focused,  coordinated  approach  is  designed  to  convert  political  dialogue  into  action,  and  action  into 

impactful and favorable results.

their public policies regarding the teaching profession. Actions taken and identification of gaps. 

Each member state will present on their policies as they relate to the teaching profession. This will form 

the  basis  for  the  subsequent  discussion  with  the  various  partners  with  a  view  to  finding  gaps  and 

opportunities for change.

Partnerships

Chair of the Inter‐American Committee on Education (CIE) 

OAS  member  states  approved  the  Inter‐American  Education  Agenda  (IEA)  at  the  IX  Inter‐American 

Meeting of Ministers of Education, held in The Bahamas in February 2017.  The IEA is a roadmap which 

aims  to  strengthen  cooperation  and  build  partnerships  to  ensure  quality,  inclusive,  and  equitable 

education.  It  aims  to  advance  cooperation  and  strengthen member  states’  institutional  capacities  in 

three  areas  of  action:  1) Quality,  inclusive,  and  equitable  education;  2) Strengthening of  the  teaching 

profession; and 3) Comprehensive early childhood care.

Authorities from Working Group 2 will share the progress made.

Stakeholders’ Perspectives 

Cooperation, as it relates to the Inter‐American Education Agenda and its second pillar “Strengthening 

the  Teaching  Profession”  is  understood  as  a  means  for  institutional  strengthening  and  public  policy 

development  through  collaboration  by  OAS  Member  States  among  themselves.  As  stated  in  the 

Declaration  of  The  Bahamas,  this  needs  to  also  be  supported  by  building  alliances  to  leverage  the 

existing  resources  and  practices  of  national,  sub‐regional,  regional  and  international  organizations  to 

help implement the IEA.

14:00 – 15:00 Roundtables: Matching Policy and Professional Development Needs with Opportunities 

OAS Member  States will  reflect on  challenges,  needs  and gaps within  their  own national  policies  and 

how they can be addressed. The breakout roundtable discussions will provide an opportunity for direct 

engagement  between  government  representatives  to  explore  potential  partnerships  and  explore 

concrete  technical  horizontal  cooperation  exchanges.  Member  States  will  express  their  interest  in 

potential partnerships/exchanges that have been explored during roundtable discussions.  

Special  emphasis  will  be  put  on  the  OAS  programs  implemented  by Member  States  and  the  actions 

defined under the Work Plan of the Inter‐American Education Agenda with a view to matching needs of 

Member  States with  opportunities.  As  stated  in  the  Inter‐American  Education  Agenda,  OAS‐ITEN  can 

contribute  to  achieving  the  objectives  set  forth  in  the  Agenda.  OAS‐ITEN  has  paved  the way with  its 

pivotal  role  as  a  proven mechanism  for  the  region  as well  as  the  coordination  and  complementarity 

created with various partners.

Expressions of interest from Member States on sharing programs, policies and lessons learned discussed 

as a result of the roundtables will be shared as well. 

This session will serve as a first exercise to respond to Member States’ needs and priorities as defined in 

the IEA Work Plan, connecting Member States’ expression of commitments with a robust plan of action 

to be defined as the way forward.
