Dear members, one year has passed yet

again! We had an amazing week of 2014

WGC-HSBC Champions earlier last month,

and I believe that many of you must still be

reeling from Bubba’s Watson’s brilliance at

Hole 18. Do take a look at the review of the

tournament in this month’s issue! Also, as

the year quietly creeps away, don’t forget

that we still have the annual Christmas

Four-Clubs Challenge, taking place in mid-

mid December! I hope that all of you have

had a fulfilling and enriching 2014, and

here’s wishing you an early Merry

Christmas, and an awesome 2015 ahead!

December Course Closure Updates

Due to the winter season, we may encounter unexpected frost and fog. Should there be any disruptions; shotgun start may have to be conducted for the morning and afternoon tee times. As such, please call in advance to check the latest update of course information. With unpredictable changes in course conditions, we seek your understanding in the event that flights might not be able to complete all 18 holes.

由于冬季来临，我们随时会遇到霜，雾现象。根据天气恶劣程度，我们

Dear Members and Guests,

Another year has come and gone for the WGC-HSBC Champions and this will be difficult to forget. The winning score dropped from -24 to -11 and much of that was due to the thickness of the rough. Anyone who had the chance to play in the weeks following the event will have a very good understanding of what long and thick rough can do to the golf course.

With any type of long grass, it does take time

to cut it shorter as if you cut too much at once,

the grass will turn brown very quickly and not

look very nice. For this reason, the rough will

be cut a little at a time to ensure the health and

aesthetics of the grass.

As we slowly bring the rough height down, we

will slowly bring the green height up. During

the tournament, the greens were 12+ on the

stimpmeter and for most golfers, that can be

very challenging. It also causes a lot of stress

to the greens so a slightly higher cut will allow

for healthier greens and a better pace for our

members and guests. We will try to keep the

green speed at 9.5-10 on the stimpmeter which is

still fairly quick.

The greens will have a small aeration and top-

dressing done to help relieve some of the stress

but it will be very minimal and barely noticeable

to most golfers.

Overall, the golf course conditions are really

good and our goal will be to maintain a higher

standard throughout the year. With extra

fertilizer applications, we expect better growth

throughout the seasons to keep the grass healthy,

green, and playable.

亲爱的会员和嘉宾，

新的一年即将到来，而过去的汇丰冠军赛

令人难以忘怀。由于较厚的长草，让领先

分数一度从-24 升至-11。有机会在这几

周内来到球场打球的球手们也将会对长且

厚的长草有个更好的理解与认识。

同其它任何种类的长草一样，我们无法将

其一下回复原有的长度，否则只会加快草

的枯黄速度。因此，我们会在确保草种保

持健康及美观的前提下修剪草种。

与此同时，我们也会因地制宜渐渐地增高

果岭区的草种长度。在大赛期间，果岭测

速器上的果岭速度显示为 12+，对许多球

手而言是一个巨大挑战。这也会给果岭造

成很大的压力，所以增高草种长度能为各

位会员及嘉宾带来更健康、美丽的果岭。

我们会将果岭速度控制在 9.5-10，当然

相对而言依旧是属于较快的范围内。

我们会对果岭进行一次小范围的打孔和

铺沙作业，但是这毕竟只是一次小规模

的养护不会对球手造成较大影响。

总体而言，球场条件依旧处于良好状

态，我们的目标是将这一顶峰态势维持

一整年。我们也期望通过额外的施肥，

能使草种保持健康、嫩绿，增加球场的

可玩性。

News from the Academy

Habit #2

All players start hitting balls with a

short club.

Why this is important? The pros start with a

wedge and make short swings. Only after their

body is warm will they move to hitting longer

clubs making a longer swing. The pros

understand that their bodies are not prepared

to hit their driver on their first swing of the

day, as the driver requires a long swing and

body flexibility.

During the HSBC the Academy coaching team had the opportunity to spend time on the driving

range. For us this was a dream come true as were privileged to be inside the ropes at a PGA Tour

event watching the best players in the world practice golf. While on the range we noticed a few

practice habits that all the players were performing. Here is a list of the practice habits and why they

are important.

Habit #1

All players had a warm up routine.

Why this is important-Professional athletes

understand that warming up their muscles and

joints help them to move better. A good

warm up routine creates flexible muscles and

joints, prevents injury, and prepares the body

to create powerful and fast rotational forces

to hit the golf ball well.


Habit #4

Every player holds their follow thru

position for 5-6 seconds.

Why this is important-First, tour pros have

amazing balance, they swing the golf club very

fast but they control their body into the finish

position. The pros remain motionless in their

follow thru position, with their eyes tracking

the flight of their golf ball until it lands on the

ground.

Habit #3

Most players use alignment rods

Why this is important-Golf is a target sport,

and the pros understand that their club-head

and body must be aligned properly to the

target. Alignment is something tour pros are

always working on.

Elite Junior Golf News

A big congratulation’s goes out to Sheshan junior

member Ye Lei for playing in her first US LPGA

Tour event. She was invited to play in the LPGA

Blue Bay ladies tour event held October 22-27 on

Hainan Island, China The Jian Lake Blue Bay

course set up was demanding at 6800 yards with

weather delays every day due to storms and rain,

however Ye Lei shot rounds very respectable rounds

of 76-79-75=230. We asked Ye Lei what was the

biggest difference between the CLPGA and the

LPGA and she said the players were a lot bigger,

making her feel small. In spite of the fact she was a

bit nervous playing in this event, she aid she felt she

played pretty good giving herself a grade of B-.

让肌肉保持兴奋状态以便让其灵活自

如。一次好的热身运动能使肌肉、关节

放松，防止受伤的同时也能让身体做到

有力迅速的旋转动作。

习惯 2

球手们用短杆击球

为什么这点如此重要？职业球手们通常

以切杆和短挥开始他们接下去的动作。

只有将体温控制在一定温度后才有利于

之后长挥等动作。职业选手们明白只有

身体达到了足够的灵活性才能用一号木

做出完美的长挥动作。


习惯 4

每个球手会在动作完成后保持 5-

6 秒的停顿

其重要性在于，首先职业球手们都有一

个良好的平衡，他们在迅速挥杆的同时

也会控制身体有一个完美的手感动作。

职业球手们往往会在完成这一系列动作

后停顿几秒，观察球的飞行方向直至球

落地后才移开视线。

许多球手使用校准棒

高尔夫是一个有目标性的运动，职业球

手们知道他们的杆头和身体必须与目标

保持一致。校准是许多职业球手一直做

的必要动作。

首先最先恭喜的是佘山青少年成员叶雷获

得了美国 LPGA 巡回赛的参赛资格。她受

邀参加 10月 22 日-27日在中国海南举行

的 LPGA 蓝湾女子巡回赛。鉴湖•蓝湾高尔

夫球会的赛事要求为 6800码，但由于风

雨等天气原因屡遭延时，然而叶雷仍以 76

杆-79杆-75杆总杆 230 杆的绝妙成绩交

上了一份令人满意的答卷。我们采访叶

雷，询问 GLPGA 和 LPGA 对她而言最大的

区别在哪儿？叶雷回答道，其他球手们体

Rule 14-11b: Ball played from outside tee ground

Q In stroke play, A played from outside the teeing ground and his ball came

to rest out of bounds. He played another ball from within the teeing ground.

Is he penalized stroke and distance under Rule 27-1, as well as two strokes

under Rule 11-4b?

问：比杆赛中，球员A从发球区外打了球，且将球打至界外。此时，

他回到发球区内击打另外一个球。球员A是否应按照违反了规则27-1

加罚一杆和距离同时按照规则11-4b再加罚两杆呢？

A No. A is penalized only two strokes under Rule 11-4b. The ball played from

outside the teeing ground was not in play. Therefore, the fact that it came to

rest out of bounds was irrelevant and the stroke itself did not count.

答：球员 A只需按照违反规则 11-4b，罚两杆即可。在发球区外击打

之球不是使用中球，因此，球被击出界外并不计入其该洞成绩。

Laser range finders are fairly common

now in the world of golf and they are

very useful tools to give accurate

yardages around the golf course. They

can, however, be a challenge to use

when trying to locate distance to the

flagstick as it is a very thin target.

To help that process, we have

installed Smart Reflectors on the top

of the flagsticks. These are mirrored

devices that help reflect the laser back

to the range finder quickly and

accurately. Next time you are on the

course, aim your range finder at the

top of the flagstick and you should be

able to get your yardage much easier

than in the past.


2014 WGC-HSBC Champions Review

2014 世锦赛-汇丰冠军赛回顾

2014世锦赛-汇丰冠军赛 11 月 5日至 9 日在佘山高尔夫上演，如织的人潮见证了汇丰

冠军赛的完美与辉煌。创办于 2005 年的汇丰冠军赛，如今已经成为亚洲级别最高的

高尔夫赛事，是 4场高尔夫世界锦标赛中唯一一场在美国以外地区举行的比赛，被伍

兹等高球名将昵称为“亚洲明珠”、“亚洲大满贯”。

The 2014 WGC-HSBC Champions, held in Sheshan Golf Club from 5thNov to 9th Nov, witnessed a multitude of enthusiastic spectators over the week. Inaugurated in 2005, the WGC-HSBC Champions has now become the most high-profile golf tournament in Asia, and is the only World Golf Champions tournament that is held on non-American soil.


为了迎接汇丰冠军赛，从去年冬天开始，

俱乐部对球场进行了长达半年的改造。虽

然俱乐部每年都会对球场进行一些细微的

改造，但今年对 6 个球洞进行改造，规模

是空前的。

To prepare for the WGC-HSBC Champions, Sheshan Golf Club underwent a good six months of course renovations.

我们在此次大赛中对球道宽度也进行了

调整，长草区更是将原来的高度提升到

100mm-120mm，这就要求球手们的击球

更加准确。

We made changes to the width of the

fairway and the thickness of the rough was

increased to 100mm-120mm. These were

done to force players to make more

accurate shots.

汇丰冠军赛的顺利运转离不开政府的鼎力支持和佘山上下各部门的通力合作。志愿者是这

其中最为特别又庞大的群体，从维护秩序、后勤保障、物品运输、签到计分、媒体中

心……都会看见他们忙碌的身影。

The success of the WGC-HSBC Champions is also due to the support from the government, as well

as the teamwork displayed by the various departments in Sheshan. Volunteers are one of the most

special group of people; they have to maintain order, keep scores, move things around etc; they are

always busy.


We have a total of 550 volunteers this year, 330 of them comprising of university students, while the rest are made up of our members and the public. There is no one more familiar with Sheshan’s golf course than our very own members. These members willingly volunteered their time and effort for the tournament, and some of them are even repeated volunteers for a good 9 years. This year, we have even seen entire families, along with their little ones, volunteering to be part of the tournament!

今年一共有 550 名赛事志愿者，330 名是来自上海外贸大学的学生，其余的则是由佘山会

员和网上报名的高尔夫爱好者组成。对于赛场，没有比佘山高尔夫俱乐部的会员们更熟悉

的了。他们自愿报名参加志愿者工作，其中不少人都已是连续工作 9年的元老级人物。而

在今年，一个新的现场让我们俱乐部欣喜——不少会员志愿者都全家上阵，带来孩子一

担任志愿者。


每一年佘山都在争取做到最好，正如本届冠军巴巴·沃森在接受采访时评

论“球场在最好的状态”一样，如何保持优势不断向前，这对我们来说一

个挑战，但是我们通过比赛积累了很多经验。

Each year, Sheshan puts in our best to ensure that everything is done to perfection. Just as Bubba Watson commended, “the golf course is in beautiful shape”, showing that our months efforts prior to the tournament have indeed paid off.
