A STAT THAT MATTERS In their fi rst four seasons under head coach Marvin Lewis (2003-06), the Bengals have a 24-3 record when posting a plus-differential in turnovers. That’s an .889 winning percentage. The Bengals are .538 (7-6) under Lewis when the differential has been even, and are .167 (4-20) with a minus. In 2006, the Bengals were 7-2 with a plus, 1-5 with a minus and 0-1 with an even differential. More extensive league-wide numbers also bear out the Bengals’ experience. Since the start of the 2000 season, here are the aggregate records of NFL teams with varying turnover differentials (minus differentials are not included because they are the exact reverse of the plus fi gures for the same numbers):

Cincinnati had shut out Cleveland 30-0 the week before. The Bengals had gone six quarters without allowing a point three times previously, with the most recent instance in 1980. Baltimore averted a shutout in the Nov. 30 game by scoring a touchdown with 1:01 remaining. That ended an opponents’ scoreless streak of 123 minutes and 20 seconds, dating back to the fi nal 4:21 of the Nov. 19 New Orleans game. That broke the previous Cincinnati minutes record of 110:02, set in 1980.

CHAD JOHNSONCHAD JOHNSON

Wide ReceiverWide Receiver 8585Ht: 6-1Wt: 1927th year in NFL

College: Oregon State2006 Games-Starts: 16-16Career Games-Starts: 92-79

Acquired: D2’01 (36th overall)

Born: 1-9-78

Johnson enters seventh Bengals season poised to stamp a claim as the top WR in franchise history … Can attain club’s all-time lead in catches and receiving yards … Last season he became fi rst Bengal to win an NFL receiving yards title, as his 1369 yards edged Indianapolis’ Marvin Harrison (1366) … Won an unprecedented fourth straight AFC receiving yards crown … Named for third straight season to the Associated Press All-Pro team, and also named All-Pro by Pro Football Weekly/Pro Football Writers Association … Earned his fourth straight Pro Bowl selection (all four as a starter) … Started every game for the third straight year and ranked second on team in catches (87), and scored seven TDs … Has played in 87 straight Bengals games … Ranked third on the offense in total snaps in ’06, playing 961 of the 1025 total.

NEVER BEFORE: Johnson completed a singular NFL achievement in ’06 — winning a fourth consecutive conference receiving yards title. Since the establishment of the American and National conferences in 1970, no one else has led a conference four years in a row, and only two other players have won as many as three in a row. Tim Brown of Oakland and Jerry Rice of San Francisco posted three-year streaks, both from ’93-95, Brown in the AFC and Rice in the NFC. Prior to the ’70 realignment, one player won four straight league titles — Hall of Famer Don Hutson of Green Bay won the NFL crown from ’41-44.

BACK-TO-BACK BONANZA: Johnson set a Bengals single-game record for receiving yards (260) on Nov. 12

vs. San Diego, snapping an Eddie Brown mark of 216 that had stood since ’88. And when Johnson added 190 yards the following week at New Orleans, he established an NFL record for receiving yards in two consecutive games (450). He broke the two-game receiving yards mark of 448 set by San Francisco’s John Taylor in ’89.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR? Though teammate Carson Palmer won the Oscar at the Pro Bowl, taking the MVP award, Johnson played a big part in Palmer’s suc-cess, and in the 31-28 AFC win. Johnson’s three catches for 70 yards included a 42-yard TD pass from Palmer, and when Johnson broke open deep late in the fourth quarter, he drew a 39-yard pass interference penalty against the NFC, moving the ball to the NFC two-yard line and setting up the winning FG.

PREPARE THE CROWNS: Johnson is within one-season striking distance of the Bengals’ all-time lead in both receptions and receiving yards. He already ranks second in both categories. The yards title could come early, as his 6925 total has him just 176 yards behind leader Isaac Curtis (7101). In receptions, Johnson has 466 and needs 64 more to tie all-time leader Carl Pickens (530). Johnson ranked fi fth in receptions at the start of the ’06 season, but his 87 catches moved him past Darnay Scott (386), Curtis (416) and Cris Collinsworth (417). Johnson ranked sixth in yards as the ’06 season began, but his NFL-leading 1369 yards moved him past Scott (5975), Eddie Brown (6134), Collinsworth (6698) and Pickens (6887).

VETERANSCATCH OF THE YEAR: Johnson made the most

dramatic catch of the Bengals’ 06 season on Oct. 22 vs. Carolina. He set up the winning TD in the fourth quarter when he made good on a Bengals fourth-and-one gamble, beating tight coverage to catch a 32-yard pass from Carson Palmer at the Panthers’ three-yard line. Johnson led the team with 73 yards for the game (on six catches).

MORE 2006 HIGHLIGHTS: His 1369 receiving yards ranked second in Bengals history, trailing only his own franchise-best total of 1432 in 2005 … Posted four 100-yard receiving games, moving his career total to a Bengals-record 21, one more than Isaac Curtis … His seven TDs tied him with Eddie Brown for third place on Bengals in career TD receptions (41) … With at least one catch in all 16 games, extended his streak in that category to 76 games, second-longest streak in club history (Carl Pickens holds record at 93) … His 74-yard TD on Nov. 12 vs. San Diego was Bengals’ longest scrimmage play of the year, and his 11 catches vs. Chargers equaled his single-game career high … Had six catches for 190 yards and three TDs on Nov. 19 at New Orleans, tying his career high for TDs and tying Bengals game-record for receiving TDs … Had fi ve catches for 101 yards Dec. 10 vs. Oakland, posting his Bengals-record 21st game of 100-plus receiving yards.

DUAL LEADS ARE DAZZLING: In 2005, Johnson led the AFC in both receptions (career-high 97) and receiv-ing yards (career-high 1432). It stands as the only time for a Bengal to lead the conference in both categories, even in different years. Isaac Curtis (1973) and Eddie Brown (‘88) each led the AFC in receiving yards once, but neither won a catches title. Carl Pickens led the conference in receptions in 1995 and ’96, but never led the AFC in yards.

MORE FROM PREVIOUS SEASONS: 2001—

Jets was hailed by QB Carson Palmer as “the best catch I’ve ever seen on a ball I threw in my entire football career” … In Monday night win Oct. 25 vs. Denver, caught seven passes for 149 yards, including a pair of 50-yard gains … On Dec. 5 at Baltimore, made a tough, over-the-head catch for 22 yards to Ravens’ nine-yard line with 30 seconds remaining, setting up Shayne Graham’s game-winning FG … Had two TDs on Dec. 26 vs. N.Y. Giants, including game-winning four-yard grab with 44 seconds remaining. 2005—Posted career highs in receptions (97) and receiving yards (1432), leading AFC in both categories … Had 189 receiving yards in Nov. 20 showcase game vs. Indianapolis … Caught career-high (later matched) 11 passes in division-clinching win Dec. 18 at Detroit … Won AFC receiving yards race by 286 over nearest competitor, Indianapolis’ Marvin Harrison at 1146 … Ranked third in NFL in receiving yards … Caught seven passes for 139 yards in home opener Sept. 18 vs. Minnesota, with a 70-yard TD on game’s second scrim-mage play, opening doors for 37-8 Bengals win … Had only three catches Sept. 25 at Chicago, but two went for TDs, an 18-yarder that put the Bengals up 7-0 in the fi rst quarter, and a 40-yarder that gave Cincinnati a 24-7 lead in the fourth quarter … Caught four passes for 59 yards in Wild Card playoff 1-8-06 vs. Pittsburgh … Had two catches for 15 yards in Pro Bowl on 2-12-06.

COLLEGE: In 2000, his only major college season, averaged 21.8 yards per catch as he helped Oregon State to No. 4 national ranking and Fiesta Bowl win over Notre Dame … Caught TD passes of four and 74 yards in Fiesta Bowl … Set OSU school record with a 97-yard TD reception vs. Stanford … College teammate of WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh, with both players chosen by Cincinnati in 2001 NFL Draft … Johnson played in 1997 and ’99 at Santa Monica (Calif.) College, sitting out ’98 to concen-trate on academics … In 20 games at Santa Monica, he caught 120 passes for 2100 yards and 23 TDs.

VETERANS

Johnson had a third straight outstanding season in ‘06, leading team in rushing yards (1309) and TDs (12, all rushing) … Voted a second alternate on AFC Pro Bowl team … His fi ve 100-yard rushing games tied a Bengals record he already shared … Tied his personal season high in receptions (23) … Owns the top two rushing seasons in Bengals history (1458 yards in ’05 and 1454 in ’04) … Set Bengals single-game record vs. Houston in 2003 with 43 carries, tied through ’06 for NFL’s most carries in a non-overtime game.

2006 PARTICIPATION: Played in every game for the third straight year, with 15 starts … Entered Game 9 vs. San Diego on the second series (coaches’ decision) … Has played in 62 consecutive games (including one postseason game).

THREE STELLAR YEARS: Johnson has posted the most rushing yards (4221) and rushing TDs (36) by any Bengal over a three-year span. He surpassed the three-year rushing yardage mark of 4061 posted by Corey Dillon from 2000-02. Johnson has scored 12 rushing TDs for each of three consecutive seasons, and his total of 36 tops the former three-year mark of 33 set by Pete Johnson from’81-83. Rudi Johnson’s 36 ranks third in total TDs by a Bengal over three years, behind WR Carl Pickens’ 40 (1994-96) and Pete Johnson’s 38 (1979-81). Rudi Johnson now has 45 rushing TDs for career, tied with Corey Dillon for second place all-time behind Pete Johnson (64).

TWO-YEAR PLAN: Johnson now ranks fourth in Bengals all-time rushing yards (5245). With 1203 yards in ’07, he would pass Pete Johnson (5421) and James Brooks (6447) into second place. Johnson has averaged 1407 yards in his three full seasons as a starter. Johnson enters ’07 needing 2817 yards to pass Corey Dillon (8061 yards) into fi rst-place all-time. If Johnson could average 1409 yards the next two seasons — just two more than his pace for the last three years — he would fi nish the 2008 season with 8063 yards, two ahead of Dillon.

17-1 STILL NOT BAD: It couldn’t last forever. On Dec. 24 of last season at Denver, the Bengals lost for the fi rst time in the 18 games which have featured 25 or more carries by Rudi Johnson (30 carries for 129 yards

at Denver). Perhaps not surprisingly, it took a game in which Cincinnati made an unusually large number of mistakes, and the Bengals still lost by only one point, 24-23. Not only were the Bengals unbeaten in Johnson’s fi rst 17 games with 25 or more carries, they won by an average of two touchdowns (13.6 points).

GIVE HIM THE BALL: Johnson’s 341 rushes in ’06 ranked second in Bengals history, behind his own record of 361 in ’04. He passed Harold Green into fourth place all-time in Bengals rushes (1271), and with a healthy ’07 season, he’ll pass James Brooks (1344) and Pete Johnson (1402) into second place all-time. The franchise leader is Corey Dillon at 1865.

MORE 2006 HIGHLIGHTS: For the second straight year, ranked fourth in AFC and seventh in NFL in rushing yards … Tied with HB Kenny Watson for team lead among RBs in receptions (23), gaining 124 yards … His fi ve 100-yard rushing games lifted his career total to 18, second in team history (Corey Dillon, 28) … Rushed 28-for-96 in season opener Sept. 10 at Kansas City, including 22-yard TD run that put Bengals ahead to stay at 10-3 in second quarter … Had season-high 145 rushing yards on Sept. 17 vs. Cleveland, on 26 carries with two TDs … Scored vs. Browns on runs of one and nine yards in fourth quarter, and posted his fourth straight 100-yard game against Cleveland … Rushed for 101 yards on 26 carries Oct. 22 vs. Carolina … Rushed 18-for-78 on Nov. 5 at Baltimore, including a four-yard TD on which he bulled past Ray Lewis at goal line to pull Bengals within six points in fourth quarter … Rushed for 111 yards on 27 carries Nov. 19 at New Orleans … On Nov. 26 at Cleveland, had 25 rushes for 64 yards, including a score on fourth-and-goal play from Browns’ one-yard line that put Bengals ahead 7-0 … Had 30 rushes for 117 yards Dec. 10 vs. Oakland, including TD runs of nine yards in fi rst quarter and six yards in third quarter … On Dec. 24 at Denver, had 30 rushes for 129 yards, including six-yard TD run for 7-0 lead in fi rst quarter.

THE ONE AND ONLY: Johnson is the only Bengal to post three games in a season of 150 or more rushing yards. In 2003, he was 43-for-182 on Nov. 9 vs. Houston; 22-for-165 on Nov. 16 vs. Kansas City; and 21-for-174 on Dec. 14 vs. San Francisco

Veteran TE started every game in ‘06, recording 21 catches for 254 yards and one TD … Topped his previous Bengals high for receiving yards in a season … Had the three longest catches of his Bengals career, a 32-yarder and a pair of 27-yarders … For the third straight season, his blocking helped HB Rudi Johnson top 1300-yard mark in rushing, and Johnson’s 4221 yards over 2004-06 are the most of any Bengals rusher in a three-year span … Earned unrestricted free agency following the ’06 season, but re-signed with Bengals on 3-8-07.

HE’S CARSON’S GUY: Kelly is a next-door neigh-bor of QB Carson Palmer in the Bengals locker room, and Kelly’s combination of rugged play and team leadership has led Palmer to call him “the best teammate I’ve ever had in football.” Kelly said that a phone call from Palmer in early March led him to cease considering signing elsewhere as a free agent. “(Palmer) told me how much he wanted me to come back,” Kelly said. “He told me I was a large ingredient to our success, and that he wanted me back for leadership as well as football.”

TALENT ISN’T EVERYTHING The 1989 Bengals were a talented team, but never could put it all together on a weekly basis. They outscored opponents 404-285, but fi nished only 8-8. Not since the 1950 Philadelphia Eagles had a break-even team outscored its foes by such a large point margin (7.4) per game.
