You probably know taxdeductions are an impor-tant part of your incometax return and that youwant as many as possible. But do you understandhow deductions actuallysave youmoney or how todetermine which ones youcan claim on your taxreturn?

“Simply put, deduc-tions lower the amount ofyour taxable income,”explains Jessi Dolmage, spokesperson for Tax-ACT, makers of populartax-preparation software.“The more deductionsyou have, the less tax youpay.”

Knowing which deduc-tions you qualify for andwhether you should item-ize is easy with do-it-yourself tax preparationproducts. Dolmage says:“The program eliminatesthe guess work. Answersimple questions aboutdeductions and it will tellif you’re better off itemiz-ing or taking the standarddeduction. It also checksfor errors and offersone-on-one tax help everystep of the way.”

You have the choice ofclaiming the standarddeduction or itemiz-ing deductions onyour tax return, but you shouldchoose whichev-

er amount is higher.Nearly two out of three

taxpayers claim the stan-dard deduction. Amountsare adjusted for inflationeach year, vary by filingstatus, and are higher forthose 65 and older or whoare legally blind.

For 2012 federal taxreturns due April 15, 2013,standard deductionamounts are:

» $5,950 for single, ormarried filing separately

» $11,900 for marriedfiling jointly, and qualify-ing widows(ers)

» $8,700 for head ofhousehold

If you itemize, yourdeductions are listedseparately on your taxreturn.

Itemized deductionsare reported on ScheduleA and can only be filedwith long Form1040. Onthe other hand, taxpayersclaiming the standarddeduction can file Form1040, 1040A or 1040EZ.

Itemized deductionsmay include mortgageinterest, state and localtaxes, charitable gifts, unreimbursed employee

According to a reportfrom the Institute ofMedicine (IOM), morethan 100 million Amer-icans suffer from chronicpain, as reported on thewebsite WebMD.com.

And those with chronicpain seek relief in drugsandmedications, supple-ments, procedures, sur-geries, therapies andmany other ways, costingmore than $86 billion eachyear, according to thesame report. And that’sjust the monetary cost.

Chronic pain has acumulatively debilitatingeffect that can causedepression, lower produc-tivity on the job, interferewith family life and evencause sufferers to losethe will to live.

If you are sufferingfrom chronic pain andfeel like you’ve run out ofoptions, there is hope: theNeurologic Relief CentersTechnique™.

“This technique wasintroduced in 2009 and isgroundbreaking becauseit addresses the rootcauses of pain, not thesymptoms,” explained Dr.DarenMazzone of Heal-ing Touch NeurologicRelief Center of Cincin-nati. “People sufferingfrom such neurologicalconditions as fibromyal-gia, multiple sclerosis(MS), burning feet, rheu-matoid arthritis (RA),reflex sympathetic dys-trophy (RSD), chronicoverall body pain, irrita-ble bowel syndrome(IBS), migraines, andeven lupus, have foundlasting relief with thistechnique.”

Healing Touch Neuro-logic Relief Center ofCincinnati is one of only225 clinics in six coun-tries worldwide to offerthis treatment. Said Dr.Mazzone: “I perform asimple, non-invasive,15-minute, pain-relief testthat will tell me if a pa-

tient is a good candidatefor treatment.”

If the relief test ispositive, the patient willexperience profound painrelief at the time of test-ing. The resulting com-fort from the test alonelasts anywhere fromminutes to days.

More importantly, itsignals the next step: thepatient will be scheduledfor a full examination todetermine the most effec-tive treatment plan.

And for many patients, just hearing that providesmore hope than they’vereceived thus far. Dr.Mazzone only accepts thecases he feels he cantruly help. In his experi-ence, about 75 percent ofpeople test positive.

Jackie Wineland, apatient, describes herexperience with the tech-nique: “I started cominghere because I have fibro-myalgia. Fibromyalgia isa very constant pain. Theresult that I’ve seen insuch a short amount oftime is just amazing. Icannot believe how good Ifeel.”

And patient Jann Cic-chiani-Garner had this tosay: “I thank God that Dr.Mazzone and his caringstaff have come into mylife. This new treatmentDr. Mazzone is using hasdone more for me thanany pain pill could everdo.”

In addition to offeringthe technique, HealingTouch Neurologic ReliefCenter is also a wellnesscenter specializing inreturning the body tooptimal function, whichmeans better sleep, moreenergy, better digestionand a greater sense ofwell-being.

“We know the bodybreaks down for threedifferent reasons: phys-ical, due to sedentarylifestyle or trauma; chem-ical, from toxins and pol-

lution; and from hormonalimbalances caused bychronic stress,” explainedDr. Mazzone. “Our ap-proach is to determine the

underlying causes of yourhealth concerns so we canreturn you to great healthand the quality of life thatyou deserve.”

We’re all looking for-ward to a fresh start atthe beginning of the newyear. Whether it’s anupdated fitness regime, pursuing new hobbies orgetting organized, thereare a slew of resolutionsto try. In 2013, why notmake a few changes tonot only yourself, butalso your home? Byincorporating cutting-edge design trends, you’ll add style and colorthat’s perfect to kick-start the year.

“Powerful patternscan be easily achievedwith a fresh coat of paintand a premium painter’stape, like FrogTape Mul-ti-Surface and DelicateSurface,” says HGTVdesigner and televisionpersonality TaniyaNayak. “Treated withPaintBlock Technology,FrogTape can be used tocreate these new, in-tricate patterns for ahaute interior. And bestof all, FrogTape will helpdeliver sharp lines, mak-ing your handiwork looklike that of a profession-al.”

When using bold pat-terns, it’s best to find theright pairing of both thecolor and the print to notoverwhelm your space. If you’re looking to usebright colors, incorpo-rate the patterns ontoone accent wall or win-dow treatments. Ifyou’re using neutralhues, try using a patternon a larger scale, aroundthe entire room or evena piece of furniture.“You don’t want the ele-ments of a space to fighteach other,” advisesNayak. “Considering thecolor, scale and intensityof any pattern in rela-tionship to the rest of

your decor will leaveyou with a finishedspace that is perfect for2013 and beyond.”

Mixing up materials“The key to updating

your home with the lat-est trends is finding abalance,” says Nayak.“It’s all about making itpersonal and addingelements that fit yourlifestyle and design per-sonality, without break-ing the bank.” One greatway to make a big im-pact on a small budget isto mix materials, cre-ating a blend of polishedand raw in a room withmodern and industrialelements.

“The rustic look willbe extremely popular inhomes in 2013, as it’selegant and comfort-able,” adds Nayak. “Itprovides a feeling ofrichness and warmth, while still being comfort-able to actually live inthe space.” A great ma-terial for achieving theindustrial and modernlook is reclaimed wood. From frames, to furni-ture, this aged, repur-posed wood can bringrichness and a dose ofstyle to any space.

Mixing materials can

also mean utilizing dif-ferent finishes through-out a room. In the kitch-en, using contrastingmaterials makes your

Look for theunexpected

“Just because a prod-uct is made for a specif-ic purpose doesn’t meanyou can’t reimagine howit could be used,” saysNayak. “For example, hanging materials onthe wall that are typical-ly used as flooring canbe breathtaking. Wood

planks or concrete pan-els, featured verticallyand not just on theground, add richnessand texture.”

Another great tip toaccomplishing thistrend is to look at con-struction materials innew ways. Molding andpaneling can add archi-tectural detail well be-yond crown moldingand baseboards. In-stalling framing on awall and painting it withcomplementary paintcolors can change thelook and feel of anyroom. “Unique treat-ments instantly in-crease the texture, depth and visual appeal, without spending a lotof time or money,” saysNayak.

Many homeowners aredismayed to find theirroof has failed in theheart of winter. Thisleaves them trying todecide to replace the roofnow or try to wait untilspring.

COULD YOU?Roof replacements

during cold weather arepossible if done by skilledprofessionals. Shinglemakers such as OwensCorning have detailedrequirements concerningthe temperatures atwhich their materials canbe installed (28 degreesand dry). While it may bepossible to install roofs intemperatures lower than28 degrees, many extraprecautions are needed. When installing shingles,

roofers need to be carefulnot to damage the upperportion, called the head-lap, when hammering.

Owens Corning doesnot change the warrantybased strictly on installa-tion temperature. Thismeans that your newdimensional shingle hasthe exact same warrantyas any roof installed inwarmer temperatures.

New shingles need toundergo thermal sealing, which can take severaldays of sunshine andtemperatures of 40 de-grees and higher. Accord-ing to one of Cincinnati’smost experienced in-stallation foremen (28years), Paul Ogden of ANew Rooftime, the besttip is that no roofing gunsshould be used at temper-

atures below 30 F. Hesaid, “At Rooftime, wehand-nail all our winterinstallations at no extracharge to our homeown-ers.”

All steep-slope roofersmust be careful not todamage the underlay-ment, which can becomebrittle in cold weather.Only #30 felt or syntheticDeck Armor felt shouldbe considered as under-layment, and all underlay-ments should be installedusing cap nails, not sta-ples.

For winter re-roofingjobs, Rooftime warns: Donot removemore roofingthan can be replaced onthe same day. Winterweather is difficult toforecast; many disheart-ened homeowners have

woken to interior damagefrom a roof left under feltover night.

The most commonproblem is ice dams, which occur when snowthat has accumulated on aslanted roof melts andthen forms icicles thathang from the eaves andgutters. Professionalroofers can help minimizeice dams with drip edgeflashing. Improper R-values in the attic in-sulation can also cause icedams. Rooftime estima-tors begin every roofinspection by lookinginside the attic to checkthe insulation, ventilationand home’s framing.

SHOULD YOU?Old roofs hate cold

winters. Winter will only

make a bad roof situationworse. As the temper-atures fluctuate, yourshingles expand and con-tract, causing curling andcracking in. When olderroof shingles curl andthere is a heavy snow, theweight of the snow causessome of those curledshingles to crack. Thisleads to a leaky roof. Also, when heavy snow freezesit can addmore damage. An experienced roofermonitors the weather asclosely as a TVmeteorol-ogist and schedules roofinstalls between bad-weather days. In Cincin-nati, there are many dayswith bright sun and tem-peratures in the upper50s. Last February, therewas a four-day stretchwhere the temperaturestayed above 65 degrees;Rooftime was able tohave its two roof crewsinstall a total of four newjobs in that time frame.Roofing contractors areless busy in the winterthan in the summer.Homeowners in a rushmight be able to get a newroof in a matter of days asopposed to waiting weeksor months. For manyhomeowners quick turn-around is reason enoughto have a job done in thewinter.

WOULD YOU?Many roofing compa-

nies offer discounts forroofing jobs performed inthe winter. For the samereasons that you will beable to receive fasterservice during the winter, you will also receive abetter price than duringwarmer months. Accord-ing to MissMona of Roof-time, estimators are in-structed to winter dis-count to keep their crewsworking and off the un-employment line. By

hygienist, the dentist andthe parent is important.Everyone needs to un-derstand what is neces-sary for the child to havegood oral hygiene.

Parents play a veryimportant role in a child’soral hygiene. Theymustenforce that the child isbrushing and flossing on aregular basis. You should

Teach your child tobrush their tongue, tohelp prevent bad breath. You should consult withthe dentist to see if yourchild should be using afluoride rinse as part oftheir daily oral hygienecare.

If you have a child whois athletic, it is very im-portant to guard theirteeth from any type ofinjury. We recommendusing a mouth guard tohelp prevent your childfrom any type of mouthtrauma. If your childexperiences mouth trau-ma, you should consult adentist as soon as pos-sible.

A leading cause oftooth decay in children issugar. Sports drinks areloaded with sugar andalso contain a high levelof acid. Parents shouldencourage their childrento drink water. This helpswith re-hydrating theirsystem during exercise, and does not increasetooth decay.
