Collared Coupling Retaining Bolt Rotary Compressors

In a continuing effort for product improvement and to reduce product packaging costs,Ariel now offers a special low profile collared retaining bolt (CRB) for use on AR seriesrotary compressor drive coupling hubs. It is designed to minimize the coupling hub

counterbore depth for selected coupling designs. The CRB can allow the use ofstandard, semi-finished coupling hubs for reduced torque compressor applications.

The rotary compressor is driven through a coupling, which is attached to the tapered, keyed shaft end of the male rotor. A compressors rotating speed, operating conditions,

process gas composition, and the resulting torque requirement, determine thecouplings size and hub retaining method.

The standard bolt and washer retaining method was originally developed forrefrigeration service in high horsepower applications that require the use of a special

    coupling hub design.

The new CRB is designed to facilitate the use of standard size coupling hubs commonly

used in natural gas applications. Natural gas and other non-refrigeration compressorapplications can involve less than the maximum allowable shaft horsepower and torque.

Ariels engineering reference ER-41 Rotary Compressor Coupling Hub Installation &

Retention provides details and application limitations for the use of CRBs.

Installation and removal of the CRB requires the use of an Ariel supplied torquing

adapter tool. The tool applies torque using dowel pins and adapts to a standard 1/2 or3/4 drive torque wrench, see attached drawings.

For new unit reduced-torque applications, the CRB option can be specified through Ariel

    Order Entry.
