In his Friday Sermon today, Hazoor Anwar (aa) continued to narrate about the Badri

companions of the Holy Prophet (sa). Continuing from previous week, the life of Hazrat Sa’ad

bin Ubadah (ra) was discussed. He was a leader in Medina who accepted Islam at the occasion

of Bait-e-Aqba in the last years of Mecca. He was known for his generosity.

When the Holy Prophet (sa) migrated to Medina, Hazrat Sa’ad used to send him a bowl of meat

every day. Hazoor Anwar (aa) clarified that we also find in history that sometimes there was no

food in the home of the Holy Prophet (sa). Therefore, it is possible that the Holy Prophet (sa)

sometimes used to distribute this meat to poor people or this meat was sent in the early period

of Medina. We also find in history that the Holy Prophet (sa) received this bowl of meat for

seven months while he was staying in the house of Hazrat Abu Ayub (ra) after the migration.

For seven months, before the construction of the mosque and attached chambers, the Holy

Prophet (sa) stayed in the home of Hazrat Abu Ayub (ra) upon his arrival in Medina. Once

Hazrat Abu Ayub was asked that what was the favorite food of the Holy Prophet (sa)? He

replied that we never saw the Holy Prophet (sa) demanding for any specific kind of food or

critiquing any food that was presented to him.

Once the Holy Prophet (sa) went to the house of Hazrat Sa’ad and said Assalamu Alaikum.

Hazrat Sa’ad replied in a low voice which wasn’t heard by the Holy Prophet (sa). The Holy

Prophet (sa) said Salaam three times, but didn’t hear a reply from Hazrat Sa’ad. The Holy

Prophet (sa) turned back. Hazrat Sa’ad quickly said to the Holy Prophet (sa): ‘May my parents

be sacrificed upon you; I replied to you each time, but my voice didn’t reach you. I wished that

you continue to pray for peace and blessings upon us’. Then he presented food to the Holy

Prophet (sa). After eating, the Holy Prophet (sa) prayed for him and his children and said that

may your food be always consumed by the righteous people and may the angels of God

continue to have mercy upon you. It is also recorded that Hazrat Sa’ad used to feed 80

companions of Ahlus Suffa.

Some historians have mentioned that Hazrat Sa’ad did participate in the battle of Badr, while

others have claimed that he wasn’t part of it. One explanation of this that we find is that he was

busy preparing for the war and was also urging others to participate. However, due to being

bitten by a dog, he wasn’t able to participate. However, the Holy Prophet (sa) included him

among those who participated and also granted him a portion from the spoils of war. It’s also

mentioned that before departing for the battle of Badr, he gifted a sword to the Holy Prophet

(sa) which he used in the battle of Badr.

At the time of the battle of Badr, it is mentioned that the Holy Prophet (sa) turned to

companions to seek their counsel. Hazrat Abu Bakr and Hazrat Umar came forward, but the

Holy Prophet (sa) didn’t let them. Hazrat Sa’ad bin Ubadah (ra) said: “O Prophet of Allah, you

want us (people of Medina) to speak. By God, if you ordered us to plunge our horses into

the sea, we would do so.”

Similarly, at the time of the battle of Uhud, it is mentioned that when the Holy Prophet (sa) was

injured and was being attacked from all sides, Hazrat Sa’ad was among those companions

surrounding him to keep him safe. The Holy Prophet (sa) returned to Medina upon his horse.

Due to his injuries, it is mentioned that he leaned upon Hazrat Sa’ad bin Ubadah and Hazrat

Sa’ad bin Muaz to dismount the horse. Hazoor Anwar (aa) mentioned that he will continue to

narrate about him in the next sermon.
