answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard. Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.

The Sydney Harbor Bridge is the world’s largest steel arch bridge with the top of the bridge standing 134 meters above the harbor. It is one of Australia’s most well-known and photographed landmarks. Fondly known by the locals as the “Coat hanger,” the Sydney Harbor Bridge celebrated its 70th birthday in 2002. Its official opening was in March 1932. At that time, the average annual daily traffic was around 11,000 and now it is around 160,000 vehicles per day.

Construction of the Sydney Harbor Bridge started in 1924 and took 1,400 men eight years to build at a cost of 4.2 million. Fifty-three thousand tons of steel were used in its construction. It now carries eight traffic lanes and two rail lines, one in each direction, but at the time of its construction the two eastern lanes were tram tracks. They were converted to road traffic when Sydney closed down its tram system in the 1950s.

Bridge Climb started in 1998 and attracts tourists and locals alike to climb the monument. After climbing through catwalks and up ladders and stairs, the view is absolutely breathtaking. By all reports, Bridge Climb is fantastic and one of the “must dos” while on a trip to Sydney. Royals and celebrities, such as Prince Frederik and Princess Mary of Denmark, and American actor Matt Damon, have done the climb. Questions:1. When did the Sydney Harbor Bridge start its construction?2. Which of the following statements is true?3. What happened to the two eastern lanes in the 1950s?

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage. When an emergency situation occurs, observers are more likely to take action if

there are few or no other witnesses. This phenomenon is referred to as the bystander effect.

The bystander effect is also called the Genovese effect, which is named after Kitty Genovese, a young woman who was cruelly murdered on March 13, 1964. Early in the morning, 28-year-old Genovese was returning home from work. As she approached her apartment entrance, she was attacked and stabbed by a man. Despite Genovese’s repeated cries for help, none of the dozen or so people in the nearby apartment building who heard her cries called police for help. The attack first began at 3:20, but it was not until 3:50 that someone first contacted police. Many of the witnesses reported that they believed they were witnessing a lovers’ quarrel and didn’t realize that the young woman was being murdered.

There are two major factors that contribute to the bystander effect. First, the presence of other people means a division of responsibility. Because there are other observers, individuals do not feel as much pressure to take action, since the responsibility to take action is thought to be shared among all of those present. The second reason is the need to behave in correct and socially acceptable ways. When

other observers fail to react, individuals often take this as a signal that a response is not needed or not appropriate. Questions:1. What did the witnesses think when Genovese cried for help?2. Which of the following statements is true?3. What is the topic of the passage?

Questions 17 through 20 are based on the following longer conversation.M: Frank is going to retire soon. We are planning a farewell party for him. Do you

have any idea?W: I have been working for him as a secretary for only half a year, so I don’t think I

know him a lot. But I feel he is a great fan of Star Wars. He uses the movie poster as a screen saver and I see many Star Wars books on his bookshelf.

M: Good. We can prepare a gift for him in that regard. Do you have any other useful information? Like what food does he prefer? We are thinking about which choice is better, the company’s canteen or a restaurant?

W: He likes Mexican food and he always complains that the food in our canteen lacks strong flavors.

M: Ok, we will try and reserve some seats in a Mexican food restaurant.W: Have you decided the time to throw the party? Shall I tell him in advance or is it a

surprise one?M: We are thinking about giving him a surprise. Maybe you could set up a fake

meeting like a business lunch with a client and we will show up in the restaurant to surprise him.

W: Will our big boss come to the party, too? M: Yes, actually it is his idea. He wants to show his appreciation for Frank. He always

says that Frank is one of the most loyal and efficient staff members in this office. I believe he will say something on behalf of our company.

W: Oh, I can’t wait for that day. It will definitely be a memorable moment in Frank’s career.

Questions:17. What are the two speakers talking about? 18. What present will they probably prepare? 19. Which of the following sentences is true?20. What will the boss do at the party?

Section BDirections: In Section B, you will hear several longer conversation(s) and short passage(s), and you will be asked several questions on each of the conversation(s) and the passage(s). The conversation(s) and the passage(s) will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard. Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.

Air travel is such an everyday experience these days that we are not surprised when we read about a politician having talked with the Japanese Prime Minister one day, having to attend a conference in Australia the following morning and having to be off at midday to sign a trade agreement in Bangkok. Air travel is so quick nowadays that we can leave London after breakfast and be in New York in eight hours. Yet what really disturbs us is that when we arrive it is only lunch time, but we have already had lunch on the plane and are expecting dinner.

Doctors say that since air travelers are in no condition to work after crossing a number of time zones, they should go straight to bed on arrival. By comparison, airline pilots often live by their own watches, ignoring local time, and have breakfast at midnight if necessary. They have far less reason to worry about their health than air travelers because they are used to flying and are physically fit.

For businessmen who go on long-distance flights, they are lucky if the company is enlightened enough to insist on their taking the doctor’s advice and resting for a day before working. Sometimes the managing director is such an energetic character that he expects everyone to be as fit as he is. As he has never felt any ill effects after flying himself, the schedule he lays down is so demanding that the employee is too exhausted to carry it out satisfactorily. He must either go straight to an important meeting as soon as his plane touches down or else return as soon as the meeting is over to report to his boss. Managing directors of this type often do not realize how disastrous this policy may be for the man’s health and the company’s reputation.Questions:11. What will pilots do after long distance flights?12. What should businessmen traveling a long distance do?13. What is the topic of the passage?

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage. As the 1920s progressed, American businesses were thriving and the economy

booming. Many people were investing money in the stock market and buying shares of stock.

Between 1925 and 1929, the value of most stocks more than doubled. Investors who sold their shares when the price increased made a great deal of money. This led many greedy people to borrow money to invest in the stock market. They planned to sell their shares when the stock increased in value. However, this input of money into the market inflated stock prices beyond the worth of the stocks. On October 24, 1929,

the increase in stock prices turned into a plunge. By October 29, stock prices had decreased even further, causing numerous investors to panic and sell their stocks, even though the stocks were worth less than their purchase price.

By the end of the year, investors had lost billions in the stock market crash. Banks and businesses that had lost heavily in the stock market closed. Millions of people lost their savings when the bank failed. As banks and businesses closed, the people they employed lost their jobs. The stock market crash of 1929 contributed to the decline of the American economy and the resulting Great Depression, which would last into the 1940s in the United States.Questions:14. What happened between 1925 and 1929?15. What was the consequence of the closure of banks and businesses?16. What is the main idea of the passage?

Questions 17 through 20 are based on the following longer conversation.M: How is everything going on, Jane? You know, it is the graduation season.W: Not bad. I submitted a job application yesterday and I am waiting for the interview.M: What kind of job are you looking for?W: I finally decided to be a kindergarten teacher because it suits me most, I think.M: I think you are overqualified for the job. You can try working in a high school. You are good at composing music stuff and with your professional knowledge, you can awaken the young people’s interest in classical music. W: I love children and I feel my life fulfilled if I can sing to them and teach them how to dance. M: You know kids are sometimes too tiresome. W: I am fully prepared. I used to take care of children during summer and winter holidays. My ultimate goal is to start my own kindergarten business. M: That makes sense. What do you have in mind about your future kindergarten?W: I want to start with basic life skills in an entertaining and relaxing environment. And I want to cultivate their inquiring mind at a very early age.M: Sounds great. Many kindergartens are too eager to focus on teaching knowledge these days. Good luck with your interview.W: Thanks a lot.

Questions17. What is Jane doing now?18. What does the man think of Jane? 19. What is Jane’s ultimate goal?20. What does the man think of the kindergarten these days?

Good afternoon, and welcome to England. We hope that your visit here will be a pleasant one. Today, I would like to draw your attention to a few of our laws.

The first one is about drinking. Now, you may not buy alcohol in this country if you are under 18 years of age, nor may your friends buy it for you.

Secondly, noise. Enjoy yourselves by all means, but please don’t make unnecessary noise, particularly at night. We ask you to respect other people who may wish to be quiet.

Thirdly, crossing the road. Be careful. The traffic moves on the left side of the road in this country. Use pedestrian crossings and don’t take any chances when crossing the road.

My next point is about litter. It is an offence to drop litter in the street. When you have something to throw away, please put it in your pocket and take it home, or put it in a litter bin.

Finally, as regards smoking, it is against the law to buy cigarettes or tobacco if you are under 16 years of age.

I’d like to finish by saying that if you require any sort of help or assistance, you should contact your local police station, who will be pleased to help you.Questions:11. What is the fourth law mentioned in the speech?12. Who do you think is most likely to make the speech?13. What is the main purpose of this speech?

both countries are facing the same problems of economic and social pressures and lack of confidence.

Under economic pressure American young people have to work hard and most students have to take part-time work in order to support themselves.

“In these circumstances,” an American expert said, “young people lack confidence, which was not the case in the 1960s when young Americans thought themselves capable of doing anything.”

In spite of the different conditions in China, the Chinese young people are also

sell try to make money on campus. Moreover, college students have begun to doubt whether what they are learning in class will help them find work, as many businesses totally ignore students of pure theory.

Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.

The desire for caffeine is what attracts crowds and makes coffee such a huge business. More than forty years of perseverance makes Starbucks a pretty solid company in the world. Why is Starbucks so successful? Obviously, it’s not because of the price. It’s not the cheapest place to get a cup of coffee, but the environment of Starbucks makes it a top location. Its stores across the world look pretty similar, so you know exactly what to expect when you walk inside a Starbucks. This makes it a familiar place for tourists or people on business trips to get something familiar.

Starbucks opened its first store in Seattle in 1971. It entered the Taiwan market in 1998 and the Chinese mainland in 1999. The beginning was difficult. China has a culture of tea drinking that dates back to 3,000 years ago. With this fact in mind, Starbucks came up with a strategy to conquer the Chinese market.

Here are some key elements of Starbucks’ success in China:The stores are bigger and with more seating space. In China, people don’t just go

to coffee shops to buy a cup of coffee; they prefer to sit back and chat with friends and family. Some Chinese even have business meetings with their clients there. Besides, Starbucks stores in China offer a localized menu, which includes local Chinese teas and treats like mooncakes. Starbucks in China is up to 20% more expensive than other markets. This is to target the upper class of the Chinese population. Furthermore, the food sold at Starbucks is labeled with the country where it was imported from to address Chinese consumers’ concerns about food safety. Questions:11. When did Starbucks enter the Chinese mainland?12. Why is Starbucks successful across the world?13. Which of the following is not part of Starbucks’ strategy in China?

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage. Most people are familiar with the works of William Shakespeare, one of the

greatest English writers of the 16th and 17th centuries. Yet how many know Shakespeare the person, the man behind the works?

After centuries of research, scholars are still trying to discover Shakespeare’s personal history. It is not easily found in his writings. Authors of the time could not protect their works. An acting company, for example, could change a play if they wanted to. Nowadays, writers have copyrights that protect their work.

Many myths arose about Shakespeare. Some said he had no formal education. Others believe that he began his career by tending the horses of wealthy men. All of these myths are interesting, but are they true? Probably not. Shakespeare’s father was

a respected member of the town council. He sent young William to grammar school. Most people at that time did not continue beyond grammar school; so, Shakespeare did have, at least, an average education.

Some parts of Shakespeare’s life will always remain unknown. The Great London Fire of l666 burned many important documents that could have been a source of clues. We will always be left with many questions and few facts.Questions:14. What does the speaker say about William Shakespeare?15. What do we learn about Shakespeare’s father?16. Why does the speaker say parts of Shakespeare’s life will remain a mystery?

Questions 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.W: Professor Lee, why do you think English has become the language of the world?M: Well, for one thing, it’s very commonly used. The only language that is used by more people is Chinese.W: Why is English spoken by so many people?M: It’s spoken in many countries of the world because of the British Empire. And now of course is the influence of America as well. W: Many students find English a difficult language to learn.M: Oh, all languages are difficult to learn. But English does have two greatest advantages.W: What are they?M: Well, first of all, it has a very international vocabulary. It has many German, Dutch, French, Spanish and Italian words in it. So speakers of those languages will find many familiar words in English. In fact, English has words from many other languages as well. W: Why is that?M: Well, that’s partly because English speakers have travelled a lot, they bring back words with them. So English really does have an international vocabulary. W: And what is the other advantage of English?M: It’s that English grammar is really quite easy. For example, it doesn’t have dozens of different endings for its nouns, adjectives and verbs, not like Latin, Russian and German for example.W: Why is that?M: Well, the reason is quite interesting actually. It’s because of the French. When the French ruled England, French was the official language, and only the common people spoke English. They tried to make their language as simple as possible. So they made the grammar easier.
