Relationships Between Dads and Daughters

Your generous commitment to become a 2014 sponsor will make an

impact on healthy relationships between dads and their daughters.

Nearly 71% of all high school dropouts come from fatherless

homes – 9 times the average. (National Principals Association

Report).

Family research suggests that daughters who have secure and

loving relationships with their fathers have better grades in

school, have positive self esteem, demonstrate more courage,

have healthy relationships with men, and are more likely to

continue their education.

While fathers certainly love all their children, it seems that many dads spend a lot more time with their

sons. Perhaps it’s because they believe that they have more in common with their boys. But with a little

more understanding, fathers can feel just as comfortable around their daughters as they do their sons. It

is certainly important for fathers to connect with their daughters.

Connect Fathers and Daughters Wherever They Are

Over 3000 dads and daughters have participated in the Date with

Dad Weekend. Now in its seventh year, Date with Dad Weekend

has expanded to “A Celebration of Fathers”, five events designed to:

1. Improve father-daughter and father-family relationships

2. Increase public awareness of the developmental importance of

these relationships

3. Provide opportunities for positive father-daughter/father-family

interactions

4. Publically celebrate fatherhood

5. Create opportunities for area fathers to connect with a collaborative system of fatherhood

education, provide opportunities for participants (both fathers and daughters) to apply lessons

learned in educational programs, and serve as a catalyst to renew, transform, and strengthen

father-daughter and father-family relationships in our community.

This interactive event provides an

opportunity for fathers and daughters

to participate in several sessions that

promote a variety of preventive health

practices within a festive atmosphere.

Dads and daughters play games and

sports, and engage in various activities.

Previous events have featured Kick

Boxing, Twister, Cheerleading, Hula Hooping, Zumba, and a demonstration on how

to prepare healthy snacks. It’s a bonding experience that’s all about health, fitness,

being active, and having fun!

This evening will feature a special conference where the Understanding Dad program will be introduced. The aim is to improve attitudes

that lead to better relationships between mothers, or other female guardians or

caregivers, and the fathers of their daughters, for the sake of the daughters. The evening will also provide these women with community

resources that promote family strengthening. The overall goal is that women better

understand their role in supporting a relationship between daughters and their fathers, ditching the rivalry that can often

exist between mothers and fathers.

This is largely a celebratory event that invites community participation. As a

celebration of fatherhood, friends, family, and participants from community organizations can walk or run in support of fathers and father-figures (even those who are deceased). The event is designed to be followed by an opportunity for

participants to meet with area health-care and health-information specialists. Dash For Dads reinforces the need for positive and preventive health practices that

benefit youth and adults alike, and serves to promote the dual importance of fatherhood and health.




A DANCE OF THEIR OWN Join the Movement:

The Petersburg City Jail

Closed to the Public

This dance, just like our Date with Dad Dance, grew from the hearts of the teen and pre-teen

girls taking part in Camp Diva. As part of a social change project in the Girls For A Change program, the girls wrote to a local sheriff and asked if

daughters could spend a special afternoon with their incarcerated fathers enjoying “a dance of

their own.” That sheriff said “yes,” and so A Dance of Their Own was born. Designed to take place within a correctional facility, participating

fathers dress in semi-formal attire for a date with their daughters, with no physical barriers between them, and they enjoy a meal and live comedy, dance, play games,

and participate in other activities aimed at father-daughter bonding and creating special memories. These relationships have been found to be protective factors against recidivism. And for

children of incarcerated parents, these relationships can help attenuate many of the psychological and

developmental risks associated with having incarcerated parents. This event can also be

incorporated into existing fatherhood initiative programs taking place within correctional centers, providing opportunities for fathers to apply lessons

learned during these programs/classes.

This is our signature celebratory event, originally created by the girls taking part in Camp Diva. Date with Dad features

interactive activities within a highly-festive banquet-style setting equivalent to that of a ball. It’s an afternoon where dads

and their daughters dress up in formal or semi-formal attire and enjoy a red carpet entrance with interviews by a local celebrity, a catered dinner, live entertainment, contests, prizes,

photos, special guests, and of course, lots of dancing!

Camp Diva also honors a group of dads with Real Father Awards as the result of letters written about them by their

daughters. Among other benefits, Date with Dad allows fathers and daughters

to spend intense quality time together, and gives fathers an opportunity to model qualities of manhood and fatherhood that can influence their daughters’ male-female

relationship decision-making later in life.
