EDITORIAL

Dairy development has been acknowledged as the most successful developmental programmes in India substantiated by the fact that the country has achieved the distinctive position of being the highest milk producer in the world with an estimated milk production of ~177 million tonnes in 2017–18. India proves to be a very good dairy market for the fact that people have a very good understanding of milk and dairy products. Milk is considered as a complete food. In most of the communities milk is essential part of their meal and a large variety of preparations are followed.

But is this growth story going to continue? Yes, the Indian dairy industry is at the tip of another major revolution. The overall dairy market, currently

valued at Rs.5 trillion as per Edelweiss Securities, is pushing to change from just plain liquid milk to a VADP (value added dairy products) market and from unorganised and local to more of a structured and branded market. The major factors that are responsible for this change are urbanization, consumer inclination towards a healthy lifestyle, increasing disposable incomes and large vegetarian population.

The consumers today are far more value-conscious than price sensitive. They value superior taste, the power of real ingredients and a strong health proposition. This has prompted players in dairy foods market to innovate more in terms of Value Added products. It’s not only innovation but making them available at channels such as organised retail is helping the industry to grow and reach out to the new age populace.

Some other trends in the dairy foods market that will make it big this year:

• Since sugar is a big no-no to the health-conscious consumers, companies are bringing products that contain no or very less added sugar content. They are also looking at alternatives that can be used instead of sugar, without hampering the product quality or the taste of the dairy products.

• The consumers, who are willing to experiment, are on the rise. Offering a different sensory experience is a way for enticing customers who are on the lookout for something new and innovative. Flavored dairy products are an exciting option for these consumers.

• Customers are looking for clean label products that do not contain any additives, artificial preservatives or chemicals. Clean labels are one of the most prominent dairy food trends that are expected to increase consumer trust and mitigate brand risk.

Maharashtra Government has taken a historical decision regarding increase in cow milk prices. This decision has been taken in consideration of farmer strike in Maharashtra State. Earlier the milk price in the State was lower as compared to neighboring states. Government of Maharashtra announced cow milk price subsidy of Rs.5/litre. Government has agreed to pay a subsidy of Rs. 5 per litre which means that dairies have to pay Rs. 20 per litre for 3.5% Fat and 8.5% SNF.

Based on the current feeding & management practices adopted by farmers milk quality is not at par & all the farmers may not be eligible for the Subsidy announced by Government of Maharashtra. As the subsidy is applicable only for milk above quality of 3.2% Fat & 8.3% SNF.

Prabhat Dairy has proactively taken a step forward for improving the milk quality of cattle, which will directly help milk producers to improve their milk quality & get benefites from the subsidy scheme. For this Prabhat has launched a program called “Prabhat Quality Mission 8.5”.

Prabhat Quality Mission 8.5 includes following activities:

1) “Prabhat DudhDhara” radio program:Prabhat has started radio programs in Ahmednagar&Solapur District “Prabhat DudhDhara”. This program focuses on the milk quality improvement methods, question answer sessions, success stories. This program will be aired weekly on local Radio (Akashwani) Stations

2) Distribution of Pamphlets:We created pamphlet on various topics focusing on the milk quality improvement, which will be shared & distributed with farmers

3) Helpline for Farmers:Prabhat has started a helpline for farmers (1800 2121 7777) on which farmers can call & ask their queries related to dairy business.

4) Newspaper articles:Prabhat has started publishing articles in local newspaper focusing on improvement of milk quality & farm management practices.

5) Social Media for propagation of Quality Mission 8.5:Newspaper articles, Audio clips of radio programs, write ups on milk quality improvement, videos, success stories will be shared with farmers using social media like Whatsapp, Facebook, Hike Messenger, etc
