General guides for bilingual classes

1. Bilingual Pre-Kindergarten 1 (BPK1): Ages 3-4. No required Chinese background.

Description: Learn Chinese through playing and singing Textbook: selected from LCS BPK textbook by Anne Ju (2008; see information for BPK2). *: This is a new class if we have ≥ 8 students.

2. Bilingual Pre-Kindergarten 2 (BPK2): Ages 4-5. No required Chinese background.

Description: focus on listening and speaking; also recognize basic Chinese words and simple sentences through pictures; and write very simple Chinese characters. Students will learn vocabulary though pictures, listening and repeating. The vocabulary includes colors, fruits, family members, animals, body parts, common objects, numbers, simple adjectives, and common verbs. They will also learn greetings in class and other simple sentences through pictures, action or games.

Textbook: LCS BPK textbook by Anne Ju (2008), including textbook with pictures and sound files (works on PC, but not Mac), homework and voice recording files.

3. Bilingual Kindergarten 1 (BK1): Ages 5-6. Finished BPK or no required Chinese background if ≥

6 year old. Description: 1. Listening comprehension: start to learn simple sentences based on vocabulary

learned in BPK and more; 2. Speaking: short sentences; 3. Writing: write Chinese characters with a principle analyzation to build a sense to write Chinese characters correctly; 4. Reading: 50 words in sentences. 5.

Pronunciation: learn four tones, and also get to know Chinese phonics (pronunciation) by listening Zhuyin song.

Textbook: prepared by Sandra Lee; besides vocabulary in various subjects and sentences, also including three lessons and a voice record.

4. Bilingual Kindergarten 2 (BK2): Ages 6-7. Finished BK1 or a similar level.

Description: Focus on Chinese phonics (pronunciation: 37 Zhuyin); and learn Chinese characters with Zhuyin. Most of the characters are from BPK and BK1, such as the words related to family members, greetings, simple adjectives, clothes, common objects, body parts, and colors. Besides Zhuyin with characters, students will also learn simple conversations.

5. Bilingual Kindergarten 3 (BK3): Ages 7-8. Finished BK2 or a similar level.

Description: Review Chinese phonics (pronunciation and writing) with some vocabulary learned in BK2. Continue with the rest of the phonics (Zhuyin) with more vocabulary and simple conversations. The picture pages in a textbook, Xin bian hua yu zhu yin fu hao (新編華語注音符號), will be used to create simple conversations. The students will graduate from our kindergarten.

Textbook: prepared by Yuming E Chao; besides Zhuyin, also including word cards and Xin bian hua yu zhu yin fu hao (新編華語注音符號).

6. Bilingual Transition 1 (B1T): Ages 8 & up. No required Chinese background.

Description: Cover most things taught in Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten. Textbook: LCS BPK textbook by Anne Ju (2008) and teaching materials by Sandra Lee, Michell

Chiu and Yuming E Chao; and pronunciation (Zhuyin or Pinyin).

7. Bilingual first grade (B1): Ages 9 & up. Finished BK3 or BT1 or a similar level. Description: select several or all lessons from Shen ghuo hua yu Book 1; focus on materials relating

to daily life; emphasize listening, speaking; and also include reading and writing. Textbook: Shen ghuo hua yu Book 1 (生活華語), including textbook and CD.

8. Bilingual second grade (B2): Ages 10 & up. Finished B1 or a similar level.

Description: select several or all lessons from Mei zhou hua yu Book 1; focus on materials relating to daily life; emphasize listening, speaking; and also include reading and writing.

Textbook: Mei zhou hua yu Book 1 (美洲華語), including textbook, homework, word cards and CD.

9. Bilingual third grade (B3): Ages 11 & up. Finished B2 or a similar level.

Description: select several or all lessons from Mei zhou hua yu Book 2; focus on materials relating to daily life; emphasize listening, speaking; and also include reading and writing.

Textbook: Mei zhou hua yu Book 2 (美洲華語), including textbook, homework, word cards and CD.

10. Bilingual fourth grade (B4): Ages 12 & up. Finished B3 or a similar level.

Description: select several or all lessons from Mei zhou hua yu Book 3; focus on materials relating to daily life; emphasize listening, speaking; also include reading and writing.

Textbook: Mei zhou hua yu Book 3 (美洲華語), including textbook, homework, word cards and CD.

11. Bilingual Adult Class (BA): This beginning class will focus on useful vocabulary such as survival

expressions, classroom conversation, and bargaining skill. Topics include tone marks (pitch of sound), Pinyin (phonetic system), the formation of Chinese characters (simplified and traditional), basic Chinese radicals, stroke order, and dictionary skills. Included will be an introduction to Chinese culture, traditions (superstitions, too) and holidays. Chinese New Year, Lantern festival, dragon boat festival and moon festival will be celebrated during the year. * It is recommended that students bring a recorder to tape oral practice.
