Admissions Policy for the Graduate School of Economics Based on Osaka Universitys admission policy, the Graduate School of Economics uses a variety of methods to select candidates. We seek talented individuals with the fortitude and logical thought process needed to systematically grasp the most groundbreaking knowledge in fields of economics and business administration. These individuals should be able to put specialized knowledge into practice, possess the intellectual curiosity needed for their education, and innovatively and originally solve problems from start to finish. They should also have the ability to communicate, including in English. The selection process for the masters program includes a written examination that will be used to gauge each candidates knowledge regarding economics and business administration, their analytical ability level in mathematics and statistics, and their proficiency in English. Furthermore, an oral examination based on the candidates research proposal (to be presented along with application form) will be used to determine whether the candidate has the requisite basic abilities needed for the field in which they aspire to work, whether they have the motivation and vision to write their masters thesis, as well as whether they have sufficient logical thinking skills, intellectual curiosity, innovation, and communication abilities. Admissions Policy for the Graduate School of Economics

Based on Osaka University’s admission policy, the Graduate School of Economics uses a variety of

methods to select candidates. We seek talented individuals with the fortitude and logical thought

The Graduate School of Economics consists of two departments; Economics, and Business and Management Studies. Lectures and seminars are conducted by the faculty members from the Graduate School of Economics, the Institute of Social and Economic Research, and the Graduate School of International Public Policy.

The economics and history courses in economics provide an education designed to produce researchers and highly specialized professionals based on the most groundbreaking research in the fields of microeconomics, macroeconomics, history of economics, economic development, economic history, business history, public economics, finance, international economics, labor economics, and econometrics.

The applied economics course in economics offers an education that cultivates students’ abilities to analyze economic systems based on the most groundbreaking research in the fields of public finance, finance, public economics, international economics, labor economics, environmental economics, econometrics, economic history, and business history. The course is primarily aimed at producing talented individuals and highly specialized professionals who will go on to work as economists in policy planning institutions and think tanks.

The business and management department is segregated into a business course, a management of technology (MOT) course, and a global management course. This program offers an education designed to produce not only researchers, but also talented individuals and highly specialized professionals who will go on to work in the planning and research sectors of the business world. The course is based on the most groundbreaking research in the fields of management science, accounting, management theory, management of technology (MOT), and global management. This includes organization management, management strategy, operations research, marketing, business data and statistics, management information systems, finance, financial engineering, financial accounting, managerial accounting, venture project management, and intellectual property management.

2. Application Qualifications

Applicants who meet any of the following criteria are eligible to apply for the Master’s Program:

(1) University graduates or those who expect to graduate by March 31, 2018. (2) Those who have earned or expected to earn (by March 31, 2018) a bachelor’s degree

accredited by the National Institution for Academic Degrees and University Evaluation. (3) Those who have completed or expect to complete (by March 31, 2018) 16 years of formal

education in a foreign country. (4) Those who have completed or expect to complete (by March 31, 2018) 16 years of formal

education by taking correspondence courses in Japan that are administered by a foreign educational institution.

(5) Those who have graduated or expect to graduate by March 31, 2018, from an educational institution in a foreign country (and have completed a total of 16 years of education). The foreign educational institution should be one designated as being equivalent to a foreign university by the Ministry of MEXT (the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Sciences and Technology of the Japanese Government).

(6) Those who have completed an academic program of either a foreign university or a foreign educational institution (limited to which its comprehensive progress of education and research have been evaluated by an external personnel certified by its government or its related agency, or an institution designated as equivalent by the Minister of MEXT) whose term of study is at least 3 years or more (including completion of the said program in our country earning credits from its institution’s correspondence course or from an educational facility established in Japan under the school education system of the said foreign country designated in “Application Qualification No. 5”), and have earned or expect to earn by March 31, 2018, a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent degree.

(7) Those who have completed or expect to complete by March 31, 2018 a specialized curriculum at a special vocational school designated by the Minister of MEXT (the length of the course should exceed more than four years, and the curriculum must meet the criteria set by MEXT).

(8) Those who have been approved by the Minister of MEXT (as described in Ministry of Education Directive, Vol. 5, 1953).

(9) According to Paragraph 2, Article 102 of the School Education Law, those entering a graduate school must possess high academic abilities enough to study at a graduate level.

(10) Those who have been enrolled at a university for more than three years (by March 31, 2018) and recognized as individuals who have obtained the required credits with outstanding academic results.

(11) Those who have completed or expect to complete by March 31, 2018, 15 years of formal study in a foreign country. Those who have completed or are expect to complete by March 31, 2018, correspondence courses in Japan that are administered by a foreign educational institution and have thereby completed 15 years of formal study in a foreign country. Those who have graduated or expect to graduate by March 31, 2018, from an educational institution in a foreign country (and have completed a total of 15 years of education). The foreign educational institution should be one designated as being equivalent to a foreign university by the Ministry of MEXT (the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Sciences and Technology of the Japanese Government). (Graduates from universities in China who have completed only three years of undergraduate study are not qualified to apply).

(12) Those who are at least 22 years of age as of March 31, 2018, and can be recognized by passing the “Preliminary Eligibility Screening” conducted by the Osaka University Graduate School of Economics, as possessing academic abilities equivalent or superior to those of university graduates.

Important Notes: Applicants who have been enrolled at a graduate school or have completed a master’s or doctoral course must confirm the followings;

① Applicants who have graduated from a university in Japan → “Application Qualification No. 1” ② Those who have graduated from an overseas university (and have completed 16

1. Use Japanese or English.

2. As a general rule, use A4-size paper and a word processor to type 30 lines of 40 characters for Japanese (horizontally) and double spacing for English, with a maximum of three pages. Please affix them together with a paper clip—do not staple or glue them.

3. It should be typed, not handwritten. You may also attach academic papers that are related to your research proposal.

5. The contents should be related to the proposed research project to be pursued on admission to our graduate school.

5. Enrollment and Tuition Fees 1) Enrollment fee: 282,000 yen (as of June 2017). 2) Tuition: 267,900 yen, which covers the first semester of the annual fee of 535,800 yen

Policy on Handling Personal Information(1) Names, addresses, and other personal information obtained through the application procedure will be used in the Entrance Examination Process, in the Announcement of the List of Successful Applicants, in the Admission Procedures, and in the distribution of program leaflets. For those admitted into Osaka University, personal information will also be used in academic-related matters (such as health care management, school fee remissions, scholarship applications, career support etc.), and in school fee management. (2) Information obtained through the entrance examination will be used in statistical analysis of examination results, and in research on admission methods. (3) In some cases, external contractors are consigned to conduct portions of the process mentioned above. Original Copy of an Official Score Certificate of Either TOEFL, TOEIC or IELTS should be received by Thursday, July 20, 2017. Applicants who failed to submit the score by the deadline are not entitled to take entrance exams.

Exam Admission Ticket will be sent after Friday, August 4, 2017. If you have not received it, please contact us from Monday, August 7 to Wednesday, August 9, 2017 or from Thursday, August 17 to 4:00 p.m. Friday, August 18, 2017. 2. Selection Process The selection will be made based on a combination of written examinations (subjects you selected from the following list), interview, transcripts, research proposal, and other submitted documents.

Please take the written examination under the field of your first choice. However, since the subjects and the number of subjects in the examination differ according to the field of specialization and course, the designation of your second choice will be limited by your first choice. In other words, for your second choice, you cannot specify a field of specialization or program that has a greater number of subjects in the examination than your first choice. If the numbers of subjects are the same between your first and second choice but you do not choose the subject required for both as your first choice, then your second choice will be invalid.
