.

Id been two months in traction, cos my hips and knees unhinged.

She stood there nude. All naked, like, bent forward quite a bit.

and jumping back in fright, I went and stood on her left tit.

Doris screamed, her teeth shot out, my word. What HAD I done ?

She moaned and groaned then shouted out"Step on the OTHER one !!!"

Well reader, I can tell no more about what occurred that day.

Suffice to say, my dark brown hair, turned fifty shades of grey.

Black and blue, battered too, with wanton, wild perversion,

We decided that a night of sin was scarce worth such exertion.

Thank Heavens she has binned the book and peace reigns, like before.

Shes head to toe in winceyette and back to back, we snore...

What Can You Say?Other than a brilliant night out in Mundesley.On Tuesday July 29th, along with Judy Peters from Trimingham, while her husband Micky was on the drums, Lis, her daughter Lucie and I went along to the opening night of A Taste Of The Musicals, presented by the Mundesley Players in the Coronation Hall.The show was directed and arranged by Tracey Loftus with her husband Tony as the compare of the show and her son Anthony leading many of the popular songs.In simple terms every one of the cast of over 30 souls pulled off a truly brilliant night out, which, I understand, played to full houses from the Opening night until August 2nd.

During the interval, we were treated to a buffet supper as well as another break for the raffle, please note: I did not win any prizes despite hoping that I would, as our Janet Munro was the raffle organiser.

The show which has been rehearsing since around Easter this year, was brilliantly put together and everyone I spoke to, on that evening and later during the week, agreed that it was a really excellent show.

Knapton Heritage WeekendOn August 2nd, I drove over just before lunch and enjoyed walking around Knapton and taking everything in.There may not be a shop in this community, but the time and energy given by so many made for a great couple of hours in the village.Harry Richardson was on hand to sell the maps of the village and offer advice to visitors. First off to where the tractors were parked up, that ranged from the large 4x4 machines right down to the little grey Fergs. Having driven such large 4 x 4 s in Australia years ago now, I have to admire the little Fergs more than any other make and model.

After checking out a number of Garage Sales for bargains, I moved on to the Church and was impressed by the many displays which covered the 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War.

It is so easy to forget just how manyof the local folks lost their lives in this war and the display of flowers remembering those who had lost a father in this war did remind me of just how many there were. Manning a wonderful exhibition in the church was John Needham who suggested, when I asked him recently why it was referred to as the Great War, that it was because of the sheer size of the war itself & the numbers of those lost in it.That age old question always comes up in ones mind.

What have we learnt from this bit of history

I fear the answer is not a lot.Even though I could only spend a short time in the village, I found that the Heritage Weekend was a really fascinating event.

Although all the singers / dancers were very impressive, one particular singer who really pulled off her performance on the evening was Victoria Ing aged 14. She has a really natural talent on the stage. On Carnival Day, cars parked on the Runton Rd Car Park after 6.30pm will not be able to leave until after the Carnival Parade has finished, at approx.10pm. All cars leaving the field will be directed right towards Sheringham. Cromer road closures will be implemented from 6.30pm - 9pm. and there will be no traffic movement until the parade has finished.

This book of poetry was lent to me recently by the Mundesley author Tricia Sturgeon and is a real delight to read and enjoy.In the recent past she has written for the My Weekly magazine as well as having work published in the Daily Mail.Tricia has also appeared on BBC Radio Norfolk several times to read her poetry.All the royalties received by Tricia will go to animal charities. A Scotsman...... .....walks into the Bank of England in London& asks for the manager. He tells the manager that he is going to Australia on business for two weeks and needs to borrow 5,000.The manager tells him that the bank will needsome form of security for the loan, so Hamishhands over the keys & documents of the new Ferrari parked on the street in front of the bank. He produces the Log Book and everything checks out. The manager agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan.The banks General Manager and its officers all enjoy a good laugh at the rough looking Scotsman for using a 120,000 Ferrari as collateral against a 5000 loan. A bank employee then drives the car into thebanks underground garage and parks it there.

Two weeks later, Hamish returns, repays the 5,000 and the interest,which comes to 15.41. The manager says:Sir, we are very happy to have had your business,and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a multimillionaire. What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow 5,000?

Hamish replies: Where else in London can I park my car for two weeks for only 15.41 and expect it to be there when I return?

Ah, the mind of the Scotsman.


For me the highlight of the show was when Paul careered around the arena on the back of an imaginary motorbike being driven by the clown. All in all it was a great performance. PKThe Editor would like to thank Paul Damen for most of these photographs.

New One Off Ring MasterOn Tuesday August 5th, Nigel Holmes of Mundesley took on the role of beingthe Circus Ferrels ringmaster for one performance only.Along with friends and family we turned out to support Nigel and this great little circus, in their wonderful tent which has been coming to Gold Park in Mundesley every August for many years.

As always it is indeed a great show of fun and games with help from the audience and was enjoyed by all the kids and grown-ups who turned up to support this event.

Nigel certainly did us all proud, and whether the circus has offered him as full time job, I have yet to know. He did indeed fit the role, if not the hat, well and along with all the other performers pulled off a great show.

Diabetes MellitusDiabetes is a disease which everyone is becoming more aware of, both doctors and patients. In simple terms it is a disease where the body cannot deal with sugar appropriately. The result of this is that sugar finds itself in our bodies where it should not be and where it will cause damage. The most common place it ends up is on theinside of our blood vessels and does the same to our blood vessels that limescale does to pipes when it builds up. This can lead to an increased amount of heart attacks, strokes and kidney disease occurring in patients that have diabetes.

There are two types of diabetes. The most common type is the one that comeson later in age and generally is a reflection of wear and tear in the pancreas and an unhealthy lifestyle. The pancreas is the organ which releases insulin into the blood stream so that sugar from our diet can be dealt with. A healthy lifestyle allows our body to use theinsulin released from the pancreas appropriately. The unhealthier we are the less likely our bodies are to use insulin appropriately. The other type of diabetes tends to come on earlier in life and is usually due to the fact the pancreas just cannot make insulin. This type of diabetes leads to the need for insulin injections from the start of that persons diabetic diagnosis. Diabetes is diagnosed by symptoms and investigations carried out by health professionals. The classic symptoms that patients present with when they are very diabetic are being very thirsty, producing a lot of urine and also being very tired. This is because the excess sugar in the bloodcauses the kidneys to lose extra water. However the majority of the time patients do not have any symptoms and their diabetes is picked up by a random blood test.

The most common blood test that is used nowto diagnose diabetes is the HbA1c blood test.This is a very accurate blood test showing how sugary the blood has been over the previous couple of months before the blood test was taken. If patients have a level consistently above 48 then they are classed as being diabetic.

Recently doctors have been able to diagnose a condition called prediabetes when patients have a HbA1c level between 42-48. This condition suggests that if a patient does not change their lifestyle they may develop diabetes in the future.

The mainstay of treating diabetes is lifestyle change, medications that lower blood sugars & insulin to replace the low levels of insulin in diabetic patients. In the first 3 to 6 months after a diabetes diagnosis it is crucial to make changes in your lifestyle to become healthier. These changes include not smoking, drinkingthe right amount of alcohol, regular exercise and a healthy diet. This in itself can sometimes treat diabetes but often patients have to go on tablets or insulin injections. There are a vast amount of these and explain-ing each one of them is beyond the scope of this article but my advice would be that if you are diabetic make sure you attend your GP surgery when asked for reviews and please remember to be compliant with your diabetic medications prescribed as this will lead to better control and less diabetic complications in the future. Fitness League Mother of four Annamarie Sterne is very excited to be starting new Fitness League classes in our local area. She held a launch at Sheringham CommunityCentre to help spread the news of the benefitsa Fitness League classes and Norman Lambcame along to enjoy the demonstration given by Annamaries current ladies who are agedbetween 38 & 82 and attend both the Cromer and Sheringham class. Cantamus Sings.........Thank You Thank you, thank you, thank you to Waitrose inNth Walsham for their generous donation and toall their customers who chose our community choir and voted with their green disc.We plan to use the donation of 290 to purchasemoveable lighting when we perform in the local churches.Our next performance will be our Christmas concert on December 6th. The programme of French and English music promises to be a festive affair including piecesby Marc-Antoine Charpentier, who is famous for writing the theme music used for the Eurovision Song Contest.As well as a selection of Christmas Carols ranging from traditional works such as John Taverners The Lamb and arrangements by John Rutter, to arrangements of Frosty the Snowman, we have a new carol written by our musical director David Ballard.The Cantamus Choir will begin rehearsing for the Christmas concert on Thursday September 4th at 7.30pm in Southrepps Church. We are a very friendly choir prone to exercisingour vocal chords in laughter as much as song. If you love singing do come and join us. No auditions are required. Our singers are of mixed ability, some of them are extremely experienced while others only experience is in the shower.With our strong community spirit, you will besurprised how soon you become part of the team,looking forward to the Thursday rehearsals. As our members come from Sheringham to Stalham; Mundesley to Aysham if transport is a problem a lift share may be possible.

North Norfolk Hockey Club The newly formed North Norfolk Hockey Club,created by the merger of former Nth Walsham and Holt Hockey Clubs is already gearing up for the season. They are hoping to recruit new players to help build on last seasons successes, which saw the womens first team finish top of the table, gaining promotion as division champions to East Womens Division 1N.Not to be outdone by the women, the mens first team finished second to gain promotion to East Division 2N.Anyone looking to play hockey in the upcomingseason is very welcome at pre-season training at 3 per session payable on the night. Northrepps Poppyland Branch Of The Royal British Legion.On Sunday 3rd August, we welcomed everyone to join us at St Marys Church, Northrepps, forour World War One Commemoration Service and Exhibition.

It was an honour for us to have the deputy Lord Lieutenant for Norfolk Mr. Richard Butler MBE(Above on Left) and his guest, Cllr.Wyndham Northam, to be with us and Cllr. Hilary Cox joined us later in the day.Jackdaniel, the local young singer/songwriter performed a song he was inspired to write about war and conflict, when studying the history of World War 1.Isla, Josh, Tabitha and Denny, pupils from the Northrepps Primary School Oak Class, recited poetry they had written and Julie Armstrong Ingram, from Northrepps, wrote a trilogy of poems, and the one chosen to be read by Dr. Joe Gaston, was The Memorial.The focus of our Exhibition was to honour the fallen, named on our War Memorial, and their individual resting places. Regiment information was on display together with various photos &memorabilia that their families have had handeddown to them.John Needham, Chairman of Cromer Branch & well known local Military Collector, brought along his World War 1 collection, including an iconic 1917 Vickers heavy machine gun.Northrepps Primary School children also exhibited all their art work.Although we are only a very small Branch, ourmembers have received a great deal of support from residents, Northrepps Primary School and people outside the village, from different parts of the country, who have donated not only theirtime, but plants for the War Memorial, a tributein the churchyard, display equipment, extracts from old Parish Magazines 1914-1918, bell ringers, flower lady, overspill car park signs and car park attending.The ladies who donated & served refreshments, the printing & delivery of our leaflets, Cliff for the photos, Janet Payne & Rev. Pat Hopkins fora very moving service all combined to rememberwith honour, those brave young men who left their
