With the Cromer Carnival behindus now and those lovely childrenall back at their school or college, its time to start our lives again.

    So what do we do?

For most of us it is work as usual, doing what we enjoy, or in somecases not that much, to pay thosehousehold bills or are we planningto do something completely

different in the future? As of Sept 14th I am off to the landof the long white cloud, NewZealand, to visit my old mum.

Now aged 85 young, shes in prettygood condition, living by the seain Omokoroa in the North Islandof NZ, about 100 plus milesSouth - East of Auckland.

New Zealand is one of those placesthat is great to visit, but living thereis another thing altogether, as youreally are miles from anywhereelse other than Australia, whichis again a newly settled land.

So of course I will enjoy my visitand seeing relations that I haventseen for years, but I will in duecourse be more than happy toget back to Norfolk, afteronly two weeks away.

The next issue to come out will allbe thanks to the likes of Cindy &her grandson Luke and also Jeff& Dorothy, who will be doingthe extra distribution, thankyou to all of them.

In particular my thanks go to mygood lady wife, Lis for puttingthe next issue together and alsomanaging the business, phonecalls and the queries etc. etc.while I am away.

Maybe I am getting old, but thethought of spending so long inthe air, travelling out to NewZealand does not inspire manypleasurable thoughts.

It really is the other side

of the globe.I will however be back and on theball at the beginning of October.

    Enjoy YourCrab Tales

Dear Philip,I have arranged a holiday for a group of ourdialysis patients, their carers including somestaff & volunteers who help on a regular basis.

There is also a transplant patient & bereavedrelative. In all 34 folk going to Bournemouthon September 29th for 4 nights.

Dialysis patients find holidays very difficultto have as there are very few places whichcan take holiday dialysis patients.

Dear Mr Philip,I am Mr H Mouse. At one time I was a roving

reporter for an earlier Crab publication. You probably wont remember me as at thatpoint you were involved in making yourmillions elsewhere.

I know you normally dont print letters fromus mice, but Mrs W Mouse says that if I saynice things about you there is a better chance.

So I think you look lovely in your pyjamas.

Why the letter then? Easy! Ive just written abook. Yes, a proper book with a cover andeverything. Its called THE MOUSEWITH THE GOLDEN NUNby Mr H Mouse.

A true story about an adventure that me and my

lovely wife Mrs W Mouse had. We were setto interview Sir S deMouse up at the big hall, when we found ourselves accidentally caughtin a dangerous plot. A band of ruthless stoatshad decided to take over the world.

Mrs W Mouse says I should point out that thepaperback version is available via Amazonand eBook is ridiculously cheap on Kindle.

She says that if you searchMr H Mousethen it will pop up, or you can find a linkto it at my web site www.mrhmouse.co.uk

And before I finish Please may us mice havea signed photograph of you actually in yourpyjamas. The dartboard down at the Cheese& Gherkin has been stolen.

    Squeak to you soon.

    Mr H Mouse.

Dear Phillip,I had to go into Trunch just before the MusicFestival, to a good customer of mine and Iunderstand that some of the local residentsare very unhappy with the antics broughton by this festival.

I had to go along the Mundesley Road inTrunch from the pub end and I noticed thatthe festival organisers had even coned offthe road trying to restrict access to the extentof trying to close the road and making lifevery difficult for some of the people livingon the Mundesley road.

The lady I went to was in tears and veryupset over it all as she stated the noisehad also badly disrupted the birds andwildlife in her garden.

It appears the organisers of this festival haverun rough shod over a few of the Trunchlocals with complete disregard.

Please can you ask others to comment onthis problem by writing in.

    Kind regards

    David

Dear Editor,In regard to the verse entitled My Missus

printed in Issue 043 edition of the CrabTales, sent in by David Thorne, I foundit very offensive.

I have a good sense of humour but this wasparticularly disturbing and unfunny.

It was not at all suitable for a FREEBIEdistributed to the general public.

Its selection was in sickenly bad taste.

    Yours sincerely

    Nona Wright

    Cromer.

    Response From Editor:

Please note the verse was not written by

David Thorne, who regularly contributesto the Crab Tales. We opted to print thisas we found it very witty.

As a unit in Cromer we were only too happyto be able to offer holiday dialysis to visitors

but this year as we are running at full capacitywith our own local patients we can no longeroffer this facility which is such a shame.

We also have patients who because of theirillness would not feel confident about beingable to travel alone and for some they havenot had a holiday for many years.

The holiday has been made possible by lots

of fundraising over the past couple of years, with a variety of raffles, fetes, stalls & verygenerous bequests, also fantastic donationsfrom Sidestrand Church who held a fete &Waitrose, North Walsham who chose usas one of their charities in June 2014.

I would like to take this opportunity on behalfof the patients to thank everybody who hashelped to make this trip possible.

Almost Angels -Rock Covers Band24 hours after the copy deadline for this editionLis, the real power (dont tell PK) behind CrabTales, set me a task - well, TWO actually, whichread: Could you carry on from Philips editorialwhich ends with: ......so I asked him to ll mein with more about the history of his band?

And..Philip offered to write a bit more himselfbut he doesnt really know much about music.

I mean, as ifIdo - I am only a drummer, for Godssake...nevertheless, not one to be phased by theimpossible, here goes...

The seed forAlmost Angelswas sown 7 years agoduring a momentary lapse in sanity & eating, byMP, but took the original name of Better the Devil

Note the complete turn-round in sentiment but,not necessarily, fortunes...

Over the course of this time, the band has becomea strong 4-piece outt whose aim it is to play rockmusic which the audience know & like yet otherbands dont necessarily wish, or have the time,to attempt.

Members are Andrea Sulston - front person andlead vocalist of note - who joined some 18 months

ago and, although the youngest amongst us, actsas a guiding maternal gure possessing a maturityfar in excess of her years and good looks.

Trevor Hall, meanwhile, is the foundation bass-man (plus additional vocalist)from Runton (East)who became a Devil (or Angel)as far back as 2009.Trevor was initially more into acoustic stuff, beinga member of Bartram-Hall and, before that, theSkylarks with his Daughter Rachel, who wenton to play violin with Stackridge & Big Train. In his deeper past, he supported Dr Feelgoodwhen living in his home county of Essex.

On now to our main man, Nigel Digby, leadguitarist/vocals/musical arranger/calminginuence; also a writer and authority onlocal railways, not least the M&GN.

When a previous band member quit a year ago,I compiled a wish-list of 6 or 7 top-ight localmusicians who - in a perfect world - we wouldbe honoured to have as our lead guitarist.

We could not believe our good fortune whenNigel, who topped this list, said he was happyto join us - not only to play - but also partakein cake, coffee, cake, rehearsals & cake eachThursday. Nigel, who owns and runs Cromer

Red House School of Music, started on guitar& bass in 1972 and joined his fathers band in1975 whilst still at Paston College.

Many locals might well recall his band, CanisStrange, who produced their own originalsback in the 80s - my Son Chris being onbass with a later edition of this band, i.e.Canis, at the close of this decade.

For many years, Nigel was the leadguitarist & singer with Razor Sharp-whowould usually support the currentDr Feelgood whenever they featuredin this locality.Latterly, 3-piece Mista Splinta, more-or-less complete Nigels CV priortohis becoming an Angel.

On to yours truly, I guess... Prior to formingwhat was to become Almost Angels, in 2007I drummed for Low Ebb(our answer toSheringham band Hi Tide), then LowCommotionand subsequently The LostBoys. Ive also been known to team upwith Steve Fordington, pianist-of-notefrom Bradeld.

I would never forgive myself if I didnt mentionKirsty OConnor Palmer - former vocalist, whowe sorely miss and who brought so much to Almost Angels, including our singer Andrea, plus much joy and laughter. Sadly, she had tostand down earlier this year following a seriousoperation which rendered her unable to sing.

We wish her all the luck in the World andextend a heartfelt invitation to join us for asong or two whenever she feels t.

    Thank you, K OC-P.

For those who havent already had the chanceopportunity to enjoy our music at such venuesas the Sheringham Crown, The Bacton Duke,Northrepps, the Mundesley Ship, The KingsHead in Cromer etc.etc.; our next gig will beat the Haig Club in Mundesley on Friday21st November.

Would be great if you could join us there...

And why the name Almost Angels?Your guess is as good as mine....

    Dont have nightmares. MP

To all users of the A148/B1436

    Felbrigg Junction

The Felbrigg Junction where the B1436 intersectswith the A148 Holt to Cromer Road has long beena source of frustration for drivers using thisjunction in all directions.

Felbrigg Parish Council are promoting an initiativeto have a roundabout installed with appropriatespeed restrictions on the approaches to thisintersection in an effort to prevent accidentsand improve trafc ow.

The B1436 is regarded as the Cromer Bypassand designated by Norfolk County CouncilHighways dept. as a Main Distributer Route.

In promoting this initiative Felbrigg Parish Councilalready have the support of the Chief Executive ofNorth Norfolk District Council Mrs Sheila Oxtoby, the NNDC planning committee, The National Trustat Felbrigg Hall, all 3 Emergency Services who usethe Cromer Bypass daily, the innumerable businessand commuter users of this busy route and the everincreasing number of tourists who regularly usethis junction and are essential to this area.

When it was agreed that a similar trafc owproblem existed at Roughton on the same road

where the B1436 intersects with the A140, theconstruction of 2 mini roundabouts immediatelysolved the problem, which in itself wouldjustify similar action at the junction ofthe A148 and the B1436 .

No purchase of land would be necessary toeffect this improvement.

If you agree with this proposal please sign this letter andreturn it to the address below by 30th September 2014.

    Thank you

John W Blair (Chairman Felbrigg Parish Council)

    I agree a roundabout is required at the B1436 / A148 junction.

over the keys to a beautifully reconditionedand newly painted van to the pople fromAbout With Friends.Looking around the van, one cannot, butbe very impressed with all the work thatMatt and his team have done to makethe van ready for this local charity.

With 17 seats, the vanwill be suitable forholidays as well asday trips.

One such journey beingplanned, in the verynear future, is oneto the French War

Heads Were Turning......all over Knightsbridge and trafc slowingto a crawl as people stopped and stared at thesupercars that took over the roads last month.

The Middle-Eastern millionaires who descendedon London for "The Season"had shipped overtheir beloved Bugattis, Lamborghinis andRolls-Royces to join them.

And of course, many of them have been greatlypersonalised to match their owner's taste.

Among the outrageous motors spotted on theKnightsbridge streets was a heavily modiedRange Rover that looks like a bar of bullion, worth 150,000.

It features gold-rimmed, carbon-black alloywheels and wrap-around tinted windows,

while sporting a private registration.Perhaps the one that looked most out of place wasa 370,000 6-wheeled Mercedes G63 AMGthat dwarfed all the other cars on the road.

No doubt the beastly motor is also anightmare to nd parking for.

Meanwhile owners of the other luxury cars seemunfazed by parking nes, with a beige-colouredBugatti Veyron with orange interior and a white& crimson Rolls-Royce spotted outside Harrodswith tickets stuck to their windscreens.

The sight of these unique motors had the car-enthusiasts salivating, with the 'carparazzi'keen to get a snap of the 4-wheeled wonders.

A Great SuccessSaturday August the 23rd was indeed a verysuccessful day for the Mundesley NationalCoast Watch on Gold Park in Mundesley.

I have to say the voice of Cerian Elson, (OnRight) was brilliant, as this is the young ladywho also appeared in the recent MundesleyPlayers performance at the Coronation Hall.

Aged just 16, she really is a natural performerand delighted everyone on the day.

This event which was organised, in the mainby John Carpenter, the Chairman of theMundesley Coast Watch was certainlya great success and enjoyed by allwith a good turn out of visitors.(Below On left)

Thorpe MarketChurch UpdateA picture to gladden our hearts!

The Unpaid Work Unit has spent 3 days cuttingthe long grass, raking it off and barrowing itdown to the Hazel Grove.

Church members spent time engaging with theyoung workers, boiling kettles & providing cakes.

We found it a worthwhile experience and theyoung men seemed very happy to have peoplehaving normal conversations with them.

They will return in October and the intention isto ask them to clear the Hazel Grove. The churchmowers are still in dock, one is likely beyondrepair & will need re-placing but the scythingmachine will enable us to keep on top of thechurchyard for the rest of the year.

Offers of help with the routine mowing arealready forth-coming although it is a caseof many hands make light work, so further

publicity to extend the volunteer base willtake place in the near future.

Meanwhile volunteers have worked on the bordersaround the church and the seat has been painted.

The borders look rather bare because some ofthe lavenders had to be removed because ofold age but re-planting is on the agenda.

Meanwhile the need is for volunteers, a posseof churchyard gnomes, to complement the currentworkers. Plans are afoot to paint gates, trim backover-grown hollies and buddleia and cut backthe ivy on the walls.

    Contact: [email protected]

    or 01263 833 252.

The churchyard is now well on its way to beingrestored to its former award winning glory anda regular schedule of services at 10 am on the1st & 3rd Sundays of each month is in place.

    Wanted Artists!

A recent exhibition by a Nth Walsham groupof artists illustrated just how attractive thevenue of Thorpe Market Church is.

A continuous run of screens at the back & alongboth sides of the nave can provide 78 feet ofvertical screens. Table tops across thepewsoffer further effective display space and thewindows can be blacked out if required andmodern lighting has been installed.

In the past up to four exhibitions by localcommunity groups a year have taken place.

The thought is that smaller private exhibitionscould also be accommodated, using fewer screensand perhaps for shorter periods of time.

The churchs exhibition facilities are freelyavailable for individuals to show theirtalents in a very attractive venue.

Negativity....This is something to think about whennegative people are doing their best torain on your parade So rememberthis story the next time

A woman was at her hairdressers gettingher hair styled for a trip to Rome with herhusband.

She mentioned the trip to the hairdresser, who responded:

Rome? Why would anyone want to go there? Its crowded and dirty. Youre crazy to go toRome. So, how are you getting there?

    Were taking Continental,was the reply.

    We got a great rate!

Continental?exclaimed the hairdresser.Thats a terrible airline. Their planes are old, their flight attendants are ugly, and theyrealways late. So, where are you staying inRome?

Well be at this exclusive little place overon Romes Tiber River called Teste.

Dont go any further. I know that place.Everybody thinks its going to be somethingspecial & exclusive, but its really a dump.

Were going to go to see the Vatican andmaybe get to see the Pope.

Thats rich, laughed the hairdresser. You and a million other people trying tosee him. Hell look the size of an ant. Boy,

good luck on this lousy trip of yours.Youre going to need it.

A month later, the woman again came infor a hairdo. The hairdresser asked herabout her trip to Rome.

It was wonderful, explained the woman, notonly were we on time in one of Continentalsbrand new planes, but it was overbooked, and they bumped us up to rst class.

The food and wine were wonderful, andI had a handsome 28-year-old stewardwho waited on me hand and foot..And the hotel was great!

Theyd just nished a $5 million remodellingjob, so now its a jewel, the nest hotel in thecity. They, too, were overbooked, so theyapologised and gave us their ownerssuite at no extra charge!

Well, muttered the hairdresser, thats allwell and good, but I know you didnt get tosee the Pope.

Actually, we were quite lucky, because as wetoured the Vatican, a Swiss Guard tapped meon the shoulder, and explained that the Popelikes to meet some of the visitors, and if Id beso kind as to step into his private room andwait, the Pope would personally greet me.

Sure enough, ve minutes later, the Popewalked through the door and shook myhand! I knelt down and he spoke a fewwords to me..

    Oh, really! Whatd he say?

He said: Who messed up your hair?

Struggling To Get AGood Nights Kip?- Here Are Some Pointers to Help

The Importance of A Full Nights Sleep

As a GP one of the more common issues I encounteris patients who experience some sort of difcultyin getting adequate sleep; whether this is fallingasleep initially or staying asleep. In fact statistics suggest that 1 out of 3 peopleat any given time have troubles in this area.

Sleep deprivation is known to have several negativeconsequences including a reduction in learningand memory, weight gain, increased propensityfor having accidents during the daytime, poormood, cardiovascular problems (eg high bloodpressure) and reduced immune function (ieincreased susceptibility to infections).

The aim of this article is to help to empower youwith the knowledge & tools you need to improveyour chances of getting the sleep you need.

    Some Science Behind Sleep

Before we move on to discuss some strategies fordealing with sleep problems it is helpful to havean understanding of what normal sleep entails.

A good nights sleep is considered to have thefollowing characteristics: less than 30 mins to

fall asleep, maintenance of sleep for 6-8 hours, less than 3 brief awakenings per night andfeeling refreshed on awakening.

However the medical profession recognises thatindividuals are different so the exact amount ofsleep needed from person to person is variable.

The main issue is really whether you are ableto function satisfactorily with the amount ofsleep you get.

Normal sleep has two different phases. The rst of these is known as quiet sleep -this progresses through 4 different stages.

The 2nd phase is known as rapid eye movement(REM) sleep. The brain is very active during thistime, whilst the body is inactive apart from the

rapid movement of the eyes. This REM time iswhen most dreaming occurs.During a normal nights sleep there are approx.4-5 periods of quiet sleep alternating with 4-5periods of REM sleep- these are interspersedbriey by short periods of wakening everytwo hours or so.

Common Causes of Poor SleepThese are myriad but usually fall into one of thefollowing three categories. Firstly problems dueto temporary factors such as travel, a new baby, change of routine etc.

Sometimes people go through phases when theyxate on the amount of sleep they get and startto clock-watch- this can give the perceptionthat a normal nights sleep is inadequate when

actually the total time asleep is satisfactory. These problems are usually temporary and willusually settle given time. The second category isproblems due to physical factors. This includesillnesses causing pain, breathlessness, cough, needing to pass urine etc.In some cases a condition known as obstructivesleep apnoea can be the culprit where patientsmay have disrupted sleep due to intermittentblockage of the airways. Signs of this couldinclude excess snoring & choking episodes.

These would be best addressed by treating theunderlying cause which may mean a trip to theGP surgery. It also is important to remember thatsubstances such as alcohol, caffeine and some

prescribed medications can also have an effect.

The 3rd category comprises psychological issuessuch as depression, anxiety or bereavement.Again dealing with these will often rectifythe sleeping problem.

What can I do to deal with poor sleep?Doctors refer to habits that promote a good nightssleep as sleep hygiene. These are things whichyou can try yourself which may resolve the

problem without necessarily needing a trip tothe GP surgery. The main points include:

Dont go to bed until you feel sleepy.

Dont stay in bed if youre not asleep - gointo another room and do something else -return when youre tired.

Avoid daytime naps (even when exhausted)

Reserve a room for sleep only - dont work, eat, read or watch TV in it.

Avoid caffeine, alcohol and nicotine within6 hours of bedtime

Try a warm bath & warm milky drink at bedtime.

Regular daytime exercise helps you feel more tired at night - obviously avoid close to bedtime.

Get up at the same time each morningregardless of how youve slept.

Relaxation techniques such as progressivemuscular relaxation can be helpful.

Some of these points may seem counterintuitive(eg: avoiding daytime naps, getting up when youare not sleeping, getting up at the same timeeach morning). They may even initially makeyou feel more tired but the ultimate aim is tore-establish a regular routine.

What about drug treatment?Doctors sometimes use a short course of sedativemedication (often Zopiclone or Zolpidem) fora week or two in severe cases to help with re-establishing a regular routine. However it should be borne in mind that theseshould be tried only after the above measureshave been implemented. They can be verydifcult to come off once people becomeaddicted (some people develop severewithdrawal symptoms).

In addition they can cause a hangover effect insome people and make it difcult to function thefollowing the day. They have been shown toincrease the risk of falls and confusionparticularly in older people.

Some people also try valerian which is a herbalover the counter treatment but there is no evidenceas yet to show that this is actually effective.

The emphasis in treating sleep problems shouldalways be to improve sleep habits and addressthe underlying causes rather than resort topotentially damaging medication.

Cromer RNLILifeboat DayFirst indications are that the money raised onSunday August 3rd 2014 has surpassed allexpectations. The money raised so faris approximately 5500.

The beautiful weather combined withthe crowds of people walking along the

promenade meant that all of the stallholders did a roaring trade all day.

There were many activities to wow thecrowds including displays by both ofCromer RNLIs lifeboats.

The boats were joined by Sheringham RNLIto the delight of the assembled crowds.

Jim Page, Cromer RNLI Treasurer said:I would like to thank all of the many generouspeople who attended & helped us raise all thismoney. We will denitely be using some of theideas when we plan next years event.

Cromer Lifeboat Station has been operatingsince 1804. To learn more about the LifeboatStation go to www.rnli.org/cromer

    From Petes Pen

Norfolk Rivers TrustI have just come back from a visit to the RiverMun Nature Reserve in Northrepps. It was quiteamazing to see the improvement to the area wehave collectively made in such a short time.

The ponds which earlier this year were dry andovergrown with reeds are now looking muchimproved; the water is clear and sticklebacks& frogs are abundant. Along the edges a widevariety of plant species grown from the seed

bank we disturbed when we excavated themhave sprung up; ag iris, marsh marigold, hempagrimony, purple loosestrife, gwort, mint andmany more have recolonised.

Around these swarms of insects includingSouthern Hawker dragonies are buzzing, supporting the wider ecosystem.

The understory trees we planted at the start ofthe year are ourishing and in a few years will

provide a thick understory, ideal for nesting birds.

We do need some help to protect these from deerplease see below for information.

Over 30 bird boxes created by local pupils canbe found dotted around the woodlands, whichwere added fairly late in spring so will no doubtbegin to be occupied next year.

Finally, we have begun work on building a hidenext to one of the ponds where visitors will beable to observe the heron &kingsher whichvisit on a regular basis. We just need to add aroof &viewing ap for it to be ready.

Future volunteering sessions are:Tuesday 23rd September. 6 - 8:30pm.(Training session) Learn how to record wildlife(butterflies/birds/dragonflies etc) in the reserveSaturday 11th October. 10am - 1pm.(Practical session) Protection of recently planted un-derstory (which is being rapidly nibbled on by deer!)

To get involved in this exciting project or haveany questions please contact me.

These days we all appear to beacquiring more and more yet arereluctant to part with anything, just in case it may be usefulin the future.More of us living in ats & apart-ments, and houses are becomingsmaller, so storage becomes aproblem, but not any longer.

    Youll have seen the Yesself-

drive, rental vans in and aroundCromer, well now, as well as beingable to help you move your items,Yescan store them for you.

Situated at the old Coredale garagesite on Middlebrook Way in Cromer,YesSelf Storage Solutions haveconverted the huge warehouse atthe rear of the rental rms show-room into individual self-storageunits which can be rented for anyperiod from a week to a year, orlonger if required.

The units range in size from just24 sq ft to over 150 sq ft, large

enough to store a car if needed. Each room is constructed frombox-prole steel sheeting witha single steel door, providing ahigh degree of security as theoccupier of each room willhave the only key to gainentry to their unit.Stored goods will be in a dry, secure,vermin-free environment, withaccess at any reasonable time.

24 hour CCTV covers the siteboth internally and externally

and plans are in hand to providecustomers with 24 hr electronicaccess. The rooms are availableto both private individuals, forthe storage of furniture, personaleffects etc. and to local rms whomay need temporary storage forout of season, or excess stock,at their own premises.

    TheYes

car and van rentalbusiness, which now has a eetof more than 35 modern vehicles,

began from nothing in 2007 andhas grown into a substantial local

business which is often assumedto be the local branch of anational company.

The business is still privately owned& operated by father and son teamNeil and Patrick Moody.

Their professional approach hasresulted in the rm being acceptedas a member of the United RentalGroup, a group which links over

500 independent hire rms into apowerful force within the Britishrental industry.

This allows them to continuallyupdate their rental eet with newmodels as they become available.

The expansion into self-storage willsee the companies grow even morerapidly over the coming years andis a testament to their continuedcondence in North Norfolkand Cromer in particular.
